Opis:
In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are used as the reinforcement in an epoxy resin with weight percentages (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1)wt%, respectively, by using both direct (nonhomogeneous) and homogeneous dispersion mixing processes to prepare (epoxy/MWCNTs) nanocomposites. Tensile and drop weight impact tests are used to evaluate mechanical properties of the composites. Results show that homogeneous dispersion has a great effect on enhancing mechanical properties of multi-wall carbon nanotube reinforced composites. Adding 0.2 wt% of MWCNTs enhances and increases tensile properties, and adding 0.6 wt% of MWCNTs enhances impact properties.

The purpose of this paper is to show for parabolic systems how one can achieve a final gradient in a subregion w of the system domain W. First, we give a definition and delineate some properties of this new concept, and then we introduce the concept of regionally gradient strategic actuators. The importance of the spatial structure and location of the actuators in achieving regional gradient controllability is emphasized. Consequently, we concentrate on the determination of a control which would realize a given final gradient on w with minimum energy. The developed approach is original and leads to numerical algorithms for constructing optimal controls. This approach is also illustrated by an example.

Opis:
Objectives 1-hydroxypyrene is an important biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which appears in the urine of exposed human subjects. In developing countries, where advanced instruments are not available, the importance of this biomarker demands convenient and sensitive methods for determination purposes. This study aimed at developing a methodology to quantify 1-hydroxypyrene (a biomarker of PAHs exposure) based on the UV-visible detector in the reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Material and Methods A 20 μl injection of sample was used for manual injection into the HPLC Shimadzu, equipped with the SPD-20 A UV-visible detector, the LC-20AT pump and the DGU-20A5 degasser. The C-18 column was used for the purpose of the analysis. Results The method showed a good linearity (the range: R² = 0.979–0.989), and high detectability up to the nmol level. The average retention was 6.37, with the accuracy of 2%, and the percentage of recovery remained 108%. The overall performance of this method was comparable (in terms of detection sensitivity) and relatively better than previously reported studies using the HPLC system equipped with the UV-detector. Conclusions This method is suitable and reliable for the detection/quantification of the 1-OHP in human urine samples, using the UV-detector, however, it is less sensitive as compared to the results of a florescence detector.

Opis:
The present study aims at investigating and simulating the hydrogen cycle production at low temperatures using thermochemical reactions. The cycle used in this work is based on the dissociation of water molecules depending on a copper chlorine couple. Furthermore, the proposed method uses mainly thermal energy provided by a solar thermal field. This proposed cycle differs from what is found in the literature. However, most of the thermochemical cycles for hydrogen production work at quite high temperatures which is a technical challenge. Therefore, the maximum temperature used in the present cycle is limited to 500◦C. A thermodynamic analysis based on both the first and second laws is performed to evaluate the energy, exergy and efficiency of each reaction as well as the overall exergetic efficiency of the system. Furthermore, a parametric study is conducted to figure out the impact of the surrounding temperatures on the overall exergetic efficiency using commercial energy simulation software. The results show that the cycle can achieve an exergy efficiency of 30.5%.

Opis:
Bank filtration (BF) is a nature-based solution that can provide safe drinking water at a low cost, in being a green technology that benefits from natural ecosystem services and saves energy as well. The objective of the present paper is to evaluate the potentiality of a new site for bank filtration along a surface water source that experiences periods of both high and low flow. This site is located along the Ismailia Canal in the eastern Nile Delta fringe of Egypt. The present evaluation is based on exploratory drilling, installation of monitoring infrastructure and monitoring of both water level and water quality parameters for one year. The site has favourable hydrogeological conditions; the mean hydraulic conductivity of aquifer materials (sand and gravel) is 18.98 m/day. Moreover, there is a hydraulic connection between canal and aquifer; under steady conditions, the canal feeds the aquifer. Using different tracers, such as Cl, EC, Sr and SO4, the average bank filtration share is in excess of 95%. BF has reduced the particulates (turbidity) by 96%, total coliform by 99 % and total organic carbon (TOC) expressed as ultra-violet absorbance at 254 wavelengths (UVA254) by 44%. In addition, BF reduces concentrations of disinfection by-products due to its ability to remove organic matter. The potential degradation of TOC in the canal bed sediments may cause the release of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) to the bank filtrate water; this process is exaggerated during low-flow periods. Compared to conventional water treatment, BF is a cost-effective green technology, because no chemicals are used and no waste products are generated.

Bangladesh, a country that lies on the north shores of the Bay of Bengal, has been blessed with a plethora of natural resources. St. Martin’s Island, the only coral-bearing island in Bangladesh, is undoubtedly regarded as one of the most prized possessions. It is rich in biodiversity, but truly scientific information on it is lacking. In the present investigation, 14 stations adjacent to St. Martin’s Island within the Bay of Bengal were sampled for determining the composition, spatial distribution, species richness, and diversity of pelagic zooplankton. Samples were collected in the pre-monsoon hot season. From the community of zooplankton, 34 species were reported. Most of the species belonged to copepods. Besides, Polychaeta and Cirripedia were also present in the community. The most significant species belonged to Oithona, Canthocalanus, Balanus, Euterpina, and Microsetella. Total zooplankton standing crop varied from 45,000–125,000 ind/m3 and the highest number of species (8) were observed at station 7. Strong variability in the distribution of species was observed in the studied stations. The number of genera collected at each station varied from 4–8. Data on species richness (Df) varied from 1.30–3.04 and that of the Shannon-Wiener Index (H) from 1.33–1.93. The species composition of zooplankton and the species richness and the diversity index of the population was comparable to the other studies carried out in the Central and Western Bay of Bengal.

Seismic ambient noise (SAN) energy can potentially blur regional and teleseismic arrivals as well as various microearthquakes at specific frequencies. Therefore, quantification of the SAN energy level in a region is required to optimize seismic station distribution for seismological investigations. Moreover, evaluation of station performance and noise source is possible from observation of SAN energy levels. The SAN energy distribution from seismic stations in the Bengal Basin (BB), Bangladesh has not yet been estimated. At the same time, this tec-tonically active and complex region is less studied using seismic methods. This study aims to quantify SAN ener-gy and characterize its diurnal variation along with evaluating station performance at 11 seismic stations, which were temporarily installed in the deeper portion of the BB. Herein, the daily SAN energy level was determined within the period range of 0.02–30 s by estimating the power spectral density (PSD) of seismic data for 7 continu-ous days. SAN energy and its variation over time were observed using the probability density functions (PDFs) of PSDs and spectrograms, respectively. The sources of SAN energies at different period bands were also investigat-ed by comparing the PSDs with daily variations in human activities, nearby noise sources, local meteorological factors (i.e., air temperature and precipitation), and sea level height. The insights from this study could be useful for the future deployment of seismic networks as well as seismological studies in the BB.

Opis:
A batch system investigated the application of two types of chemically modified biosorbents derived from spent grated coconut (Cocos nucifera) powder to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The biosorbents were characterised by spectroscopic and quantitative analyses. The assessment of MB adsorption onto the investigated biosorbents was studied at different experimental conditions with different pHs (2–9) and different initial concentrations of MB (10–400 mg/L) at three different temperatures (298, 308, and 318 K). The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of xanthated spent grated coconut (XSGC) was higher than that of hexane-washed spent grated coconut (HSGC). The thermodynamic study indicated that the MB adsorption process was spontaneous for both biosorbents. Desorption of MB-loaded biosorbents was carried out using HCl, NaOH, and Na2EDTA solutions. A desorption ratio of more than 90% was obtained over three adsorption/desorption cycles for HSGC. However, XSGC demonstrated poor MB desorption, implying a stronger MB interaction with XSGC, which could be attributed to H-bonding, Yoshida H-bonding, n-π, and π-π bonding. The study showed that HSGC and XSGC could be applied as biosorbents to remove low MB concentrations from aqueous solutions.
