Opis:
The story of Krzyś (Chris), which the author reconstructed based on talks with a friend, shows the situation of the “class clown”, the boy suspected of having ADHD whom the doctors were unable to diagnose explicitly for some years. Like many such “Others”, Chris experienced rejection by some of his teachers, peers and their parents and by some members of his own family. Early in life he knew the bitterness of loneliness, lack of understanding, aggression, fear of school, humiliation and helplessness. The story of Chris and his school problems shows how the attitudes of various persons in a school who deal with a child perceived as “different” can vary. How much depends on the particular person, on his or her receptiveness, ability to notice the problems and eagerness to help. The story is also a starting point for reflection on the model of the pupil – teacher relationship in a large school system as well as its alternatives; and more generally – on the functioning of schools in a socjety dominated by a culture of humiliation, hostility and rejection.

Opis:
In the years 1922-1997 the author conducted field research, whose aim was to show the process of the forming of national and cultural identity among the Poles from Belorus and the profile of the changes that had undergone in the functioning of some local communities under political transformations. (The inhabitants of the village Naliboki constitute one of such communities). The method the author used consisted in analyzing the contents of the autobiographic reports and memories of the people representing the community under study. The paper depicts an image of "friends" (Poles-Catholics) and "others" − the closest neighbours to whom belonged the Orthodox believers, called Russkis, and Jews (some interlocutors rated them among the category of "friends"). A separate category is constituted of "strangers" (Soviets and Germans), the nations which came to Naliboki during the Second World War. The principal indicator of the particular communities and the basis for the autoidentification of the people under study was their religion. The kind of occupation and their language were less important. The (incomprehensible) language appears as an indicator of the "strangers." Moreover, they hold a negative attitude towards religion (atheism). The subjects valued cultures in their statements. The culture of the Russian (Orthodox) population was regarded as inferior to the culture of the Poles-Catholics. In like manner Soviet culture was deemed inferior to Polish and German cultures. The author has recreated the more important elements of a "little history" of Naliboki, as it was remembered, experienced and lived by its inhabitants. The breakthrough events here are the following: the Second World War and the post-war period when homeland was lost and political transformations took place. It follows from the author's research that the issue of national membership took on significance only during the war. At the same time, the collaboration of some of "friends" and "others" with "strangers" affected their image and worsened the hitherto relationships between particular groups. The paper has shown also the basic values the community under research shared. We list here: private property, close family and neighbourly ties and religion, penetrating all spheres of life. After the war the values had been replaced with antivalues (kolkhozes, atheization, loosening of social ties, and the fall of former authorities).

Opis:
On 30 IX 1880 Pope Leo XIII promulgated his encyclical Grande munus in which he recalled the history and the effects of missionary activity carried out among the Slavs in the second half of the ninth century by saints Cyril and Methodius. He also expressed his interest in the unification of the Slavic nations and the creation of a spiritual unity which would bring together Western and Eastern Christianity. On 2 VI 1985, Pope John Paul II, referring to Grande munus promulgated the encyclical Slavorum Apostoli. He deemed the Holy Brothers to be a role model for contemporary Christians, and forerunners of ecumenism, dialogue, enculturation and creation of community in a social environment full of conflicts and divisions. According to the Pope’s view, the continuity of the work done by Cyril and Methodius may save contemporary Europe from forgetting its Christian roots, from denying Christian values and the culture connected with Christianity. As John Paul II maintains, it is the Slavs, especially the Poles, who have a special role in saving Christian Europe. The author does not conceal that she is skeptical about the interest of contemporary Slavs in this evangelization mission seen as continuing the work of the Holy Brothers. She doubts that it can be effective. In view of deep divisions and conflicts among the modern Slavs, of their lack of unity, as well as of a general rejection of Christian values, which can be noticed among those nations as well, it is difficult to see the Slavs as an example of unity among nations and as a model for contemporary Europe. In this multicultural world, those who wish to follow in the footsteps of the Holy Brothers are a definite minority, which has neither the support of their own ethnic/national group nor that of other populations on our continent.

Opis:
Anna Kutrzeba-Pojnarowa i prof. dr hab.
The author avoids using the term master/Master, instead referring to the concept of a Teacher when describing the people who played a significant role in her life and who are the main protagonists of this article. These people are the Professors Anna Kutrzeba-Pojnarowa and Witold Dynowski, ethnologists, excellent lecturers and researchers; and also people full of passion, respect for the achievements of other scholars, fascinated with the history of the discipline they represent and the interrelation of “macro” and “micro” history. First and foremost, they are great PEOPLE. Reminiscing about encounters with them, the author presents the model relationship between a teacher and a pupil, close to her, which is not limited to passing knowledge. The relationship is based on kindness, openness to others, and motivating them to overcome their limitations, fears and difficulties. The skills of noticing the potential of others, encouraging them to develop, acceptance, keeping one’s spirits up, support and co-existence should also be mentioned. Another person who also played the role of Teacher, although she has never been designated as such by the author, is her Grandmother Janina Orzechowska. She was the one who shaped the author’s attitudes to life, her way of looking at other people, her passions and ways of being. She was the person whose selfless love expressed by her behavior, gestures and looks accompanied the author from an early age. The motif of the relationship is very explicit in the text. The author emphasizes that relationships are not always joyful and constructive. Sometimes they clip one’s wings, they hurt and take away the light. Relationships which are beautiful in the beginning can also change under the influence of an illness, of one person affecting the others. The author describes changes like that via the example of the relationship with someone who appears in the text as the anonymous Teacher. It was a person from whom the author received a bitter lesson in life, far from fairy tales with a happy end.

Opis:
For the author of the article the present conflict between Russia and Ukraine has become the point of departure for a re{ ection on its character and for posing many questions: Is the conflict perceived by those directly involved as an inter-Slavic conflict? Is it interpreted in such way by outsiders? How is the conflict interpreted by the supporters of the idea of pan-Slavism (numerous both in Russia and Ukraine) and by the community of Eastern Slavs? How does it affect the relations between Slavic nations? How is the Slavic identification of the participants of the conflict related to their ethnic and national identity? What is the influence of the concept of the „Russian world” (russkiy mir) on the Russian-speaking inhabitants of Ukraine? Are we really witnessing the final breakdown of the idea of a Slavic community? The author mentions the internal divisions of Ukrainian society. Another subject she raises is the variety of attitudes of Poles concerning the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Poles also have varied attitudes towards persons of Polish national identity and with Polish roots who arrived in Poland from Ukraine. Most of them have applied for Polish citizenship. Another part of the article is dedicated to the process of the formation of the Russian political nation. One of the questions here concerns the relations between particular identities: civic, ethnic/national and supra-national (Slavic). Referring to Andrew Wilson, author of the book the Ukrainians: Unexpected nation, the author of the article points out different scenarios concerning the future of Ukraine. The work by Wilson was published in 2000. It seems, however, that in spite of violent changes in Russian-Ukrainian relationships, each of the scenarios is equally possible.

A battle for the space in a multicultural city on the example of Vilnius

Opis:
A mythologised image of Wielkie Księstwo Litewskie and its capital - Vilnius - says about a co existence of the representatives of the ethnic, religious and cultural groups. The situation changed radically in the 19th century when the leaders of the Lithuanian national movement treated the opposi¬tion to everything that is Polish as a condition of the success of the national idea, the development of the Lithuanian culture and identity. The benefits deriving from the historical relations with Poland were negated. The Poles were accused of the conscious devastation of the Lithuanian culture and compulsory Polonization of Lithuanians. The next source of conflicts was the inclusion of Vilnius and Wileńszczyzna to the II Republic of Poland (the so called Vilnius excursion 1919-1920). In spite of the flow of time, the echoes of the battles of Vilnius have been still alive. As it was in the past, the questions that arise are Whose city it is? To whom does it belong? The cause of the conflicts is not only historical “past”, political issues, mutual accusations and sense of harm, but also the contemporary transformations of the city. The battle has been fought on the so-called resources, being at the same time a perfect example of the rivalry of the space in a physical and symbolic sense. The very battle also has an economic dimension. It is also interpreted in the ethnic categories (the opposition: poor Poles - rich Lithuanians: Poles as the victims of the Lithuanian policy). The changes taking place in the space of the city lead to a greater restriction and appropriation of the sacred sphere by the commercialization, business, noise and entertainment. The conflicts fought in the Vilnius space (and on this space) prove how difficult it is to realize the ideals of multi culturality, an intercultural dialogue, non conflict life at the cultural borderline. They also show the power of money and its contribution to a division of the space of the city and managing this space. It is also visible on the basis of the problems with the returning the ground in Vilnius and Wileńszczyzna to its lawful owners (Poles in the predominating part of the places), the realization of the project “Great Vilnius” and appropriation of the Polish cultural heritage and its Lithuanisation.
