Opis:
This paper presents the results of research dealing with forecast changes in the frequency of occurrence of heat and cold stress in Warsaw (Poland) in the years 2001–2100, and the possible influence these may exert on mortality risk. Heat and cold stress were assessed by reference to the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTC I), for which values were calculated using meteorological data derived from the MPI-M-RE MO regional climate model, at a with spatial resolution of 25 × 25 km. The simulations used boundary conditions from the EC HAMP5 Global Climate Model, for SRES scenario A1B. Predictions of mortality rate were in turn based on experimental epidemiological data from the period 1993–2002. Medical data consist of daily numbers of deaths within the age category above 64 years (TM64+). It proved possible to observe a statistically significant relationship between UTC I and mortality rates, this serving as a basis for predicting possible changes in mortality in the 21st century due to changing conditions as regards heat and cold stress.

Opis:
A totally involutional, highly scalable PP-1 cipher is proposed, evaluated and discussed. Having very low memory requirements and using only simple and fast arithmetic operations, the cipher is aimed at platforms with limited resources, e.g., smartcards. At the core of the cipher's processing is a carefully designed S-box. The paper discusses in detail all aspects of PP-1 cipher design including S-box construction, permutation and round key scheduling. The quality of the PP-1 cipher is also evaluated with respect to linear cryptanalysis and other attacks. PP-1's concurrent error detection is also discussed. Some processing speed test results are given and compared with those of other ciphers.

Opis:
The growth of hyphae and prepenetration phenomena on Abies alba roots after inoculation with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscope. Elongated hyphae emanating from the inocula grew indiscriminately across and along root tips and entered the cortical cells randomly, while in subapical root areas they quite often grew along grooves at points of cell junctions. The ridges, folds and depressions seen on the root surface obviously directed the hyphal growth and their further entrance into roots through natural crevices or cracks. Although hyphae of all the isolates could penetrate the roots directly through small openings, the hyphae of the F isolate penetrated preferably more eroded and older parts of roots. A peculiar habit of the direct penetration, characterized by formation a structure resembling infection peg, was observed only after inoculation with the P and S isolates. It is suggested that specifically frequent penetration the roots in eroded areas by the hyphae of the F isolate may be one of the factors connecting with its lower pathogenic capabilities.

Opis:
Prepenetration and penetration phenomena after inoculation of roots of Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in vitro with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscop. There were no differences in the behaviour of hyphae and in the appearence of mycelia formed by the three IS-group isolates. Four types of the root penetration by hyphae were observed. In the first, the entrace of hypha into root was achieved throught tiny pore formed in walls of the cortical cells. In the second, swellings resembling appressoria were formed by the hyphal tips at the points of contact with the root surface. In the third, the hyphae penetrated cells through holes in eroded areas of roots, and in the fourth by the natural crevices at points of the cortical cell junctions. It is concluded that the different frequencies of the four types of penetration observed after inoculation with isolates of the three IS group should be carefully explained in term of their different pathogenic and saprobic capabilities on pine.

Opis:
The morphology and anatomy of generative organs of Salsola kali ssp. ruthenica was examined in detail using the light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The whole flowers, fruits and their parts (pistil, stamens, sepals, embryo, seed) were observed in different developmental stages. In the first stage (June), flower buds were closed. In the second stage (August), flowers were ready for pollination/fertilization. In the third stage (September), fruits were mature. Additionally, the anatomical and morphological structure of sepals was observed by means of LM and SEM. Thanks to the transverse and longitudinal semi-sections through sepals, the first phase of wing formation was recorded by SEM. The appearance of stomata in the epidermal cells of sepals above the forming wings was very interesting, too. The stomata were observed also in mature fruits.

Opis:
Micromorphological characterisation and the comparative statistical analysis of the size of Primula veris L. pollen grains collected in three natural and three cultivated populations were done. Observations were carried out with SEM. The obtained measurements were analysed with the use of one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis Test and the Student-t Test. Pollen grains from long-styled ('pin') flower-morphs were mainly 6 colpate and from shortstyled ('thrum') flower-morphs 8 colpate. Colpi of some grains from 'thrum' flowers were 'sinuous' and 'circular', and they incised into the apocolpium zone. Ornamentation of 'pin' pollen grains was microreticulate, with lumina up to 0.8 μm wide, and for pollen grains from 'thrum' flowers was reticulate and eureticulate with lumina 1.1-1.7 μm wide. In lumina of mesocolpium area some free columellae were observed. Pollen grains from 'thrum' flower-morphs were more variable in size, both in natural and in cultivated populations, than grains from 'pin' flower-morphs. The differences in mean length (P) and breadth (E) of pollen grains from 'thrum' flowers collected in cultivated populations were statistically important (FP = 3.154 for the critical F005 = 3.098; K-We = 7.469 for the critical Test value α=005 = 5.991). Pollen grains from 'thrum' flowers were bigger when coming from plants growing in natural populations (tE = 2.784 for the critical Test value α=005 = 2.001).

Opis:
Pollen grains of 9 species of the genus Plantago (Plantaginaceae), including 8 taxa native to Poland, were observed under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Descriptions of grain sculpture are illustrated only SEM micrographs. The studied pollen grains were medium-sized or small, spherical or prolate spheroidal. Their sculpture was always verrucate with granulation. In the studied taxa, internal apertures had the form of pores. Their number ranged from (4)5-9(14). The pores were scattered on the surface of pollen grains. Identification features of individual taxa include: presence or absence of an annulus around each pore, annulus structure, ornamentation of the pollen grain and operculum, type of aperture membrane, number of internal pores, and pore diameter. We suggest that two new pollen grain types, characteristic of P. intermedia and P. arenaria, should be distinguished, and that P. alpina should be assigned to the P. coronopus type.

The paper presents results of research on seed sculpture of Plantago major, P. intermedia, P. media, P. coronopus subsp. coronopus, P. maritima subsp. maritima, P. atrata subsp. carpatica, P. lanceolata and P. arenaria. Special attention was paid to the sculpture of the external layer of the testa. Observations were made under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The sculpture typical for each species was presented in micrographs. The results indicate that seed sculpture is a very good interspecific identification feature. The study also confirmed that P. maritima should not be assigned to the section Coronopus DC., but to a separate section Maritima Rahn.

Opis:
The ultrastructure of chloroplasts was studied in mesophyll cells of the leaves of silver birch (Betula pendula) showing interveinal chlorosis or premature yellowing, in comparison with leaves without symptoms or exhibiting symptoms of natural senescence. The leaves were collected between May 26 to June 7 and additionally in the September 10-12 from the upper part of the crown, from increments of the past four years. No major difference in ultrastructure of chloroplasts was found between spongy and palisade mesophyll cells. The following senescencerelated changes were observed in chloroplasts of prematurely yellowed leaves and showing inteveinal chlorosis: reduced chloroplast size, degeneration of the membrane systems of thylakoids and increased electron density of plastoglobuli. The most electron dark globules (lipid droplets) were found together with starch grains in cells of spongy mesophyll of leaves showing interveinal chlorosis. Abnormal, spherical and rounded chloroplasts with electron-dark inside of thylakoids or the electron-dark stroma between thylakoids were found only in yellowed and chlorotic leaves in spring.
