Opis:
When faced with a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, the patient attempts to cope with the stressful situation by applying coping strategies. The main aim of rheumatoid treatment is not only improving health but also increasing the quality of life. The research objective was to determine the relationship among socio-demographic factors, duration of the disease and its associated ailments, attitude to the disease, self-assessment of one’s knowledge of RA, and the application of coping strategies in stressful situations by women with rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 193 patients of the Clinic of Rheumatology and Systemic Connective Tissue Diseases, and the Rheumatology Unit of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic of the Independent Public Teaching Hospital No. 4 in Lublin, from November 2016 – June 2017. The Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE) Questionnaire and an author’s Original Questionnaire were used in the study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s range test were applied for statistical analysis. A p-value<0.05 defined the statistical differences. Analysis was performed using the commercial SPSS Statistics 19 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The respondents usually use instrumental social support (11.5±1.7), focus on and vent emotions (11.4±1.9), use emotional social support (11.4±1.8), employ active coping (11.4±2.1) and positive reinterpretation and growth (11.2±1.8), and least often rely on their sense of humour (5.5±1.4) or use alcohol or drugs (5±1.1). The factors which determine the types of strategy used are age, education, the duration of the disease, ailments experienced, and attitude towards the disease. Those respondents who declared a greater knowledge of RA more often applied positive reinterpretation and growth, and more rarely used alcohol or drugs. In the treatment and rehabilitation processes it is important to reinforce in the patient positive expectations for the treatment, seek advantages and benefits in one’s present health status, and educate patients about the disease, its therapy and appropriate coping strategies.

Opis:
In December 2019, a new disease, similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), was reported in Wuhan, China. It was quickly indicated that the causative agent of this new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a previously unknown coronavirus, now called SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The result of the global outbreak of COVID-19 in the world (currently COVID-19 is present on all continents, except Antarctica) is the pandemic status 2019–2020, as declared by the WHO and Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).The virus has a high epidemic potential and is effectively transmitted between humans. The primary route for SARS-CoV-2 infection to spread is air-droplet transmission. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, or indirectly via coronavirus-contaminated materials or objects. Current data also indicate the possibility of an alternative route of SARS-CoV-2 infection – through the gastrointestinal tract. The article discusses various SARS-CoV-2 transmission options, with particular attention paid to the role of saliva and gastrointestinal tract in the spreading of the virus. Current data on SARS-CoV-2 pathogenicity and clinical symptoms of COVID-19 are also analyzed. Expanding knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in terms of its spread, will contribute to further actions aimed at preventing transmission of this pathogen.

Opis:
One of the greatest challenges of nature conservation is to identify and locate networks of protected areas, which will preserve the biodiversity. The paper aims to show the ornithological value of the Sobibór Forests (E Poland) and to emphasize the fact that the network of Important Bird Areas (IBA) and Special Protection Areas within Natura 2000 (SPA) may require additions. The study was conducted in the period of 2008−2016, mainly on forested areas occupying 256 km2. The Sobibór Forests are characterized by a large diversity of habitats, but are mainly covered by Scots pine Pinus sylvestris. High diversity of wetlands and marshlands make the Sobibór Forest unique within the country. Three methodologies were used to estimate population size of chosen species: sampling, census and random observations. 31 species from Annex I of the Birds Directive plus 25 species of SPEC or non−SPECE category were observed which allows to consider this area as one of the most valuable for avifauna in Poland. Six breeding species classify the Sobibór Forests as the IBA and SPA. These species include Black Stork Ciconia nigra (8−13 breeding pairs), Common Crane Grus grus (80−120 breeding pairs), Grey Great Owl Strix nebulosa (0−7 breeding pairs i.e. 50−100% of Polish breeding population), Eagle Owl Bubo bubo (6 breeding pairs), White−backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos (40−70 breeding pairs) and Grey−headed Woodpecker Picus canus (20−40 breeding pairs). Six other species show potential for qualification, but not enough data has been collected yet. The list of this specie includes: Short−toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus, Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago, Stock Dove Columba oenas, European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus, Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis and Bluethroat Luscinia svecica. The Sobibór Forests occupy a small area compared to other IBA forests. However, the number of breeding species classifies the surveyed area as 7th among other IBAs. Moreover all eligible species may be considered as a bioindicators of the natural state of the forest. This is proof of the high natural value of this area.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system, characterized by the presence of scattered foci of demyelination in the brain and spinal cord. Magnesium (Mg) has a significant influence on the nervous system and the immune system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the concentration of Mg in the serum on the ability status of patients with MS. The study group consisted of 101 adults with diagnosed relapsing remitting MS. All participants were investigated on the Expanded Disability Status Scale. The control group included 41 people. The concentration of Mg in the serum was determined by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method. The patients completed a survey and a 24-hour dietary interview. In patients with MS, the percentage of respondents with normal magnesium content was significantly lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). The study proved that patients with normal Mg serum concentration levels were in better clinical condition, particularly with respect to the function of the pyramidal tract (p = 0.007) and sphincters (p = 0.002), than patients with inadequate levels of Mg in the serum. External factors such as gender, smoking, immunomodulating medications or dietary supplements of Mg were found to have no effect on the concentration of Mg in the serum of MS patients. The results of our study suggest that an abnormal concentration of Mg in the serum of MS patients should be recognized and corrected, as this may improve the health status of people with MS.

Opis:
4BrABT (2-(4-Bromophenylamino)-5-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole) is a compound known for its interesting in vitro anticancer profile. 4BrABT inhibited proliferation and motility of several cancer cell lines in concentrations which were not toxic to normal cells. A major problem associated with cancer chemotherapy, but also caused by environmental factors such as pesticides, is neurotoxicity. Therefore, the aim of the presented study was an in vitro evaluation of the neuroprotective activity of this compound. 4BrABT activity (1–100 μM) was tested in cultures of mouse neurons, rat astrocytes and rat oligodendrocytes. A possible protective action of the compound in different neurodegenerative models, as serum deprivation (SD), excitotoxicity (presence of 500 μM glutamate in culture medium), as well as cisplatin toxicity (astroglia – 50 μM and oligodendroglia – 100 μM) was investigated. Cell viability in the tested cultures was assessed with the use of LDH and MTT methods. Moreover, 4BrABT ability to prevent the cisplatin-induced apoptosis in astrocyte and oligodendrocyte cultures was analysed after Hoechst 33342 fluorostaining. The obtained results indicate that 4BrABT was not toxic to neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Moreover, a decrease in the neuronal LDH level was observed, which may suggest the ability of 4BrABT to act as a trophic agent. Furthermore, the protective action of the studied compound was shown in neuronal cultures exposed to neurotoxic conditions (presence of glutamate and trophic stress) and in cisplatin-treated astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. The expression of anticancer and neuroprotective activity raises hopes for the potential use of 4BrABT as a safe anticancer drug, or neuroprotective agent in chemotherapy-associated neurotoxicity.

Opis:
Malaria remains a major health issue In the world, while in Poland no cases of the indigenous disease have been observed since 60-ties of the last century, but the number of cases imported from the epidemic areas is increasing. The aim of work was to analyse the epidemiology of malaria diagnosed and treated in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology, Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin, Poland from 1.02.2010 until 31.01.2011. In total 11 cases were found, all diagnoses based on the thick and thin blood smear microscopy, alongside to the standard laboratory analyses. All clinical data presented are based on the case history. Results: Majoriry of cases reported travel to Sub-Saharan Africa (45%) or Indian subcontinent (27%). The travel was usually for recreational purposes, with significant proportion (45%) of patient not taking the malaria prophylaxis. Clinical course of infections was largely mild, with dominance of Pl. Falciparum parasitaemia. Fever was the most common clinical symptom (90%), while in the routine laboratory test no significant abnormalities, suggesting the disease, were found. Conclusions: malaria should be suspected in every case of the returning traveler with fever, especially if the travel was to the endemic area. The exclusion of the disease cannot be based on routine laboratory tests or quick immunoassays – thick and thin blood smear microscopy must be performed.
Do analizy zakwalifikowano 11 przypadków malarii hospitalizowanych w Oddziale Chorób Zakaźnych i Hepatologii.

Six radon laboratories, which perform indoor radon measurements to jointly investigate temporal variations of radon concentration in houses in a couple of regions in Poland, participated in the intercomparison exercise. There are involved three commercially available Hungarian RadoSys systems and four own laboratory methods. All of them are based on the etched-track CR-39 detectors. The intercomparison was conducted in a calibration laboratory of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR), Warsaw, Poland, accredited by the Polish Center for Accreditation (previously AP 101, at present AP 057). Comparison measurements were performed during three expositions in the CLOR’s radon calibration chamber under controlled normal climatic conditions and steady radon concentration. The results were referred to the value of the radon concentration determined by AlphaGUARD monitor traceable to the primary 222Rn standard in Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunchweig, Germany. The mean performance ratio defined as a ratio of the reference to participant’s result range from 0.88 to 1.31.

This paper addresses the synthesis problem of Jacobian inverse kinematics algorithms for stationary manipulators and mobile robots. Special attention is paid to the design of extended Jacobian algorithms that approximate the Jacobian pseudoinverse algorithm. Two approaches to the approximation problem are developed: one relies on variational calculus, the other is differential geometric. Example designs of the extended Jacobian inverse kinematics algorithm for 3DOF manipulators as well as for the unicycle mobile robot illustrate the theoretical concepts.

Opis:
PicoRad system based on activated charcoal collectors and liquid scintillation counter is one of the most popular passive methods of radon measurements which may be used both indoors and in other environments such as caves, tunnels, mines etc. It is well known that charcoal is also a very good adsorber of water vapor and it can reduce adsorption efficiency for radon. In PicoRad collectors, the charcoal is mixed with a dessicant to lower this effect. A series of expositions of PicoRad detectors was performed in a Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR) radon calibration/climatic chamber to study the effect of high relative humidity on the airborne radon concentration measurements and the dependence of the results on the duration of exposure. The results obtained from the PicoRad system were referred to the mean concentrations delivered by an AlphaGUARD monitor, Genitron (GmbH), Germany. The main conclusions are the following: 1) the PicoRad system results are not affected by high relative humidity, including extreme values of 90-96%, for the duration of exposure up to ca. 24 h; 2) in the relative humidity range of 75-96% the correction coefficient linearly depends on the duration of exposure reaching a value of ca. 16 for 96 h exposure; 3) the PicoRad system delivers results corresponding better to the mean value of radon concentration in the last 6 h interval of exposure than that in the whole exposure duration. This finding is particularly important for the calibration of PicoRad collectors in the conditions of decreasing radon concentration due to radon decay.

Opis:
Indoor radon concentration undergoes 24-hour and seasonal changes. The paper presents first in Poland results of radon concentration changeability in one building during the whole year. We performed 103 measurements of indoor radon concentrations. The following parameters of radon concentration distribution were obtained: arithmetic mean - 224.1 Bq m 3, geometric mean - 194.5 Bq m 3, median - 207 Bq m 3, and geometric standard deviation - 1.84. The minimum observed value was 22 Bq m 3 and the maximum - 748 Bq m 3. We determined the monthly and annual values of radon concentrations. The values for particular months are in the range of 0.5 to 1.6 of the annual mean. We observed a correlation between the mean radon concentrations in the examined buildings and the differences in the mean values of indoor (R = 0.91, p < 0.05) and outdoor temperatures (R = 0.91, p < 0.05). There was also a connection between the radon concentration inside the buildings and the changes in atmospheric pressure.

Opis:
In a region of two lithologic units: the Augustów Plane sandr and the Suwałki sands and fluvioglacial gravels, 134 measurements of radon concentrations in dwelling houses were performed. An integral method of solid state nuclear trace detectors (SSNTD) was used in the studies. Statistically significant differences in the radon concentrations in both geological units were obtained. The radon concentration arithmetic mean was 197 Bq m-3, geometric mean - 119 Bq m-3, median - 111 Bq m-3, the maximal value being 1225 Bq m-3 in the region of the Suwałki fluvioglacial sands and gravels. The Augustów Plane sandr revealed arithmetic mean of radon concentration equal to 123 Bq m-3, geometric mean – 80 Bq m-3, and median equal to 67 Bq m-3, maximal value 695 Bq m-3. The annual effective dose of the radon obtained by inhabitants of the Augustów Plane sandr is 1.7 mSv and for inhabitants of the Suwałki fluvioglacial sands and gravels it is 2.5 mSv.
