The subject of the research are 5 spearheads from the villages: Leszczków, Rytwiany, Szczeka and Lubienia, in the Świętokrzyskie voivodeship. The artefacts, apart from the one from Szczeka, were found by accident, probably in the course of illegal searches with the use of metal detectors. The spearheads should be dated to the younger Pre-Roman period and the Roman period. They probably come from the destroyed cremation graves from the unknown so far cemeteries of the Przeworsk culture.

Opis:
The article discusses the legal, organizational and financial limitations which prevent the effective protection of archaeological monuments. A particular attention was devoted to the definition of archaeological monument, included in the Act on the protection and the guardianship of monuments, which seems to be too broad, as well as to the forms and manners of protection of archaeological monuments stipulated in that act, threats to them and real methods of counteracting them. In fact, the passive, reserve-type protection (preserving archaeological monuments in situ), in spite of the theoretical possibilities given in that scope in the Act on the protection and the guardianship of monuments, is very difficult to execute and can only be implemented in some cases. The basic form is active protection – rescue surveys conducted in advance. An issue in that scope are the provisions of the law, which clearly define the rules of financing only the rescue surveys which are carried out on sites threatened due to construction works and earthworks and fail to regulate, for example, the financing of rescue research in case of other threats or accidental discoveries of previously unknown sites. The attention was also drawn to the issues of protection of archaeological monuments which result from the unclear provisions of the Act on the protection and the guardianship of monuments and its inconsistency with other laws.

The paper presents two important complexes of archaeological sites in Czermno and Gródek in Lublin Voivodeship. Their character, research history, state of preservation, ownership status, threats, state of archaeological research and current forms of heritage protection are discussed. The conclusions of the study indicate the need for further archaeological research of an interdisciplinary nature as well as the necessary actions related to preventing further destruction, including changes in the scope of legal protection. The paper ends with the postulate of establishing the “Czermno-Gródek Archeological Open-air Museum” an organizational unit, which would be responsible for the protection and preservation of both archaeological complexes, and would coordinate further research focusing on these sites.

The article discusses legal regulations concerning archaeological research and searching for artefacts, including the requirements for issuing the relevant permits, funding for archaeological rescue excavations, and the issue of ownership of archaeological artefacts. The paper points out the inadequacy of many such regulations and their internal contradictions and inconsistencies. The proposed changes concern, among others: simplification of the procedure for issuing permits for archaeological research and searching for artefacts, restoration of the requirement to provide information on the persons who are to conduct the research in archaeological research permit applications, and increasing the possibility of rejecting such applications by Voivodeship Heritage Protection Officers, as well as the rules for archaeological research funding. Several changes to regulations on the ownership of artefacts, including those found during research and exploration, are suggested.

Opis:
The term stećak (pl. stećci) is used in the Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian languages to refer to mediaeval monolithic tombstones from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well from the nearby territories of Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. Their number is estimated at between 50,000 and almost 70,000. The earliest preserved stećci come from the 12th century, whereas the latest date to the beginning of the 16th century. Their forms vary, but most often they have the shape of a slab, vertical or horizontal monolith, or stylized cross. Some of them have images – engraved or carved in low relief – representing, e.g., weaponry, people, animals, genre scenes (hunting, fighting, dancing), various symbols and ornaments, and – very seldom – short inscriptions. In the past, they were attributed to the followers of the Bogomil heresy or the stock-breeding Vlachs, they were also regarded as original products of the mediaeval Bosnian population – created independently from external influences and models, as a sign of the revival of the traditional Slavic pagan beliefs dating back to the times of the Indo European community. According to the currently prevalent assumption, stećci – with their forms and symbols – fit the broad trend of European sepulchral art referring to the ethos of chivalry and Christianity, but at the same time they were a means used to manifest the distinctive character of the local elites and groups aspiring to be included in them. The images present on stećci – especially genre scenes and heraldic motifs – are an invaluable source of information about the culture and life of local elites in mediaeval Bosnia.

Opis:
This article deals with the interpretation of toponyms and archaeological materials from early medieval Lesser Poland that may be associated with the Hungarians or the Khazar Kabars. So far, they have most often been interpreted as traces of invasions by Hungarians – nomads (single monuments) or the operations of watchtowers they established to control the passes through the Carpathians and subjugated the local Slavic population (the so-called Old Magyar cemetery in Przemyśl) in the late 9th and1st half of the 10th century. It could have been related to their participation in the armed squads of the Piasts or the Rurikiviks, the activities of Hungarian merchants or prisoner-of-war settlements. The dating and interpreting the so-called Old Magyar cemetery in Przemyśl remains an open issue until it is fully developed and the results published.

Opis:
It is debatable to what extent so-called grave goods (items intentionally deposited in burials) reflect the actual level of prosperity of people inhumed in early mediaeval graves. The same applies to the types of the burial features in which they were inhumed. Whether the deceased were supplied with particular items or not – and if so, what kind of goods they were – might have resulted, for example, from the extent to which Christianity (having a unifying influence on funerary rituals) was accepted, as well as from local customs or even family traditions, the actual wealth of the buried people and individual decisions as to whether their opulence should be manifested or not. In Sandomierz, between the end of the 10th and the middle of the 12th century, there were at least three non churchyard row cemeteries. We know 20 other burial sites of this type located in the radius of 20 km from the town. An analysis of materials found in them (grave goods) indicated that in the discussed time the wealth of Sandomierz residents was similar to that of people living in the neighbouring settlements dated to the same period. This assumption, however, is not necessarily correct, because the lack of considerable differences between grave inventories might have resulted from local burial customs followed at that time. Another question is whether such customs were a continuation of earlier local traditions or whether they were shaped by the embracing of elements of Christian funerary rituals. Finally, it is also possible that they resulted from both factors.

Opis:
Rudnik on the San River is an example of one of the first private foundations of a town in Sandomierz Land, which was to become the administrative and economic centre of a small estate consisting of several villages and at the same time, due to its location by the Sandomierz– Przemyśl route and near the navigable San, it also took part in regional trade. The size and spatial arrangement of town reflected its needs in this context. Here we can see one of the first attempts in this area to apply the Renaissance concept of a private town combined with the owners seat. Full realization of this concept, as well as the development of the town in line with initial expectations, were hampered by frequent changes of ownership, their limited financial resources, competition from other private towns, and finally warfare in the second half of the seventeenth century with the consequent economic crisis.

settlement of foreign tribes and foreign ethnic groups
Opis:
By the end of the 10th century, the area of Opatów and Sandomierz was probably inhabited by a small tribe whose name has not been recorded in written sources. The establishment of a gord in Zawichost Podgórze before the end of the 9th century coupled with the emergence of a local cluster of pyre kurgan grave fields may be evidence of the arrival of new settlers from an area east of the Vistula. Inclusion of the Sandomierz area into the domain of the Wielkopolska Polans in the late 10th century resulted in disappearance of the existing tribal settlement structures which were replaced by new ones. This was related to the arrival to this area of individuals and groups representing the new Piast dynasty rule who came from other parts of the country or even from abroad. They included warriors from the ducal team, craftsmen, merchants as well as settlers relocated voluntarily or by force, possibly captives. As they represented different cultural traditions, their appearance has been well documented in archaeological sources. It also seems to be confirmed in toponymy. On top of the biggest number of Wielkopolska newcomers from the heart of the Piast dynasty domain, in the vicinity of Sandomierz and Opatów there could have also operated merchants related to the broadly defined Scandinavian and Russian culture as well as nomadic tribes, most probably Hungarians. The latter could have arrived as warriors, members of the ducal team, merchants or captives.

In 2005, rescue excavations were carried out at site 22 (discovered a year earlier) in Głazów. Their aim was to record and explore the features visible in the high balk. Two of the examined features were the remains of smoking chambers (pits), and the third pit could be of an utility function. Based on the pottery sherds found inside, these features should be dated between the beginning of the 9th and the end of the 10th century. However, in the arable layer of the ground and on the surface of the site, there were mainly fragments of ceramics determined to the 12th – 13th centuries. This dating indicates the two-phase settlement of the early medieval site 22 in Głazów: the first phase – 9th – 10th (or the beginning of the 11th century); the second phase – 12th – 13th centuries. The village Głazów, which exists today, is a direct continuation of the settlement of the second phase.

The part of Opatów situated on the northern side of the Opatówka river is called Żmigród. This is the area of the oldest early medieval settlement. It is the location of e.g.: a pagan place of the Slavic dragon deity (Żmij), a hillfort from the 11th-13th centuries and the first municipal commune. Archaeological research has confirmed the existence of an early-municipal settlement here before the end of the 13th century. In 2016, at the so-called Burgstall, which is a part of Żmigród, a car park covering an area of 35 acres was illegally constructed, destroying part of historic substance of the archaeological site. In 2020, monument preservation services managed to force the owner of the site to close down the car park and caused the further use of the Burgstall area as a square, in a way which would not pose a threat to the archaeological monument.
