Opis:
Due to the long period of service degradation, bridge structures require periodic technical inspections and assessment of the current load capacity. Since the 1970s, this assessment has been carried out according to the Fitness for Purpose (PUK) criterion. From 2008, the PUK criterion has been replaced with the recommendations of the European Convention on Steel Structures (ECCS). As part of these recommendations, the authors decided to explain the previously obtained unrealistic values of the fatigue class Δσϲ of the bridge butt joints covered with one-sided rhomb-shaped cover plates. The computational analysis performed with the FEM method gave excellent results which are briefly presented in the article.

The aim of this article is to present the results of ethnographical studies of the Amazonian community Limoncocha (Sucumbíos, Ecuador), considering its cultural background in the context of sustainable development. Our scientific purposes were to examine connections between Limoncochans' values, lifestyle and objectives in the context of their business goals, which are important for maintaining biodiversity and nature protection in the region. In our research we were interested in the historical, social, economic and cultural conditions that underlie the development of this community. We discuss contemporary attitudes of its inhabitants toward civilizational progress, sustainable development and ways of social organization, as significantly influenced by a unique way of settling down this community – formed by American missionaries from the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Instituto Linguistico de Verano) in the 1950s. The grounded theory methodology was used as an analytical tool for the elaboration of data, and we also implemented triangulation presumptions. We used several techniques of data collection: representative survey among Limoncocha parish inhabitants, over 30 in-depth interviews, photo elicitation interviews, documents' analyses, and numerous quasi-participant observations. During our research we obtained strong evidence for a connection between the visible spirit of communitarianism and the entrepreneurship activities of locals, both of which affect regional development. Inhabitants represent strong egalitarian tendencies that have a visible impact on their business activities and the economic prospects of Limoncocha. The first representative survey and our observations in this area gave us the possibility to formulate some recommendations for the Ecuadorian government and local authorities for implementation of cooperation model with the local community to achieve sustainable development protecting the natural environment. Key words: ethnography, local community, qualitative methods, quantitative methods, grounded theory, environmental protection, sustainable development, Ecuador, Limoncocha, Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL)

Opis:
The book by David Goode gives us a possibility to take an extraordinary excursion to unremarkable and inscrutable world, so common for us that we do not usually notice it, although we participate in it everyday. It is a reconstructed world that shows us methods that we use in mundane life to establish an order in it and to live with others going through concrete situations. Our live consists of just these situations that we live by (as playing with a dog, talking with others, lining up the store, etc.) and not of socio – demographic data from the end of sociological questionnaires and of many other abstractions used by sociologists. What is observable and analisable not always becomes a topic of the sociological research. Ethnomethodology, a perspective used in the book, wants just to go into details and to extract them to the surface. We should not rest our analysis on the “shadows” of reality, that are cast by still available and analyzable empirical phenomena, although difficult to analyze because of sociological methods and common sense perception used by sociologists.

The paper deals with the issue of “serendipity” (which constitutes the context of discovery) in field research and the analysis of data by using the grounded theory methodology. The thesis of the paper is: the methodology of grounded theory is naturally associated with serendipity. We describe two aspects of serendipity in grounded theory: 1. substantive, and 2. theoretical. We present in the paper serendipity phenomenon by using the case of research on the “social world of pet owners”. We show how the research is developed by a sequence of decisions being made by researchers. The process of emergence of the main analytical category, subcategories and the whole theoretical construction during the long time of the field research and theoretical group analysis is presented, as well as the procedure of coming to unanticipated theoretical conclusions. It was all possible because of the interactional character of serendipity happening during the research in grounded theory style of investigation.

Opis:
The article addresses the problem of perceiving and experiencing one’s body within the yoga practice. The process of becoming a yogi is related to the practices of the body and to further defining them; next, to the defined perception of the body and its sensations. Becoming a hatha-yoga practitioner is a specific process. In this paper I describe its phases: 1. The introductory phase – constructing the motives and first steps; 2. Phase of the deeper recognition of psycho-physical effects of yoga practice and of attributing them with adequate meanings; 3. Phase of the deeper recognition of hatha-yoga spiritual aspects (quasi-religion). At the moment of significant involvement in hatha-yoga practice and defining corporeal practices in terms of being bodily and mental at the same time, the mind – body rapport compound. The work over the body may transform the Western perspective of defining the body as a substantial element of human existence (Cartesian vision) into treating it as a spiritualized matter (vision of Eastern philosophy). If, however, the tenets of other religions are maintained as one’s own (e.g., catholic religion), the transformation at hand will not proceed. In that case, in order to reconcile the conventional religion tenets with new spiritual experiences, changes in body and mind need to be defined in any other way, and a specific linguistic explanations of these changes (often adopting the scheme of constant linguistic formulas) need to occur.

SOCIOLOGY OF WORK
SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM

Opis:
The paper is a sociological commentary on work made during translation of scientific texts, in this case, some sociological texts (mainly books). It is based on the empirical research on 'translation work'. The interpretive perspective comes from the foregoing subdisciplines of sociology: sociology of work and sociology of management. These subdisciplines seem to be helpful in analysis of translations and may inspire the sociology of translation. The main goal of the paper is to show intersubjectivity problem in the systems of decisions made during translations and work on scientific translations in Poland. These decisions have often got an ad hoc character and are often based on business, not academic, criterions (lack of scientific editors of translations or editors/translators are chosen according to the financial criterion not the competence one). The decisions of choosing the scientific editors are also based on criterion of the editor's position in the hierarchy of academic-social-world and on basic and tacit assumptions regarding high qualifications and the expertise of editors (or sometimes translators) with academic titles. However, it does not protect us against the errors in translations and even could constitute the cause of generating errors. There is a lack of discussions on what should be translated, and how should be translated. The decisions and work on translations are closed in a certain 'square' of decisions (publisher, scientific editor, translator, author of original text) to which the academic world and experts in a particular subdiscipline have no access. Probably this problem concerns not only translations of sociological books but is also present in other disciplines. The texts recipients are ignored in the system of translation decisions. 'The closed translation square' (publisher, editor, translator, possibly author of original text) creates the other side as a 'square of reception'. The closed circle of readers is left without any knowledge about quality of translations, or without the communication channels that would allow any expression of their dissatisfaction or an intellectual and linguistic disagreement regarding some aspects of texts' translation. Both the translations' politics, and the lack of authentic scientific discussion during the translation of sociological texts process create the divisions inside the academic world that constantly reproduce and create the increase of poor sociological texts translations' quality. Creation of a platform for the discussion on the aforementioned topics can improve greater responsibility of the subjects participating in the translation's process, improve the quality of translation, and finally open the 'translation square'. Open Access translating projects realized on the on-line journals' websites could be some remedy to the 'squarness of translation' which by making the process of translation more open, could turn it into an intersubjective endeavour in the academic world.

I would like to present the possibility of broadening the traditional methodological and technical skills of researcher and analyst, but also the intellectual capacity of the researcher associated with combining data, categorizing, linking categories, as well as the interpretation of the causes and consequences of the emergence of certain social phenomena. Some methodologies, methods, and research techniques are more conducive to creative conceptual and interpretive solutions. Therefore, I describe the serendipity phenomenon in such methodologies as grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenological research, and contemplative inquiry. The problem of intuition in qualitative research will be also described in the paper. There will be presented also some suggestions how to be creative in qualitative research. From the review of issues of creativity in qualitative research we can derive the following conclusions: Creativity in qualitative research depends on the strength of a priori conceptualization and stiffness of the adapted methods of research and analysis. If the methodology is more flexible (as the methodology of grounded theory), the researcher can get to phenomena that he/she has not realized and which are still scantily explored in his/her field of expertise. The phenomenological and contemplative approaches allow the use of the investigator’s feelings and experience as they appear in the studied phenomena, which usually does not take place in objectifying and positivistic research. The investigator may therefore consciously use these methodologies and approaches that foster creativity. The researchers can improve their skills in thinking and creative action by doing some methodical exercises (journal writing, writing poetry as a summary of the collected data, the use of art as representation of the phenomenon, the use of meditation, observation of the body feelings, humor, etc.).

Opis:
The paper deals with the concept of empathy applied in the contemplative experiment to understand the suffering of the victims of the war in Ukraine. I discuss the concept of empathy in the phenomenological perspective and symbolic interactionists’ view. I needed this discussion to frame the conclusions from the contemplative experiment I did with my students. I used the contemplative methods of research. The students did self-observations and self-reports on their lived experiences while observing photos of the victims and refugees from Ukraine. Breathing exercises (pranayama) were practiced between different self-observations to clean the minds and release tensions. At the end of the experiment, the students were also asked about the empathy deficit in contemporary society, and provided comments on it. Finally, I concluded how empathy is evoked and embodied, and I answered the question about whether it is possible to be empathetic toward people in a totally different and traumatic situation. I end with the statement that empathy is a direct reaction to the condition of the suffering of other people. However, it is also socially-framed. I conclude that it could be socially-developed to cope with an empathy deficit.
Artykuł dotyczy koncepcji empatii zastosowanej w eksperymencie kontemplacyjnym w celu zrozumienia cierpienia ofiar wojny w Ukrainie. Omówiono w nim koncepcję empatii w odniesieniu do perspektywy fenomenologicznej i symbolicznego interakcjonizmu. Dyskusja ta była autorowi potrzebna do osiągnięcia pewnej ramy interpretacyjnej wniosków z eksperymentu kontemplacyjnego, który przeprowadził ze studentami. W eksperymencie zastosowano kontemplacyjne metody badawcze. Studenci wykonywali autoobserwacje i autoraportowanie swoich przeżyć podczas oglądania zdjęć ofiar wojny i uchodźców z Ukrainy. Ćwiczenia oddechowe (pranajama) były praktykowane pomiędzy różnymi autoobserwacjami, aby oczyścić umysły i uwolnić napięcia.

Dlatego opiszę zjawisko kontekstu odkrycia, będącego egzemplifikacją nowych twórczych rozwiązań, w odniesieniu do następujących metodologii: metodyki badawczej interakcjonizmu symbolicznego, badań kontemplatywnych, fenomenologii, etnografii, metodologii teorii ugruntowanej.
In this article, I would like to present a set of concepts that offer the possibility of, on the one hand, broadening the traditional, methodological, and technical skills of a researcher and a qualitative analyst, as well as, on the other, increasing the researcher’s intellectual capacity associated with combining categories, interpreting data, and interpreting the causes and effects of the emergence of certain social phenomena. The objective of the article is to indicate and describe some of the methodologies, methods, and research techniques, the recognition of which—as well as the use of certain resultant procedures—can be conducive to creative conceptual and interpretative solutions. Therefore, I am going to describe the serendipity phenomenon, which exemplifies new creative solutions with regard to the following research methodologies: symbolic interactionism, contemplative studies, phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory. Moreover, the question of intuition in qualitative research will be addressed as well. Some suggestions with regard to how to be creative in qualitative research will be presented as a consequence of the analyses of the above-mentioned concepts.
