    Humour in German media coverage of Poland and Poles Media play a significant role in perceiving the world and construing our conception of reality, due to the fact that the samples of social discourses exposed in them have a strong influence on the shaping of the image of the nation, opinions, attitudes, and a hierarchy of values. The present article discusses humorous content in German press, television, and internet coverage of recent years, which has reinforced the negative image of Poland and Poles in Germans’ consciousness. In the introductory part, the attention is focused on presenting the essence and functions of humour in the light of contemporary humour research, with a special emphasis placed upon interdependencies between humour, language, and discourse on the one hand, and ethnic cultures on the other, which differ in terms of preferred norms and values.

    The article presents the impact of emotions on teaching children foreign languages. To this end, the results of a research project carried out under the auspices of the Institute of German Philology at the University of Silesia in Katowice are discussed. The project consisted in providing language courses at three kindergartens and one primary school. During those courses, German was taught as a foreign language using the storytelling approach. The project results led to the conclusion that, unlike traditional teaching methods, which are based on very limited input and intensive imitation, the teaching method used creates much more favourable conditions for the activation of innate language acquiring processes and takes the level of the children’s cognitive development into account to a larger degree. The objectives of the evaluation were – among other things – to determine how the storytelling approach affects children’s attitudes to a foreign language, whether it arouses their internal motivation for acquiring a foreign language, whether it contributes to building their confidence, and whether it stimulates their imagination and creativity.

    Sprache ist ein Werkzeug, das neben der Informationsfunktion auch ein Träger von Emotionen und Werten ist. Dabei ist das Bewerten ein inhärentes Element des politischen Diskurses. In fast jeder Kommunikation erklären Politiker eigene Werte mit entsprechender Wertehierarchie, bewerten ihre Gegner und die sozial-politische Situation, geben Urteile ab und veranlassen die Empfänger dazu, diese zu akzeptieren. Den Gegenstand der Analyse in diesem Beitrag bilden Äußerungen ausgewählter Politiker der polnischen Regierungspartei Recht und Gerechtigkeit, die durch einen radikalen Wortschatz klare und emotionale Botschaften konstruierten, wodurch sie in der öffentlichen Meinung eine breitere Resonanz finden konnten. Die Analyse der Politikeräußerungen und der von ihnen verwendeten sprachlichen Mittel ermöglicht es, die aktuelle politische Kultur zu beschreiben sowie die Handlungsmotive, Argumentationsstrategien der Regierungspartei und die von ihr stigmatisierten Merkmale der Oppositionspolitiker zu entdecken.
    Language is a tool which – apart from its informative function – also conveys emotions and values. Political discourse abounds in axiological declarations. In almost any message, politicians announce what values they hold, evaluate their opponents and the socio-economic situation, make judgements, present a certain hierarchy of values and try to convince their listeners to accept it. In the paper, the author analyses the statements of several politicians from the Law and Justice party. The statements contained clear and distinct messages due to the use of drastic vocabulary, which was to guarantee their resonance among the general public. The analysis of the politicians’ statements and of the linguistic means employed by them allows us to find out what the current political culture is and to discover the ruling party’s reasons for action, its argumentation methods as well as what traits of opposition politicians are reviled by it.

    Fake news is false, manipulative information that spreads rapidly on the Internet, especially on social networking sites. It mainly deals with controversial topics, such as escape or migration. It is because of such false information treated by its recipients as true that refugees are suspected of, among other things, violence, thefts or obtaining additional benefits from the receiving community. The article discusses selected fake news about refugees in order to show how easy it is to be manipulated on the Internet. The main aim of fake news is to arouse negative emotions in recipients and to incite them to feel hatred and to be violent towards refugees.

    Opis:
    Intercultural education is one of the most important goals of contemporary foreign language teaching. In order to keep pupils strongly motivated to learn foreign languages, they must be made to understand what benefits can be gained from a good command of foreign languages. It is due to international pupil exchanges that young people have the opportunity to come into direct contact with a foreign language, to experience foreign culture in real communicative situations, and in the process verify or overcome deeply rooted stereotypes and prejudices about certain nations. In the article, the author presents quantitative questionnaire results, which allows him to identify the heterostereotypes of Polish and German pupils as well as their attitude towards historical events and current bilateral relations. Additionally, the impact of pupil exchanges on how representatives of both nations see each other and on their further contacts has been discussed. The results obtained can serve not only as guidelines on how to work with stereotypes and prejudices in foreign language classes, but they might also help in effective preparation for the scheduled pupil exchange.

    The author of the article analyzes Polish obituary notices published in „Gazeta Wyborcza” (the nationwide newspaper published daily). In the beginning the characteristic features and types of this genre has been discussed. The author attempts to explain also how valuation is understood in linguistic context and through which means it is realized. He has fully ana-lyzed selected obituary notices regarding them from linguistic and axiological perspective. His aim has been to show what was being valuated in obituary notices and how it was mani-fested in different elements of such texts (initial formula, identification and characteristics of a person who died, the ending of the obituary notice).

    Den Gegenstand der Ausführungen im vorliegenden Beitrag bildet militärische Fachsprache, die über konkrete Begriffe verfügt und zur Entwicklung einer bestimmten Terminologie beigetragen hat. Diese Fachsprache ist sehr bedeutsam, denn sie unterstützt die Verständigung unter den Mitgliedern der Armee eines Landes und zwischen den Armeen der Welt. Außerdem gibt uns die Sprache der Soldaten bzw. Der Wehrpflichtigen einen tieferen Einblick in die Lebensweise des Militärs, weil Sprache und Gesellschaft eng zusammenhängen. Mit diesem Beitrag wird ein Versuch unternommen, eine Lücke im Bereich der Studien zur militärischen Fachsprache zu schließen. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die Frage, wie militärische Fachsprache in der Textsorte ‚Tagebuch‘, der unmittelbarsten Form der autobiografischen Aufzeichnung, aufgearbeitet wird. Im theoretischen Teil wird zuerst militärische Fachsprache näher definiert. Dann werden ihre grundlegenden lexikalisch-semantischen und morphologisch-syntaktischen Eigenschaften behandelt. Als Untersuchungskorpus dient das literarische Kriegstagebuch „Schreib das auf, Kisch!“ des österreichischen und später tschechoslowakischen Schriftstellers und Journalisten Egon Erwin Kisch, der den Kriegsalltag schildert, den er als Soldat in den Jahren 1914–1915 erlebte. Die Analyse der authentischen Aufzeichnungen eines Soldaten lässt die Kriegserfahrungswelt untersuchen, die in der Form eines Tagebuchs dokumentiert ist und den militärischen Sprachgebrauch der jeweiligen Zeit in unterschiedlicher Intensität reflektiert. Im analytischen Teil wird einerseits auf den militärsprachlichen Fachwortschatz eingegangen, der ein breites Spektrum an Bereichen umfasst, die militär-organisatorische, operativ-taktische, technische und andere Inhalte betreffen und die das Wesen des Militärs besonders kennzeichnen. Andererseits werden auch bildhafte Wortprägungen und Redensarten untersucht, die dem Soldatenjargon zuzuordnen sind, die durch einen spezifisch soldatischen Humor geprägt sind. Die durchgeführte Analyse lässt unterschiedliche Verwendungsweisen militärischer Fachsprache in Kischs Tagebuch erkennen, die von einer nüchternen und objektiven über die oft stark emotionsgeladene bis zur humorvollen, bisweilen ironischen reichen.
    The subject of this article is specialised military language, which comprises specific terms and has contributed to the development of a certain terminology. This specialised language is particularly relevant, since it supports communication between the members of a country’s army and between the armies of the world. Additionally, the language of soldiers and conscripts gives us a deeper insight into the way of life of the military, because language and society are closely linked. This article is an attempt to fill a gap in the field of studies on specialised military language. At its centre is the question of how military terminology is processed in the text type diary, the most direct form of autobiographical recording. First, in the theoretical part, military terminology is defined in more detail. Then its basic lexical-semantic and morphological-syntactic characteristics are discussed. The literary war diary “Schreib das auf, Kisch!” by the Austrian and later Czechoslovakian writer and journalist Egon Erwin Kisch, which describes the everyday life of a soldier in the years 1914–1915, serves as the corpus of the study. The analysis of the authentic diary entries of a soldier allows the study of war experience documented in the form of a diary and reflects the military use of language of the time to varying degrees of intensity. On the one hand, the analytical part deals with the specialist military vocabulary, which covers a broad spectrum of areas relating to military-organisational, operational-tactical, technical and other content and which particularly characterise the nature of the military. On the other hand, figurative word coinages and idioms that can be assigned to soldier jargon and are characterised by a specifically soldierly humour are also examined. The analysis reveals different uses of military jargon in Kisch’s diary, ranging from the sober and objective to the often highly emotional to the humorous and sometimes ironic.

    Opis:
    Im Rahmen eines an der Schlesischen Universität durchgeführten Experiments wurden rund 100 Kindern in drei Kindergärten und in einer Grundschule Sprachkurse angeboten, in denen Deutsch als Fremdsprache nach den Prinzipien des narrativen Ansatzes gelehrt wurde. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden die eingesetzte Unterrichtsform präsentiert sowie die detaillierten Testergebnisse diskutiert. Interessant ist hier der erzielte Dauereffekt dieser Lehrweise. Anschließend wird der Einfluss des narrativen Lehransatzes auf die beobachtete Haltung der Kinder gegenüber der gelernten Fremdsprache und der Zielkultur beschrieben.
    The study was conducted at the University of Silesia within the group of approximately 100 children from three kindergartens and one primary school where storytelling was applied to teach German. The following paper focuses on the analysis of the applied storytelling technique and gives a detailed description of the results. Of particular importance in the case of the following, study is the long -lasting effectiveness of the adopted teaching technique. The article describes how this particular teaching technique has influenced the children’s attitudes towards the target language and culture.
    Nauczanie języków obcych metodą narracyjną w wieku przedszkolnym i szkolnym z perspektywy edukacji interkulturowej W ramach eksperymentu przeprowadzonego na Uniwersytecie Śląskim około 100 dzieci z trzech przedszkoli i jednej szkoły podstawowej objęto nauczaniem języka niemieckiego metodą narracyjną. W artykule zaprezentowano narracyjną formę nauczania (story telling approach), jak również szczegółowo omówiono wyniki testów. Na uwagę zasługuje przede wszystkim długotrwałość efektów przyjętego sposobu nauczania. Ponadto opisano wpływ podejścia narracyjnego na postawę dzieci wobec nauczanego języka obcego oraz kultury docelowej.
