Opis:
Successful crop production depends initially on the availability of high-quality seed. Seed viability and vigour of four kenaf varieties during storage were investigated. Seeds of each variety were packed inside thick polythene bags and kept in Seed Stores under ambient conditions in two storage locations (Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) (29.8°C, 59.10 RH%) and Institute of Agricultural Research and Train- ing, Ibadan (27.5°C, 64.68 RH%) for 240 days (8 months).  Seeds were sampled during storage at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 days and tested for seed viability and seedling vigour index. Data collected on seed viability and seedling vigour were analyzed using ANOVA, mean separation using Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% probability level and PROBIT analysis. The results showed differential responses in the two quality traits due to differences in storage location and varieties. Ibadan storage location provided more favourable conditions for higher seed quality compared to Abeokuta location while Ifeken 400 and Tianung had the best storage potential. The study showed that under ambient humid tropical conditions, storage period should not exceed 180 days (6 months) in order to maintain higher physiological quality with little or no cost. The PROBIT result revealed that the highest seed shelf life (longevity) of kenaf seeds of 8 to 9 months was derived for seeds of Ifeken 400 and Tianung stored in Ibadan and Abeokuta. The shortest shelf life of 6 months was esti- mated for Ifeken 100 stored in both locations.

Opis:
Wheat is a leading cereal, playing a crucial role in feeding the hungry world and improving global food security. The present study was undertaken to comparatively analyze the extent of genetic diversity for various quantitative traits among the wheat material exotic to Pakistan, received from CIMMYT (The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center), Mexico. Nineteen advanced lines from the Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial (SAWYT) were studied along with a local cultivar, considered a control (NIA-Amber). Data were recorded on nine important agro-morphic traits. The compared genotypes differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) in the studied traits, where line V6 produced the highest mean grain yield (6,049 kg ha−1) and maximum 1,000-grain weight (45.0 g). Other lines, V19, V17, and V2, also showed superiority in yield (5,723, 5,150, and 5,067 kg ha−1, respectively). Days to heading established a significant positive association with days to maturity (r = 0.7995), plant height (r = 0.3168), spike length (r = 0.2696), and spikelets per spike (r = 0.4391). The important yield associated trait, 1,000-grain weight, had a highly significant positive correlation (r = 0.6833) with grain yield. Cluster analysis for various quantitative traits showed important information about genetic diversity for the studied traits among wheat genotypes. Hence, selection of genotypes for higher grain yield based on these traits could be useful for future breeding.
Pszenica (Triticum aestivumL.) jest jednym z najważniejszych zbóż, odgrywającym kluczową rolę w zaspokajaniu potrzeb żywnościowych ludności i poprawie globalnego bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego. Niniejsze badania podjęto w celu przeprowadzenia analizy porównawczej stopnia różnorodności genetycznej wybranych cech ilościowych u linii pszenicy egzotycznych dla Pakistanu, otrzymanymi z Meksyku (CIMMYT; The International Corn and Wheat Impro- vement Center). Linia V6 dała najwyższy średni plon ziarna (6049 kg ha−1) i największą masę 1000 ziarniaków (45,0 g). Linie V19, V17 i V2 również wykazały wysoki plon (odpowiednio 5723, 5150 i 5067 kg ha−1). Liczba dni do kłoszenia była istotnie dodatnio skorelowana z wysokością roślin (r= 0,7995), dniami do dojrzałości (r= 0,3168), długością kłosa ( r= 2696) i liczbą kłosków w kłosie (r= 0,4391).

Opis:
Notoungulates represent the most taxonomically diverse and temporally and geographically widespread group among South American native ungulates. Here, we analyze anatomical and systematic aspects of proximal tarsal bones recovered from the Lower and Upper Lumbrera formations (middle and late middle Eocene) in northwestern Argentina. We provide detailed descriptions, comparisons, and infer foot stances and range of movements for the taxa implicated. Material studied includes astragali belonging to the oldfieldthomasiid Colbertia lumbrerense (Lower Lumbrera Formation), a set of proximal tarsals referred as Typotheria indet. (Lower Lumbrera Formation), and tarsals (also including navicular and cuboid) of the informal taxon “Campanorco inauguralis” (Upper Lumbrera Formation). The comparison of the tarsals of Colbertia lumbrerense (middle Eocene of Argentina) with Colbertia magellanica (early Eocene of Brazil) reveals several differences including variations on the development and arrangement of articular facets, and the size of the dorsal astragalar foramen in the Argentinean species. The specimen of Typotheria indet. shows morphological affinities with basal interatheriid taxa. However, its larger size contrasting with the overall small body sizes of Eocene interatheriids precludes an indisputable taxonomic assignment. Concerning “Campanorco inauguralis”, our observations indicate that there is no morphological evidence for a close phylogenetic relationship with Mesotheriidae. It presents a “reversed alternating tarsus” condition, which is also observed in Leontiniidae, “Notohippidae”, Toxodontidae, and some typotherians. However, the spectrum of singularities exhibited by this form precludes the assessment of its relationships in the context of the Paleogene radiation of Typotheria and it is necessary to extend the comparison to Eocene notoungulates. Finally, in a morphofunctional context a plantigrade foot posture is inferred for the specimens here reported. These observations have the potential to provide functional proxies for paleoecological reconstructions to be applied to the study of the early radiation of these notoungulate faunas.

The production processes included catalytic dehydration of methanol in an adiabatic fixed-bed reactor and two columns product separations. In this study, the technological process for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis is built on PRO/II platform based on the combined parameters of the reaction dynamic model for methanol dehydration reaction, the improved NRTL model of the liquid phase, the PR model of vapor phase. In order to validate the proposed model, the simulation results have been compared with the available data from a set of industrial production equipment with a production capacity of 200 000 tonnes per annum. A comparison between the calculated and measured results has proved that these results are satisfactory. The bed height and the volume of the catalytic bed are calculated aim at one million t/a DME yields and while taking account of high-purity DME production. After discussing the influence of feed stage location and reflux ratio for DME product purity, the suitable unit operation conditions are chosen. Accordingly, accurate process simulation results provide the basis and guidance for an improvement and development of the similar industrial device.

Opis:
A greenhouse assay was carried out to evaluate the effect of winter cover crop residues on spontaneous plants that commonly occur on summer annual fields in Southern Brazil. Dry shoot residues of rye (Secale cereale), vetch (Vicia villosa), fodder radish (Raphanus sativus), and a mix of the three species, were applied over pots that had been seeded with alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea), hairy beggarticks (Bidens pilosa), wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), and morning glory (Ipomoea grandifolia) at four different depths (0, 1, 2, or 4 cm). Plant emergence and biomass production were measured. Residues of rye reduced the emergence of B. plantaginea, while vetch diminished I. grandifolia and B. plantaginea emergence. Fodder radish reduced emergence of I. grandifolia. The mix of cover crops reduced emergence of I. grandifolia, B. plantaginea, and B. pilosa. None of the cover crops differed from the control on E. heterophylla emergence. The lowest yields in spontaneous plant shoot biomass were obtained from the cover with rye + vetch + fodder radish. The lowest values of root biomass occurred under cover with rye, fodder radish or the mix. Use of vetch residues decreased emergence of B. plantaginea and I. grandifolia, but enhanced biomass accumulation by the latter.

New theoretical and traditional quantitative solutions involving a pervasive unit quantum of ~10-20 J within biological and large-scale physical systems predicted that the mass of the human subject, subtle changes in gravitational phenomena, and the energy available within the cerebral volume should affect proximal random number variations produced by electron tunneling. In a series of experiments application of a specific, physiologically-patterned weak magnetic field over the right temporal lobe significantly enhanced the effects of intention upon deviations from random variations created by electron tunneling devices at a distance of 1 m. These variations were strongly (r ~0.80) correlated with the coupling between the forces from the background free oscillations of the earth and the energy differences across the cell width between lunar perigee and apogee. The results support the approach that complex cognitive processes including “intention” can be described by physicochemical parameters and their magnitude of energies are within the range by which interactions or modulations from subtle gravitational forces applied across the cellular membrane and width might occur.

New specimens, including the first record of lower dental plates, of the extinct myliobatid Myliobatis wurnoensis were recovered from the Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of the Iullemmeden Basin, Mali, and are the oldest record of the taxon. We evaluated the phylogenetic position of this taxon with reference to other myliobatids (extinct and extant) using osteology and dentition. Our results indicate that Myliobatinae and Myliobatis are each paraphyletic, and that Aetobatus and Rhinoptera are monophyletic. We also found that taxa known only from the Cretaceous, Brachyrhizodus and Igdabatis, are highly nested within Myliobatidae. The phylogenetic position of these taxa unambiguously extends the origin of Myliobatidae and most of its representative taxa into the Mesozoic.

In this paper, crushability of foundry sand particles was studied. Three kinds of in-service silica sands in foundry enterprises selected as the study object, and foundry sand particles were subjected to mechanical load and thermal load during service were analyzed. A set of methods for simulating mechanical load and thermal load by milling and thermal-cold cycling were designed and researched, which were used to characterize the crushability for silica sand particles, the microstructure was observed by SEM. According to the user’s experience in actual application, the crushability of Sand C was the best and then Sand B, the last Sand A. The results indicated that mechanical load, thermal load and thermal-mechanical load can all be used to characterize the crushability of foundry sand particles. Microscopic appearances can qualitatively characterize the crushability of foundry sand particles to a certain extent, combining with the additions and cracks which are observed on the surface.

This paper describes a petrified trunk collected from a conglomerate bed of the Springhill Formation (Berriasian– Valanginian) in the Estancia El Álamo locality, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The fossil trunk is classified within the ubiquitous genus Agathoxylon and the wood anatomy shows a close affinity to that of Araucariaceae. This Patagonian wood has a distinct combination of anatomical characteristics unique among all known species from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Western Gondwana allowing to diagnose a new fossil taxon Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. Sedimentological and megafloristic proxies of the Springhill Formation suggest that Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. grew under a warm and wet climate, which indicates a subtropical to temperate palaeoenvironment. However, the large number of frost rings in the earlywood of this araucarian tree suggests that the palaeoenvironment at Estancia El Álamo was subjected to recurrent disturbances, most likely caused by regional continuous volcanic activity originating from volcanoes located far away to the west. This activity would have produced periodic stratospheric veils that promoted rapid decreases in surface air temperature; the wood response to such stressful conditions would have been the formation of numerous (at least five) frost rings. Although recurrent eruptions in Patagonia during the Early Cretaceous are well recorded, this study is the first to register eruptions recorded in a coniferous wood.

In this paper, a NonStandard Finite Difference (NSFD) scheme is constructed, which can be used to determine numerical solutions for an epidemic model with vaccination. Here the NSFD method is employed to derive a set of difference equations for the epidemic model with vaccination. We show that difference equations have the same dynamics as the original differential system, such as the positivity of the solutions and the stability of the equilibria, without being restricted by the time step. Our proof of global stability utilizes the method of Lyapunov functions. Numerical simulation illustrates the effectiveness of our results.

The behaviors of copper (Cu) precipitation along the radial direction of the 300 mm Czochralski grown silicon wafer have been investigated. It is found that the density of Cu precipitates decreases from the center to edge of the silicon wafer. Moreover, it is revealed that the density of grown-in oxygen precipitates also decreases along the radial direction as mentioned above. Therefore, it is apparent that the Cu precipitate density is positively correlative to the grown-in oxygen precipitate density. This is due to that the grown-in oxygen precipitates can serve as the heterogeneous nucleation centers for Cu precipitation. It is suggested that the Cu decoration in combination with preferential etching can be used to indirectly evaluate the radial distribution of grown-in oxygen precipitates in the silicon wafers.

Opis:
The Shearlet transform has been a burgeoning method applied in the area of image processing recently which, differing from the Wavelet transform, has excellent properties in processing singularities for multidimensional signals. Not only is it similar to the performance of the Curvelet transform, it also overcomes the disadvantage of the Curvelet transform with respect to discretization. In this paper, the Shearlet transform with segmented threshold de-nosing is proposed to segment a warp-knitted fabric defect. Firstly a warp-knitted fabric image of size 512*512 is filtered by the Laplacian Pyramid transform and decomposed into low frequency and high frequency coefficients. Secondly the high frequency coefficients are operated with a pseudo-polar grid and then convoluted by the window function. Thirdly the shearlet coefficients will be obtained through redefining the Cartesian coordinates from the pseudo-polar grid coordinates and de-noised by the segmented threshold method. Then the coefficients which have high energy are selected for reconstruction in an inverse way using the previous steps. Finally the iterative threshold method and object operation based on morphology are applied to segment out the defect profile. The experiment’s result states that the Shearlet transform shows excellent performance in segmenting a common warp-knitted fabric defect, indicating that the segment results can be applied for further defect automatic recognition.
