Opis:
Poniższy artykuł jest prezentacją i próbą oceny Rysu historii medycyny powszechnej, dzieła autorstwa jednego z wybitniejszych polskich historyków medycyny wieku XIX, Józefa Oettingera. Dotrwał natomiast do naszych czasów kompletny rękopis przechowywany w zbiorach specjalnych Katedry Historii Medycyny Collegium Medicum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego.
The following article presents and attempts to assess The Outline o f the General History of Medicine, a work by one of the most eminent Polish historians of medicine of the nineteenth century, Joseph Oettinger. Oettinger was one of the first physicians who deliberately wanted to study the past of his profession. The Oettinger s work discussed in this paper was intended to have been the culmination of the years of his research and historical reflection. His text, however, apart from a few fragments, has never been published. However, a complete manuscript has survived to our days and it is kept in the special collections of the History of Medicine Department of the Jagiellonian University. The Outline of the General History of Medicine has had no luck with researchers. It is mentioned occasionally but so far its content, the style of narration, the internal structure and possible influences that may have accompanied its writing have not been subjected to further analysis. This text is aimed to fulfill this gap to some extent.

Understanding of the fundamental law and mechanisms governing the phenomenon of life is an inherent feature of human civilization. With the birth of philosophy comes first speculation about the physical conditions of life processes, which consequently will lead to the formation of the first scientific theories. Among them an important role plays the Hippocratic humoral theory. This scientific rout will be taken by the next generations of researchers seeking for the most appropriate methods and precise language of science. A significant breakthrough came in the 16th century, when Paracelsus coined his philosophical and alchemical doctrine which gives such attention to perpetual changes in living organisms, then described on the basis of transmutation. Nearly three centuries later, in the early nineteenth century the polish physician and chemist Jędrzej Śniadecki introduced the concept of metabolism, based on the principles that are present in compounds and chemical reactions. Just a dozen years later, in 1828, Wöhler`s synthesis of urea gives birth to organic chemistry. Language of chemistry has become a tool for the description of biological phenomena, slowly building up physiological chemistry which shortly was turned to biochemistry. For a young science one of the first challenges was the level of the rudimental for the living organisms dyes, which rightly appeared as essential for the understanding of the chemical nature of the phenomena of life. From that point the studies on chlorophyll (Pelletier, Caventou, Shunck, Hoppe- -Seyler) and hemoglobin (Hünefeld, Funke, Hoppe-Seyler) become crucial topic. In this pioneering studies significant, and sometimes decisive role was to be played by Polish scientists (Teichmann, Marchlewski, Nencki, Zaleski). Especially a few years’ time and very intense cooperation of Leon Marchlewski and Marcel Nencki would bring momentous decision. Marchlewski’s bold hypothesis about the chemical unity on the level of the basic dyes in plant and animal worlds was fully confirmed in the experimental procedure and the results achieved by Nencki brought the solution to the problem of the chemical structure of hemin. Joint research of Polish scientists became the foundation of modern biochemistry and had changed the biological and medical sciences so deeply, that we can talk about “biochemical revolution”. The following paper is an evaluation of the speech held by me during X National Organic Chemistry Symposium – OSCO X, Lodz, April 16–18, 2015.

A brief historical outline of wartime psychiatryFear and panic were with soldiers on the battlefield from most ancient times. Alarming symptoms, leading to a collapse of morale, discipline and frequent desertions were often observed after battles. Even though already in the sixteenth century, there was a separate term which defined the state of fatigue and apathy among soldiers – namely Heimweh, which later gave way to Schweizer Heimweh, it is only the 19th century which will bring the first change in the treatment of soldiers suffering from stress. Nevertheless it took subsequent decades and the nightmare of World War I to subject the problem to proper medical research. The concept of shell shock or battle fatigue later became more and more precisely defined as psycho-somatic disorders. Slowly, specialized programs were created both at the level of diagnosis and therapy respectively – for example the works of the Yerkes Committee, those of William HR Rivers, Charles S. Myers or Frederick W. Mott. In our contemporary times, we are more and more precise in talking about the factors causing distressing symptoms among soldiers and veterans. We are seeking for the best ways to prevent and neutralize the effects of stress attaining as a result an increasingly evaluated interdisciplinary research studies which involve specialized teams of psychiatrists and psychologists.

Opis:
The article presents the history of creation of the first medical clinic in Poland. In the introduction, the changes taking place in the European 18th century medicine have been presented, with particular emphasis given on the development of the dispute between the supporters of a mechanistic way of treatment of life and pathological phenomena (Hoffmann, La Mettrie), and the proponents of vitalism represented by the followers of Ernest Stahl mainly grouped in the so-called School of Montpellier (Barthez, Bordeu). It was the confrontation of materialism and holism that gave way to the exploration of new grounds for diagnosis and treatment (Cullen, Brown) that laid foundations for a medical clinic. The theoretical framework was developed by Hermann Boerhaave, Gerard van Swieten implemented it whereas Anton de Haen filled it with crucial content. The emergence of the so-called Older Viennese School was an important beginning of clinical teaching in Europe. It was the experience of Vienna that drew Jędrzej Badurski, who in the late 1770s began the reform of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cracow. This article is based mainly on sources from that time, aiming to reconstruct a theoretical basis and practical arrangements for the creation of the first Polish medical clinic. On the basis of the collected documents, it can be assumed that Badurski was fully aware of the importance of his decisions and paid attention to the latest achievements of the medical theory and practice. Thus, the clinic in Cracow was modelled on the leading clinical centers of the contemporary Europe.

Opis:
Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838) remains one of most eminent scholars of his times. Remembered as a founder of modern chemistry in Poland, one of early pioneers in anthropology and social sciences, and author of the two volume book Theory of organic being (Teoria jestestw organicznych), in which the modern metabolic concept of life processes can be considered as grounded; he was also a highly educated and gifted physician. This paper aims to show the importance of medicine in Śniadecki’s theory of life, in its physiological and pathological manifestations in regard to the clinical model and the medical practice which he followed. It deals with the concept of illness as described in Śniadecki’s writings, focusing on the role of irritation and organic reaction as the major components of his proposed pathological model. The dynamic and variable conditions of diseases are explained by means of metabolic changes, which was a truly pioneering concept, already described in Śniadecki’s earlier theoretical works on the subject of life and nature. The paper discusses the problem of influence in terms of the leading medical doctrines at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, namely those of John Brown (1735–1788) and François Broussais (1772–1838), on Śniadecki as a researcher and practitioner. For practical (clinical) medicine his reserve towards auscultation and percussion, then a slowly gaining field in clinical subjects, is clearly present in Śniadecki’s writings and teaching. His passive and, as far as we can tell, sceptical attitude is explained by the lack of convincing evidence, based on empirical and experimental data, which would enable to connect the physical signs of a diagnosis fulfilled by means of stethoscope to that of the percussion process. It must be remembered that the books by Adam Raciborski (1809–1871) and Joseph Škoda (1805–1881) were both published in the 1830s, where modern diagnosing methods were established using a suitable scientific background to explain their importance. This was too late to influence the clinical work of Śniadecki. The same scepticism, with an obvious demand for strict and experimentally derived data, is probably responsible for the conservative therapy present in Śniadecki’s teaching.

The paper presents results of comparative tests of exhaust gases toxicity of GTD-350 turboshaft engine powered by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and conventional JET-A1 fuel. Structure of GTD-350 engine’s test bed was discussed. Because of explosion danger of LPG vapour the test stand was arranged in the open air. Paper comprises specification of LPG supply system, gas injector’s construction and visualization of LPG injection. The supply system was based on the newly constructed pressurized injectors. Required LPG operating pressure was obtained by pressurizing LPG tank using nitrogen and LPG-flow was controlled using needle valve. A series of photographs presents shape of fuel streams for new injector supplied by JET-A1 and LPG. Photos of flame torches for multi-hole and conical type injectors fuelled by LPG are inserted as well. A comparative study of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide as well as oxygen concentration for GTD-350 equipped with new injectors fuelled by LPG and standard supplied by Jet-A1 was carried out. The study comprised turbocharger speed range between 40 and 80% of NTS. The exhaust gas temperature comparison for above-mentioned configuration is presented as well. All data shown in presented figures are mean of 6 measurements. All completed tests were carried out for standard GTD-350 engine combustion chamber.

In the paper, a 100W SiC MESFET amplifier design dedicated for a L-band T/R module of APAR is presented. The output power higher than 100 W has been achieved by combining in a balanced configuration two single stages with Cree's 60 W CRF24060 SiC MESFETs. The amplifier design methodology is based on the small-signal model and DC characteristics of SiC MESFET. The model is extracted using the transistor Sparameters at three operating points for On-state, Off-state and normally biased. The measurements and simulations prove usefulness of the proposed design method. The amplifier was excited with pulsed and cw signals for the case temperature ranging from 60°C to 140°C. As a result of the case temperature changes the output power drop was lower than 0.5 dB at the level of 150 W.
