Opis:
Certain visionary threads of Florian Znaniecki’s thought present in his sociological theory of education merit our attention. They are associated with the concept of creating a grassroots movement of new sociality, capable of becoming a vehicle of reflexive social and cultural changes. These utopian threads related to the current of new humanism appear in all of Znaniecki’s works. The problem of altruism seems crucial in the light of Znaniecki’s axiology, but has not been properly examined until now. When Znaniecki names the new social tasks of education with the goal of shaping social changes, he considers the problem of social good from the perspective of intergroup relations. He searches for a new meaning of altruism, especially collective altruism, which would be the antithesis of collective egoism, and thus would transcend the limits of solidarity only with one’s own group. The issue of altruism, so important for Znaniecki, has only recently begun to regain its place in sociology. Znaniecki’s thought can be read in a connection with the contemporary anti-utilitarian movement and the newly revived discussion about the possibility of humanism after modernity.

Opis:
Robert Morrison MacIver, the successor of Franklin H. Giddings at Columbia University, was a leading opponent of positivism (George Lundberg), empiricism (William Ogburn) and anti-theoretical praxism (Robert Lynd) in sociology. MacIver developed sociological theorizing according to Weber's tradition. The text was focused around the questions of temporality taken up by MacIver: 1) the question of a separate qualitative time; 2) the question of different temporal varieties of existence in the social-cultural area; 3) temporality of social action. MacIver, unnoticed by today's symbolic interactionists, tried to find implications of George H. Mead's work about time for analysis of action as dynamic transformation of the present. In MacIver's theorizing a unity of meaningful or symbolic and temporal aspects of social phenomena is obvious. MacIver's criticism of the methodology of social research focused on analysis of variables was in agreement with criticism of scientific mechanism offered by Bergson. He studied temporal varieties of existence of events, processes and cultural objects, and especially the various ways of entering time through society, history and culture. MacIver made temporality of action the basic and key problem. He should be considered a symbolic interactionist, like Florian Znaniecki and Pitirim Sorokin.

The subject-matter of the paper is antagonism due to cultural differences between collective identities, and not a conflict due to competition of interests. The inter-group opposition may be of a twofold character: defensive (characterized by hostility) or offensive (characterized by pragmatic egoism). The mechanism that governs the building up of hostile antagonism embraces several stages: a) avoidance of social communication, b) aversion as a negative assessment of opponents’ emotions and values, c) hateful fights, and d) revenge. They should be should be prevented by the removal of barriers which make a wider social solidarity impossible.

Opis:
Symbolic interactionists did not pay attention to analysis of the ontological foundations of their theory. However, this direction of theoretical thinking in sociology does contain such most general assumptions, particularly with respect to man as a social creature. In symbolic interactionism three images of man can be pointed to: homo reciprocus, homo symbolicus, and homo faber − man entering mutual interactions, using signs, and efficiently manipulating objects in his environment. The orientation of symbolic interactionism is subject to significant limitations as the dimension of valus in communication and interaction has not been duly taken into account. It is necessary to accept also the image of homo aestimans − man evaluating. Florian Znaniecki's conception of value is suggested which includes both the meanings and the axiological significance of objects in interaction contexts. Symbolic interactionism does not also use such a conception of symbol that surpasses the domain of signs in everyday reality of activity. Hence developing the symbolic-interaction theory requires differentiation between the signs and symbols which are equally axiologically characterized in communication.

Opis:
At the beginning of the 1980s, Pierpaolo Donati initiated in Italy the relational turn in sociology, while in France Alain Caillé stipulated the anti-utilitarian movement in social sciences. The acronym MAUSS (from Mouvement Anti-Utilitariste en Sciences Sociales) simultaneously refers to the surname of Marcel Mauss, author of the pioneering work on the gift-Essai sur le don. This movement forms and spreads a new gift paradigm. The notion of the gift has shifted from a specific phenomenon researched in archaic societies towards a basic category for theorizing social order and taking a central position in research on modern transformations. The relational paradigm also focuses on the gift as a crucial aspect of social relations, and on its importance for the civil society. The article traces and discusses various interpretations of the concept of gift, along with the influence of the anti-utilitarian movement and the gift paradigm on relational sociology.

REFLEXIVITY
SOCIAL THEORY
THEOLOGY
Opis:
This sketch presents important conceptions of reflectivity - including those of Anthony Giddens and Niklas Luhmann - as well as the developmental stages of the new interest in reflectivity, as opposed to reflection, on the grounds of sociology, and through sociology - in other social sciences as well. Subsequently, attention is drawn to radical reflectivity. Social theory based on the latter is a praxis theory, formulating opinions and beliefs, the propagation of which should lead to their confirmation as a result of their reflexive influence on social reality. Reflectivity is also a principle of relational social epistemology, which implies the necessity of analyzing various relational dimensions of the subject, as well as knowledge understood as a social process. The principle of radical reflectivity leads to pursuit of social theory as a multidimensional criticism of forms of knowledge and models of thinking about the world hitherto existing in European culture. In this search for critical distance, theology has also drawn the interest of reflective social theory.

The article analyses the use of Thomas Kuhn’s concept of paradigm in sociology, presented in the 20th century as a multiparadigm science. The unity of the so-called interpretive paradigm is questioned and the transformation of the interpretive orientations in sociology under the influence of postmodernism and critical praxis theory is analysed. The problems of the subject’s reflexivity and the intersubjectivity of the life-world, which have their roots in pragmatism and phenomenology, are discussed on the backdrop of new attempts to reconstruct systematic sociology.

Opis:
The comparison of the picture of social sciences at the beginning of the 20th century and their state at the start of the 21st leads to the discovery of unexpected changes, contradictions and paradoxes typical of post-modernism. A question is addressed: do all these changes, which bring about the discussion of the post-modern era, cover also sciences, and social sciences in particular. Paradoxically, the post-modern era of informationalism and a society of knowledge is not conducive to the autonomy of science and consequently disturbs the frail and delicate autonomy of social sciences. The post-modern phenomenon of departing from the modernist division of sciences and scientific disciplines manifests itself in theoretically and methodologically dubious cultural, social, political, and other studies. One can look at that phenomenon as a reaction to excessive fragmentation and autonomization in social sciences and an attempt of integrating reconstruction aiming also at eliminating the autonomy of theory in relation to practice.

Opis:
From Znaniecki’s point of view, and alluding to present-day conclusions about the so-called reflexivity of modernity, one would have to say that it is a problematic reflexivity, as long as knowledge about the principles of cultural becoming will be minimal. Znaniecki did not deny the justification of sociological studies that start out from naturalist premises. However, he rightly believed that the dependence of cultural order on natural order is not only shrinking, but the reverse is in fact happening-there is an increasing influence of cultural order on natural order, and the rising complexity of cultural phenomena renders the naturalist approach scientifically less productive. The development of sociology as a cultural science led, according to Znaniecki, to displaying the possibility of a world-society as a society founded on culture, while the development of cultural sciences would be an expression of global responsibility for the world-culture society.

Opis:
The memory of the “Solidarity” movement, problems of memory and conflicts of memory are analyzed in the contemporary context of the formation of collective identities in Poland. Politics of memory and commemoration are discussed as part of the politics of symbolization. Symbolic construction of “Solidarity” is analyzed on two levels: the symbolism of the organization of collective actions and discursive symbolism-in other words-symbolism in the “Solidarity”movement and the symbolization of the movement. The other aspect implies politics of symbolization, politics of memory and commemoration, conflict of interpretations and conflict about the memory. The “Solidarity” movement has had many meanings and the interpretation of the movement can refer to various frames of meanings: a workers’ revolution, a civil revolution, a movement for national liberation, a movement for religious deprivatization, a moral movement. The multiplicity of meanings has generated conflicts of interpretations. Collective memory is crucial for the phenomenon of “Solidarity” both as a historical movement and as representations in discourses-the symbolic movement of memory.

The article draws attention to the potential significance of Herbert Blumer’s heritage in the sociological analysis of the issues with which modern democracy has to deal. It aims to strengthen that current of interpretation pertaining to symbolic interactionism which opposes the widespread tendency to consider it as amicrosociological orientation. The article emphasizesmedium-range phenomena-in other words, mesosociological problems of organizations, interest groups and social movements. Blumer helped George H. Mead’s ideas, including the basic concept of the self, find a fuller application in sociology. To properly evaluate Blumer’s achievements, one should consider him as a researcher of the changes occurring in modern societies in general. He emphasized the existence of a constant process of defining and redefining social institutions, and thus, the role of civic agency-in other words, ultimately, of the reflexive self. In Blumer’s conceptions of symbolic interaction, joint action and negotiated order one may see an elaboration of the interactional order of the democratic society.

Opis:
The conceptions of Pierre Bourdieu should be placed in the post-structuralist trend of the theory of discourse. He deals with the formation of social meanings in group conflicts for the control over meaning. Since he parts from the hitherto paradigms, some scholars think that the French sociologist's conceptions bear the traits of post-modernism. Bourdieu assumes that the „social nature” of language is one of its principal, internal characterizations. Therefore he rejects the autonomy of language and symbolism in general, including their analysis again within the social conditions of „production, reproduction and usage.” If a sign in the conception of de Saussure pertains to an informing communication and contains the signifying-signified structures, the symbol – apart from the level of understanding – contains also evaluation and authority. Therefore Bourdieu connects the symbolic dimension of culture with social actions and relations. Bourdieu, in comparison with pragmatism or Znaniecki's theory, has undoubtedly pushed to the foreground the problem of the symbolization policy. The symbolic power consists of establishing the gnosiological order - doxa, i.e. the acceptance of the immediate significance of the social world.
