Opis:
The presented method for defining the conditions of safe operation of marine ferries in ferry terminals allows verification of shipowner ferry designs. In the first stage of this method, simulations are used to determine the allowable wind speed. The second stage comprises simulations of ferry berthing aimed at defining safe manoeuvring areas, the energy of berthing impact and propeller stream speeds at allowable wind speeds. The method was used in the design of a 228 m long hybrid ferry.

Opis:
Bioaerosols are particularly sensitive to sterilization processes due to their biological characteristics. Phenomena occurring in the atmosphere have major influence on airborne bacteria and fungi concentration levels. The presented study evaluates the sterilization properties of ambient air temperature and solar radiation on viable bioaerosols concentration levels in outdoor air in Gliwice, Poland. Assigned were the breakpoints indicating limited stimulation properties of the air temperature, which amounted 7.5 °C for bacterial aerosol and 16.5 °C for fungal aerosol. Also revealed was the influence of solar radiation properties on decreasing the bioaerosols concentration levels. Both bacterial and fungal viable aerosol were sensitive to this radiation, although the phenomenon was more effective for airborne bacteria.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present a modern method of convective drying intensification caused by the external action of ultrasound. The purpose of this study is to discover the mechanism of ultrasonic interaction between the solid skeleton and the moisture in pores. This knowledge may help to explain the enhancement of drying mechanism affected by ultrasound, particularly with respect to biological products like fruits and vegetables. The experimental kinetics tests were conducted in a hybrid dryer equipped with a new ultrasonic generator. The drying kinetics curves determined on the basis of drying model developed by the author were validated with those by the ones obtained from experimental tests. The intensification of heat and mass transfer processes due to ultrasound induced heating effect and vibration effect are analysed. The obtained results allow to state that ultrasound makes drying processes more effective and enhance the drying efficiency of biological products without significant elevation of their temperature.

Nanostructured, biocompatible, TiC/Ti Supersonic Cold Gas Sprayed coatings were deposited onto a Ti6Al4V alloy and their microstructure, wear resistance and hardness were investigated. The starting nanostructured powder, containing a varied mixture of Ti and TiC particles, was produced by high energy ball milling. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used for structural and chemical analyses of powder particles and coatings. Coatings, 250-350 μm thick, preserving the nanostructure and chemical powder composition, with low porosity and relatively high hardness (~850 HV), were obtained. These nanostructured TiC/Ti coatings exhibited better tribological properties than commonly used biomedical benchmark materials, due to an appropriate balance of hard and soft nano-phases.

Dzięki nanostrukturalnej budowie powłok, właściwej proporcji faz twardych i miękkich, natryskiwane zimnym gazem powłoki wykazują lepsze właściwości trybologiczne w porównaniu z materiałami standardowo stosowanymi w przemyśle i bioinżynierii.
The basic scientific and technological aim of the research was the generation of nano-structured FeCuAl-Al2O3, WC-CoAl, Ni-Sn, TiC/Ti coatings having thicknesses of about 100-500 μm. High energy ball milling synthesis allowed the production of powders characterized by fine and homogeneous chemical distribution of elements, and an "ultrafine" (nanometer scale) crystalline structure. A new powerful deposition technology (Cold Gas Spray – CGS) was used to transfer the nanophased powder onto the substrate in the form of a dense coating with very little or no change of crystal structure and properties. The microstructure and composition of all prepared nano-powders and deposited coatings were investigated using light microscopy, TEM, STEM, SEM/EDS, XPS and XRD techniques. Hardness, and measurement of the coefficient of friction and wear resistance were carried out on the deposited coatings. It was found that the microstructure of the powder is maintained in the deposited coating. The nano phased structure, with an appropriate balance of hard and soft phases, allows the CGS coatings to exhibit better tribological properties than that of the examined benchmark materials.

Opis:
The Białowieża Forest (BF) is in many respects an exceptional object, of a great importance for nature protection and forest management, at the international scale. The BF plays also a key role from the point of view of regional development and welfare of local community. In the last period, a big threat for multiple values of the BF has arisen, as a result of enormous bark beetle infestation, which started in 2012 and has killed 1.4 million m3 of spruce trees. In the paper, first, a brief overview of the general history of the BF and an account of long−term human impacts on its functioning and structure is provided. Next, the history of bark beetle infestations in the BF is analysed. It is shown that, in the period 1992−2007, the average volume of spruces killed by bark beetle amounted on average to 20,000 m3 of wood annually. During that period practically all dead trees were removed from the forest by means of salvation cuttings. Starting from 2008, more and more trees infested by European spruce bark beetle were left in the forest, in a result of a pressure exerted by environmental groups. In 2012, Minister of Environment decided to reduce the allowable cut, determined in forest management plans elaborated for the managed part of the BF, from 107,000 to 48,500 m3/year. This decision, along with several other regulations and restrictions, made in practice impossible to stop the development of a current bark beetle infestation, which started in 2011 and intensified during the next 6 years (solely in 2016 bark beetles killed 480,000 m3 of spruce trees). In the paper, the most important implications and consequences of the current situation are briefly summarized and discussed. A special attention is given to the problems concerning: 1) protection of Natura 2000 species and sites (endangered by bark beetle outbreak), 2) a negative influence of large amounts of spruce deadwood on forest soils, 3) threats caused by pathogenic fungi, 4) question of public safety, 5) fire hazard, and 6) economical dimension. The legal and socio−economical foundations of the functioning of Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts comprising the managed part of the BF, as well as their most important environmental and social consequences are discussed too. Among others, it is indicated that, under current conditions of the BF, human intervention plays a key role in maintaining stable and compositionally diverse woodland communities. Finally, several suggestions and recommendations are provided, aimed at, in the short term, breaking off the current bark beetle outbreak, and, in the long term, at maintaining a multifunctional character of the BF and its ability to provide all important ecosystem services on a sustainable basis.

Opis:
A method for creating linearly polarized positrons and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) atoms with the J-PET detector is presented. The unique geometry and properties of the J-PET tomography enable one to design a positron source such that the quantization axis for the estimation of the linear polarization of produced o-Ps can be determined on the event by event basis in a direction of the positron motion. We intend to use ²²Na or other β⁺ decay isotopes as a source of polarized positrons. Due to the parity violation in the beta decay, the emitted positrons are longitudinally polarized. The choice of the quantization axis is based on the known position of the positron emitter and the reconstructed position of the positronium annihilation. We show that the J-PET tomography is equipped with all needed components.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron emission tomograph is a device allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the Jagiellonian PET will allow positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the Jagiellonian PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.

Opis:
The aim of the study conducted in the years 2014-2016 was to determine the effects of different irrigation systems and doses of different organic fertilizers on the yield of crisphead lettuce. The experiments were conducted in a certified organic field of the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. The study compared micro-sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation and the control combination (without irrigation). The fertilization combinations involved the use of compost at 30 t/ha, Ekofert L in a dose corresponding to 50 and 100 kg N/ha, Fertilan L in a dose corresponding to 50 and 100 kg N/ha, and the control (no fertilizer). It was found that the use of irrigation in the first and third year of the study did not produce positive results, which was due to sufficient rainfall that fully satisfied the water requirements of lettuce plants. However, with a total rainfall not exceeding 80 mm (in 2015), the use of the irrigation systems had a significant impact on yield. Compared with the control, the irrigation with micro-sprinklers in 2015 increased the yield of lettuce by 35%, and in the case of drip irrigation by 40%. The response of lettuce plants to the applied organic fertilization varied in the individual years of the study; however, of all the tested fertilization treatments, the use of compost at 30 t/ha produced the best yield-enhancing effect. Fertilization with the lucerne-based fertilizers resulted in an increase in yield, in relation to the control combination, in only one year of the study (2015). The results showed that the organic fertilizers Ekofert L and Fertilan L were slow-acting fertilizers because their impact on the yield of lettuce, a plant with a short vegetative period, was relatively small. These fertilizers are more effective in the cultivation of species that have a long period of vegetative growth.

We have studied oxidation kinetics of Fe thin film under atmospheric conditions using the fact that metallic iron is a ferromagnet but ultrathin natural iron oxides are approximately nonmagnetic at room temperature. As a consequence, oxidation is associated with a loss in total Fe magnetic moment. Results show that the sample with an initial Fe thickness equal to 10 nm oxidize relatively fast (time constant τ=0.05 day), whereby a constant amount of 2.5 nm of metal is transformed into oxides. For lower iron initial thickness (d_{i}=4 nm) the time constant for oxidation significantly increases reaching a value of 2 days. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies performed after 144 days of oxidation revealed formation of hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) thin film on the metallic rest of iron.

The use of suitable materials for the preparation of sealing grout is an important issue from the point of view of the correct construction of borehole heat exchangers and geothermal wells. The minimization of the loss of heat during the transport of thermal water in geothermal wells can be achieved by use of sealing slurries with reduced thermal conductivity. Such slurries are also recommended in the upper part of deep borehole heat exchangers and the upper part of energy piles. The publication describes the impact of the addition of diatomite as a material lowering the thermal conductivity of solidified grout.

Opis:
The fast development of low-temperature geothermal energy affects the search for newer and newer solutions and materials used in the construction of borehole heat exchangers. One of the most important factors affecting the correct operation of heat pump systems with borehole heat exchangers is appropriately selected solidified grout. Solidifies grout has to be characterized by the highest thermal conductivity and good sealing borehole heat exchangers. The paper will present the impact of graphite on the thermal conductivity of solidified grout.
