Opis:
Soft X-ray microscopy has great advantages over other types of microscopy on the observation of hydrated specimens at high spatial resolution below 100 nm, and on the elemental and molecular mapping using absorption characteristics. These advantages are particularly suitable for biomedical applications. A possible problem associated with observation of specimens at high spatial resolution in a hydrated environment is described and a strategy to overcome the problem is presented. The latter part of the present report deals with spectromicroscopy to obtain molecular distribution in biological specimens. DNA and protein distributions in isolated nuclei are examined following to the progression of apoptosis at high resolution, and the oxidation product is visualized in human hair in relation to calcium content.

A 15-year-old female spayed domestic short-hair cat was referred for a nonpigmented mass within the pupil of the left eye. In the ophthalmic examination, the non-pigmented mass appeared behind the iris. Visual function was normal, and there were no significant clinical findings except the ciliary body mass. Seven days after presentation, the mass was removed with sclerotomy and iridocyclectomy. The mass was determined to be an iridociliary epithelial tumor upon histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Thirty-eight days after tumor removal, visual function was maintained, and the papillary light reflex remained normal.

Opis:
To investigate the dependence of electron g-factor on magnetic field in GaAs / AlGaAs quantum wells time-resolved photoluminescence measurements under a high magnetic field in different experimental configuration, the magnetic field perpendicular (g up tack ) and parallel (g II) to the quantum confinement direction, has been studied. When the angle between the magnetic field and the confinement direction is 45°, the precession frequency varies depending on polarity of magnetic field and the circular polarization type of excitation light (sigma+ or sigma-). We found that these dependences of the precession frequency exhibit main features of Overhauser effect with an effective magnetic field of 0.5 T that nuclear spins react back on electron spin precession and the g-factor value is not affected by the effective magnetic field. The g+ and gii values agree well with the results of four-band k • p perturbation calculations.

Novel Sugar Dendritic Gd-DTPA Complexes for MRI Contrast Agents were prepared and evaluated by in vitro and in vivo methods. The sugar dendritic MRI contrast agents have a good blood vesse pool character, and draw blood vessels and liver cancer remarkably clearer than the clinically using Gd-DTPA. Phospha sugar derivatives or phosphorus heterocyclic derivatives provided by functional groups such as epoxide, bromide, etc., were prepared and evaluated by MTT in vitro method. These phospha sugar derivatives showed excellent activities against leukemia cells as well as solid cancer cells in fashions of (i) higher activity, (ii) wider spectra, (iii) higher selectivity and specificity distingushing healthy and cancer cells, etc., compared with the molecular targeting chemotheraputic anti-cancer agent, Gleevec.

Opis:
In this study we address the preliminary design for the module layout and bill conveyance routes of automatic teller machines (ATMs). We determine a two-dimensional layout for the modules as below that are approximately rectangular if the ATM is viewed from the side. ATMs require the compact placement of modules within the chassis and conveyance routes that smoothly circulate bills. However, the intersection and overlapping of routes by which the bills are conveyed in opposite directions are not allowed. Applying the bottom-left method and route-design-oriented packing method to the layout of the modules and the direction-oriented maze routing expediting branching and interflow of routes to the bill conveyance route, the application orders are optimized simultaneously using genetic algorithms (GAs). Results show that suitable designs for the ATM including the case when modules are selected as well as placed are achievable using the above simultaneous optimization. The design intention is expressible by changing the weights associated with chassis dimensions, route lengths and the number of route bends, which compose the objective function. The proposed method is useful for efficiently advancing the preliminary design of ATMs. Finally, if island models pursuing individual targets are used along with a GA, the design becomes even more efficient.

Coincidence Doppler broadening spectroscopy was applied to study n-hexane (C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{14}$), cyclohexane (C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{12}$) and cyclohexanone (C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{10}$O), at solid, as well as liquid states. The experiments were performed in parallel with traditional positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Significant positron trapping by oxygen was observed in cyclohexanone; the oxygen effect is stronger in liquid state than in solid one, which can possibly be attributed to positron solvation in polar solution. Coincidence Doppler broadening results for n-hexane and cyclohexane indicate an existence of higher energetic annihilation electrons in Ps-bubble forming liquids than that in solids.

Opis:
A pulsing system for a slow-positron beam was applied to study the region near the surface of low-density polyethylene film using positron-annihilation lifetime measurement. The lifetime and intensity of ortho-positronium near the surface were measured as a function of the incident positron energy (1.6-9.1 keV). The size of intermolecular spaces in the surface region (~ 1500 nm) was larger than that in the bulk region. This tendency was especially strong in the region around 200 nm below the surface. On the other hand, the intensity of ortho-positronium decreased at lower incident positron energies, which was attributed to a decrease in the density of the spur electrons and/or an increase in the number of reemitted positrons from the surface.

Opis:
The positron-irradiation effect on polycarbonate during a positron-annihilation lifetime spectroscopy experiment was investigated using different intensities of $\text{}^{22}$Na positron sources andγ-irradiated samples. The decrease in I$\text{}_{3}$ was larger for a larger intensity of positron sources. In the case of a weak source (≈ 140 kBq), I$\text{}_{3}$ did not change with the elapsed time for non-irradiated samples. However, for 1 MGy irradiated samples, I$\text{}_{3}$ measured with the weak source increased with the elapsed time. This can be attributed to a decrease in the radicals induced in the irradiated samples by γ-irradiation. In order to explain the change in I$\text{}_{3}$ measured at room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures, several effects, such as radicals, cross-linking, structure change, and charging, need to be considered. Also, it is difficult to explain the change in I$\text{}_{3}$ using only one of these effects.

Opis:
Variations of a free volume size of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel and a polyacrylamide gel during a volume phase transition induced by a change of external environment - temperature, solvent composition, pH, and ion strength, are described. The free volume size is probed by positron annihilation lifetime technique. Variations of the free volume size suggest that a nanoscopic environment of the gels is affected by the free volume of the solvent phase and an interaction between the polymer chain and the solvent molecule in the swollen state, and by the aggregation of the polymer chain and a balance of the interaction among the polymer chain and the solvent molecules in the collapsed state. It is revealed that the free volume size reflects the essential change of the nanoscopic environment in the gels which could induce the macroscopic volume phase transition.

The polymerization from monomer to polymer through a polymerization reaction was followed by positron-annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements. The size of the intermolecular spaces of the solid samples increased along with the progress of polymerization.

The effect of visible light exposing on the ortho-positronium formation in polyethylene was studied. Lifetime spectra of positrons in polyethylene were measured in the temperature range between 50 K and 370 K. It was observed that the visible light quenches the enhancement of ortho-positronium intensity (I$\text{}_{3}$) at lower temperature than ca. 250 K - the glass transition temperature of polyethylene. On the other hand, the lifetime of ortho-positronium component (τ$\text{}_{3}$) was not affected by the presence of the visible light.
