Opis:
Warszawski, elektrostatyczny akcelerator typu Van de Graaffa „Lech” był urządzeniem całkowicie zbudowanym w kraju. Akcelerator rozpoczął pracę w 1961 r. w Instytucie Badań Jądrowych (IBJ) w Warszawie. Konstrukcja akceleratora rozpoczęła się w 1953 r. w Instytucie Fizyki Doświadczalnej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Po wielu ulepszeniach i modyfikacjach akcelerator posiadał następujące parametry: energia cząstek naładowanych od 0,1 do 3,2 MeV, stabilność energii ok. 1 keV, natężenie prądu do 50 μA, przyspieszane cząstki: protony, deuterony, jony 3He i 4He. Akcelerator był głównie używany do badań podstawowych z dziedziny fizyki jądrowej i prac aplikacyjnych stosujących metody fizyki jądrowej w innych dziedzinach fizyki i technologii.
The Warsaw pressurised accelerator „Lech” of the Van de Graaff type was a completely home-made machine. It began operation in 1961 at the Institute of Nuclear Research. Construction of the accelerator was begun in 1953 by the Institute of Experimental Physics of Warsaw University. After several improvements and modifications the accelerator had the following parameters: energy from 0.1 to 3.2 MeV, energy stability about 1 keV, ion current up to 50 μA, accelerated particles protons, deuterons, 3He and 4He. The accelerator was mainly used for basic research in nuclear physics and for application of nuclear research methods in other field of physics and technology.

Opis:
To use effectively any radiation detector in high-temperature plasma experiments, it must have a lot of benefits and fulfill a number of requirements. The most important are: a high energy resolution, linearity over a wide range of recorded particle energy, high detection efficiency for these particles, a long lifetime and resistance to harsh conditions existing in plasma experiments and so on. Solid-state nuclear track detectors have been used in our laboratory in plasma experiments for many years, but recently we have made an attempt to use these detectors in spectroscopic measurements performed on some plasma facilities. This paper presents a method that we used to elaborate etched track diameters to evaluate the incident projectile energy magnitude. The method is based on the data obtained from a semiautomatic track scanning system that selects tracks according to two parameters, track diameter and its mean gray level.

Opis:
We tried to repeat the observation of the ferromagnetic response in proton and He-irradiated carbon made by the group of Esquinazi et al. We used $He^+$ and $H^+$ beams focused on graphite sample. The amount of charge deposited in the sample was comparable to the amount of charge used by Esquinazi. Magnetic measurements were performed in SQUID magnetometer. The magnetization of the samples before and after irradiation was compared. We did not observe any ferromagnetic enhancement of magnetization of our irradiated samples. Even if experiment was not the same as Esqinazi's one, we can exclude some of the mechanisms of ferromagnetism proposed by Esquinazi.

Opis:
An interdisciplinary study of metallic objects from selected archaeological sites in Poland was performed. The aim of the project was to obtain information about the chemical composition and structural changes of the objects. Furthermore, the research results provided information about the technological process which was used to manufacture the artifacts. The materials research had a non- and micro-invasive character which is very important in this type of investigation. The main experimental tools were particle-induced X-ray emission supplemented with nuclear reaction thermal neutron (white beam) radiography, scanning electron microscopy with X-ray energy dispersive analysis, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry techniques. The results show that the artifacts were made by a secondary smelting process used in local metallurgy manufactures.

Opis:
Egypt has a lot of ancient monasteries and churches, which were decorated with different kinds of wall paintings. Structure of these wall paintings consists of support, plaster and painting layers. Paintings deterioration is primarily due to physicochemical, natural and human factors. The most detrimental factors are bat patches, old varnish and organic waste of birds. All these lead to the gradual disappearance of paintings. Modern technology of conservation is focused on application of new materials for cleaning of wall paintings. Here we report on the use of enzymes, for cleaning surface of coptic wall paintings. Analytical techniques such as particle induced X-ray emission, Fourier transform infrared and optical microscopy were used to evaluate the enzymatic cleaning processes of coptic wall paintings and to identify the chemical composition of red, yellow and white pigments. Particle induced X-ray emission results indicated that there is no change in the chemical composition of the materials and pigments due to enzymatic cleaning. Fourier transform infrared and optical microscopy results confirmed the stability of organic medium before and after treatment of different kind of patches.

Opis:
Si-Mn alloy with a Mn content of a few percent is potentially a candidate for room temperature (RT) dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS). However, the present methods of material manufacture suffer from problems with poor Mn solubility and thermodynamical limitations. We study a non-equilibrium method in which silicon is first implanted with 160 keV manganese ions to a dose of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 and next either irradiated with 1.5 MeV 4He+ ions from the Warsaw Van de Graaff accelerator at 400°C or treated with high-energy hydrogen plasma pulses. Conclusion from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) examination of the samples is that both approaches lead to recovery of crystalline surface layer with manganese occupying off-substitutional sites. The potential development of the method is discussed.

Opis:
Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) have been used for the registration of charged particles practically since the beginning of the 1960s, when a new class of detectors, called dielectric track detectors, were discovered. The paper describes applications of the SSNTDs type PM-355 for diagnostics of fusion-reaction protons and other ions emitted from plasma focus (PF) devices, tokamaks and laser facilities. Such detectors were also used in biomedical experiments for beam profile measurements. The results of our calibration studies of SSNTDs as well as charged particle- and biomedical measurements, which were carried out within different facilities, are presented.

Opis:
Ionizing radiation induces a variety of DNA lesions, including single and double strand breaks. Large energy deposition precisely localized along the ion track that occurs in the case of heavy ion irradiation can lead to complex types of DNA double strand breaks in exposed biological material. The formation of nuclear double strand breaks triggers phosphorylation of histone H2AX, which can be microscopically visualized as foci in the γ-H2AX assay. Studies with a carbon ion beam are being carried out at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. The γ-H2AX assay as a method of measuring the biological response of cells irradiated with $\text{}^{12}C$ ions as well as the frequency cluster size distributions obtained in the nanodosimetry experiment at HIL will be presented.
