- Opis:
- Media events and disaster marathons: How trauma and terror influence communication theoryThe article offers an overview of concepts concerning media events and shows their evolution, influenced by traumatic events and changes in technology and organisation of broadcasting institutions. Both Polish and foreign media provide many examples that illustrate Elihu Katz and Daniel Dayan’s theory and its modifi cations. During the last 20 years semiotics-influenced media scholars and cultural studies researchers (B. Zelizer, E. Rothenbuhler, D. Kellner) have studied media events and the article presents the echoes of their academic discussions. Tamar Liebes’s concept of television’s disaster marathons explains how and why the live broadcasting of history is replaced by the live coverage of trauma, terror, and war.
