    The article presents a brief outline of the most popular features of Tadeusz Różewicz's poetics, that question the main structural dominants and institutional indicators of literariness ooted in conventional modes and rules shaping a modern model of literature. It does so, however, only to suggest that Różewicz's critical dependence on modern literary conventions is supplemented with a strong, though utopian, "totalizing intention" aimed at creation of the one, perfect, all encompassing text. Somatic, organic relations between artist and his work, expressed through the impressive metaphors and images of insemination, foetal development, and birth makes the poet's works a symbolic representation of the phantasm of a dismembered body. This fragmented imago should be integrated in the "total form of the text" which stands for illusive, both specular and speculative, unity of the self. Unity that is most desired, but always unattainable.

    The article constitutes an attempt to refl ect on the present condition and potential future of Polish studies (and the future of university humanistic studies in general) as seen through a simultaneous reading of the fi fth chapter of John Maxwell Coetzee’s book Elizabeth Costello, entitled Humanities in Africa and two short essays by a French philosopher and sociologist Jean Baudrillard, taken from his book Simulacra and Simulations. The main focus of attention is the threat of de-professionalization of humanistic studies associated with the uncontrolled multiplication of new critical languages, the disappearance of ideological and competence arguments and an uncritical cult of radical inventiveness which is not accompanied by an accumulation of knowledge.

    The allegorical story entitled At the Gate, which appeared as the eighth chapter of Elizabeth Costello, a novel by John M. Coetzee, ostentatiously alludes to the famous parable by Franz Kafka, Before the Law. Deconstructing an allegory with its own devices, Coetzee points to the need to replace allegorical reading, transform vague narrative meanings into unambiguous ideological senses, with interpretation, which always has to negotiate between the rule of the Law and the idiomatic singular voice, since both of them — the Law, as well as the narrative — are equally necessary to make interpretation possible. Rhetorically, it means replacing a readable allegory with a catachresis, which, by its ambiguous and intermediate status, eludes the opposition of the original and the figurative, situating itself into the borderland between them. Thus, it is a catachresis which becomes a figure of literature, which cannot make unambiguous ideological choices, but at the same time it cannot avoid them, if it is to hold any existential value.

    Różewicz. Necrographies The article deals with the phenomenon of an insistent and recurring interrelation between the living and the dead in Tadeusz Różewicz’s works. This motif – strictly connected with the generational and individual trauma of war experiences – manifests itself not only in the symbolic forms of memoirs and recollections, but also through the visions of physical, all-too-real presence of profaned, unburied dead bodies, taking revenge on the survivor tormented by ambivalent feelings of guilt and shame. All this leads to the emergence of the spectral ‘un-dead’ in Różewicz’s poetry. The analysis of this phantasmatic fi gure in the complementary – anthropological and poetological – perspectives becomes the main subject of the article.

    Artykuł jest próbą analizy trzech trybów autobiograficznego pisarstwa Witolda Gombrowicza. Pierwszy z nich, zorientowany prospektywnie, służy przede wszystkim autokreacji i rzutowaniu w przyszłość kolejnych, tworzonych przez pisarza podmiotowych autoprojekcji. Realizację tej podmiotowej strategii przynosi Dziennik, któremu przypada szczególne miejsce między autonomiczną, eksperymentalną fikcją literacką a tradycyjną narracją autobiograficzną. Drugi tryb ma charakter retrospektywny, najbardziej zbliżony do tradycyjnej autobiografii. Wyróżnia go dominacja narracji wspomnieniowej, podporządkowanej chronologicznemu następstwu zdarzeń. Spotykamy się z nią we Wspomnieniach polskich oraz w Testamencie. Trzeci tryb, wykorzystany przez Gombrowicza w Kronosie, realizuje się w postaci swoistego kalendarium czy inwentarza, nawiązującego do nieliterackich, użytkowych form osobistych zapisków, i nie mieści się w żadnym z dwóch przywołanych wcześniej strategii pisarstwa autobiograficznego, lokując się na obrzeżach zarówno narracyjnej konwencji wspomnieniowej, jak i konwencji dziennikowej podporządkowanej zasadzie eseistyczno-autoportretowej. Analiza tych trzech odmian tekstu autobiograficznego ma pokazać, że nie składają się one na żadną spójną, wieloaspektową wizję podmiotu, każdy z nich odsłania bowiem na swój sposób właściwą Gombrowiczowskiej formule autobiografizmu nieciągłość i pustkę odkrywaną w miejscu powracającego uporczywie pragnienia osobowej, mocnej obecności.
    This article is an attempt to analyse the three modes of autobiographical writing of Witold Gombrowicz. The first of the modes is prospectively oriented and its purpose is to self-create and project into the future the successive subjective self-images created by the author. Diary, which takes a particular place between the autonomous, experimental fiction and traditional autobiographical narration, brings implementation of this strategy. The second mode is retrospective in nature and the most similar to the traditional autobiography. It is distinguished by the dominance of the reminiscent narration subordinated to the chronological sequence of events. We encounter it in Polish Memories and in A Kind of Testament. The third mode used by Gombrowicz in Kronos is implemented in the form of a specific historical calendar or inventory alluding to non-literary practical forms of personal notes and does not fit in any of the two previously mentioned autobiographical writing strategies, locating itself on the edge of both; the narrative convention of memories, as well as the diary convention subject to essayistic and self-portrait principles. Analysis of these three varieties of the autobiographical text shows that they do not make up for any coherent, multi-faceted vision of the subject. Each of them reveals in their own way the “Gombrowicz-like” autobiographical formula of discontinuity and emptiness that are discovered in the place of persistently recurring desire of a strong personal presence.

    In my article, I attempt to analyze the philosophical and artistic premises of the autobiographical project realized in the poetry of Marcin Świetlicki. I try to show that this project leads to negation of the need of existence, both in the order of a work and in the order of existence, of a distinct form of subjective identity, typical for the modern culture of presence. The subject of my interest is a peculiar kind of lyrical autobiographical narrative which I analyze referencing, among others, the concept of authenticity understood in the context of de Man’s approach to irony. In the final part of the article, I suggest a possible direction of considerations concerning the eponymous phenomenon of nonexistence as a negative, “phantom” form of presence that escapes presentation

    Artykuł pokazuje najważniejsze skutki procesu demontażu metodologicznych i epistemologicznych podstaw nowoczesnej teorii literatury, który w polskim literaturoznawstwie przybrał postać skokowej i często dość powierzchownej asymilacji radykalnych wniosków płynących z dwóch zwrotów metodologicznych – poststrukturalnego i kulturowego. Jedną z najpoważniejszych konsekwencji owego procesu było nazbyt łatwe wyrzeczenie się przez literaturoznawstwo odrębności własnego przedmiotu i własnej metodologii badawczej, będące konsekwencją kulturowej reorientacji studiów literackich. Doprowadziło to do zastąpienia teorii literatury przez ogólną teorię kultury i uczynienia z tekstu literackiego zaledwie jednego z wielu równoprawnych przedmiotów kulturotwórczej praktyki. Na tle nowoczesnej teorii literatury, która posiada już dzisiaj wyłącznie charakter historyczny, poetyka okazuje się dyscypliną nie tylko żywotną i ekspansywną (o czym świadczy wykorzystywanie przez inne dziedziny wiedzy wypracowanych przez nią pojęć i kategorii), ale także nieodzowną dla dalszego trwania kulturowo zorientowanych studiów literacki. Tylko ona bowiem dostarcza narzędzi pozwalających skutecznie argumentować na rzecz odrębności i specyfiki literatury jako pod wieloma względami uprzywilejowanej formy poznania i ekspresji kulturowego doświadczenia człowieka, wyróżniającej się szczególnymi właściwościami formalnymi i semantycznymi, czyniącymi z niej jedyny w swoim rodzaju kod międzyludzkiej komunikacji.
    The article attempts to show the most important consequences of the process by which the methodological and epistemological foundations of modern literary theory have been dismantled, a process which in Polish literature studies has been characterized by a sweeping, yet often superficial assimilation of the radical conclusions issuing from two methodological turns—the Post-Structuralist turn and the cultural turn. One of the most serious consequences of this process was literature studies’ too easy renunciation of the separate status of its subject and scholarly apparatus, which occurred as a result of the cultural reorientation of the literary studies field. This led to the replacement of literary theory by a generalized cultural theory and the reduction of the literary text to the status of merely one of many equal subjects of cultural production practices. Against the background of modern literary theory, which now has become a purely historical phenomenon, poetics is revealed to be a discipline possessing not only vitality and expansiveness (a fact testified to by other fields’ appropriation of concepts and categories developed by poetics), but also indispensable to the continued life of culturally-oriented literary studies. For only poetics provides the tools that enable us persuasively to argue in favor of the separate status and specificity of literature as a form of knowledge and cultural expression of human experience which is in many ways privileged, standing out due to its specific formal and semantic properties, which make it a unique code for communication between and among human beings.

    Inspiracją do napisania artykułu stało się wydanie książki Braterstwo poezji, zbierającej korespondencję, wiersze, rozmowy i teksty dyskursywne dokumentujące wieloletni dialog dwóch wybitnych polskich poetów: Czesława Miłosza i Tadeusza Różewicza. W artykule odnoszę się do trzech kwestii: paryskiego spotkania obu poetów w 1957 roku, okoliczności i formy poetyckiego powitania Różewicza przez Miłosza, jakim była publikacja wiersza Do Tadeusza Różewicza, poety, oraz uparcie ponawianych oskarżeń o nihilizm, formułowanych przez autora Ocalenia pod adresem młodszego poety. Na tych trzech przykładach staram się pokazać, że wykorzystana w tytule tomu i w eseju wprowadzającym autorstwa Andrzeja Franaszka metafora duchowego braterstwa nie oddaje złożoności i ambiwalencji wpisanej w relację obu poetów, zwłaszcza zaś w pełen dystansu i rezerwy stosunek Miłosza do światopoglądu i poetyckiej filozofii Różewicza.
    This paper is directly inspired by the publication of the book Braterstwo poezji, which is a collection of correspondence, poems, conversations and discursive texts documenting the long-term dialogue of two outstanding Polish poets: Czesław Miłosz and Tadeusz Różewicz. In the article I refer to three issues: the Paris meeting of the two poets in 1957, the circumstances and form of the poetic welcome extended by Miłosz to Różewicz through the poem “Do Tadeusza Różewicza, poety,” and the accusations of nihilism stubbornly leveled by the author of Ocalenie against the younger poet. By means of these three examples, i try to show that the metaphor of spiritual brotherhood advanced in the title of the volume and in the introductory essay by Andrzej Franaszek does not reflect the complexity and ambivalence inherent in the poets’ relationship, especially of Miłosz’s distant and reserved attitude to the worldview and poetic philosophy of Różewicz.
