Opis:
Radiation-induced functionalization of ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) was studied by ESR spectroscopy. The samples were irradiated in the high vacuum of a Van de Graaff accelerator with 1.0 MeV and 1.5 MeV electrons at room temperature and the decay of free radicals was studied after transferring the samples into the air. The samples exhibit a multicomponent ESR spectrum that can be decomposed into: a large asymmetric signal in the centre related to peroxy radicals, a quintet with hyperfine splitting A$\text{}_{F}$ = 4.3 mT centred at g = 2.004, assigned to the in-chain radical (-CF$\text{}_{2}$-CH-CF$\text{}_{2}$-), and a triplet due to an end-chain (-CH$\text{}_{2}$) radical with A$\text{}_{H}$ = 1.6 mT and g = 2.009.

Opis:
Multiferroic bismuth ferrite $(BiFeO_{3})$ nanopowders have been obtained at room temperature by mechanochemical synthesis. Depending on the post-synthesis processing the nanopowders exhibited differences in the mean sizes, presence of amorphous layer and/or secondary phases. Extended magnetic study performed for fresh, annealed and hot-pressed nanopowders revealed substantial improvement of the magnetic properties in the as-prepared powder.

Opis:
Derivatographic, dielectric and complex impedance studies of Rb$\text{}_{4}$LiH$\text{}_{3}$(SeO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{4}$ crystals revealed a superionic phase transition at T$\text{}_{s}$ ≈ 448 K. The bulk conductivity rises from 10$\text{}^{-6}$ to 10$\text{}^{-4}$ (Ωm)$\text{}^{-1}$ at T$\text{}_{s}$, and the activation energy of conductivity in the direction of crystal axes a and b (where a = b for tetragonal symmetry) W$\text{}_{a}$ = W$\text{}_{b}$ decreases from 0.94 eV in the low temperature phase to the value of 0.27 eV at T > T$\text{}_{s}$. The analysis of the results of X-ray studies at room temperature and at 450 K indicates that the fast ion transport, characterized by low activation energy, is related to the delocalization of the H2 protons in the O(12)-H2-O(24) bonds linking the Se(1)O$\text{}_{4}$ and Se(2)O$\text{}_{4}$ tetrahedra. The "cogwheel" mechanism is suggested to be involved in the fast proton transport.

Electric conductivity of $(Bi_{1-x}La_{x}FeO_{3})_{0.5}(PbTiO_{3})_{0.5}$ ceramics obtained from nanopowders synthesized by high-energy milling from respective oxides was studied in the frequency range 10 mHz ÷ 1 GHz. At room temperatures the low-frequency conductivity was found to be dominated by the contribution from poor-conducting grain boundaries, whereas the contribution in the range 1 kHz ÷ 1 MHz, due to the grain interior, was related by us to the small polaron hopping. Moreover, the electron exchange between ferric and ferrous ions activated at higher frequencies was found to be added to the conductivity above ≈ 1 MHz.

The magnetic properties of granular superconductor-insulator composites were investigated. The composites were random composition of the YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) high-temperature superconductor and Pb(Sc$\text{}_{0.5}$Ta$\text{}_{0.5}$)O$\text{}_{3}$ (PST) ferroelectric insulator. The composites exhibited lower superconducting volume ratio than the YBCO content. For samples with YBCO content low enough no global (the whole sample) and local (separated grains) superconductivity was observed. The observed decay of the superconductivity, lowering of the critical temperature, and the increase in number of paramagnetic centres as PST content increases are explained assuming reaction among YBCO and PST phases and possible formation of an additional ones, which did not exist in the initial powders.

The ferroelectric relaxor Pb(Sc$\text{}_{0.5}$Ta$\text{}_{0.5}$)O$\text{}_{3}$-superconductor YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ 50% in weight composite exhibits the onset critical temperature T$\text{}_{c}$=95 K. High pressure studies yield the factor dT$\text{}_{c}$/dp of 1.0 K/GPa, close to the value observed for a pure YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ compound. The microwave absorption studies show the significant role of the intergrain weak links.

Magnetic and dielectric properties of hexagonal ferrites important for applications in microwave absorbers are strongly determined by the processing conditions. We studied dielectric and magnetic response of Sr_{1-x}Nd_{x}Fe₁₂O₁₉ (x=0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.09) solid solutions obtained by coprecipitation method. The structure of the samples was controlled by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope images revealed that the powder is a mixture of small nanograins and crystallites of 500 nm-1 μm in size. Nd³⁺ doping was found to result in an increase in the coercive field which we would like to relate to the domain wall pinning. The doping-induced changes are monotonous with x up to 0.07. The observed dispersion of permittivity was found to be correlated with the frequency behaviour of electric conductivity of the samples.
