    The text is an attempt to use of Richard Borowicz research as inspiration. The aim is to broaden the perspective of research on the problem of social selection in the education system by adding a psychosocial aspect. The article contains a theoretical reference in order to allow for an explanation of the effectiveness of the mechanism of auto-selection and placement of it in the social practices of everyday life. Interactional perspective makes the problem of social inequalities present in the experience and consciousness of man. On the other hand individualistic tendencies in society are the conditions under which self-selection mechanism can both be forced out from public awareness, as well as subject to deregulation. The latter phenomenon may lead to equal opportunities.

    This text is an attempt to reconstruct how emigrants from Poland adapted to the living conditions in Scottish society after Poland acceded to the European Union. Using the functional perspective, four potential forms of migrant adaptation were defined according to their relations with the social system of the host country. Assimilation, integration, marginalisation, and isolation were distinguished as four essential types occurring with different intensities and frequencies. The adaptation of migrants to new living conditions was analysed using these forms concerning the following three critical dimensions of human existence: the material, the cultural, and the social. It makes it possible to show the diversity of the adaptation strategies according to gender and the problem of working in jobs below one’s skill level. On the other hand, the analysis of the cultural and social dimensions made it possible to identify issues related to the accumulation of family social capital and difficulties in transferring cultural capital between the two countries. The survey also showed that Polish migrants have a high integration potential. However, situations where unfavourable or negative experiences of migrants intensify, may constitute a fundamental basis for developing an adaptation strategy that will result in the marginalisation of this group.

    The article is an attempt at a reconstruction of master-student relationships which are constructed in the area of science. That analysis is based on the conceptions of Richard Sennett (craftsman and master) and Mary Douglas (grid and group). It presents a characterization of four different types of relationships that was created in the presence or absence of common paradigmatic foundations (coherent tools of categorizing the examined reality) and structural dependencies (regarding material resources, laboratory equipment, etc.) which can be referred to specific areas of knowledge. The paper also draws attention to the diverse needs of the masterstudent relationship in the natural sciences and also social sciences and humanities, as well as underlining possible consequences in this dimension caused by the principles of parameterization of scientific activity.  
    Tekst jest próbą rekonstrukcji relacji mistrz – uczeń kształtujących się w polu naukowym z wykorzystaniem koncepcji Richarda Sennetta (wzory fachowca i mistrza) i Mary Douglas (grid and group). Zawiera charakterystykę czterech zróżnicowanych typów relacji wytwarzanych w warunkach występowania bądź braku wspólnych podstaw paradygmatycznych (spójnych narzędzi kategoryzowania badanej rzeczywistości) oraz strukturalnych zależności (dotyczących zasobów materialnych, aparatury laboratoryjnej itp.), które można odnieść do określonych dziedzin wiedzy. Zwraca również uwagę na zróżnicowane potrzeby w zakresie relacji mistrz-uczeń w naukach przyrodniczych oraz społecznych i humanistycznych, a także na możliwe konsekwencje w tym wymiarze powodowane zasadami parametryzacji aktywności naukowej.

    The article presents problem of social difference and the related mechanisms of exclusion. The paper shows the process how the difference needed in the world is born inequality, discrimination, human suffering, often as unwanted and unintended consequences of group processes. The factor differentiating way to experience the social difference and forms of engagement in reality, is the human identity. The text presents the arguments in favor of the thesis that the difference does not necessarily lead to inequality, and a key role in this process is the identity of the man, with his basic need of recognition. Educational activities are considered an important factor in institutional support in this process. Also shows the process of individualization (the problem of individualism) in the social world as an essential factor in the offending unfavorable balance between an inclusion and social exclusion.

    The paper is an attempt to answer the question about relation between education and mobility in condition of changing society. For this purpose was used survey research conducted amid post-accession migrants form Poland actually living in Scotland. The research was conducted in two stages, and participated in this 627 respondents living in varied part of Scotland. The first step was to conduct face-to-face interviews (258 respondents), while in the second stage was used CAWI method (Computer Assisted Web Interviews) (369 respondents). Collected empirical data has permitted to establish relation between degree level of education and migration motive of respondents. We can assume that factor explaining of that relation is cultural capital of man, which is collected during education process, in an institutionalized and embodied form. A ready-to-mobility attitude is a resource transmitted in socialization process. The longer individual attends to institutionalized form of education, the more often they manifested migration motivation focused on post-material values – willingness to meet a new challenge in live or assembling a new live experience connected to personal development.
    Tekst stanowi próbę odpowiedzenia na pytanie o relację między edukacją a mobilnością jednostki w warunkach zmieniającego się społeczeństwa. W tym celu wykorzystano badania sondażowe zrealizowane wśród poakcesyjnych emigrantów z Polski zamieszkujących obecnie Szkocję. Badanie przeprowadzono w dwóch etapach i uczestniczyło w nim 627 respondentów zamieszkujących zróżnicowany obszar Szkocji. Pierwszy etap polegał na wywiadach bezpośrednich (wzięło w nim udział 258 respondentów), a w drugim wykorzystano metodę CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviews) (369 respondentów). Zebrany materiał analizy pozwolił na ustalenie związku między poziomem wykształcenia badanych a motywami emigracyjnego wyjazdu. Za element wyjaśniający ów związek można przyjąć kapitał kulturowy jednostki gromadzony w trakcie procesu edukacji w formie zinstytucjonalizowanej, jak i ucieleśnionej. Gotowość do mobilności stanowi zatem zasób przekazywany w procesie socjalizacji. Im dłużej jednostka poddawana jest zinstytucjonalizowanym formom edukacji, tym częściej przejawia ona motywację migracyjną zorientowaną na wartości niematerialne – chęć sprostania nowemu wyzwaniu życiowemu czy zgromadzenie nowych doświadczeń, związanych z rozwojem osobistym.

    Tekst ma na celu zgłębienie socjologicznego namysłu nad rolą „czynnika indywidualnego” w procesie przemian społecznych. Nawiązując do koncepcji indywidualności Jana Szczepańskiego, ukazuje problem społecznej natury człowieka oraz negatywnych konsekwencji procesów grupowych. Nadzieją na przezwyciężenie tych ostatnich jest powrót jednostki do świata wewnętrznego, którego swoistość pozwala na krytyczny ogląd rzeczywistości społecznej. Artykuł zawiera tezę, że indywidualność człowieka, choć bazuje na potencjalnych atrybutach każdej osoby, stanowi zwieńczenie procesu rozwojowego. Jest fazą, w której jednostka jest w stanie w sposób świadomy nie tylko zmieniać własne życie – tożsamość – ale także reorganizować otaczające je środowisko społeczne. Natomiast w kontekście społeczno-kulturowym można uznać, iż kategoria indywidualności jest próbą przekroczenia obecnego dotychczas napięcia między indywidualizmem a kolektywizmem. Dotyczy bowiem problemu relacji człowieka z Innym (innością), w której potencjał indywidualności mobilizuje emancypacyjne dążności obu uczestników owego spotkania.
    The paper raises the issue of “the individual factor” in the sociological reflection on social reality. Referring to Jan Szczepański's concept of individuality it analyzes the problem of human nature and the inner world as a source of resistance to the negative consequences of collective mechanisms. The paper presents the thesis that individuality is the culmination of the process of human development. However, in the context of socio-cultural category of individuality, it is an attempt to transcend the current data and the tension between individual- ism and collectivism. Human Individuality is a potential criticism regarding the public order and social change.

    This paper attempts to provide a critical review of individuality theory as proposed by Polish sociologist Jan Szczepanski. It draws attention to the theoretical and methodological assumptions for showing their incompleteness and the need for further additions. A key thread following text are searching for theoretical roots of individuality within the classical and contemporary sociological theory that could fill some of the gaps and give a chance for more thorough understanding of the issues analyzed, which is individuality. The article highlights the importance taken by Szczepanski attempt to go beyond antinomian description of social reality and the distance the relational model, by emphasizing the role of loneliness in a person’s life.

    The present text is an attempt to show the changes taking place in the sub-discipline of sociology of education. The theoretical frame of the discussion includes concepts of Emile Durkheim, Mary Douglas and Stephen Fuchs who emphasize the importance of social conditions for the process of knowledge institutionalization. Analyses carried out in the article aim also at identification of causes of marginalisation of the discussed sub-discipline within sociology as a whole. One of the reasons seems to be identity incohesion resulting from the fact that sociology of education is a shared field of study of both sociology and pedagogy, to mention the two main study contributors.

    The paper attempts to answer the question: how could human individuality be a resource making it possible to cope with the experience of feeling uncertainty and risk? Jan Szczepański’s idea of individuality defines the structure and functions of that dimension of the human condition. It tries to explain the sense of man’s inner world and their reflexivity in struggling with the negative consequences due to the social organisation of collective life. An analytic view of individuality included in this concept allows for revealing the emergency nature of personal identity affected by dialogue between the inner world and the internalised outside world. The discussed concept might increase the attempt to synthesise it with the vision of mindfulness. The effect of it is a unique underlining role of loneliness in the individual process of human development and captures the moral character of individuality (hipo-egoic phenomena).
    Tekst jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób indywidualność człowieka może stanowić zasób pozwalający na radzenie sobie z doświadczanym poczuciem niepewności i ryzyka w życiu codziennym. Wykorzystana w tym celu została koncepcja indywidualności Jana Szczepańskiego, która definiuje strukturę i funkcje tego wymiaru ludzkiej kondycji osobowej. Stara się wyjaśnić znaczenie świata wewnętrznego człowieka oraz jego refleksyjności w procesie zmagania się jednostki z negatywnymi konsekwencjami organizacji wspólnotowego życia. Analityczny ogląd indywidualności w przywołanej koncepcji pozwala także dostrzec emergentną naturę tożsamości osoby, będącą efektem prowadzonego dialogu między światem wewnętrznym i zinternalizowanym światem zewnętrznym człowieka. Możliwości poznawcze omawianej koncepcji pozwala poszerzyć próba jej syntezy z kategorią uważności, czego efektem jest podkreślenie szczególnej roli samotności w indywidualnym rozwoju człowieka oraz uchwycenie moralnego charakteru indywidualności (hipo-egoic phenomena).

    This paper is a attempt of reflection concerning of appearing human identity problems which take a place in differential and complex society. A special attention was paid nationality identification. Using the concept of G.H. Mead and J. Habermas describe the complex structure of an individual’s identity, presenting various forms of social relationships that connect people with others and try to explain the problem of exclusion and hostility towards others/strange in the perspective of identity. The key issue in this social relationship is the connection the individual and the collective dimension of human identity. The basic hypothesis of the text assumes that the more the community limits the development of a person’s (individual) identity, the more likely he becomes vulnerable to feelings of threat and hostility towards another.

    The text is an attempt to analyze the condition of Polish sociology of education at the turn of the century. It presents changes in the identity of a subdiscipline and their consequences. It also indicates a problem of internal divide within the sociology of education, which is related to the changing set of its key terms,. This shift leads to a differentiation between sociology of education and sociology of schooling in Poland. Causes of this situation may be found in the process of marginalization of this subdiscipline within sociology, which results from its borderland location (between sociology and pedagogy) and also its historical pathways. The article ends with a tentative answer to the question regarding the possibility and direction of further development of this field of knowledge in Polish sociology.

    This article attempts to reflect on three crucial issues concerning migration research. First of all, we seek the answer to the question: what is a specific problem of migration in sociology and in theoretical and methodological approach? For this purpose we reach to the roots of Polish researches of migrants, by Florian Znaniecki and Józef Chałasiński. Secondly, we try to reconstruct the map of current migration problems as is the effect of reviewing the literature of the subject. We pay particular attention to research on migration issues in the UK. Thirdly, we attempt to present our own research approach to Polish emigrants’ problems by using two basical categories: adaptation and integration. The subject of further empirical investigations will be the factors which facilitate or block these processes.
