Fenetyczne zależności między 38 gatunkami wszołów z rodzaju Ricinus występujących na ptakach wróblowatych Nowego Świata analizowano metodami taksonomii numerycznej. 130 cech, podzielonych na zestawy, badano za pomocą analizy skupień oraz analizy czynnikowej (technika Q). Wyniki prezentowane w formie UPGMA fenogramów korelacji i odległości oraz dwuwymiarowych diagramów, w ogólnym zarysie okazały się zgodne z dotychczasowymi poglądami. Klasyfikacje oparte obecnie na różnych kombinacjach cech (morfologiczne z wyłączeniem chetotaksji vs. chetotaksja, cechy głowy vs. cechy reszty ciała) prezentowały wysoce skorelowane wzory podobieństwa i potwierdziły w znacznym stopniu hipotezę „niespecyficzności".

Morphometric variability of G. chrysocephalus was analysed and compared between and within the groups of individuals collected from single pheasant host (idiohostal populations) and from great number of hosts belonging to the same species (synhostal). The congruence of ranges of variation of 4 characters from 3 idio- and 1 synhostal population was examined. The arithmetic means of head width and abdomen as well as total body length of males from 2 idiohostal populations were statistically different from synhostal one. On the other hand, in the females such differences were only in the head width of idiohostal populations.

Opis:
Poultry production proved to be a significant source of bioaerosols. The exposure to high concentration of microorganisms in the air can cause primarily irritations, infections, allergies, and toxic effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the seasonal biodiversity of airborne fungi in the poultry house, in the surrounding area, as well as to estimate health risk. Seasonal investigations were conducted in the spring, summer, autumn and winter 2010 in the poultry house located near Wrocław in Lower Silesia (Poland). The air samples were collected with the use of a Merck MAS-100 onto nutrient Sabouraud agar and were incubated for 5 days at 26°C. Subsequently the colonyforming units (CFU) were determined. The identification of the isolated fungi was made in accordance with the standard procedures. In the summer and autumn when the weather conditions are most friendly for the spread and the development of numerous microorganisms, fungi were more abundant in the surrounding area than in early spring and winter, when both humidity and temperature were lower. The total of 26 species were analysed (10 in the poultry house and 17 in the surrounding areas). Among 12 fungal genera: Aspergillus, Penicilium, Alternaria, Exophiala, Mycelia sterilla, Fusarium, Cladosporium, Scopulariopsis, Chaetomium, Acremonium, Candida and Rhodotorula nearly everything occurred to be the potential respiratory allergens.

Opis:
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) has been developed into many products for the biological control of dipteran larvae, including mosquitoes (Culicidae), black flies (Simuliidae), and midges (Chironomidae) in various parts of the World. Bti appears to pose significantly less of a risk than other chemical pesticides used for mosquito control and eradication programs. Bioproducts based on Bti are highly selective with short environmental persistence, and thus they have very little potential to cause damage to populations of non-target organisms. So far, no example of an unexpected pathogenic organism being developed in the field as well as no examples of resistance to Bti both laboratory and field populations of mosquitoes have been documented. There are some indications that large declines in insect biomass can occur after long-term use of Bti in freshwater wetlands. However, no evidence for permanent damage to ecosystem function has been found. Organisms that utilized insects for food, adapted to the declines and either switched to other food sources or migrate (birds) outside of the treated zones to acquire insects. Even though over 40 tons of Bti have been applied in West Africa alone, no indications of human health or non-target effects have been reported.

Opis:
Within 2001-2003, a total of 4743 ticks of Ixodes ricinus were trapped from the forest area in Masyw Ślęży (Lower Silesia, Poland) near Wrocław. Common distribution of ixodid ticks in all examined habitats, located near touristic routes, are potential loci of Lyme borreliosis in these recreational areas. Out of 1108 tick samples examined by the observation in DFM for the presence of spirochetes, 6.7% were positive. The highest percent of infected ticks (13.1%) was found in 2003.

Opis:
The visualisation of biological data based on the environmental monitoring of the incidence of ticks Ixodes ricinus (the main vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi) and the epidemiological data (based on the surveys of patients with the diagnosed Lyme disease) on digital maps allowed for the identification of areas with the most severe danger of the Lyme disease in Lower Silesia. The increased-risk areas include areas protected by law (Karkonosze National Park, Ślęża Landscape Park, Sowie Mountains Landscape Park), forest areas and city parks (Wrocław).

Opis:
Poultry production proved to be a significant source of bioaerosols. The exposure to high concentration of microorganisms in the air can cause primarily irritations, infections, allergies, and toxic effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the seasonal biodiversity of airborne fungi in the poultry house, in the surrounding area, as well as to estimate health risk. Seasonal investigations were conducted in the spring, summer, autumn and winter 2010 in the poultry house located near Wrocław in Lower Silesia (Poland). The air samples were collected with the use of a Merck MAS-100 onto nutrient Sabouraud agar and were incubated for 5 days at 26°C. Subsequently the colonyforming units (CFU) were determined. The identification of the isolated fungi was made in accordance with the standard procedures. In the summer and autumn when the weather conditions are most friendly for the spread and the development of numerous microorganisms, fungi were more abundant in the surrounding area than in early spring and winter, when both humidity and temperature were lower. The total of 26 species were analysed (10 in the poultry house and 17 in the surrounding areas). Among 12 fungal genera: Aspergillus, Penicilium, Alternaria, Exophiala, Mycelia sterilla, Fusarium, Cladosporium, Scopulariopsis, Chaetomium, Acremonium, Candida and Rhodotorula nearly everything occurred to be the potential respiratory allergens.

Opis:
Paper deals with the results of systematic−ecological investigations of host−parasite relationships in the context of 45 year history of the Parasitological Department at the University of Wrocław. Achievements are concentrated on the presentations of new taxonomic units and rearrangement of classification of parasitic protozoans and tapeworms (J. Janiszewska), nematodes (A. Okulewicz), lice (J. Złotorzycka, E. Lonc, M. Modrzejewska). Faunistic and biometrical data of parasitic commities of fishes, birds and mammals, mainly rodents as well as the vector role of ticks and mosquitoes at Wrocław area are also discussed. Localities of those parasites and their hosts, collected mainly from the Lower Silesia region are rearranged according to new system of physicogeographic differentiation of Poland and its regional position at biogeographical map of world.
