    Growth regulators, or retardants, play a significant rolein the crop protection system, minimizing the risk of lodging. Thephenomenon of lodging contributes to qualitative losses and deteriorationof grain quality. In this paper, the effect of retardanttype, its rate and date of application, on selected quality featuresof winter wheat grain was evaluated.The study was carried out at the IUNG Experimental Stationin Osiny with winter wheat cultivar 'Roma', grown after rootcrops. The experiment was conducted on the soil of the good ryecomplex. The three-year study was conducted using the methodof randomized split-plot with a control treatment, in four replications.The formulas of retardants (Cycocel 460 SL - chlormequatand Terpal C 460 SL - chlormequat + ethephon), application date(full tillering and first and second node stage) and application rate(maximum and minimum recommended by the Institute of PlantProtection) were the test factors.The reaction of wheat to the examined factors depended onthe type, rate and timing of retardant application. Statisticallysignificant differences in grain glassiness, gluten quality and theactivity of amylolytic enzymes, were found vs. the values of thecontrol sample. The application of retardants had no statisticallysignificant effect on grain bulk density, ash content and total proteinand gluten content.

    W latach 2011–2013 przeprowadzono doświadczenia mikropoletkowe z jęczmieniem jarym na polu doświadczalnym Instytutu Uprawy Nawożenia i Gleboznawstwa – PIB w Puławach, na glebie kompleksu pszennego dobrego. Celem badań było porównanie nowych odmian jęczmienia jarego pod względem ich reakcji na opóźnienie terminu siewu. Porównywano odmiany: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Aliciana, Natasia (seria 2011–2012) i Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (forma nagoziarnista), Kucyk i Raskud (seria 2012–2013). Uwzględniono dwa terminy siewu: 1–5 IV i 10 dni później. Opóźnienie terminu siewu wpłynęło ujemnie na liczbę kłosów na jednostce powierzchni i na plon ziarna wszystkich odmian, dodatnio na zawartość białka w ziarnie, a nie powodowało istotnych zmian liczby ziaren w kłosie i masy 1000 ziaren. Do bardziej tolerancyjnych na opóźnienie terminu siewu (wykazujących najmniejsze zniżki plonu) można zaliczyć odmiany: Goodluck, Natasia, Ella, Gawrosz i Kucyk. Badane odmiany różniły się znacznie liczbą kłosów na jednostce powierzchni oraz plonem ziarna. Mniejsze zróżnicowanie dotyczyło liczby ziaren w kłosie i masy 1000 ziaren. Wysokim plonem ziarna, dzięki większej liczbie kłosów w łanie, charakteryzowały się odmiany: Natasia, Kucyk i Ella. Najwyższą liczbą ziaren w kłosie wyróżniały się odmiany Iron i Raskud. Nagoziarnista odmiana Gawrosz wykazała najniższy plon ziarna, ale najwyższą zawartość białka w ziarnie.
    During the period 2011–2013, microplot experiments on spring barley were carried out in the experimental field of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Pulawy, on a good wheat soil complex. The following cultivars were compared: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Aliciana, Natasia (series 2011–2012) and Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (naked), Kucyk i Raskud (series 2012–2013) in terms of their characters determining grain yield and their response to sowing date: 1–5 April and 10 days later. The delayed sowing date caused decrease of number of ears per unit area and grain yield, and increase of protein content in grain, but did not result in significant changes in the number of grains per ear and in 1000 grain weight. Goodluck i Natasia, Ella, Gawrosz and Kucyk with higher tillering ability, can be considered to be cultivars more tolerant to delayed sowing date. Among the cultivars tested, there were large differences in productive tillering of plants, number of ears per unit area, and grain yield. Smaller differences related to number of grains per ear and 1000 grain weight. Natasia, Kucyk and Ella were characterized by high grain yield thanks to higher number of ears. Iron and Raskud were characterised by the highest number of grains per ear.

    The aim of the study was to determine the response of new cultivars of spring barley in terms of the grain yield, yield components and protein content in grains, to an increase in the sowing rate. Microplot experiments were carried out in the IUNG-PIB experimental plot in Puławy, where the influence of the following sowing densities on the yielding of selected cultivars was studied: 250, 350 and 450 grains m-2. In the years 2011–2012, the following cultivars were investigated: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Olof, Natasia, and in the years 2012–2013 cultivars: Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (hulless variety), Kucyk and Raskud. The experiments were carried out on a soil of a good wheat complex (heavy loamy sand deposited on light loam). An increase in grain yield (averaged across cultivars) was obtained as the sowing density was increased up to 450 grains m-2. At a high sowing rate (450 grains m-2), a significant increase in the grain yield of the following cultivars occurred: Basic, Iron, Despina and Gawrosz, and an increase in the yielding of other cultivars at this sowing rate, compared to the sowing rate of 350 grains m-2, constituted a trend. The largest increases in the yield at a high sowing rate, in comparison to the low rate in the first series of experiments (2011–2012), were demonstrated by the following varieties: Iron (29%), Basic (25%) and Goodluck (21%), and smaller increases were noted for the cultivars: KWS Olof (13%) and Natasia (10%). In the second series (2012–2013), higher yields at a high sowing rate, as opposed to a low sowing rate, were demonstrated by the following cultivars: Gawrosz, Raskud and Despina (31–34%), and lower yields by: Ella, Fariba and Kucyk cultivars (19–21%). The increase in grain yield at a high sowing rate was the result of a bigger number of ears per unit of area in all cultivars (especially in the Basic and Raskud cultivars). The difference in the weight of 1000 grains and the number of grains per ear of the investigated varieties as a consequence of the sowing rate was negligible. In the years 2012–2013, there occurred an increase in the protein content of grains at a high sowing rate. Among all the cultivars (on average considering the sowing rate), the highest grain yields were produced by Iron and Ella, the highest density of the number of ears per unit of area was demonstrated by Natasia, Kucyk and Ella. The cultivars Iron, Gawrosz and Raskud were found to have a significantly higher number of grains per ear than the remaining cultivars.

    Celem pracy było określenie wpływu poziomu nawo-żenia azotem roślin jęczmienia na wyróżniki jakości słodu typu pilzneńskiego i brzeczki kongresowej stosowane w ocenie przy-datności słodowniczej ziarna jęczmienia browarnego. Materiał badawczy pochodził z sezonów wegetacyjnych 2016 i 2017. Sta-nowiło go ziarno z Porejestrowego Doświadczalnictwa Odmiano-wego (odmiany Britney, KWS Dante, RGT Planet; nawożenie 50 i 90 kg N·ha-1) oraz z doświadczeń Instytutu Uprawy Nawożenia i Gleboznawstwa – Państwowego Instytutu Badawczego w Puła-wach (odmiany: Baryłka, Sanette i RGT Planet, nawożenie 100 i 120 kg N·ha-1). Jako odniesienie wykorzystano ziarno jęczmie-nia odmiany Quench nawożonego azotem w dawce 40 kg·ha-1. Ocenę przydatności słodowniczej badanych odmian jęczmienia browarnego przeprowadzono metodami zalecanymi przez EBC (European Brewery Convention). Stwierdzono, że nawożenia roślin jęczmienia azotem w dawce 50, 90, 100 i 120 kg N·ha-1powoduje nadmierną akumulację białka, co znacząco pogarsza ekstraktywność słodu oraz parametry technologiczne brzeczek kongresowych, szczególnie objętość brzeczki, zawartość białka rozpuszczalnego, stopień ostatecznego odfermentowania oraz uproszczoną wydajność warzelni. Ziarno o ponadnormatywnej zawartości białka może być jednak surowcem do wytwarzania słodów specjalnych do produkcji brzeczek piwnych z udziałem surowców niesłodowych.
    he aim of the study was to determine the effect of nitro-gen fertilization level of barley plants on the qualitative features of pilsner malt and congress wort, both used in the estimation of malting usefulness of barley grain. The research material ori-ginated from 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. The first group were the grains of three barley cultivars (Britney, KWS Dante, RGT Planet), originating from Post-registration Varietal Experi-mentation (PVE), fertilized with rates of nitrogen 50 kg ha-1 and 90 kg ha-1). The second group were the grains of three cultivars: Baryłka, Sanette and RGT Planet, originating from the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation- State Research Institute in Puławy. Integrated tillage consisted of inter alia plant fertilization with nitrogen at the dose of 100 kg ha-1 while intensive tillage involved nitrogen fertilization of 120 kg ha-1. The control gro-up was the Quench cultivar fertilized with N at 40 kg ha-1 level. The evaluation of malting usefulness of the grain was conducted according to the European Brewery Convention (EBC). It was stated that the effects of over-fertilization of barley plants with nitrogen occur at the rates exceeding 50 kgha-1 causing decre-ased extractivity of malts, lowered wort volume, too high solu-ble nitrogen content in wort, decreased final attenuation limit, and lowered mashhouse efficiency. The deteriorated wort featu-res occurred especially in treatments with fertilizer dose at 90–120 kg Nha-1.

    Celem przeprowadzonych badań z jęczmieniem ozi- mym było określenie reakcji odmian jęczmienia ozimego (wy- rażonej plonem ziarna) na warunki glebowe (kompleks glebo- wo-rolniczy, klasa bonitacyjna gleby, pH gleby). W literaturze brakuje informacji o reakcji odmian jęczmienia ozimego na pogarszającą się jakość gleby. Bazę wynikową stanowiła seria doświadczeń odmianowych Porejestrowego Doświadczalnictwa Odmianowego COBORU, we wszystkich rejonach Polski, w latach 2005–2012. Badano 10 odmian jęczmienia ozimego: Amarena, Epoque, Fridericus, Karakan, Lomerit, Maybrit, Mer- lot, Nickela, Rosita i Scarpia. Doświadczenia były prowadzone na trzech kompleksach glebowo-rolniczych: pszennym dobrym, żytnim bardzo dobrym i żytnim dobrym; na klasach bonitacyj- nych gleby: II, IIIa, IIIb i IVa; w warunkach pH gleby od 5,0 do 6,7. Największy plon ziarna jęczmienia ozimego (średnio dla odmian) uzyskano na glebach kompleksu pszennego dobrego. mniejszy o 9,2% na glebach kompleksu żytniego bardzo dobre- go, a mniejszy o 16,8% na glebach kompleksu żytniego dobre- go. Zniżki plonu na stopniowo gorszych kompleksach glebowo- -rolniczych były podobne jak na kolejno słabszych klasach gleb. Uwzględnione w badaniach odmiany wykazywały niejednakowe zniżki plonu ziarna przy ich uprawie w gorszych warunkach glebowych. Największy spadek plonu na glebach kompleksów żytnich w relacji do kompleksu pszennego dobrego wystąpił u odmian: Maybrit, Nickela i Fridericus. najmniejsze zniżki plo- nu ziarna przy uprawie na glebach kompleksów żytnich stwierdzono u odmian: Epoque, Amarena i Scarpia. Spośród badanych odmian najbardziej tolerancyjne na uprawę w warunkach niższe- go pH gleby (5,0–5,5) były: Amarena, Epoque, Scarpia i Rosita.

    Statins are inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR), the key enzyme of the sterol biosynthesis pathway. Statin therapy is commonly regarded as well tolerated. However, serious adverse effects have also been reported, especially during high-dose statin therapy. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of statins on gene expression profiles in human hepatoma HepG2 cells using Affymetrix Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 arrays. Expression of 102, 857 and 1091 genes was changed substantially in HepG2 cells treated with simvastatin, fluvastatin and atorvastatin, respectively. Pathway and gene ontology analysis showed that many of the genes with changed expression levels were involved in a broad range of metabolic processes. The presented data clearly indicate substantial differences between the tested statins.
