- This article is an attempt to describe the model of upbringing of the girls in 16th century polish society. Basing on a critical review of a juridical, religious, and guidance literature, the author tries to present parenting methods, the archetype of a daughter, her position in a family and the attitude to her sexuality. Women’s independence was regarded as a danger to social order, therefore upbringing strategies focused on forcing girls to obedience. The emphasis was placed on female sexual behaviour, which was strictly bounded with an honour of a family. Ruthlessness and refraining from demonstrating feelings enabled parents to enforce discipline and children’s dependence. Upbringing methods consisted on physical violence as well as seclusion from the world and normative restriction.
