Opis:
Radiation processing has been considered as a promising process for the treatment of textile industry waste effluents. In this study, the possibility of using gamma-rays to degrade and decolorize Apollofix dyes in water has been investigated. Two different Apollofix dyes, Apollofix Red (AR) and Apollofix Yellow (AY) in aqueous solutions were irradiated in air with doses from 1.0 kGy to 8.0 kGy at a 0.14 kGy/h of dose rate. The change in absorption spectra, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and the degree of decoloration (percent reduction in optical density) were examined in the presence and absence of H2O2. The absorption bands at 534 nm and 420 nm for AR and AY were observed to decrease rapidly with increasing irradiation dose. The degree of decoloration of each dye solution with irradiation dose was estimated as 100 percent for the lower concentration (50 ppm) dye solutions. The complete decoloration was observed after 2.0 kGy and 1.0 kGy doses for AR and AY dyes. The COD and BOD reduction and the change of pH for all dye solutions on irradiation showed similar behavior.

Opis:
Aqueous solutions of caffeine were treated with ozone and gamma irradiation. The amounts of remaining caffeine were determined after solid phase extraction as a function of absorbed dose and ozonation time. In addition to this, some important parameters such as inorganic ions, chemical oxygen demand (COD) dissolved oxygen and total acidity changes were followed. Caffeine (50 ppm) is found to be completely decomposed at 3.0 kGy and 1.2 kGy doses in the absence of H2O2 and in 1.20 mM H2O2 solutions, respectively. In the case of gamma irradiation after ozonation, 50 ppm caffeine was removed at 0.2 kGy when the solution was ozonized for 100 s at a rate of 10 g O3 h–1 in 400 mL 50 ppm paracetamol solution.

Opis:
Flotation of lignites is inherently difficult. However, pre-heat treatment of coal is also known to make coal surfaces more hydrophobic possibly through removal of water entrapped in the structure of coal. In this context, the objective of this study was, therefore, to determine changes in the hydrophobicity of some lignites under moderately controlled heat treatment and correlate the flotation response of lignites in different salt solutions of NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 without using any reagent. The results of flotation tests suggested that under the present test conditions, it was possible to float thermally pre-treated lignite samples of partially hydrophobic character in salt solutions in the absence of collector and frother. In addition, the effect of heat treatment on hydrophobicity, and in turn flotation was explained by a theoretical model based on extended DLVO interactions to quantify the effects of both heat treatment and salt concentration on bubble-particle interactions. The results of theoretical modeling suggested that the removal of hydrogen containing groups from coal surfaces significantly contribute to the electrical double layer and hydrophobic forces that govern the magnitude of energetic barrier and also the extent of bubble-particle attachment.

Opis:
In recent years, the influence of different crushing systems (compression, impact, attrition) has been receiving more attention due to their significant role on particle liberation and shape of particles. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different crushing systems on both liberation degree and shape factors of chromite particles along with their enrichment conditions by shaking table. The tests were conducted on -1+0.5, -0.5+0.212 and -0.212 mm size fractions using the Wilfley type shaking table. The results of these tests showed that concentrates with higher metal contents were obtained by impact crushing of chromite in proportion to higher liberation degree and roundness of particles. Therefore, it was found that selective breakage can well be obtained by impact crushing in all fractions. The results of this study demonstrated the importance of crushing type on the liberation and enrichment processes.

Opis:
Nowadays, dry beneficiation technologies with an air dense medium fluidized bed come into prominence in the field of coal preparation. In this study, the optimum conditions for different operational parameters such as discharge stargate rate, pulsation frequency, and superficial air velocity were investigated on separation of semi bituminous coal from Soma (Imbat) region using a semi pilot scale Allair jig unit. The experimental studies were carried out with two coal size fractions of -15+4 and -4+1 mm by applying rougher and scavenging stages. After the optimization of each parameter, the results for the rougher stages indicated that clean coal products could be obtained with 11.80% and 16.74% ash contents for -15+4 mm and -4+1 mm size ranges, respectively. In addition, discardable tailings with 65.44% and 60.95 % ash contents could be obtained as the result for the scavenging stages. Finally, the combination of these results for -15+1 mm size exhibited that 59.80% of the feed material with 37.70% ash content can be upgraded to clean coal products with low ash content as 19.80% while the remaining part was discarded as tailings with 68.60% ash content. These values suggested that optimizing the operational parameters of unit brings better results which are applicable in industrial application of dry processes compared to wet processes.

Opis:
In this study, after the pulse shape calibration of a liquid scintillation counting (LSC) spectrometer (Quantulus 1220), the efficiency was determined depending on sample quenching parameters. Then, gross alpha and beta activities in two spiked water samples obtained from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were used for the validation of the ASTM D7283-06 method, which is a standard test method for alpha and beta activity in water by LSC. Later, the drinking water samples (35 tap water and 9 bottled water) obtained from different districts of Ankara, Turkey, were measured. The maximum gross alpha activities are measured to be 0.08 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.13 Bq/L for bottled waters, whereas the maximum gross beta activities are found to be 0.18 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.16 Bq/L for bottled waters. These results indicate that these drinking water samples are below the required limits, which are 0.1 Bq/L for alpha emitting radionuclides and 1 Bq/L for beta emitting radionuclides. As a result, gross alpha and beta activities in drinking water of Ankara were determined accurately by this validated LSC method. It is also worth noting that LSC is a rapid and accurate method for the determination of gross alpha and beta activities without requiring a tedious sample preparation.

Opis:
The effective mass of the quasiparticles in a d-wave superconducting system has been calculated via magnetization measurements done by SQUID by using the advanced derivative method used in our previous works. Phenomenological analogy between the double helix quantum wave, which does exist within the primitive cell of the d-wave superconductor, and the human DNA was previously made. In this work, the numerical proof of the analogy mentioned has been realized by determining the magnitude of the attractive force of d-wave structure and comparing with the magnitude of the force that holds the double strand of human DNA that are both of the same order of $10^{-10}$ N. Moreover, the wavelength of the double helix quantum wave of the superconducting system corresponds to ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum that exactly coincides with the wavelength which is used for exciting the states in human DNA.
