Opis:
Anxiety disorders belong to the most common psychiatric diagnosis. Over the years, benzodiazepines were considered the gold standard for pharmacological treatment of anxiety. They are effective anxiolytics, but unfortunately the long-term use of benzodiazepines is accompanied by many adverse events. An alternative to classical anxiolytics is a relatively new class of psychotherapeutic drugs – azapirones. They are 5-HT1A partial agonists commonly used in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and as augmentation for SSRI in social anxiety disorder and depression. Due to the high ratio of benefits to risk, azapirones are extensively studied for their use in other disease entities. The aim of this article was to overviewed current information on azapirones. Their history of development, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, interactions, clinical use and their role in the modern pharmacotherapy of anxiety.

The brain-gut axis is a complex system of connections between the central nervous system (CNS) and the digestive tract. Information within the axis is transmitted through many pathways (neural, endocrine, metabolic, immunological) and is strongly dependent on the microbiota inhabiting the gut. Therefore, the brain-gut axis is also called the “brain-gut-enteric microbiota axis”. Many studies are carried out to determine how it functions but the exact mechanism is still poorly understood. Unraveling the mystery of brain-gut-enteric microbiota axis seems to be crucial in understanding of many diseases and processes governing the human body.

Opis:
The discovery of bacterium Helicobacter pylori and the association of its occurrence with gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. Almost 40 years have passed since that event, but we are still far from fully understanding of the impact of H. pylori infection on the human body. It is confirmed, that the infection causes chronic gastritis, which increases the risk of diseases such as: duodenal and/or gastric ulcer, gastric cancer and gastric MALT lymphoma. Nevertheless, constantly appear new studies linking H. pylori with many other disorders, often not directly related to the digestive system. Cardiovascular, neurological, hematological, dermatological, metabolic and also gynecological diseases are in sphere of assumptions. The authors of the following work attempted to select key information available in the medical literature on the discovery of H. pylori, epidemiology and pathophysiology of infection, as well as diseases to which it predisposes and the latest methods of eradication.

Opis:
Paraneoplastic syndrome (PS) is a dysfunction of organs or systems, associated with neoplastic disease, but not related to the local growth of tumor, metastasis or adverse anti-cancer drugs reactions. Neurological paraneoplastic syndromes (NPSs) may affect every region of a human nervous system - both central, peripheral, and/or autonomic nervous system. The symptoms are caused by a neoplastic process in other organ or system. PNSs usually precede the development of cancer for months or even years, and can be therefore useful diagnostic markers of cancer. They present an autoimmune background associated with the response of the immune system against cancer cells. In the blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with PNS appear onconeural antibodies, reacting with tumor antigens and the brain, the spinal cord and peripheral ganglia antigens. Many authors emphasize the significance of paraneoplastic syndromes in the modern oncology. Due to this reason, the knowledge of paraneoplastic syndromes and their mechanisms is very important in the contemporary medicine. The purpose of this research review is to summarize the information about the clinical features of the most common PNSs and the pathological mechanisms of their development.
