Opis:
Azo dye is widely used in the textile industry since it is cost effective and simple to use. However, it becomes a continuous source of environmental pollution due to its carcinogenicity and toxicity. Various methods had been used to remove the azo dye in solution. One of the famous and frequently used is the Fenton process. The Fenton process is one of the advanced oxidation processes where iron catalysed hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radical. Treating azo dyes in solution requires a catalyst to enhance the process of degradation. Herein, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have been proposed as a catalytic material to enhance the performance of Fenton process for azo dye degradation. HEAs have been reported as a promising catalyst due to its high surface area. The higher the number of active sites, the higher the rate of azo dye degradation as more active sites are available for adsorption of azo dyes. The results have shown that HEAs can be used as a catalyst to fasten the Fenton reaction since the degradation time is proven to be shorter in the presence of HEAs. The method derived from the result of this study will contribute in treating azo dyes for wastewater management in the Fenton process.

Opis:
This study investigated the potential of biogas recovery from refinery oily sludge (ROS) inoculated with animals’ manure by co-digestion of in lab-scale biodigesters at mesophilic conditions. Cow dung (CD), cattle manure (CM), and poultry manure (PM) were utilized as co-substrates. The biogas production from the co-digestion process exceeds its production from uninoculated ROS by approximately 67.5 %, 22.13% and 21.6% for PM, CM, and CD, respectively. Kinetics of the co-digestion process was well described by the modified Gompertz model. The predicted and experimental values of biogas production were well fitted with R2 > 0.96, suggesting favorable conditions of the digestion process. New approach for recycling the residual digestate to replace freshwater in concrete mixes was carried out. Results of examining the mechanical properties of the residual digestate-modified concrete mixes demonstrated a potential sustainable approach for the disposal of residual digestate in concrete mixes.

Drought is regarded as one of the environmental constraints threatening agriculture worldwide. Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule prevalent in plants capable of promoting plant endogenous resilience to many environmental challenges including drought. Banana is an important staple food consumed in developing countries especially in Africa. In this research, we studied the role of melatonin in the growth of bananas subjected to drought under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. To achieve this objective, a field experiment on banana (Musa spp., cv. Williams) mother plants and first ratoon was conducted on a private farm for two seasons - 2019 and 2020. Three irrigation treatments, 100, 90 and 80% irrigation water requirements (IWR) were used in conjunction with four concentrations of melatonin as a foliar spray (0 μmol, 40 μmol, 60 μmol, and 80 μmol) to determine the effect of both treatments on banana plant performance under drought. The results showed that there was a substantial difference between treatments, with the foliar application of melatonin at 80 μmol concentration improving most of the yield attributes, relative water content, total chlorophyll and proline with water deficit. However, the foliar application of the molecule lowered the biochemical characteristics mostly at 80% IWR under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. Overall, there was a concentration-dependent response with regards to IWR for the two seasons 2019 and 2020.

ObjectivesNickel (Ni) is an abundant environmental hazard and an occupational pollutant. Exposure to Ni compounds is prevalent in electroplating workers and in the printing industry, among others. The toxicity of Ni manifests as dermatological, gastrointestinal, respiratory, allergic, and cardiovascular symptoms. In particular, hyperbilirubinemia and reticulocytosis have been detected in intoxicated subjects; an observation possibly implicating selective red blood cell (RBC) toxicity. Herein, the interaction of nickel chloride (NiCl2) with human RBCs and associated molecular mechanisms are described.Material and MethodsCells from healthy donors were incubated for 24 h at 37°C in the presence or absence of 0.5‒10 mM of NiCl2, and cytotoxicity was determined through hemoglobin leakage by colorimetry under different experimental conditions. Eryptotic markers were also identified by flow cytofluorometry using Annexin-V-FITC tagging for phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure, light scatter properties for cellular dimensions, Fluo4/AM labeling for intracellular calcium, and H2DCFDA staining for reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, small molecule inhibitors were used to probe the signaling pathways involved.ResultsIt was found that NiCl2 at 10 mM caused profound intracellular calcium overload and significant calcium-dependent hemolysis. Also, NiCl2 reduced forward scatter and increased side scatter, Annexin-positive cells, and ROS levels. Importantly, NiCl2-induced hemolysis was significantly attenuated by the exclusion of extracellular calcium, and in the presence of p38 MAP kinase (MAPK) inhibitor SB203580.ConclusionsIt is concluded that NiCl2 induces p38 MAPK-dependent hemolysis, and stimulates the canonical features of premature eryptosis. This report presents the first description of the molecular mechanisms underlying the hemolytic and eryptotic potential of NiCl2 and, thus, may explain changes in hematological parameters observed in poisoning victims.

Opis:
Partial ranked set sampling (PRSS) is a cost-effective sampling method. It is a combination of simple random sample (SRS) and ranked set sampling (RSS) designs. The PRSS method allows flexibility for the experimenter in selecting the sample when it is either difficult to rank the units within each set with full confidence or when experimental units are not available. In this article, we introduce and define the likelihood function of any probability distribution under the PRSS scheme. The performance of the maximum likelihood estimators is examined when the available data are assumed to have an exponentiated exponential (EE) distribution via some selective RSS schemes as well as SRS. The suggested ranked schemes include the PRSS, RSS, neoteric RSS (NRSS), and extreme RSS (ERSS). An intensive simulation study was conducted to compare and explore the behaviour of the proposed estimators. The study demonstrated that the maximum likelihood estimators via PRSS, NRSS, ERSS, and RSS schemes are more efficient than the corresponding estimators under SRS. A real data set is presented for illustrative purposes.

Purpose: The study of cracks behaviour in a composite plate is of significant importance in the dynamics of the Mechanical parts in order to avoid design failures due to resonance or high amplitude vibrations. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, a square glass-epoxy composite plate is adopted. The plate has four layers with symmetric and asymmetric lamination. Assuming the cracks are profound as defects. The results were obtained by using a numerical solution of mechanical APDL from ANSYS. Findings: It has been found for different boundary conditions that the rank of natural frequencies is decreased by increasing the crack ratio due to the reduction of the plate’s stiffness, whereas the crack direction has no mentioned effect for a small angle of rotation. Research limitations/implications: The accuracy of results is verified by comparing a single case of the current work with other previous investigations. value: Evaluate the influence of the crack length ratio, angle of the crack rotation, boundary conditions and lamination angles on the natural frequencies of the square composite plate with glass-epoxy materials.

A novel application of building demolition waste for removal benzene from aqueous solutions. In this research, demolition waste from buildings has been studied for possible use as benzene removal adsorbent from aquatic solution. The effect of adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial benzene concentration, and initial pH on benzene adsorption capacity have been investigated in the batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption effects initially happened very rapidly and achieved equilibrium within 180 min. Benzene removal was observed to decrease by an increase in the initial concentration of benzene of 300–700 mg·L–1, an increase in the adsorbent dose of 0.4–2.4 g per 100 mL, where an optimum adsorbent dose equal to 1.2 g per 100 mL was found. The potential of adsorption increases with pH 3.0–7.0 to reach the maximum removal efficiency at pH 6.0. The findings showed that equilibrium data were adequately adapted and correlated with the Freundlich isotherm models. The average percentage of the removal at room temperature was about 98%. Results suggest that building demolition waste can be used effectively in industrial wastewater treatment for the removal of aromatic hydrocarbon, benzene, as a low-cost option.

Seasonal variability is the complex non-linear response of the physical climate system. There are two types of natural variability: those external and internal to the climate system. In any given season, natural variability may cause the climate to be different than its long-term average. This study examines with the seasonal variation of the maximum temperatures during the summer season. In addition, the maximum temperatures in May become close to the characteristics of the summer season. The monthly data for maximum temperature of May, June and July were used from Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology (IMOS) for 47 years from 1970 to 2017 for Baghdad city. This period was long enough to estimate the range of approaching maximum temperature (Tmax) May to summer. Results revealed a significant Tmax for Baghdad during the second period (1992–2017) and ?shown similar behavior of Tmax in May to June and July; on the contrary that first period (1970–1991). In second period, two phases have been found out, positive phase and negative phase. The positive phase were happened in 1995, 1999, and 2006, and the negative phase was four cases (1992, 2004, 2013, and 2016), while a few cases recorded in first period. The amplitudes of monthly variability had same distance of leaner correlation especially in 1999 and 2013 that represent coherent wave with summer seasons. The variance difference for Tmax between May and June approximately was 2°C for second study’s period, while exceed this range in first period. This variance change to 7.5°C when found difference between July and May.

The efficiency of a Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR) for domestic wastewater treatment in Basrah was assessed. The experiments were carried out via a laboratory-scale SBBR cylindrical vessel used for this study, with geometric volume of 26 L, having an internal diameter of 15 cm, a height of 40 cm, and a working volume of 13 L. After a one-month start-up cycle for biofilm growth on the fibrous filler, the SBBR research test period lasted two months. The SBBR was run for three weeks to ensure that the biological treatment systems were mature and those steady-state requirements were reached, throughout the starting-up phase of operation, the removal efficiency for COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP were 95%, 89%, 85%, and 93% respectively. The impact of aeration time on the SBBR efficiency was also tested by removal of COD, ammonia, total nitrogen TN, and total phosphorous TP under different levels of dissolved oxygen DO (2.0 – 6.8) mg\L. The SBBR method proved to be an effective method for treating domestic wastewater in Basrah city. The COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP concentrations in the effluent were 42, 6.7, 9.0, and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, with the removal efficiency rates of 90.32 %, 86.24 %, 84.75 %, and 84.38 %. When comparing the SBBR effluent value to the WHO, European, Iraqi, and Chinese discharge standards, it was observed that the COD concentration (42 mg/L) met these standards. while ammonia (6.7 mg/L), TN (9.0 mg/L), and TP (1.0 mg/L) met the WHO, European, and Chinese standard only.

The exponentiated Burr Type XII (EBXII) distribution has wide applications in reliability and economic studies. In this article, the estimation of the probability density function and the cumulative distribution function of EBXII distribution is considered. We examine the maximum likelihood estimator, the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator, the least squares estimator, the weighted least squares estimator, the maximum product spacing estimator, the Cramér–von-Mises estimator, and the Anderson–Darling estimator. We derive analytical forms for the bias and mean square error. A simulation study is performed to investigate the consistency of the suggested methods of estimation. Data relating to the wind speed and service times of aircraft windshields are used with the studied methods. The simulation studies and real data applications have revealed that the maximum likelihood estimator performs more efficiently than its remaining counterparts.

TMP drug coordinated as a tridentate ligand towards the respected three metal ions through two nitrogen atoms of amino groups and nitrogen atom of pyrimidine ring which flanked between –NH2 groups, these assignments confirmed by spectroscopic, magnetic, ESR and thermogravimetric analyses with formulas [Cu(TMP)(H2O)3]Cl2, [Co(TMP)(H2O)3]Cl2 and [Ni(TMP) (H2O)]Cl2. Copper (II) and cobalt (II) complexes have an octahedral geometrical structure included one TMP molecule, three coordinated water molecules and two uncoordinated chlorine atoms while, nickel(II)–TMP complex has a tetrahedral geometric configuration that involved one TMP molecule, one coordinated water molecule and two uncoordinated chlorine atoms. The activation energies and other kinetic thermodynamic parameters were estimated based on the employed of the Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger equations. The nano–structured form of the synthesized TMP complexes was confirmed dependent on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of an interlocking structure made of flax/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites manufactured using hot press compression molding. The flax/PLA composite manufactured at a temperature of 190°C and pressed for 10 minutes obtained the highest values of strength and modulus. A range of core cell sizes between 10 and 40 mm with a height from 20 to 40 mm was fabricated using a simple slotting technique. The larger core size offers a better relative density value when comparing to the smaller size (with a similar number of layers). The results also showed that the 10 mm core size exhibits better compression strength than the 20 and 40 mm core sizes. In contrast, the specific energy absorption (SEA) values of the structures increase as the core size decreases.

Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a trace gas with important impact on atmospheric chemistry, human health and a key pollutant in particular cities, measured from space since the mid-1990s by the GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI, and GOME-2 instruments. This study present ten years (monthly and yearly averaged) dataset from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) used to investigate tropospheric NO2 characteristics and variations over Iraq during 2005–2014. Annual NO2 shows an elevation from the northern to the southern and highest values was at central parts of Iraq. Monthly distributions revels higher values NO2 in winter and summer than spring and autumn seasons, and rising NO2 throughout study period over industrial and crowded urban zones. The trend analysis over Baghdad shows a linear growth rate 9.8% per year with an annual average (5.6·1015 molecules per 1 cm2). The air mass trajectory analysis as hotspot regions shows seasonal fluctuations between winter and summer seasons depend on weather conditions and topography. The increased NO2 values in winter are due to anthropogenic emissions and subsequent plumes from Europe. In addition, in summer because of hot weather and large paddy fields emissions. The lowest NO2 value was at monsoon period mostly linked to the rains. The OMI data and satellite information are able to observe the troposphere NO2 elevation at different regions.
