In this article results of studies on cracks formation susceptibility in braze-welded joints of thin aluminum sheets and double-sided zinc galvanized steel sheets for car body parts made by laser brazing with high power diode laser ROFIN DL 020 and CMT MIG-brazing, with filler material in form of powder and wire accordingly, were presented. Optimal welding parameters were determined by visual acceptance criteria. On joints made with optimal parameters further examinations were carried. Results of macro- and microscopic metallographic examinations, structural roentgenography, EDS microanalysis and hardness tests were presented. Causes of brittle intermetallic Fe-Al phases formation in Al-matrix filler metal in dissimilar aluminum – zinc plated carbon steel joints were pointed.

Environmental dusts of urban and industrial origin are one of the most important factors responsible for air and soil pollution - mainly because of heavy metals content. In this work a dust collected from the acoustic barriers of E-77 expressway (Poland) has been investigated. Chemical analysis was performed by means of atomic absorption spectrometer with flame atomization (F-AAS). Fe, Al and Zn metals dominate in the investigated road dusts. Mossbauer spectra collected at room temperature enabled the identification of several iron-containing phases in the dust. Some traces of hematite and magnetite have been found as well as alfa-Fe phase in ferromagnetic state. A significant component could be interpreted as pure iron in paramagnetic state. The dominating doublet in the spectrum of high quadrupole splitting could correspond to iron carbonates. Complementary measurements of low-field AC magnetic susceptibility confirmed a different metal content in the road dust samples collected from different altitudes of acoustic barriers.

This analysis was performed as a part of the palaeomagnetic project focused on the reconstruction of the palaeogeographic position of the Svalbard Archipelago and adjacent crustal units (European Arctic) in the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic. Three rock formations - Cambrian, Devonian and Carboniferous were sampled in the area of Hornsund, southern Spitsbergen. The main aim of the presented study is to identify ferromagnetic minerals (sensu lato) - the carriers of the natural remanent magnetisation in the investigated rocks. A wide range of magnetic methods were used: the Lowrie tests, unblocking temperatures determinations and the measurement of coercivity spectra as well as the Mössbauer studies. In Devonian and Carboniferous samples all applied methods indicate the domination of the hematite natural remanent magnetisation carrier. In Cambrian rocks magnetic measurements reveal a mixture of ferromagnetic (sensu lato) minerals with varying coercivities and unblocking temperatures. The Mössbauer data improve the identification, suggesting that in Cambrian rocks the carrier of the dominating natural remanent magnetisation component is maghemite.

Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect were applied to investigate hyperfine interactions and macroscopic magnetic properties of Finemet-type thin films. Phase analysis as well as compositional evolution of hyperfine parameters and coercivity was performed in the range of chromium percentage 0 ≤ x ≤ 14. Essential differences in structure and hyperfine parameters were found for films of different chromium concentration. Coercivity shows non-monotonic dependence with minimal value at x = 5.

In this work hyperfine fields of two-phase nanocrystalline Fe72Cu1.5Nb4Si13.5B9 alloys were studied in order to verify the existence of surface effects. To obtain a series of nanocrystalline samples with small grains of different sizes, a special non- -isothermal annealing procedure of an initially amorphous ribbon was applied. In the case of samples with a significant amount of crystallites, a high field (about 27.5 T) component of continuous part of the hyperfine field distribution was found that could be attributed to boundary regions between the grains and rest of the sample. The existence of the surface effects was confirmed in the magnetostrictive experiment.

Magnetic and structural studies were performed on $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ material. The samples (disk-shaped, diameter: 10 mm, thickness: 2.5 mm) were fabricated by compaction of powder under pressure of 800 MPa for 5 min at temperatures 300-600°C. The powder was obtained by milling of $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ alloy swarfs in high-energy planetary mill. The milling time varied from 1 h to 40 h. In the course of milling process the mean size of alloy pieces was decreasing from about 0.5 mm to 0.05 mm (scanning electron microscopy), which provided more compact structure after compression. The annealing process during compaction strongly reduces a coercive field of the samples. Parameters of conversion electron Mössbauer spectra are almost the same for all samples, which points to not significant changes of atomic and magnetic order after milling and compacting.

The investigations of iron-containing phases existing in fly ashes were performed using transmission Mössbauer spectrometry. The examined samples of fly ashes were collected from different coal combustion systems, that is, stoker-fired boiler in municipal heating plant and pulverized coal boiler in power plant. Several phases are identifi ed in the samples: iron oxides, paramagnetic aluminosilicate glass with Fe3+ ions and Al2O4- -type spinel with Fe2+ ions. It was pointed out that proportions of contents of phases strongly depend not only on the combustion temperature but also on the way of ash collection.

Several samples of dusts from steel and coke plants (collected mostly with electro filters) were subjected to the investigation of content of mineral phases in their particles. Additionally, sample of bog iron ore and metallurgical slurry was studied. Next, the magnetic susceptibility of all the samples was determined, and investigations of iron-containing phases were performed using transmission Mössbauer spectrometry. The values of mass-specific magnetic susceptibility varied in a wide range: from 59 to above 7000 × 10−8 m3kg−1. The low values are determined for bog iron ore, metallurgical slurry, and coke dusts. The extremely high was obtained for metallurgical dusts. The Mössbauer spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns point to the presence of the following phases containing iron: hematite and oxidized magnetite (in coke and metallurgical dusts as well as metallurgical slurry), traces of magnetite fi ne grains fraction (in metallurgical dusts), amorphous glassy silicates with paramagnetic Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, traces of pyrrhotite (in coke dusts), α-Fe and nonstoichiometric wüstite (in metallurgical slurry), as well as ferrihydrite nanoparticles (in bog iron ore). For individual samples of metallurgical dusts, the relative contributions of Fe2+/3+ ions in octahedral B sites and Fe2+ ions in tetrahedral A sites in magnetite spinel structure differs considerably.

The introduction of new reinforcing materials continues to be investigated to improve the final behaviour of AMCs as well as to avoid some drawbacks of using ceramics as reinforcement. The present work investigates the structure, properties and ability of joining aluminium EN-AW 6061 matrix composite materials reinforced with Ti3Al particles by resistance butt welding as well as composite materials produced by mechanical milling, powder metallurgy and hot extrusion techniques. Mechanically milled and extruded composites show finer and better distribution of reinforcement particles, which leads to better mechanical properties of the obtained products. Finer microstructure improves mechanical properties of obtained composites. The hardness increases twice in the case of mechanically milled composites also, a higher reinforcement content results in higher particle dispersion hardening, for 15 wt.% of intermetallics reinforcement concentration composites reach about 400 MPa UTS. Investigation results of joints show that best hardness and tensile properties of joints can be achieved by altering soft conditions of butt welding process e.g. current flow time 1.2 s and current 1400 A. To improve mechanical properties of butt welding joints age hardening techniques can also be used.

Amorphous and nanocrystalline FINEMET-type alloys with vanadium addition up to 7 at% were investigated by the MÖssbauer spectroscopy and magnetic methods. The outcomes evidence alterations in grain structure, although the main effect is related to the changes in intergranular phase. This induces diminution of mean hyperfine field, saturation induction and Curie temperature as well as the increase in coercivity.

In this work, a ⁵⁷Fe conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry and X-ray diffraction have been utilized in order to investigate the structural and magnetic order in 500 nm thick Ni-Zn ferrite films deposited on Si(100) substrate by laser ablation. Considering the contributions of the conversion electron Mössbauer subspectra corresponding to the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites, the spinel inversion parameter in [Zn_{x}Fe_{1-x}]^{A}[Ni_{1-x}Fe_{1+x}]^{B}O₄ films has been estimated. The hyperfine field (B_{hf}) values in the investigated Ni-Zn ferrites thin films are about 5-8% smaller than those of bulk ferrites, which could be a sign of thermal magnetic relaxations due to the size effects. The distribution of hyperfine magnetic field directions was found to be affected by perpendicular anisotropy.

This paper presents the use of magnetometry to study pollution of soil and air. The magnetic method consists in determining the magnetic properties of pollution floating in the air and deposited in the soil, the leaves of trees or household dust in apartments. The method based on the fact that the magnetic particles present in the pollution are associated with heavy metals and toxic trace elements harmful to human health. The study of traffic pollution was focused on the spatial distribution of pollution in soils along roads in relation to the distance from the edge of road, the area topography and the factors affecting the speed of motor transport (traffic lights, traffic jams, road narrowing, etc.). The study of air pollution allowed to determine the seasonal correlation between pollution deposited on filters and meteorological parameters such as temperature, humidity and precipitation. Detailed analysis of magnetic susceptibility as an indicator of pollution revealed increasing trend with temperature and absolute humidity in the cold months of the year and the decreasing trend in the warm months. Similar correlations were not observed between the magnetic susceptibility and the precipitation. The second part presents a study of indoor air pollution based on measurements of dust collected in apartments in different districts of Warsaw. It was found that floor on which dust was taken did not affect the amount and composition of pollution in opposite to vehicle traffic, housing density and way of ventilation. Study shows that the most polluted apartments are in the Center, in the district of Praga Południe, Mokotów and Ursynów located close to the narrow streets with the large vehicle traffic and poor ventilation. Correlation of the magnetic susceptibility with the concentration of heavy metals in household dust is the base for use of susceptibility for monitoring indoor air pollution.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the mean annual precipitation in the mountain river catchment area, in the period between 1984-2012. Data on daily rainfall totals was obtained from IMGW PIB in Warsaw, and it came from two weather stations: one in Nowy Sącz, and the other in Krynica. It has been demonstrated that during the multi-year period covered by the study, there were variations in terms of precipitation levels; the year 1987 should be considered e¬tremely dry, while 2010, extremely wet - in the latter year, extreme rainfall was noted. In the analysed multi-year period, within the total annual precipitation, rain dominated during the first half year, which undoubtedly affects the hydrological regime of the Kamienica river.
Celem pracy jest ocena kształtowania się charakterystyk opadu na obszarze górskiej rzeki Kamienicy w wieloleciu 1984-2012. Dane dotyczące sum dobowych opadów pozyskano z IMGW PIB w Warszawie i pochodziły z dwóch stacji opadowych: Nowy Sącz i Krynica. Wykazano, że w badanym wieloleciu występowały zróżnicowane lata pod względem wilgotności; za szczególnie suchy należy uznać 1987 rok, a wilgotny to 2010 rok, gdyż w tym roku występowała największa liczba opadów ekstremalnych. W badanym wieloleciu w sumie rocznej opadów dominowały opady z półrocza letniego, co niewątpliwie wpływa na reżim hydrologiczny rzeki Kamienicy.

Structural changes in Finemet based alloys invoked by germanium replacement for silicon were investigated using the X-ray diffraction, the X-ray absorption spectroscopy and the Mössbauer spectroscopy. Ge substitution preserves a nanostructural character of annealed samples at temperature 550°C; specifically the formation of a $DO_3$-type with about 19 at.% of (Si,Ge) was confirmed. The mean size of nanocrystals was estimated to be about 7 nm.

We propose a simple model for temperature evolution of magnetic hyperfine field distribution of spherical bcc Fe nanoparticles. We performed mean field approximation calculations of mean spin value in each spherical shell of nanoparticle. Considering magnetic hyperfine field values reported for iron thin films we predicted possible values of hyperfine fields in the internal and surface region of the particles as a function of temperature.
