    The paper challenges the common view within the history of Polish literature that schematically places women’s poetry outside modernism and avant-garde. The authoress employs the concept of neo-avant-garde to characterize the so-far omitted poetic projects by women, dismissed to date as marginal or “quasi-avant-garde”. In the article, she demonstrates ways in which Julia Fiedorczuk’s intellectual, self-reflexive and experimental poetry draws upon and refashions the avant-garde tradition.

    An important, though underestimated theme in Polish poetry written by women is the thread of poetry engaged in social and political matters, thematizing the connection between literature and civic life. Poetesses are often accused of not rooting their works in history and of unwillingness to bring up current topics. Yet the problem is not the lack of interest in history and its political and social dimension, but the distinct way of its conceptualization, the relationship between the individual – though not always revealing its sex – subjective “I” in relation to history and challenges of its times. That is manifested, among others, in poems by Wisława Szymborska, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Bogusława Latawiec and Urszula Kozioł, which, to a different degree, exhibit the strategies of personalization, autobiographication, somatization and trivialization, characteristic of women’s poetry regarding the martial law period in Poland.

    The article presents the late authorship of Miron Białoszewski, especially his poems collected in the book Odczepić się (1978) and a diary Chamowo (2009) that are a document of the poet’s life in the block of flats after his removal to the flat in a tower block at the Lizbońska Street in Warsaw in 1975. In these texts we may notice the new way of writing that was formed by new accommodation and living arrangement that influenced the poets’ life. On the other hand the room on the ninth floor occurs the place that was marked with sacrum and it puts an impact on the poets’ metaphysical and supernatural experience. The flat in the tower block has also influenced the author’s perspective and the way of writing, so that Białoszewski has experienced terminal situation – being between the two forms of living, balancing between the earth and heaven, profanum and sacrum. The removal starts to resemble a ferry across Styx, and the ninth floor becomes an unwanted porch of eternity. The titled word odczepianie się (disconnecting, separating) from the past and being at the top of the tower block means the new beginning for the poet, and writing becomes an imitation of the God’s act of creation that helps Białoszewski to accommodate in the world after heart attack and removal.

    The article addresses the problem of absence of women’s poetry in the linguistic current of 20th-century Polish poetry. It analyses its causes, amongst which the pivotal role is played by the stereotypical vision of women’s poetry, deeply ingrained in general awareness. The vision in question does not admit “difficult” forms and thus places women’s poetic work outside the avant-garde tendencies, linguistic experiment and metareflection. The authoress calls for inclusion of the omitted or forgotten poetesses who play with language in their poems and she articulates the need to redefine our understanding of linguistic poetry.

    Artykuł omawia miejsce i zadania poetyki w uniwersyteckim kształceniu polonistycznym, która wprowadza studentów w podstawy teorii literatury oraz przygotowuje do praktykowania sztuki interpretacji. Szczególną uwagę autorka poświęca roli wersyfikacji w edukacji filologicznej, podkreślając jej strukturalistyczne tradycje oraz dążenie do semantyzacji i antropologizacji wersologicznych chwytów. Dzięki badaniom form wierszowych możliwe jest pożądane zbliżenie teorii do literatury, które pociąga za sobą sfunkcjonalizowanie wyborów wersyfikacyjnych w konkretnym, historycznie i społecznie określonym kontekście, tym samym włączając wersologię w przestrzeń współczesnej refleksji humanistycznej. Konieczne jest także dowartościowanie tej problematyki w kształceniu akademickim i jej dywersyfikacja poprzez przywoływanie również na przedmiotach historycznoliterackich.
    The article discusses poetics’ significant place and role in the university literary didactics – it is a subject which introduces students into rudiments of literary theory and prepares them to practice the art of interpretation. The author focuses on the role of versification in philological education and underlines its structuralist tradition and tendency towards semantization and antropologization versificational devices. Researching verse enables desirable closeness of literature and theory which results in functionalizing versificational choices in concrete, historically and socially definite context – in this aspect versification becomes an object of modern humanistic thought. The author proclaims the necessity of enhancing the status of this problematics in academic training as well as its diversification through discussing versology also within historic-literary curricula.

    The article presents and interpretation of a Stanisław Barańczak’s poem Łono przyrody [The Bosom of Nature], seldom discussed by specialists. This seemingly simple poem from the volume Ja wiem, że to niesłuszne [I Know It’s Not Right] (1977) elaborates on the common idiomatic phrase ‘the bosom of nature’ and proves to be a masterful and intricate artistic declaration of existential and political disobedience. The “I” of Barańczak’s poem is something of a lapsus of Nature and History, standing in opposition to the mindless existence and enslavement of the communist state. In this sense he is very similar to the subject of Wisława Szymborska’s verse. Her poetic oeuvre, translated and discussed on numerous occasions by Barańczak himself, is indeed an important interpretive context here. The article points to the relationships between specific texts by both poets and depicts similarities and differences between their poetic outlooks.

    Bogusława Latawiec jest autorką krótkich form prozatorskich na pograniczu eseju, które ujawniają stosunek poetki do sztuki słowa i opowiadają jednocześnie osobistą historię kobiety piszącej. Utwory te stanowią próbę dialogicznego określenia „ja” w konfrontacji z tekstami kultury, zyskują wartość autoprezentacyjną i prowadzą do wypracowania własnego projektu poetyckiego. Latawiec sięga po formę eseistycznej próby, wykorzystując jej cząstkowość, dyskursywność, intelektualizm i autobiograficzność, co pozwala jej poprzez metakrytyczną refleksję rozpoznawać i konstruować własną tożsamość.
    Bogusława Latawiec is the author of – among others – short prose verging on essay. These works reveal her attitude towards the art of words and at the same time they tell the private history of the woman writer. It is a dialogic attempt to define herself in confrontation with the texts of culture. Short prose by Latawiec has the potential of self-presentation and leads to working out of an individual poetic project. Bogusława Latawiec values this literary form for its fragmentarity, discursiveness, intellectuality and autobiographicalness; paired with metacritical reflexion it allows her to recognize and to construct her own identity.

    Artykuł przedstawia w dużym skrócie historię rozumienia pojęcia ‘autotematyzm’, zaproponowanego w połowie ubiegłego wieku przez Artura Sandauera i znacząco ewoluującego w refleksji badawczej w następnych dziesięcioleciach. Problemy definicyjne z autotematyzmem związane były zarówno z jego płynnością terminologiczną, jak i zakresem występowania tego zjawiska, uzależnionego od wpływu zmieniającej się literatury oraz języków jej opisu. Autorka proponuje ujmować rozwój autotematyzmu jako konsekwencję zwrotu lingwistycznego, sytuując go w centrum modernizmu, którego dominanty uwyraźnia, stając się operatywnym narzędziem interpretacji nowoczesności. Jednocześnie zwraca uwagę na wątek uprzywilejowujący podmiotowość w myśleniu o autotematyzmie oraz ścisłe jego powiązanie z autobiografizmem, widoczne w szczególny sposób po przełomie poststrukturalistycznym.
    The article presents a short history of the development of the concept of autotematyzm, a term proposed in the mid twentieth century by Artur Sandauer, referring to a kind of self-referentiality, that evolved considerably in scholarly thought in subsequent decades.  Problems in defining the term relate to both its terminological fluidity and the scope of its use, dependent on the influence of literature as it changed and the languages used to describe and analyze it.  The author proposes to formulate the development of the term as a result of the linguistic turn and thus situates it at the center of modernism, whose dominants it expresses, becoming an operative tool for the interpretation of modernity. At the same time, she directs readers’ attention to the current that privileges subjectivity in the reflection on self-referentiality, and its close connection with autobiography, particularly visible after the post-structuralist rupture.

Bliskie czytanie tekstu, zwłaszcza w jego wymiarze wersyfikacyjno-kompozycyjnym oraz symbolicznym, demaskuje psychologiczny czwarty wymiar architektury modernistycznej, zaś analiza psychosomatycznej i percepcyjnej sytuacji podmiotu umożliwia odpowiedź na tytułowe pytanie wiersza, które wykracza poza społeczno-polityczną prawdę konkretu, stając się pytaniem tożsamościowym, egzystencjalnym i metafizycznym.
    The article is an interpretation of the poem by Stanisław Barańczak, "Where Did I Wake Up" from the "Morning Diary" volume, based on the author's poetry and the research reflection on this subject. A close reading of the text, especially in its versification-compositional and symbolic dimensions, exposes the psychological fourth dimension of modernist architecture, while the analysis of the psychosomatic and perceptual situation of the subject enables the answer to the eponymous question of the poem, which goes beyond the socio-political truth of the concrete, becoming an identity and existential question, and metaphysical.

    The article discusses different variants of metareflection in Julia Hartwig’s poetry, situating them against the background of a comprehensive concept of the poet’s work. The analysis of her poem Reprymenda [Reprimand] gives rise to a proposal of authotematism specific to Hartwig’s poetry, here called ‘out of the blue’ autothematism and contrasted with the concept of avant-garde poetry. This metapoetic formula is then extended to other texts in the volume Jasne niejasne [Bright Unclear], in which the mimetic aspect of literature in particular is problematised and the ethical dimension of Hartwig’s oeuvre is highlighted.

    The author presents a precise analysis of the poem Przeczucia eschatologiczne Pana Cogito, placing this work in the context of Herbert's other poems „for the passing away”. The clash of the wealth of life with the depersonalising emptiness of the next world after death is in fact – as is revealed by the author – a conflict of languages that is inherent in the structure of the poem: of the colloquial private Polish and the impersonal office style. The hypothetical and private image of the next world proves to be an element of a peculiar „struggle” for an individual dimension of existence going on in Herbert's poetry; it is another – especially significant – act of opposition to the „systems” putting abstract ideas above man.

    The article addresses the sources behind the poems of Wisława Szymborska and Czesław Miłosz. The focal point of Miłosz’s poetry is the concept of Entirety, which is intertwined with his religious worldview, whereas the world in Szymborska’s poetry lacks a metaphysical structure based on a number of divine certainties. These fundamental differences are observed in the metrical decisions made as the shape of the poem becomes a test for the infinite, remaining outside reality. For both authors “the order, rhythm, form” seem to be the reasons for the existence of poetry and as such protect it from chaos and nothingness. However, Szymborska “thinks in verse” differently from Miłosz, undertaking her own “struggle with a poem.” This aspect of her work is analyzed in the article with reference to “I’m working on the world” and “Vermeer.”

    Julia Fiedorczuk’s academic, journalistic and critical activity invites readings of her poetry in the context of ecopoetics, which she actively promotes. Her ecocritically oriented poems explore the links between poetry and natural environment, proposing an interdisciplinary practice of cocreation of the human and non-human world, as well as a re-evaluation of our understanding of the relations between them. It is, at the same time, a type of poetry that exposes its gender affiliation; it evokes and deconstructs the culturally instilled associations between femininity and nature, and formulates questions pertaining to identity and metaphysics. With her “woman and world: user’s manuals” project, poetically original yet deeply rooted in (post)modern contexts, Fiedorczuk represents one of the most interesting currents of contemporary – and not just women’s – poetry.

    The paper investigates manners of linguistic description of psychosomatic, autobiographically interpreted experience in contemporary women’s poetry, which is analyzed in the context of the poetics of the moment, with reference to Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s concept of “poetry as a mode of attention.” The authoress is particularly interested in the figure of paronomasia, evoking homonymic, parallel spheres: the material and the transcendental one. The article contains close reading interpretations of poems by, among others, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Teresa Ferenc, Bogusława Latawiec and Ludmiła Marjańska, in which paronomasia introduces the reader into a dual dimension of existence, both anchoring the subject in the physical, bodily reality and provoking metaphysical questions.

    W artykule wyodrębniony zostaje opis autotematyczny jako technika metapoetyckiej refleksji, z jednej strony odniesiona do strukturalistycznej teorii opisu, z drugiej – do praktyki poetyckiej kobiet, w której metarefleksja jest ważnym, ale niedostatecznie omówionym zjawiskiem. Stosowane przez poetki zabiegi autotematyczne nakierowane są często nie tyle na problematyzowanie poetyckiego medium, mającego wywołać Barthes’owski „efekt rzeczywistości”, ile na samopoznanie podmiotu i konstruowanie indywidualnych projektów epistemologicznych. Przykładowo przywołana zostaje poezja Wisławy Szymborskiej, Julii Hartwig, Bogumiły Latawiec i Haliny Poświatowskiej, a osobną interpretację zyskuje wiersz Joanny Pollakówny.
    The article discusses autothematic description as a technique of metapoetic reflection. On the one hand, it is analyzed in the context of the structuralist theory of description and on the other hand, in the context of poetry by women, where meta-reflection is an important but underresearched phenomenon. Many poets use autothematic writing not because they want to problematize the poetic medium, which is to create Barthes’s “reality effect,” but because they want to construct their individual epistemological projects and inform the speaking “I.” I analyze poems by Wisława Szymborska, Julia Hartwig, Bogumiła Latawiec and Halina Poświatowska and interpret a poem by Joanna Pollakówna anew.

    The author presents the ways in which “Peiperism”, i.e. a model of thinking about the avant-garde as exemplified by the reception of Tadeusz Peiper’s works, is disintegrating today. Research on avant-garde poetry which privileged a theoretical perspective resulted in the distorted reception of texts, thus building a doctrinal model of the first avant-garde that marginalized or objectified literary works. However, the restoration of the superior role of poetry which was absorbed and dominated by the structural concept of poetic language compels readers to “leave the beaten track” and try to read Peiper’s works in a different way. At the same time, established opinions on the intellectual and nonphysical as well as fully expressible and complex model of the Cracow avantgarde are redefined. A closer look at the texts reveals interpretational differences and shows that avant-garde authors’ utopian projects are not necessarily congruent with their output.

    Przedmiotem interpretacji jest Znikopis Urszuli Kozioł, niewielki utwór z tomu Wielka pauza (1996), czytany na tle wiersza Ars poetica i późnej twórczości Urszuli Kozioł. Staje się on formą arspoetyki jednorazowego użytku, pozbawionej swej uniwersalnej i normatywnej roli i ograniczonej swym zasięgiem do danego, właśnie powstającego tekstu, który zyskuje specyficzną, cielesną materialność. „Znikopisanie” zostaje tu sprzężone z efektem biologicznym, jest konsekwencją „ciałoznikania”, nakierowując uwagę na problem psychosomatycznie rozumianej tożsamości rozpraszającego się „ja”, wyrażanej równolegle przez medium ciała i języka.
    The subject of interpretation in this article is Urszula Kozioł’s “Znikopis” (Etch-A-Sketch), a short work from her book Wielka pauza (The Great Pause, 1996), read in the context of the poem “Ars poetica” and Kozioł’s later work. It becomes a form of single-use ars poetica, stripped of its universal and normative role and limited in its range to a particular, newly arising text which acquires a specific, corporeal materiality. The process of “etch-a-sketch” drawing here becomes linked to a biological effect, it is a consequence of “etching the body,” directing attention to the problem of the psychosomatically understood identity of the vanishing self, expressed on parallel tracks by the media of body and language.

    Ironical spirit of versificationThe article is an overview of Paul Bukowiec’s book titled Metronome. About the individuality of “too rhythmic” poetry (Jagiellonian University, Cracow 2015), which on the one hand is the literary theoretical versological manifesto, and on the other hand – the original proposal how to read three texts: Comments on death inevitable and common to all expressed in poems by Jozef Baka (1766), Ball in Opera by Julian Tuwim (1946) and Nothing twice by Wislawa Szymborska (1957). An original concept to transfer into the field of versification the category of individuality poetry by Derek Attridge, becomes here a contribution to the critical reflection on the history and condition of contemporary Polish theory of verse, which is entering the culturally oriented post-structural stage, as well as on the potential poetological practice centred around interpretation of the specific poetical cases.

    Wiersze Wisławy Szymborskiej cechuje narracyjny sposób widzenia świata zderzony z poetycką formą. Opowiadanie wiąże się tu bowiem z odkrywaniem i rozumieniem rzeczywistości oraz kształtowaniem własnej tożsamości. Artykuł pokazuje rodzaje i ewolucję technik narracyjnych Szymborskiej, podkreślając ich poznawczy i etyczny wymiar. Jej poezja jest tu rozumiana jako indywidualna renarracja wielkiej opowieści życia, która niczego nie wyjaśnia i nie porządkuje, jest jednak konieczna, by podmiot mógł istnieć świadomie. Gest narracyjny poetki stanowi zarazem gest autorefleksyjny i ma wymiar metafizyczny, stając się wyrazem sprzeciwu wobec nicości.
    The narrative way of seeing the world confronted with the poetic form is characteristic of Wisława Szymborska’s poems. A short story is not only linked with discovering and understanding the reality but also with creating the individual identity. The article presents the variety of types and the evolution of Szymborska’s narrative techniques emphasizing their cognitive and ethical sphere. Her poetry is understood as the individual re-narration of the great story of life, which neither explains nor organises anything, yet is necessary for the lyrical subject to exist consciously. The poet’s auto-reflective narrative gesture adds to the metaphysical dimension and as such simultaneously becomes the expression of opposition to nothingness.

    The term „ars poetica” can refer both to a relatively new (sub)genre of poetry and to the classical Latin works (often) bearing the title ars poetica. The article proposes to use it to cover three areas of literary and metaliterary work: 1) classical normative-descriptive poetics; 2) self-reflexive poems devoted to the art of poetry; 3) guides to creative writing and essays on secrets of the writer’s craft.
