Background: The available data on the incidence of lactose malabsorption are contradictory. Potential bias in random selection is a major drawback of studies performed to-date. Moreover, molecular analysis of polymorphism -13910 C>T upstream of the lactase (LCT) gene (NM_005915.4:c.1917+326C>T; rs4988235) has not been reported in those studies. Therefore, in this study we aimed to assess genetic predisposition and clinical manifestation of adult-type hypolactasia (ATH). Patients and methods: In two-hundred randomly chosen healthy subjects (HS) aged from 18 to 20 years, the presence of -13910 C>T polymorphic variants upstream of the LCT gene was assessed. In a subgroup of subjects with genotype predisposing to ATH, hydrogen-methane breath test (BT) with lactose loading was conducted to determine the current state of lactase activity. In addition, clinical symptoms typical for lactose malabsorption were assessed using the questionnaire method. Results: Sixty-three out of 200 (31.5 %) HS had -13910 C/C genotype. Thus, genetically determined lactase persistence is expected in the remaining 137 (68.5 %) subjects. Thirteen out of 53 (24.5 %) HS having -13910 C/C genotype were proved to be lactose intolerant. Recalculating the data for the entire studied population it implies the incidence of lactose malabsorption in 7.7 % of subjects. Only three out of 13 (23.1 %) subjects with abnormal BT results, reported clinical symptoms related to lactose consumption. Conclusions: Significantly lower than previously reported incidence of clinically detectable lactose malabsorption in young healthy adults in Poland has been documented. The -13910 C/C genotype upstream of the LCT gene indicates a predisposition to ATH, but definitely does not define the current ability to tolerate lactose.

Opis:
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder, which occurs not only in children’s population but also among adults. Its frequency permanently rise. The reason of celiac disease in an autoimmune process, which is began by contact of gluten from diet with mucous membrane in bowel. Clinical feature of celiac disease is very different, therefore it should interest physicians of various speciality. Often the symptoms are not from alimentary canal, which suggest to make the screening test on a larger scale. In diagnostics the genetic test HLA-DQ2/-DQ8 are more popular. The new guidelines made in 2012 suggest to begin the diagnostics with the genetic test in some cases. The main treatment of celiac disease is a gluten-free diet, which is based on elimination wheat, rye, barley and oat. The occurrence of gluten in great number of groceries, makes the diet extremely challenge for parents and patients. Only diet respected for whole life makes the chance of good function and grow. The paper presents the case report of 11-month-old girl at the time of diagnosis of celiac disease, with serious diarrhoea, peripheral oedema, dehydration, and severe electrolytes disturbances, which is a rare clinical manifestation nowadays. Such situation was common in the years seventies XX century, because gluten introduction into diet of the newborn was too early.
Celiakia jest chorobą autoimmunologiczną, spotykaną nie tylko w populacji dziecięcej, lecz także wśród osób dorosłych. Częstość jej występowania wykazuje stale trend wzrostowy. U podłoża celiakii leżą procesy autoimmunologiczne, zapoczątkowane przez kontakt glutenu zawartego w diecie z błoną śluzową jelit. Obraz kliniczny tej choroby cechuje ogromne zróżnicowanie, dlatego też powinna pozostawać w kręgu zainteresowań lekarzy różnych specjalności. Niejednokrotnie jej objawy dotyczą różnych układów poza przewodem pokarmowym, co powinno skłaniać do wykonywania badań przesiewowych w kierunku celiakii u coraz szerszej grupy pacjentów. Wśród badań diagnostycznych coraz większą popularnością cieszą się badania genetyczne w kierunku HLA-DQ2/-DQ8. Najnowsze kryteria diagnostyczne opracowane w 2012 roku w niektórych okolicznościach zalecają wręcz rozpoczęcie procesu diagnostycznego od wykonania badań genetycznych. Podstawą leczenia choroby trzewnej jest dieta bezglutenowa, która opiera się na eliminacji pokarmów z udziałem pszenicy, żyta, jęczmienia i owsa. Obecność glutenu w licznych produktach spożywczych jest ogromnym wyzwaniem dla rodziców i pacjentów. Tylko dieta stosowana przez całe życie umożliwia chorym dobre funkcjonowanie i rozwój. W niniejszej pracy omówiono przypadek 11-miesięcznej dziewczynki ze świeżo rozpoznaną chorobą trzewną, przebiegającą z ciężką biegunką, obrzękami obwodowymi, odwodnieniem i poważnymi zaburzeniami elektrolitowymi, stanowiący rzadką w dzisiejszych czasach manifestację kliniczną celiakii. Taki przebieg choroby stosunkowo często spotykano w latach 70. XX wieku, co było związane ze zbyt wczesnym wprowadzeniem glutenu do diety niemowląt.

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to present the possibilities of using the competence matrix in the prioritizing of manufacturing activities. Design/methodology/approach: The article discusses one of the enterprise’s human resource management instruments, which are competence matrices. Competence development model of enterprise was presented and model of using technological competences was discussed. Findings: The way of using competence matrices, as a tool to support task scheduling that is carried out by direct production employees in the area of discrete processes, was presented. The author showed, that competence matrices can enable the identification of competence gaps and thus be a tool for planning the training needs of employees, recruitment and selection of employees, making decisions about transfers and building a remuneration system. Research limitations/implications: An important condition for the successful implementation of solutions based on competence matrices is the correct determination of the level of required and expected technological competence and prior declaration of the list of technological operations. Practical implications: The solution described above, consisting in the use of technological competence matrices in the area of production planning, has been used in the calculation algorithms of the IPOsystem™ application. It is a product of the Polish company UiBS Teamwork Sp. z o.o. Originality/value: The use of competence matrices in prioritizing production tasks is undoubtedly a new issue. It is an indicator of the level of organization’s maturity, which results from the need to adapt production enterprises to changing environmental conditions.

Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Organization and Management, Institute of Economics and Informatics, Zabrze; Anna.Gembalska-Kwiecien@polsl.pl, ORCID: 0000-0001-9275-0447 Purpose: This paper attempts to present the essence of the problem of conflicts in the work environment, as well as their most important causes and methods of solving them. Attention was also drawn to the possibility of creative resolution of the disputed issues. The essence of conflict is problematic, due to various definitions and concepts assigned to the term. In the presented paper, conflict will be defined in a way that enables consideration of its constructive, as well as functional aspects. Design/methodology/approach: Empirical research was conducted in the form of a questionnaire addressed to employees. Literature research of the subject was carried out. Findings: When several or a dozen or so people are to cooperate, conflicts are inevitable and even useful, they occur in all teams, regardless of their nature. Teams that are aware that constructive conflicts are needed and are prepared to resolve them work effectively, even when difficult or crisis situations arise. Members of such teams are not surprised by them, they know how to act in such situations and what behaviors of other participants of the conflict they can expect. Therefore, constructive conflicts do not deteriorate employees' efficiency, atmosphere or relations in the team. Practical implications: The issues discussed in this paper significantly affect the improvement of methods related to work environment management and the desired shaping of attitudes and behavior of employees regarding a constructive approach to the issue of conflict at work. Originality/value In company management, the greatest attention should be paid to people as the subjects of all activities. Therefore, it is worth considering and asking the question what to do in a conflict situation, what actions to take, so that the conflict is not only a destructive phenomenon, but so that by searching for its multifaceted solutions, it becomes an instrument of organizational innovation and can lead to constructive solutions and creative changes in the company.

Purpose: Identification of corporate governance as a concept combining the ethical and economic dimension of contemporary organizations, taking into account the category of enterprise value. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on critical analysis of the literature, mainly in the field of corporate governance, as well as in the area of corporate value and ethics in management. Findings: The considerations presented in this study show that corporate governance can be approached as a management tool that would enable an enterprise to achieve various goals, both in the area of economic efficiency and business ethics. This means that corporate governance can be perceived as a factor that links the ethical and economic dimensions of contemporary management. Practical implications: Although the presented considerations are theoretical, they can be useful in practice in the work of managers of various enterprises. That is because they show the effects that can be achieved through introducing elements of corporate governance in the company. They show governance as a tool enabling the achievement of various goals. Social implications: Presenting governance in this way may result in greater interest in this concept. Its application in practice may cause multi-faceted beneficial socioeconomic consequences because governance provides such possibilities. Originality/value: This study shows a specific approach to the issues of corporate governance. This is not only a well-perceived code of good practices, but – above all – a tool for achieving various goals that are important for the functioning of modern enterprises.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show that the code of good practice and the recommendations concerning CG - corporate governance in listed companies, through increased transparency, can be a tool supporting management in the period of crisis. Design/methodology/approach: The article is based on a critical analysis of the literature, mainly in the field of corporate governance, current press publications, as well as an analysis of secondary data of listed companies in the period June-September 2021. Findings: The considerations presented in this paper show that CG can be perceived as a tool supporting management, especially in times of crisis which will enable the company to have better transparency. The principles contained in the code of good practice will serve as recommendations for companies in the CG area. Research limitations/implications: The pilot study performed among all listed companies showed high compliance with companies with regard to the completion of the declaration on the use of CG in the light of the amended guidelines in 2021. Practical implications: The presented considerations are partly theoretical but are supplemented with the results of the analysis of the actual activities of entities in the area of governance during the crisis. They can be useful in practice for managers of various enterprises because they present the tools of CG that can be effectively used to improve the functioning of a company in a crisis. Social implications: Presenting governance in this light may raise greater interest in the concept. Its application in practice may have multifaceted beneficial social, economic, and even environmental consequences. Originality/value: The study shows a specific approach to the issues of CG. It is not only a well-perceived code of good practice but above all a tool supporting management and recommending solutions to companies in a specific time of crisis. The paper fills the cognitive gap in the studied area.

Opis:
Numerous adverse effects limit the applicability of mitoxantrone for the treatment of drug-resistant tumors, including carcinosarcoma. Here, we estimated the additive effects of mitoxantrone and curcumin, a plant-derived biomolecule isolated from Curcuma longa, on the neoplastic and invasive potential of carcinosarcoma cells in vitro. Curcumin augmented the cytostatic, cytotoxic and anti-invasive effects of mitoxantrone on the Walker-256 cells. It also strengthened the inhibitory effects of mitoxantrone on the motility of drug-resistant Walker-256 cells that had retained viability after a long-term mitoxantrone/curcumin treatment. Thus, curcumin reduces the effective doses of mitoxantrone and augments its interference with the invasive potential of drug-resistant carcinosarcoma cells.

Purpose: This paper addresses the problem of depression. Depression is one of the most common mental health problems faced by employees, regardless of their position. WHO research indicates that various forms of depression will become, along with cardiovascular diseases, the most frequent health condition of people in developed regions of the world. Treatment in most cases restores health, yet it is highly disturbing that half of the patients do not undergo treatment for various reasons, thus depriving themselves of the chance to return to normal life and work. The purpose of this paper is to highlight this very important problem. Design/methodology/approach: Literature research of the subject was carried out. Findings: The risk of incidence of depression at work can and should be minimized. First of all, overall physical and mental health of employees should be taken care of. Therefore, we should take care of healthy sleep, healthy diet, practice sports and tourism, and find time to develop our passions and interests outside of work. Of course, the key issue here is the work environment. It is important for the employee to follow the basic rules of hygiene at mental or physical work. That is, not to burn the candle at both ends, not to overwork, not to set excessive, and thus often unrealistic goals to achieve, use rational breaks at work and, above all, take care of good relations with our colleagues. Also, report problems with professional work on an ongoing basis. Practical implications: The issues discussed in this paper significantly affect the improvement of methods related to work environment management and the desired shaping of attitudes and behavior of employees regarding the approach to the issue of depression, a problem related to work environment that has been downplayed so far. Originality/value: A holistic approach to depression. Defining it as an interdisciplinary problem. It should be handled by doctors of various specialties, especially psychiatrists, of course, but also general practitioners, neurologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists and many other physicians. It also requires the attention of non-medical specialists.

The article constitutes a legal and economic discussion of the economic factors which may and should be taken into account while calculating the benefits compensating the loss of income of the injured and of their families in case of death. The analyzed benefits are an important element of compensation of economic loss in personal injury cases where the compensation is the duty of the perpetrator (or the entity responsible for him/her) within the system based on tort liability. In light of the ubiquitous nature of TPL insurance, the payer is usually the insurance company liable under the granted guarantee. The scope of such cover results from the contract and/or legal acts. The subject calculation was based on an actuarial annuity which also takes into account the likelihood of the claimant and his/ her relatives living until the subsequent periodical payments. The applied calculation is of an illustrative nature with regard to the considerations of the relevant economic assumptions made at the time of loss calculation. The discussion carried out in the article concerns the size and value of the economic factors that can be used in this model.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono syntetyczne informacje dotyczące postrzegania elastyczności jako cechy współczesnego przedsiębiorstwa, starając się wykazać, iż może ona stanowić determinantę kreowania wartości. Zwrócono w nim uwagę, iż elastyczność oznacza szeroko rozumianą zdolność przystosowania organizacji do zmiennych warunków otoczenia, wyjaśniając, iż popularność tego zagadnienia jest powodowana, obserwowanym od dłuższego czasu, zwiększaniem dynamiki zmian otoczenia, wymuszającym zmiany dostosowawcze w organizacji. To dostosowanie pozwala sprawnie funkcjonować w turbulentnym otoczeniu i stanowi ważny, coraz ważniejszy, komponent budowania konkurencyjności i efektywności przedsiębiorstwa w osiąganiu jego celów. W świetle powyższych informacji celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie elastyczności przedsiębiorstwa jako jednego z tych czynników, który może determinować sukces przedsiębiorstwa oraz wspomagać kreację wartości.
This article presents synthetic information about the perception of flexibility as a characteristic of a modern enterprise, trying to show that it can be a determinant of creating value. It pointed out that flexibility means broadly understood the ability to adapt the organization to changing environmental conditions, explaining that the popularity of this issue is caused by the observed for a long time increasing the dynamics of changes in the environment, forcing adjustment changes in the organization. This adaptation allows you to function efficiently in a turbulent environment and is an increasingly important component of building the competitiveness and effectiveness of an enterprise in achieving its goals. In the light of the above information, the purpose of this article is to present the flexibility of the company as one of those factors that may determine the success of the company and may support the creation of value

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie – co jest głównym celem działalności dla polskich przedsiębiorców i jakie są determinanty ich sukcesu. Aby odpowiedzieć na to pytanie, zaprezentowano wyniki badań własnych przeprowadzonych na grupie 156 polskich przedsiębiorstw.
This article presents synthetic information about perceiving the success category and its determinant. It emphasized that the notion of success is complex and multidimensional. There are also many factors that determine this success. The article attempts to answer the question – what is the main purpose of business for Polish entrepreneurs and what are the determinants of their success. In order to answer this question, the results of own research carried out on a group of 156 Polish companies were presented.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono podstawowe informacje dotyczące sektora kultury w Polsce oraz jego problemów i oczekiwań związanych z działalnością instytucji kultury. Szukając sposobów na poprawę efektywności działania instytucji kultury, wskazano klaster. Celem opracowania jest zaprezentowanie klastra jako przykładu praktycznego rozwiązania, które umożliwia poprawę efektywności działania i osiągnięcie sukcesu dzięki współpracy jednostek kultury z sektorem biznesu. W artykule powołano się na przykład Śląskiego Klastra Kultury, Turystyki i Rekreacji.
This paper presents the basic information about the cultural sector in Poland, its basic problems and expectations related to the activities of cultural institutions. Looking for ways to improve the effectiveness of cultural institutions indicated cluster. The purpose of this paper is to present the cluster as an example of the practical solutions that will improve efficiency and enable success, thanks to the cooperation of the culture of the business sector. The article cited, for example, Silesian Cluster of Culture, Tourism and Recreation.

Purpose: The paper discusses a comprehensive approach to the phenomenon of mobbing within an organization. It shows its characteristics and the causes of this negative phenomenon in an enterprise. It presents the profile of both a mobber and a victim of mobbing. It outlines the course of mobbing, the tactics used in the process and its effects. Design/methodology/approach: Literature research of the subject was carried out. Findings: It also indicates the methods of mobbing prevention, with particular emphasis on the broadly understood prophylaxis, both on the level of organization and the employee. Research limitations/implications: (not applicable) Practical implications: Managerial staff should also develop (or delegate this task to HR or PR department) a program of anti-mobbing activities, taking into account the nature of the organization, improve their qualifications on the management of ethical conflicts, and promote ethical behaviour in the enterprise or institution: promote good practices, appreciate positive behaviour and strongly condemn unethical behaviour. Social implications: Mobbing is a phenomenon that has existed for a long time, but in recent years, in countries where human rights are respected, it was decided to fight this pathology. Originality/value: Mobbing prevention in an enterprise must be a systemic action. First and foremost, it concerns the employer, who should introduce anti-mobbing procedures and immediately react to unacceptable behaviour in the workplace. Employees can also protect themselves from mobbing.

This article addresses the problem of occupational burnout, presenting the characteristics of the phenomenon, its causes, effects and methods of prevention and counteraction. The issue of burnout is widespread, as it is reaching a wider and wider numbers of employees. The severity of this problem may be of concern, as it carries a lot of negative effects, including an impact on health, the safety of others, the development of personality, the functioning of an individual in society and the course of a career. It can lead to large losses incurred by enterprises, employers and employees themselves. In our country, we hear more and more about the need to counter occupational burnout, and various prevention programmes and preventive institutions are being created.
