    The article is dedicated to the problems of history education in the early school years, a question which until now has been almost neglected in literature. Studies on constructing the historical senses of primary school pupils can help, if only partially, to fill in this gap. Two aspects are discussed: historical senses constructed in the context of educational situations (focusing on the content, developed around the teacher, concentrated on pupils’ knowledge) and historical senses constructed by pupils via narration. By analyzing the research material, the author was able to distinguish the subjective senses and meanings which pupils participating in the study assigned to spheres of private life and to spheres which are manifestations of grand history in private stories.

    Opis:
    Children create narratives by imitating styles present in their culture and own experiences. Hence, nurseries and primary schools play an important role in children’s building narratives. My intention has been to present narratives constructed by children taking into consideration the form rather than the content, as it had been done by V. Propp in his morphology. This type of researching children’s texts has not been previously employed in early school pedagogy. The analyses demonstrated that most stories created by early school pupils assume the form of modified and updated fairy tales, with a different number of functions.

    Istnieje związek między językiem, myślą a rzeczywistością. Język jest głównym czynnikiem wpływającym na kształt naszych spostrzeżeń, sądów, wiedzy i zwyczajów, a narracja umożliwia ludziom opowiedzenie o sensie konstruowanej przez siebie rzeczywistości. W narracji liczy się nie tylko treść, ale i konstrukcja, która stała się podstawą rozważań w niniejszym artykule. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od ustaleń terminologicznych (tekst narracyjny, narracja, narratologia, swoistość narracyjnej struktury), rozpatrywanych z punktu widzenia różnych nauk, a także od przedstawienia założeń dotyczących analizy strukturalno-funkcjonalnej tekstów narracyjnych w świetle teorii de Saussure’a, Rosner, Barthes’a i Todorova. W opracowaniu położono nacisk na analizę struktur narracyjnych zaproponowaną przez Proppa, twórcę ogólnych wzorców budowania opowieści. Jest ona przydatna do badań nad różnymi systemami kultury, w tym kultury masowej. Ponadto stanowi podstawę do analiz narracji filmowych czy też różnego typu narracji ustnych i pisanych. Morfologię Proppa wykorzystano również w badaniach wybranych tekstów narracyjnych w szkole.
    There is a relationship between language, thought and reality. Language is the principal factor influencing the shape of our insight, judgements, knowledge and customs, while narrative enables people to tell others about the essence of the reality they are creating. Both the content and construction are important in a narrative, but it is construction that forms the basis for the considerations presented in this article. The study opens with definitions of such terms as the narrative text, narrative, narratology, specific nature of a narrative structure, as understood from the viewpoint of different sciences, and with the presentation of the foundations concerning the structural and functional analysis of narrative texts in the light of the theories coined by de Saussure, Rosner, Barthes and Todorov. Emphasis is laid on the analysis of narrative structures proposed by Propp, the author of general patterns for constructing stories. It is useful in studies on different systems of culture, including mass culture. Moreover, it often forms a basis for analyzing narratives in films, as well as other types of oral or written narratives. Propp’s morphology has also been applied to analyze some narratives used in school education.

    Na przestrzeni ostatnich stuleci dokonały się znaczące zmiany w sposobie pojmowania kategorii dziecka i dzieciństwa. W XVIII wieku nadano dzieciństwu status odrębnej fazy życia, w której istoty ludzkie uczą się, wzrastają i rozwijają. Badania prowadzone w paradygmacie psychologii rozwojowej, opartym na założeniu o ‘naturalności’ dzieciństwa i na przekonaniu o konieczności pojawienia się i normalności przebiegu rozwoju przyczyniły się do powstania uniwersalnej wizji dziecka i dzieciństwa. Wizja ta została zakwestionowana w badaniach prowadzonych w paradygmacie socjokulturowym, w którym dzieciństwo, rozumiane jako konstrukt społeczny, nie jest uznawane za naturalną i uniwersalną cechę ludzi, lecz za specyficzny komponent strukturalny i kulturowy wielu społeczeństw. Przedmiotem naszego zainteresowania uczyniłyśmy socjokulturowe interpretacje kategorii dzieci i dzieciństwa. Naszym celem jest zatem przedstawienie sposobów rozumienia dzieci i dzieciństwa w perspektywie socjokulturowej. W części wstępnej artykułu krótko omawiamy uniwersalną wizję rozwoju dziecka oraz uwagi krytyczne formułowane wobec tego modelu przez zwolenników socjokulturowego paradygmatu badań nad dzieciństwem. W głównej części artykułu ogniskujemy naszą uwagę na zagadnieniu socjokulturowego konstruowania obrazu dzieciństwa. Perspektywa socjokulturowa ujawnia wielość i różnorodność obrazów dzieci i dzieciństwa, konstruowanych przez dorosłych w różnych miejscach, kontekstach i przestrzeniach społecznych.
    Interpretations of the concepts of children and childhood have significantly changed over the past centuries. In the eighteenth century childhood was ascribed a status of a separate phase of human life in which human beings learn, grow and develop. Research conducted within the developmental psychology paradigm based on the notion of childhood’s ‘naturalness’ and on the necessity and normality of development has contributed to the emergence of a universal vision of the child and childhood. This vision has been challenged by the research conducted within the sociocultural paradigm in which childhood, understood as a social construction, is neither a natural nor a universal feature of human groups but appears as a specific structural and cultural component of many societies. We focused our attention on the sociocultural interpretations of the concepts of children and childhood. Our aim is, therefore, to show the ways in which children and childhood are understood in a sociocultural perspective. In the introductory part of the paper we briefly describe a universal vision of child development as well as the criticism it met from the supporters of the social childhood studies. In the main part of the article we focus our attention on the issue of social constructing of children and childhood. Sociocultural approach to childhood reveals a multitude and diversity of images of children and childhood constructed by adults in a variety of places, contexts and social spaces.

    This article revolves around the memory of a site, i.e. the past captured in sources, reported memories of witnesses of events and symbols. The examples of such places of memory examined here are the streets and squares on the UWM Kortowo campus. They consist of references to the past which has significance for contemporary times. The article consists of an introduction and two chapters. The introduction presents the rich history of Kortowo, spanning several centuries from the Old Prussian settlements to the establishment of the University of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn. Chapter 1 is dedicated to the history of the streets and squares on the Kortowo campus from the time when, to make the academic community’s life easier, the university authorities gave names to the streets on the campus, following the specific faculties’ suggestions. The streets were named after M. Oczapowski (an agronomist, theorist of agriculture, pioneer of agricultural experimentation), R. Prawocheński (an expert in animal husbandry), J. Licznerski (a pioneer of modern dairy science), K. Obitz (Doctor of veterinary medicine, a journalist, a social activist in Masuria), J. Hevelius (an astronomer from Gdansk), B. Dybowski (a biologist and traveller), C. Kanafojski (Professor of automation in agriculture). Chapter 2 presents short biographies of three of the seven street patrons: B. Dybowski, K. Obitz and R. Prawocheński, who are the most characteristic and multi-dimensional figures. The names of the streets reflect the memory of the scientific, social and personal achievements of these individuals, at the same time justifying their selection as patrons.

    The Sejm of the Polish Republic pronounced Feliks Nowowiejski to be a patron of the year 2016. In the justification statement, the Polish parliament stated that ‘this artist always stood on the side of the Polish nationality and Polish culture’. My research objective is to present a portrait of F. Nowowiejski’s family and to demonstrate its importance in the development of an individual and a society in the contemporary world.For F. Nowowiejski, family – next to his homeland and music – had the highest value. He came from a very large family (he was one of 14 siblings), and himself had four sons and a daughter. The composer’s family lived in Warmia and was subject to Germanisation efforts, aiming at the annihilation of Poland and Polish culture. Despite the persecutions, the Nowowiejski family did not renounce their identity and brought up their children in the atmosphere of Polish patriotism. The identity of Polish Warmiaks rested on two pillars: Polish nationality and Catholic religion, which were strengthened in response to the anti-Catholic and anti-Polish policy of Bismarck. F. Nowowiejski witnessed Poland’s regained independence in 1918 and in 1945; and he also participated in the plebiscite in Warmia and Masuria in 1920. Poland lost the plebiscite and Polish residents of Warmia had to renounce the hope of having their land incorporated into the Polish state. These events certainly shaped the Polish identity of F. Nowowiejski.
    Sejm RP ogłosił Feliksa Nowowiejskiego patronem roku 2016. W uzasadnieniu podano, że Nowowiejski zawsze stał po stronie polskości i polskiej kultury. Moim zamierzeniem badawczym jest przedstawienie obrazu rodziny F. Nowowiejskiego oraz pokazanie jej znaczenia dla rozwoju jednostki i współczesnego społeczeństwa. Rozważania dotyczące rodziny odwołują się do jej trzech generalnych wymiarów. Pierwszy dotyczy wychowania w duchu patriotycznym, ważnym dla kształtowania tożsamości narodowej i związku z małą ojczyzną. Drugi odnosi się do przemyśleń związanych z wychowaniem religijnym, w którym rodzina ma znaczenie,  i nie sposób tego przecenić. Trzeci obejmuje problemy w zakresie czerpania z zasobów kultury ludowej, stanowiących również nasze dziedzictwo. Te wymiary zajmowały ważne miejsce w życiu i twórczości F. Nowowiejskiego.F. Nowowiejski wywodził się z bardzo licznej rodziny (14 dzieci), sam miał czterech synów i jedną córkę. Rodzina F. Nowowiejskiego, pochodząca z Warmii, doświadczyła germanizacji prowadzącej do wyniszczenia Polski i polskiej kultury. Pomimo terroru nie poddała się i wychowała swoje dzieci w duchu patriotycznym. Fundamentem tożsamości warmińskiej było połączenie polskości i katolicyzmu, co stanowiło wynik antykatolickiej i antypolskiej polityki Otto von Bismarcka. F. Nowowiejski był świadkiem odzyskania przez Polskę niepodległości w 1918 i 1945 r., a także plebiscytu na Warmii i Mazurach w 1920 r. Przegrany plebiscyt unicestwił nadzieje mieszkańców Warmii na ponowną przynależność do państwa polskiego. Wydarzenia te niewątpliwie ukształtowały polskość F. Nowowiejskiego.

    In this article, I raise issues connected with the history of Polish diary writing since the Middle Ages until the early 20th century. I discuss the process and directions of establishing diary writing a separate branch of historical literature. Texts of historical nature (memoirs or diaries) were referred to by their authors as stories, notes of events, diaries or a course of life. Their origin can be traced back to medieval chronicles describing events that involved the Polish nation, in which the authors shyly included scattered and miniscule autobiographical mentions. Diary writing in Poland began to assume shape as a genre at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. There was a growing number of diaries in which the reality was described with a bias. This was a manifestation of the specific ‘zeitgeist’: the commonplace belief in the historical importance and meaning of the events witnessed or attended by the author, making them worth describing for future generations. Owing to vivid and expressive historical accounts, the 17th century expansive growth of diary writing entered the realm of fine literature. The 18th century brought changes in the methodology of historical sciences, as reflected by the prevalence of memoirs over diaries, and the perception of a memoir as a form of autobiography. The development of diary writing at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries was associated with surmounting the limitations of the class system and the emergence of a modern nation as a socio-cultural structure. In this historical setting, plebeian diaries, authored by ordinary people, were gaining in popularity. Diaries were written by representatives of all classes and social strata, be it aristocracy, urban-based intelligentsia originating from nobility, peasants or workers. In the first half of the 20th century, in addition to diaries written by individuals, practised for centuries, the way was paved for mass diary writing. Writing plebeian diaries was encouraged by scholars and editors of journals. At the same time, an institution of collective and competition diary writing emerged, in which the attitude to history was similar to that advocated by representatives of the Annales schools, namely history seen in connection with everyday life.

    This study has been devoted to creative attitudes represented by 6-7-year old children, evaluated by the creative and re-constructive attitudes rating scale (SPTO)1. The central focus was to relate differences in attitudes among children commencing their education at the age of 6 to those who had started their school attendance before the reform (at the age of 7). An attempt was made to answer the question whether pupils differing in the year of birth, joined within one school form, would generate any disruption of their potential creativity. A complementary issue was to evaluate the level of creative attitudes along the dimorphic pattern.

    Prezentowany artykuł ma charakter ogólnych rozważań związanych z historiografią. Zarysowano tendencje społeczno-kulturowe współczesnego świata mające znaczenie dla rozumienia historiografii i edukacji historycznej. Wychodząc od modernistycznego podejście do nauki i edukacji historycznej analizowano czynniki mające wpływ na jego załamanie i zwrócenie się w stronę historiografii niekonwencjonalnej. Konsekwencją tego zwrotu stało się odkrywanie nowych obszarów badawczych oraz konstruowanie innych rodzajów narracji. W miejsce metanarracji, posługujących się wielkimi pojęciami, powstawało pisarstwo historyczne typu: historia kultury, historia feministyczna, historia postkolonialna, historiografia multimedialna czy mikrohistoria, mówiąca o rzeczach mniej „ważnych” w skali makro, ale istotnych dla jakiejś grupy społecznej lub dla pojedynczych ludzi.
    The following article contains general reflections on historiography, that is on what is written and said about historical times. An outline of contemporary social and cultural tendencies which are important for the comprehension of historiography and history teaching has been given. From the modernist approach to history as a science and subject in education, the author proceeds with her analysis towards the factors which have undermined modernism and contributed to the birth of unconventional historiography. As a result, new realms of knowledge have opened up and other types of narration have been created. Meta-narratives employing grand concepts have been replaced by other types of historical writing, for example history of culture, feminist history, post-colonial history, multi-media history or micro-history, which all speak about issues ‘less important’ on a macro-scale but essential for a given social group or even an individual.

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest podjęcie ważnego zagadnienia, jakim jest pozaszkolna edukacja dziecka, wykraczająca poza obowiązujący system szkolnictwa. Edukacja domowa przebiega w środowisku domowym, a nauczycielami są zazwyczaj rodzice, którzy treści nauczania, metody, środki dostosowują do indywidualnych możliwości dziecka. Edukacja domowa stanowi odzwierciedlenie potrzeb i dążeń wychowawczych współczesnych rodziców. Aby sprostać temu wyzwaniu, rodzice potrzebują i poszukują wsparcia w swoich działaniach edukacyjnych. Nie zawsze możliwe jest uzyskanie bezpośredniej pomocy w obrębie środowiska lokalnego, szczególnie od osób kompetentnych czy też zorientowanych w specyfice funkcjonowania rodziny w ramach tzw. „edukacji domowej”. Bezradni rodzice próbują zatem uzyskać pomoc na portalach społecznościowych, na przykład od grup skupiających rodziców na Facebooku. Uczestnictwo w takich grupach staje się źródłem „e-wsparcia”: informacyjnego, emocjonalnego, czasem też instrumentalnego. Celem badań jest określenie skali zjawiska, jakim jest poszukiwanie i uzyskiwanie przez rodziców wsparcia za pośrednictwem Internetu. Przeanalizowane zostały posty z pięciu grup na Facebooku, które mają zróżnicowany status oraz liczbę członków: dwie grupy otwarte ogólnopolskie, dwie grupy zamknięte (ogólnopolska i lokalna) oraz jedna grupa tajna. Liczba członków grup jest zróżnicowana. Największe są grupy otwarte (od ok. 2000 do 9000 członków), mniejsze – zamknięte (od ok. 150 do 1000 członków), najmniejsze – tajne (w przypadku badanej grupy było to 15 osób). W poszczególnych grupach zostały przeanalizowane posty średnio z sześciu miesięcy, z przełomu 2015 i 2016 roku.
    The aim of the article is to touch on the important issue that is children’s out-of-school education, which goes beyond the existing education system. Home education takes place in the domestic environment, and the teachers are usually the parents, who adapt the curriculum, methods and means to the individual abilities of the child. Home education is a reflection of the needs and educational aspirations of modern parents. To meet this challenge, parents need, and look for, support in their educational activities. Direct help is not always available in the local community, particularly from competent persons versed in the specifics of family functioning within the framework of home education. Helpless parents try, therefore, to find help on social networks, for example in parents’ groups on Facebook. Participation in such groups becomes a key source of informational, emotional and sometimes instrumental e-support.The aim of the study is to determine the scale of the phenomenon that is parents searching for and obtaining assistance online. The subject of analysis were posts from five Facebook groups which have a diverse membership and number of members: two open nationwide groups, two closed groups (nationwide and local) and one secret group. The number of members in these groups varies: the open groups are the largest, with approx. 2,000 to 9,000 members, the closed groups are smaller, with approx. 150 to 1,000 members, and the secret groups are the smallest (the group analysed had 15 members). Posts from 6 months on average were analysed in each group, from the turn of 2015 and 2016.
