At the beginning of 2018, Liberty Media, the owner of Formula One (hereafter, F1), decided to drop so-called grid girls from the race weekends beginning with the 2018 season, which has created an opportunity to analyze the perception of hostesses’ status and their bodies in contemporary sport. The discourse on the decision and the partial concessions in its enforcement is analyzed within the theoretical framework related to second and third waves of the feminist movement and the concepts of sexual objectification and agency. The results reveal that the grid girls’ presence is perceived both as unsuitable for modern times, values and #metoo culture climate and as “normal” and a “good tradition.” Additionally, the grid girls themselves accuse feminists of having caused them to lose their jobs, arguing that, although their positions are based on physical attractiveness and a sexualized body, it has been done by them voluntarily and with pleasure. The discourse on gird girls in F1 fits into the critical discourses on female (sexualized) body images in sport, but, on the other hand, it includes persons who have usually not been taken into account because of their auxiliary role in sports events.

Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy i na ile autoetnografia może zostać potraktowana jako rodzaj literatury intymistycznej. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza z nich przedstawia autoetnografię, łączącą w sobie elementy autobiografii i etnografii, jako zyskującą na popularności praktykę badawczą. Druga część opisuje, w jaki sposób autoetnografia wykorzystywana jest w badaniach dotyczących uprawiania sportu i ucieleśnionych doświadczeń. Trzecia część natomiast prezentuje wybrane fragmenty osobistych narracji ukazujących intymistyczny charakter autoetnografii. Przeprowadzony przegląd literatury prowadzi do konkluzji, że choć autoetnografia różni się od form autobiograficznych, podobnie jak one zabiera czytelnika w prywatny czy intymny świat autora-badacza.
The aim of the article is to answer the question whether and, if so, to what extent autoethnography can be treated as a type of intimate literature. The article consists of three parts. The first part presents autoethnography, which combines the elements of autobiography and ethnography, as a gaining popularity research practice. The second part describes the use of autoethnography in sports and embodied experiences studies, while the third part presents the selected fragments of the personal narratives which reveal intimate nature of autoethnography. The overlook of literature leads to the conclusion that although autoethnography differs from autobiographical forms, similarly to them it situates the reader within the author/researcher’s private or even intimate world.

Two debates concerning the amount of financial awards in sport are a starting point for the presented paper. One of them concerns the Solidarity marathon of 2010, and the other the decision of equalizing the prize money during Roland Garros and Wimbledon tennis competitions in 2007. Based on both debates, I amtrying to answer two questions: (i) what is the prize money a reward for or, more generally, what are the rules of rewarding in sports and (ii) whether the rules of rewarding are just and fair from the point of view of the equality of the genders. I am also considering how these rules fit to the discourse of the sexual difference sanctioned, in the case of sport, by the differences of biological nature. In the paper I refer to both, i.e., the phenomena shaping contemporary sport (commercialisation and medialisation), and the theoretical conceptions (such as Rawls’ theory of justice), or the already classical article by Jane English ‘Equity Sex in Sports’ published in 1978.
Punktem wyjścia prezentowanego artykułu są dwie debaty dotyczące wysokości nagród finansowych w sporcie. Pierwsza z nich dotyczy maratonu Solidarności z 2010 r., a druga decyzji o wyrównaniu nagród finansowych podczas turniejów tenisowych Roland Garros i Wimbledon w 2007 r. Wykorzystując argumenty pojawiające się w obydwu debatach, staram się odpowiedzieć na dwa pytania: 1) za co przyznawane są nagrody finansowe czy – mówiąc ogólniej – według jakich zasad wynagradzane są osiągnięcia sportowe oraz 2) czy obowiązujące w sporcie zasady wynagradzania są sprawiedliwe z punktu widzenia równości płci. Rozważam również, jak zasady te wpisują się w dyskurs różnicy płciowej legitymizowany, w przypadku sportu, poprzez różnice natury biologicznej. W artykule odwołuję się zarówno do takich zjawisk kształtujących współczesny sport, jak podporządkowanie zasadom rynkowym i medialnych, jak i do koncepcji teoretycznych (na przykład teorii sprawiedliwości Rawlsa) czy klasycznego już artykułu Jane English Sex Equity in Sports z 1978 r.

The aim of this article is to look at the analyses of the body/corporeality carried out by Polish sociologists and at the currently pursued studies in the area. The article presents the dilemmas that the researcher of the body/corporeality faces, mainly due to the nature of the research object, but also resulting from associated methodological difficulties. Secondly, the paper also points at some important empirical omissions – that is, areas or methods of research that have not, so far, gained enough attention of the researchers. Thirdly, a list of recommendations for possible, potentially attractive new fields of exploration for the sociology of the body is presented.

Artykuł przedstawia, w jaki sposób postrzeganie nie/normatywnego ciała zmienia się, kiedy płeć krzyżuje się z kategorią narodowości i (braku) sukcesu. Podjęta jest dyskusja, w jaki sposób te dwa czynniki, narodowość i sukces, wpływają na: (1) wybory sportowej publiczności, (2) postrzeganie wyglądu zawodniczek, (3) postrzeganie sportu jako „kobiecego” versus „męskiego”. Artykuł opiera się na koncepcji intersekcjonalności i odwołuje do badań własnych zrealizowanych w latach 2012 i 2013 oraz analizy dyskursu wybranych przypadków.
The article presents how the perception of non-normative corporeality changes when gender intersects with the category of nationality and (the lack of) success. It discusses how both of these factors, nationality and success, affect: (1) the choices made by the audience of sports events, (2) the perception of the appearance of individual athletes, and (3) the perception of sport as feminine versus masculine. The article is based on the intersectionality concept and refers to the author’s own research conducted in 2012 and 2013, as well as to the discourse analysis of the selected cases studies.

Wychodząc od poprawności politycznej będącej główną ramą dla tego, co można, a czego nie można powiedzieć, w dalszej części ukazane zosta- ły narzędzia służące reprodukowaniu dominacji białego zachodniego świata. Wyróżnionych i opisanych zostało pięć kodów używanych w sportowych transmisjach: (1) naturalny talent vs. ciężka praca, (2) bestia, (3) egzotyka, (4) liczy się udział i (5) nadzieja białych, z których każdy zilustrowany został przykładami. Celem artykułu jest między innymi zwrócenie uwagi na rolę dyskursu sportowego w reprodukowaniu kulturowej hegemonii.
The article presents critical analysis of sports media discourse from the racial perspective. Starting with political correctness – the main frame for what can and what cannot be said – the tools for reproducing the dominance of the white western world are indicated. Fives language codes used in sports coverage are described: (1) natural talent vs. hard work, (2) beast (3) exotics, (4) it is participation that counts and (5) white hope. Each of the codes is illustrated by examples. The article aims, among others, at drawing attention to the role of sports discourse in reproducing cultural hegemony.

The aim of this paper is to present the main discourses controlling a pregnant body – biomedical and aesthetic and their internalisation. The first is related to the medicalization of the body during pregnancy and focuses on its surveillance from a perspective of a child’s health and life.The second, which is described in this paper, concerns the image of female body and the patterns of femininity. The article is based on the in-depth interviews conducted with the pregnant women from 28 to 40 years old. The results of the author’s own study, as well as, the secondary data, reveal that the time of pregnancy does not liberate women from a pressure to embody the ideals of femininity, imposed by other women, physicians and media. Moreover, the pregnant body is treated as temporary form of embodiment and due to the practices undertaken by nine months, a body should return back to its “normal” form.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie głównych dyskursów kontrolujących ciężarne ciało – biomedycznego i estetycznego − oraz ich internalizacji. Pierwszy z nich powiązany jest z medykalizacją ciała podczas ciąży i skupia się na jego nadzorowaniu z perspektywy zdrowia i życia dziecka. Drugi, na którym koncentruje się autorka artykułu, dotyczy wizerunku i odnosi się do wzorców kobiecości. Artykuł opiera się na wywiadach pogłębionych, przeprowadzonych z ciężarnymi kobietami w wieku 28–40 lat. Wyniki badań własnych, poparte literaturą przedmiotu, wskazują, że czas ciąży nie uwalnia kobiet od presji ucieleśnienia ideałów kobiecości, wywieranej przez inne kobiety, lekarzy i media, a sam czas ciąży traktowany jest jako tymczasowa forma ucieleśnienia, po której ciało, dzięki podejmowanym przez dziewięć miesięcy praktykom, powinno wrócić do „normy”.

W artykule podjęta zostaje problematyka marginalizowana w polskiej socjologii, jaką jest wiedza pozadyskursywna i jej transmisja. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, że oprócz wiedzy, która ma charakter dyskursywny, istnieje również wiedza pozadyskursywna. Ma ona uniwersalny charakter, gdyż jest wykorzystywana na co dzień przez każdego z nas. Ale rzadko staje się ona przedmiotem analiz. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od wskazania przyczyn tej marginalizacji, by następnie uznać sport za obszar adekwatny do badania transmisji pozadyskursywnej wiedzy. Równocześnie podkreślona zostaje przydatność analiz na tym polu dla całej socjologii, bowiem ich celem jest między innymi odpowiedź na pytanie, jakie są granice naszego poznania i jak badać wiedzę pozadyskursywną. Kolejna część artykułu przedstawia koncepcje przyporządkowane dwóm nurtom – skupionym wokół pojęć wiedzy ucieleśnionej i wiedzy praktycznej, które mogą stać się teoretyczną podstawą badań empirycznych. Ostatnia część proponuje metody i techniki badawcze, które, jak się wydaje, są w największym stopniu pomocne w badaniach przekazywania i nabywania pozadyskursywnej wiedzy.
The article is focused the issue of non-discursive knowledge and its transmission, which is marginalized in Polish sociology. A starting point is the assumption that beyond discursive knowledge, there is also non-discursive knowledge that is universal, because it is used every day by everybody. Paradoxically however, it rarely becomes a subject of analysis. The article begins with enumerating the reasons for this exclusion and suggests that a field of sport is an appropriate area for the research on non-discursive knowledge transmission. At the same time the article emphasizes the usefulness of the analysis in this field for the entire sociology due to its potential of providing the answers to the questions such as what are the limits of our knowledge concepts or how to study non-discursive knowledge. The second part of the article presents the notions of (1) embodied knowledge and (2) know-how, which are assigned to the two currents of analysis. It is suggested they can become the theoretical basis for empirical research. The last part describes the research methods which seem to be most useful and adequate in the studies concerning a transfer and acquisition of nondiscursive knowledge.

The aim of this article, based on the literature review, is to explore the senses within the context of knowledge. The article begins with a description of embodied (i.e., also sensory) knowledge’s marginalisation within the social sciences and the reasons for this. After indicating the most popular fields of research, the article explores three main understandings of sensory knowledge: (1) senses as a source of knowledge, (2) senses as acquired skills and (3) sensory knowledge as a result of (collective) activity. In the next part, sensory knowledge is discussed as tacit knowledge, taking into account the problem of its verbalisation and the nature of its acquisition. The last part explores the social construction of sensory knowledge and its relation to subjective experiences, referring to the concepts of intersubjectivity, objectification and legitimisation.

In the introduction, the author explains how categories of race and gender are understood in the social sciences. She then presents the world records set in running competitions; these are a departure point for a discussion of perceptions of race and gender and gender and racial differences in sports. The examples, which pertain to playing rules, financial questions and the media discourse, reveal two divergent strategies in the world of sports in regard to gender and racial differences. The first consists in explaining and legitimising differences with the help of the category of biological discourse, the second - based on political correctness - in ignoring them.

The article’s subject is the status of the homosexual minority in the world of sports, which-as one would assume-is a hetero-normative world. The author draws attention to the different situations of lesbians and gays in sports as a result both of the manner in which sports themselves are seen and of how femininity and masculinity in sports are viewed (certain types of sports activity are perceived as being masculine, and certain as being feminine). The attitudes of the male and female athletes themselves are described, as well as the attitude towards them in the sports environment and their perception in public opinion. The Gay Games, competitions for sexual minorities, are also presented, with their relation to mainstream (heterosexual) sports. The aim of this paper is to analyse the media coverage provided by two Polish daily newspapers (Gazeta Wyborcza and Przegląd Sportowy) during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games according to the athletes’ gender. The paper makes reference to agenda setting theory and media framing and it is based on an analysis of photographs of the games on the front pages and the sporting articles’ main themes. The analysis reveals that the press focused mainly on the Polish medal winners and did not reveal significant differences between women’s and men’s press coverage. Results show that the discourse of nationalism overrode the discourse of gender, the newspapers’ coverage being mainly based on the success of the Polish athletes, regardless of their gender.

W artykule zaprezentowano, w oparciu o indywidualne wywiady pogłębione, doświadczanie ciężarnego ciała przez kobiety. Najczęściej ciężarne ciało jest przedmiotem zainteresowań naukowych albo jako przedmiot medykalizacji czy dyscyplinowania albo analizowane są jego reprezentacje. W tym artykule akcent przesunięty jest na doświadczanie, a tym samym wpisuje się on w rozważania prowadzone w ramach socjologii ucieleśnienia. Doświadczanie ciężarnego ciała, jako ciała o wyjątkowym statusie, łączącego w sobie dwa byty, jest analizowane poprzez odniesienie się do pojęcia granic i ich trzech wymiarów. Po pierwsze, interesuje mnie powiększanie się ciężarnego ciała, jego rozrastanie się i wynikające z tego zmiany codziennych praktyk kobiet oczekujących narodzin dziecka. Po drugie, granice ciężarnego ciała odnoszę do (nie)zależności ciała kobiety i rozwijającego się wewnątrz jej ciała dziecka. I wreszcie po trzecie, na przykładzie społecznej praktyki dotykania brzucha ciężarnej kobiety, analizuję granice prywatności i intymności ciężarnego ciała.
The way women experience a pregnant body is presented in the article on the basis of in-depth interviews. Usually, a pregnant body is a theme of scientific interest as a subject of medicalization and discipline or its representations are analyzed. This paper focuses on experience and, as a consequence, fits into the sociology of embodiment. Experiencing a pregnant body, as a body which has an exceptional status and unites two individuals, is analyzed using the concept of boundaries in three dimensions. Firstly, I am interested in pregnant body’s growing and its consequences for the daily practices. Secondly, I refer the boundaries of a pregnant body to the (in)dependence of a woman and a baby growing inside her body. And thirdly, taking the example of the practice of touching a pregnant woman’s belly, I analyze the boundaries of privacy and intimacy.
