Opis:
The paper constitutes part of some more comprehensive textbook and embraces several introductory issues concerning philosophy of nature. 1 examine first different notions of this philosophical discipline used in various historically relevant contexts. Later on, 1 present reasons for claiming the philosophy of nature revival nowadays. Some aspects of its update are examined: the traditional and contemporary aims; roles related to different conceptions of the natural philosophy; its main stages of progressive change followed by its central categories. These developments have been accompanied by the growing view that philosophy of nature has become sufficiently justified in existence.

Opis:
The paper brings a concise analysis of the content contained in the book. Considerations concern the metascientific theory of philosophical cosmology, especially the relations between natural sciences and the so called classical philosophy of nature. Procedures of philosophical interpretation of scientific facts are postulated to ensure methodological and epistemological correctness of all philosophical theses. Basic operations in this branch of philosophy include conceptualization, defining, inferring especially in the form of explaining and justifying. Such cognitive operations constitute the whole process of interpretation, insists Joseph Turek.

Opis:
The paper discusses naturalistic axiology of L. Laudan (normative naturalism) and social epistemology of H. Longino (contextual empiricism). Both standpoints are subjected to criticism. G.Doppelt, A.Rosenberg, and H.Siegel argue that Laudan's axiology lacks any naturalistic foundation. K.Freedman shows that this objection is based on a misunderstanding of Laudan's use of the term “naturalism”. He distinguishes two senses of this term running throughout Laudan's work. Once those senses are made explicit the above objection dissappears. Next, the attention is drawn to the virtues of Longino's epistemology as a viable alternative both to positivism and holism. The paper presents objections raised by Ph. Kitcher (the charge of relativism), F.Schmitt (the charge of incoherence) and M.Solomon (the charge of individualism) against Longino's views and arguments defending her position developed by K. B. Wray. The paper claims that the discussions presented can be best understood within the framework of (epistemic) axiology initiated in the fifties of the XXth century – among others – by R. Rudner, C.W.Churchman, I.Levi.

Opis:
This paper consists of four parts. The first one is introductory and the second historical in its character. Both are relatively short. Perhaps the most topical is the third part in which several approaches towards different kinds of progress have been exposed. The subject of the analysis is first scientific or cognitive progress, and next technological and social as well as other kinds which are appropriate for different domains of the humanities including philosophy. The analysis proceeds in comparative rather than in absolute terms. In the fourth, i.e.last part of this essay some philosophical, esp. ontological and methodological implications of the progressiveness in science, technology and in humanities are discussed. As an effect of these discussions it becomes evident that in contrast with the neutrality of scientific progress, what is taken to constitue technological and other kinds of nonscientific progress also depends on moral values, since their utilities with their weights (in terms of decision theory) reflect ethically relevant social valuations.

Opis:
In this paper we have discussed in general terms a number of problems concerning one of the most fundamental questions of the new philosophy of technology. Valuational operations as such a question is analysed in several contexts entitled as follows: importance of this issue; science, technics, technology; philosophy of science and philosophy of technology; value theory or axiology and some oppositions characteristic for this branch of philosophy; values in science and technology; technology as an application field for ethics and morality. We defend the view that science and technology are interconnected activities which have different aims, and different patterns of progress and valuation. The connection between scientific, and technical or technological valuation is also discussed.

Opis:
Kontekstowe objaśnienia tych obiektów relatywizowano do sytuacji poznawczej potencjalnych odbiorców. Uwzględniano zarówno adeptów, jak i profesjonalnie zainteresowanych refleksją nad czynnościowo i wytworowo ujmowaną nauką. Podjęte zagadnienia są rozpatrywane poprzez stopniowe dyskusje aspektywnie wyselekcjonowanych problemów. W rozpatrywanej perspektywie należą do nich: ramowe stanowiska; terminy-klucze; statyka/dynamika nauki; rewolucje w filozofii nauki; dwa konteksty; nowa filozofia nauki; nurt normatywny i deskryptywny; kategoria rewolucji naukowych; super-, supra- i maksiteorie jako jednostki ponadteoretyczne; problematyka aksjologiczna; pluralizm filozofii nauki; problem/teoria problemu; wartość — kategoria z zakresu aksjologii epistemicznej; dalsze zagadnienia filozofii nauki; charakterystyka opracowania.
The opposition between statics and dynamics of science in the entire content of the paper is supposed. We understand science as natural science(s). The selection of categories as an object of examining is directed by reasons generated through scientific and metascientific practice. Contextual elucidations are related to actual situation of potential receivers. Among them are so students as well as professional scientists interested in solving scientific problems. To do so the following questions, namely: background standpoints; key-terms; statics/dynamics of science; revolutions in the philosophy of science; two contexts; new philosophy of science; descriptive and normative trends; scientific revolutions category; super-, supra- and maxitheories; problems of epistemic axiology; philosophy of science pluralism; problem/theory of problem; value — category of epistemic axiology; other questions of the philosophy of science; characteristic of the entire elaboration is subsequently discussed.

Opis:
Część pierwsza tego artykułu ukazała się w "Rocznikach Filozoficznych" 37-38:1989-1990 z. 3 s.83-160. Artykuł powstał w ramach dotowanego przez MEN projektu badawczego (18VII 1990)   The article consists of two parts, the first of which was published in "Roczniki Filozoficzne" 36-37:1989-1990 nr 3. The whole essay aims at exposing the current controversies on this topical issue, which we encounter in modern schools of metascience. They are mainly represented by the empiricist tradition, the Popperian standpoint, the post-positivist school and the so called synthetic point of view. According to the logical empiricist image of science the assessment of scientific laws and theories is simply a matter of confrontation between them and the data. If the right kind and quantity of positive evidence can be collected, the theory is acceptable. If, on the other hand, the evidence is negative, then the proposed law or theory has to be rejected. Hence the label − monocriterial appraisal of scientific laws or theories. Science is also cumulative. Thus, through time, the scope of successful science becomes steadely wider, and nothing important is lost in the process. Popper's attempts to provide the concept of cognitive progress include a conception of the conflict that arises in the case of successive scientific theories. His task is to show how one of such conflicting theories has an advantage over the other. Popper takes two factors into account. One concerns the issue of how close each of the false theories is to being true. But this alone is not a sufficient basis for a criterion of progress, for it implies that some relatively trivial generalization might be a progression beyond some comprehensive albeit refuted, theory. Consequently, a second factor must be considered, namely the comprehensiveness or non-triviality of a theory. This latter factor constitutes Popper's concept of content, and a combination of both factors gives his notion of verisimilitude. Explanation and prediction are other main dimensions of theory appraisal and preference. Popper's methodology is, therefore, fallibilist, objecitivistic, preferentionalist and evolutional. During the 1960s and later a number of new theories of scientific change proliferated. The unit of comparative evaluation are large-scale theories (paradigms, research programmes, research traditions), on which different epistemic desiderata are imposed. On this occasion problems of teleological conception of science, questions of rationality and rationalism are discussed. The controversy between absolutism and relativism is also taken into account, as they are related to the status of desiderata. At the end of this part of our essay w e have a look at G. L. Pandit's interactive model of the growth of knowledge. In this model the dynamic interaction between developmental structures of problems and theories is a function of the explanatory power of a scientific theory (TEP) and the so called resolving power of a scientific theory (TRP). Both TEP and TRP serve as methodological bases of critical epistemic appraisals in empirical science. Finally, the analyses of both the problem and various characteristics of scientific progress are followed by the considerations about epistemic and extraepistemic determinants of progressiveness in science. We recognize, in this way, the necessity of multidimensional appraisals. Nevertheless, it presupposes the technological and social progress. In each part of this paper the evaluational considerations are preceded by the descriptions of different approaches to the units of scientific achievements and logical relations between them.
