“Portrait of the All-American Girl in Time: The Contradictions Between 1950s Gender Ideology and Style in Seventeen Magazine, by Tadeusz Lewandowski, examines the ideał of adolescent femininity constructed by Seventeen magazine in the decade of the 1950s. Seventeen, First published in 1944, was the first periodical directed at teenage girls during the postwar era, and has until today remained the most popular. From its immediate in- ception during World War II it promoted a vision of the American girl as independent, and spoke out against gender inequality, much in keeping with the war emergency govem- ment propaganda of the time. However, by the 1950s Seventeen had been transformed from an organ that endorsed the emancipation of women from traditional gender roles to one that fully promoted the role of housewife as the single legitimate goal for young women. This was in accordance with the prevailing theories that emerged after the war as to women’s natural inclination to domesticity and motherhood, and the feminine ideał that appeared with it. To this, Seventeen added a consciously constructed ideał of adolescent femininity that its readers were expected to conform to, existing within the confines of a larger gender ideology that placed boys in a dominant position and encouraged physical beautification and allure. This paper explores Seventeen ’s adolescent feminine ideał and its roots, and also examines the contradictions between its emphasis on chastity and inno- cence, and the sexually charged clothing and make up styles that young women were urged to adopt within Seventeen 's pages.

This paper examines linguistic debates surrounding new stylistic conventions in American English, namely the use o f uptalk (speaking statements with a sing note at the end, as in a question), vocal fry (the injection o f creaky, glottal vibrations at the end o f words), and the increasing appearance o f slang in the United States school system. These phenomena are assessed through the prism o f Dwight Macdonald’s essays on English fromthe l°60s, and the “prescriptive” vs. “descriptive” debate on lexicography bom in that ame decade. While this division of perspectives and \alues defines the rift from past models of language and culture, the current prevalence of the descriptiv e school in American academia and its endorsement of uptalk, vocal fry, and slang designate the trajectory of English’s stylistic future.

The American talk show The O ’Reilly Factor premiered in 1996 on media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Channel. Hosted by conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly (1949-), the Factor tackles social and political issues with guests from a variety of fields, and is the highest-rated cable news program in the United States, averaging approximately 3.5 million viewers a night. O’Reilly is the most controversial leader of a new wave of ultra-conservative media pundits that have appeared on Fox News over the last decade, who together have forged a new in-your-face reporting style that has garnered top ratings for the entire network. O’Reilly claims to uphold Fox’s motto of ‘Fair and Balanced’ coverage, and has labeled his own show the ‘no spin zone.’ Here he indulges in over-the-top denunciations of the ‘radical’ liberal establishment, promotes an anti-immigrant, anti-minority, anti-welfare and anti-abortion platform, and casts himself as the disgruntled voice of patriotic working-class Americans. Most distinctive is his interviewing style: in doing battle with liberal opponents he frequently resorts to the bellicose phrase ‘Shut up!’ among other invectives. Though such histrionics have earned him great fame, O’Reilly's reporting has come under considerable scrutiny from media watchdog groups such as Media Matters for America and Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), both of which condemn him for extreme bias and inaccuracy. In addition, a 2007 study of The O 'Reilly Factor by the researchers at the Indiana University School of Journalism has concluded that the program regularly employs propaganda techniques defined by the Institute of Propaganda Analysis in the 1930s. This paper analyzes the provocative stylistic content of The O ’Reilly Factor, and examines the various criticisms the program and its host have so combatively drawn.

This paper offers an analysis of a draft bill on Public Documents together with implementing acts. It focuses, in particular, on the key regulations concerning the list of public documents and their classification, on the process of document specimen design as well as on the exclusivity granted to the producer of blank forms of documents of the first category, examining the impact of the analysed regulations on the system of public document security. The analysis leads to a conclusion that the draft bill has some essential drawbacks which may make the law in question inconsistent with EU law and reduce the level of public document security. These drawbacks have been identified and appropriate corrections have been suggested.

Cel: Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja luk oraz słabych stron w projektowanym systemie bezpieczeństwa dokumentów publicznych oraz sformułowanie propozycji korygujących. Projekt i metody: Badanie oparto na analizie projektu ustawy o dokumentach publicznych wraz z aktami wykonawczymi, przeglądzie literatury przedmiotu oraz na dostępnych w domenie publicznej danych dotyczących bezpieczeństwa dokumentów publicznych. Wyniki: Analiza prowadzi do wniosku, że projekt ustawy obarczony jest szeregiem istotnych słabości, które mogą powodować jego niezgodność z prawem UE oraz obniżać poziom bezpieczeństwa dokumentów publicznych. Słabości te zostały zidentyfikowane i zaproponowano w odniesieniu do nich konkretne korekty. Wnioski: Wprowadzenie analizowanych regulacji prawnych jest konieczne z punktu widzenia bezpieczeństwa państwa, ale wymagają one znaczących korekt. W szczególności należy m.in. ograniczyć katalog dokumentów publicznych pierwszej kategorii, nadać Komisji do spraw dokumentów publicznych uprawnienie w zakresie wprowadzania zmian we wzorach istniejących dokumentów publicznych, uzupełnić luki w zasadach opracowywania wzoru dokumentów publicznych, powiększyć zakres kontrolny państwa nad wyłącznym producentem blankietów dokumentów pierwszej kategorii, zrezygnować z opcji powierzania produkcji blankietów dokumentów pierwszej kategorii podmiotowi innemu aniżeli wyłączny wytwórca tych blankietów.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify gaps and weaknesses in the proposed system of public documents security as well as to formulate corrective actions. Project and methods: The research is based on an analysis of a draft bill on public documents together with implementing acts, the literature review and publicly available data on public documents security. Results: The analysis shows that the draft has some essential weaknesses which may cause its inconsistence with the EU law and reduce the level of public documents security. These weaknesses have been identified and appropriate corrections have been proposed. Conclusions: The implementation of the analyzed legal regulations is necessary as regards public security. However, they need significant corrections. In particular, it is essential to reduce the catalogue of the 1st category of public documents, give authorization for changes in specimens of existing public documents to the Commission on public documents, fill gaps in rules of specimens designing; increase state control over the exclusive producer of blankets of public documents of the 1st category, resign from the option which enables the government to consign manufacturing of blankets of public documents of the 1st category to a producer different that the exclusive.

Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi analizę projektowanej ustawy o dokumentach publicznych wraz z aktami wykonawczymi. W szczególności skupiono się na kluczowych przepisach, dotyczących wykazu dokumentów publicznych i ich klasyfikacji, procesie opracowywania wzoru dokumentu oraz wyłączności udzielonej wytwórcy blankietów dokumentów pierwszej kategorii, badając wpływ analizowanych regulacji na system bezpieczeństwa dokumentów publicznych. Analiza prowadzi do wniosku, że projekt ustawy obarczony jest szeregiem istotnych mankamentów, które mogą powodować jego niezgodność z prawem UE oraz obniżać poziom bezpieczeństwa dokumentów publicznych. Mankamenty te zostały zidentyfikowane i zaproponowano w odniesieniu do nich konkretne korekty.
