    Addressing trauma as a phenomenon which happens on the level of the human psyche and body, this article explores the impact of the interlocking nature of human lingual and bodily being in discovering a fuller possibility of interpreting and understanding woundedness. The non-transparent and problematic character of trauma calls for a hermeneutic investigation in order to gain a far-reaching insight into what happens with us and in us in traumatic experience(s). The imperative to understand the situation of affliction is an unending task which not only relies upon extant understandings but continually pro-vokes new ones. I argue that the process of healing, encompassing the spoken and bodily narrative, does not establish a secure equilibrium, but rather searches for self-restoring, healing energy and commences ever new understandings of what needs to be comprehended and healed. This article offers an examination of trauma as featured in three short stories by British authors: Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence and James Joyce, to exemplify the possibilities of literature to shed light on the intricate nature of traumatic experience. It interrogates the ways in which literature, hermeneutics and psychoanalysis meaningfully converge.

    In his hermeneutics of memory, Ricoeur points to the dialectic character of the interrelation between remembering and forgetting. He abandons an understanding of forgetting as limited only to oblivion, or to deletion in the Bergsonian use of the term. He supplants the negativity of forgetting by the productivity of disremembering, and stretches forgetting to its reserve, to the dynamic unveiling of the details of past events, with varied degrees of truthfulness and accuracy. This article attempts to demonstrate that the positivity of forgetting in the context of reconciliation is a tangible possibility. Forgetting is viewed here as a positive, constructive faculty, which influences the future, makes it possible to create and shape it, and is opposed to a slavish adherence to memory anchored wholly in the past. The totality of the anchorage in the past results in an exclusive focus on remembering, and causes the impasse of being entrapped in a disconsolate past. We ascertain that forgetting is not a failure but rather a productive possibility, either self- -creative or purgative, to educate oneself and the Other towards a more promising future.

    Moderation, traditionally considered to be a value, in consumer societies seems to be understood differently or disappear altogether; overall, it ceases to be something desirable or something rewarding the hardship which ensues from work. According to Jean Baudrillard, contemporary French philosopher, a logical approach to commodities and objects in which work precedes its fruit, nowadays, is undergoing a severe deconstructive process. Phenomena such as buying on credit, as well as acquiring objects immediately and without any effort are becoming an abiding norm, whereas a lack of moderation and a growth in hedonistic attitudes are on a noticeable increase. The aim of this article is an analysis of the phenomena which lead to a subversion of a traditionally established logic – work precedes its fruit just as cause precedes its result. The article focuses on the new ethics begotten by consumer societies; the ethics in which work, frugality, thrift and moderation are no longer perceived as values which enable us to gain and enlarge our social status.
    Umiar – traktowany tradycyjnie jako wartość – w społeczeństwach konsumpcyjnych wydaje się być inaczej rozumiany lub też zanikać, przestaje być czymś pożądanym i wynagradzającym trud związany z pracą. Według Jeana Baudrillarda, współczesnego filozofa francuskiego, logiczne podejście do zdobywania dóbr i przedmiotów, w którym praca poprzedza jej owoce, ulega we współczesnych społeczeństwach dekonstrukcji. Obowiązującą normą staje się powszechne kredytowanie, posiadanie wszystkiego natychmiast i bez wysiłku, zaznacza się brak umiaru i wzrost postaw hedonistycznych. Celem artykułu jest analiza zjawisk, które prowadzą do odwrócenia porządku (praca poprzedza jej owoce, tak jak przyczyna skutek) oraz tworzenia się nowej etyki, w której praca, oszczędność, gospodarność, umiar nie są postrzegane jako wartości dające możliwość zdobywania i powiększania statusu materialnego.

    Woolf’s maturing as a writer was deeply influenced by her traumatic experiences in childhood, the (in)capacitating states of mental instability, as well as her proto-feminist convictions. Long before Barthes, she toppled the traditional position of the author, and her literary enshrinement of “the other reality” reached unity with the world rather than individuality. This article ponders Woolf’s creative impulse and investigates her autobiographical writings to show the import of their impact on her fiction, which, as Woolfian scholarship suggests, can be viewed as autobiographical, too. I argue that philosophical hermeneutics sheds light on the self-portrait that emerges from Woolf’s autobiographical writings and offers a rewarding insight into her path of becoming an author. I assert that Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of subjectivity, and, in particular, his notion of narrative identity provide a route to examine how Woolf discovers her writing voice. In light of his hermeneutics of the self, the dispersed elements of the narrative of life can be seen as a possibility of self-encounter. Woolf’s writings bespeak her gradually evolving self-knowledge and self-understanding, which come from the configuration of those separate “stories” into a meaningful whole. The article also interprets Woolf’s autobiographical writings through the prism of Michel Foucault’s reflection on discourse and subjectivity, indicating that her texts instantiate his assertion of the subject’s constant disappearance.

    Artykuł koncentruje się wokół tematyki hermeneutyki rozmowy. Jego celem jest ukazanie natury rozmowy w świetle hermeneutyki filozoficznej, a zatem rozmowy jako tej przestrzeni ludzkiej egzystencji, która umożliwia rozumienie. Proponuję spojrzenie na milczenie, epifanię, oraz przemianę, wraz z jej nieredukowalnym charakterem, jako na niezwykle istotne elementy rozmowy w znaczeniu hermeneutycznym. W ten sposób pojmowana rozmowa prowadzi do odkrywania nieznanego i stwarza rzeczywistą możliwość spotkania drugiego. Spotkanie to opiera się na dwóch istotnych komponentach: wzajemności i zaufaniu. Rozmowa w znaczeniu hermeneutycznym, poprzez te dwa atrybuty, niesie z sobą katharsis, przemianę i możliwość tworzenia. Nie tylko prowadzi do rozumienia, w które włączeni są partnerzy rozmowy, ale pozwala odkrywać ‘ja’, odkrywać tożsamość. Zaproponowane studium opiera się na założeniu Hansa-Georga Gadamera o uniwersalnym charakterze rozumienia; Gadamer upatruje w rozumieniu fundamentalną kategorię naszego bycia w świecie. Artykuł ilustruje hermeneutykę rozmowy poprzez analizę opowiadania J. Joyce’a „Zmarły”.
    The article focuses on the hermeneutics of conversation. Its aim is to demonstrate the nature of a hermeneutic conversation as triggering a true possibility of understanding. I propose to see silence, epiphany and conversion, with its irreducible character, as significant components of a hermeneutic conversation. Thus conceived conversation leads to an unveiling of the unknown and generates a genuine possibility of an encounter between the self and the Other. The encounter rests on two indispensable attributes: reciprocity and trust. A genuine conversation in the hermeneutic sense, propelled by these two constituents, exerts a cathartic, transformative and formative power. Not only does it lead to understanding in which the speaking partners are involved, but it entails a potent unearthing of the self, a discovery of one’s identity. This study is based on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s premise of the universal character of understanding. Gadamer’s hermeneutics regards understanding as the fundamental category of our being- in-the-world. The article illustrates the workings of the hermeneutic conversation with an analysis of J. Joyce’s “The Dead.”

    Students’ views on the role of dreams in human lifeThe present study was an attempt to analyse dreams as a behaviour and investigated subjectively perceived role of dreams. It examined the private concepts of dreams and dreaming and the influence of dreams on other types of behaviour, which can manifest in sharing dreams with other people, trying to interpret one’s own dreams, believing they have special meaning or behaving according to the clues given by the dream.The sample consisted of 47 subjects, students aged 19–20. A structured interview, individually obtained with every subject, was used. The results indicate interesting relationship between analysed variables and gender, they also show appreciable individual differences in both common notions about dreams and the way dreams can influence other kinds of behaviour.

    In the article, I explore the many faces of violence and vulnerability evoked in religious and secular painting. Drawing upon Hans-Georg Gadamer’s phenomenology of art as play, I aim to show that the creative activity of both the artist and the viewer exceeds the mere actualization of the past event or the instantiation of poetic fantasy. Bringing into conversation Bosch’s, Caravaggio’s, Millais’s, and Waterhouse’s masterpieces, this essay interrogates how their embodiments of the uncanny proximity of violence and vulnerability as two conflicting sides of our human experience complicate the expected symmetry and clear-cut distinction between belligerency and gentleness, powerfulness and the powerlessness, benevolence and malevolence. Inviting us to appreciate the authenticity of their subtle meanings in the continuous veiling and unveiling (Verbegung/Entbergung) of truth, the selected artworks prompt, simultaneously, a possibility of our self-recognition. In the process of our patient tarrying in front of them, we are called on to attend to and acknowledge the more complex realities that speak to our lived experience and defy its apparent homogeneity.
