Opis:
We consider a one-dimensional two-temperatures thermoelastic model. The corresponding variational problem leads to a coupled system which is written in terms of the mechanical velocity, the temperature speed and the inductive temperature. An existence and uniqueness result is recalled. Then, fully discrete approximations are introduced by using the finite element method and the implicit Euler scheme. A priori error estimates are proved and the linear convergence of the approximations is deduced under suitable additional regularity conditions. Finally, some numerical simulations are shown to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed algorithm and the behavior of the discrete energy.

Increasing the presence of non-conventional clean energy sources in Electrical Power Systems (EPS) is a global strategic goal. Particularly, photovoltaic systems are attractive due to their versatility, low maintenance cost, easy installation, noiselessness, etc. However, the integration of photovoltaic systems into EPS increases the necessary regulation actions performed by system generators due to stochastic fluctuations of solar radiation, especially on cloudy days. Even using complex models that consider many variables, solar irradiation and its corresponding photovoltaic power generation are difficult variables to forecast with accuracy in cloudy day scenarios. To address this problem, Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have been proposed as a solution to mitigate the variability of photovoltaic generation, which reduce the need to use traditional spinning reserves and provide auxiliary grid services. The BESS selection required to mitigate photovoltaic generation is directly related to the worst-case daily variability of photovoltaic generation in the short term. This paper proposes a practical estimation of daily perspective photo voltage solar generation curve in Electrical Power Systems.

Opis:
In the last few years, the Quebrada de Los Colorados Formation has become an important middle Eocene fossiliferous unit in Northwestern Argentina. In this unit, the South American native ungulates were until now only represented by the order Notoungulata, including one family of Typotheria and three of Toxodontia. In this contribution, we present a new faunistic assemblage of South American native ungulates, collected from outcrops of the Quebrada de Los Colorados Formation at Los Cardones National Park, Calchaquí Valleys, Salta Province (Argentina). This new assemblage is constituted by the following taxa: litoptern Didolodontidae cf. Ernestokokenia sp., Astrapotheria indet., and notoungulate Notostylopidae Homalostylops sp., a ?Homalostylops sp., typothere “Oldfieldthomasiidae” Colbertia falui sp. nov., Colbertia lumbrerense, and Colbertia sp. and toxodont “Notohippidae” Pampahippus secundus. Colbertia falui sp. nov. differs from the other species of Colbertia by the following features: lower cheek teeth with both more labially angular and oblique trigonid; lower premolars more labio-lingually compressed; with proportionally larger trigonid, and shorter talonid; ectoflexid transversally deeper; lower molars with a more developed paralophid, and more expanded metalophid and entoconid; the latter is located in a more mesial position, being closer to the metaconid; deep and lingually narrower talonid basin; disto-lingual sulcus transversally shallower; more developed cingulids; and m3 with less lingually projected hypoconulid. This new fauna markedly increases the taxonomic richness known for this formation since it includes the first mention of notostylopids, “oldfieldthomasiids”, litoptern didolodontids, and astrapotheres. With the current evidence, we postulate an ungulate migration from Patagonia to Northwestern Argentina during the Eocene. We also hypothesize that the observed taxonomic differences among the Quebrada de Los Colorados, Geste, and Lumbrera formations are more probably associated to orogenic factors that have regulated the faunal dynamic in Northwestern Argentina during the Paleogene than to a differential sampling effort or taphonomic biases.

Dinocephalians (Therapsida), some of the earliest amniotes to have evolved large body size, include the carnivorous Anteosauria and mostly herbivorous Tapinocephalia. Whilst the palaeoneurology of the Tapinocephalia has been investigated in Moschognathus whaitsi, that of the Anteosauria remains completely unknown. Here we used X-ray micro-Computed Tomography to study, for the first time, the palaeoneurology of Anteosaurus magnificus. Compared to Moschognathus, we reconstruct Anteosaurus as an agile terrestrial predator based on the enlarged fossa for the floccular lobe of the cerebellum and semicircular canals of the inner ear. A major difference between the two genera resides in the orientation of the braincase, as indicated by the angle between the long axis of the skull and the plane of the lateral semicircular canal. This angle is 25° in Anteosaurus, whereas it is 65° in Moschognathus, which suggests that the braincase of the latter was remodelled as an adaptation to head-butting. This is consistent with less cranial pachyostosis and the retention of a large canine in Anteosauria, which suggests that dentition may have been used for intraspecific fighting and display in addition to trophic interactions. The evolution of a thick skull, horns, and bosses in tapinocephalids parallels the evolutionary reduction of the canine, which lead to a shift of the agonistic function from the mouth to the skull roof, as observed in extant social ungulates. Similarly, tapinocephalians may have developed complex social behaviour.

Opis:
Sperm whales (Physeteroidea) include today only two genera of morphologically disparate odontocetes: the largest toothed whale known (Physeter macrocephalus) and small sized forms (Kogia spp.). In contrast, their fossil record indicates a high diversity for the group during the Miocene, with over 20 species recognized. Miocene marine sediments from Patagonia (Argentina) record this diversity, including at least five species. Among them, Preaulophyseter gualichensis, from the Miocene of Gran Bajo del Gualicho Formation, has been one of the most enigmatic. Despite the fragmentary nature of the type and referred materials (isolated teeth and periotics), which casts some doubts on its validity, this species has not been revised since its original description. In this contribution, we re-describe the materials referred to P. gualichensis, revise the taxonomic status of the species and evaluate the phylogenetic signal of ear bones among Physeteroidea. Our results indicate that the physeteroid tympano-periotic complex morphology is poorly diagnostic at the species level. Intraspecific variation (including ontogeny and sexual dimorphism) and/or taphonomic processes cannot be ruled out as the causes of the minor differences observed among specimens. We suggest that sperm whale tympano-periotics retain many plesiomorphic characters and are diagnostic only between kogiids and non-kogiid physeteroids. Based on the fragmentary and isolated state of the studied specimens, and the lack of diagnostic characters in both teeth and periotics, we consider P. gualichensis as nomen dubium and we re-assign the referred specimens as Physeteroidea indet. A conservative morphology of the tympano-periotic and, to a lesser extent, the nasal complex in sperm whales, might result from the morpho-functional constraints imposed by a highly specialized but successful echolocation system.

China aster and gaillardia are flowering plants with high economic importance in floriculture. In the present investigation, response of China aster and gaillardia seedlings to inoculation with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae + the plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus sonorensis was studied by growing in multipots (pro trays). The germination percentage and plant growth parameters: length of shoots, roots and whole seedlings, stem diameter, biovolume index, plant strength, vigor index, dry weight and nutrient uptake, were analyzed 60 days after sowing. The microbial parameters, mycorrhizal root colonization and spore count, and the population of B. sonorensis in the substrate were also determined. The results brought out that growth of inoculated seedlings was significantly improved as compared to uninoculated seedlings. Based on the plant growth and microbial parameters studied, it was concluded that inoculating the substrate in pro trays with the microbial consortium results in producing vigorously growing seedlings.

Opis:
Spectroscopy has become one of the most used non-invasive methods to detect plant diseases before symptoms are visible. In this study it was possible to characterize the spectral variation in leaves of Solanum lycopersicum L. infected with Fusarium oxysporum during the incubation period. It was also possible to identify the relevant specific wavelengths in the range of 380–1000 nm that can be used as spectral signatures for the detection and discrimination of vascular wilt in S. lycopersicum. It was observed that inoculated tomato plants increased their reflectance in the visible range (Vis) and decreased slowly in the near infrared range (NIR) measured during incubation, showing marked differences with plants subjected to water stress in the Vis/NIR. Additionally, three ranges were found in the spectrum related to infection by F. oxysporum (510–520 nm, 650–670 nm, 700–750 nm). Linear discriminant models on spectral reflectance data were able to differentiate between tomato varieties inoculated with F. oxysporum from healthy ones with accuracies higher than 70% 9 days after inoculation. The results showed the potential of reflectance spectroscopy to discriminate plants inoculated with F. oxysporum from healthy ones as well as those subjected to water stress in the incubation period of the disease.

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, an insect of the order Hemiptera which attacks more than 600 species of plants, is one of the most important agricultural pests around the world. The insecticidal Cry proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are useful biological pesticides, and some are toxic to Hemipteran insects. In this study, Colombian native isolates of Bt were functionally characterized at molecular and biological levels. The strains contained between one and five different crystal shapes: round, triangular, amorphous, bipyramidal and squared. The strains presented between three to seven bands of proteins in their electrophoretic pattern that were organized into six groups according to their possible biological activity on insect pests. Cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cry1Ac, cry1B and cry1C genes were identified for PCR in the different Bt isolates. Bioassays were performed on tomato leaves whose surface was spread with 3 µg · ml−1 crude extract of Bt toxins. Second instar larvae of whitefly, which were placed on top of leaves and exposed to the toxins for 7 days, exhibited mortalities from 18 to 69%. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of ZBUJTL39, Bt kurstaki HD1 and ZCUJTL9 strains were 1.83, 1.85 and 2.16 μg · ml−1, respectively (p < 0.05). These results show that the native Bt strain ZBUJTL39, which contained the genes cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cryCa and cryBa could eventually be used for the development of an integrated management program together with other tools for the control of B. tabaci.

The use of terahertz-based techniques has grown very fast since they are capable of performing evaluations at molecular level, being very suitable for the analysis of biological samples and biomaterials such as those for contact lenses. These biomaterials are continuously evolving to enhance the lens wearer’s comfort by improving their hydration state and surface wettability. Therefore, this study examines a novel terahertz system for the assessment of the temporary in vitro dehydration of hydrogel contact lenses, which provides a new index to assess their state of hydration. Several conventional and silicone hydrogel contact lenses and lens care solutions were analysed. Traditional methods such as the gravimetric determination of water content and the measurement of the static contact angle were also carried out for the validation of the developed system. The dehydration rate measurements of contact lenses obtained with the proposed system correlated with the values provided by traditional methods. As a whole, conventional hydrogel contact lenses exhibited the lowest values for dehydration rate. The tests conducted on various solutions showed a correlation between the wetting action of the solution and the dehydration rate of the contact lens material.

Prolonged running has been popularized globally in recent decades. This study was aimed to reveal information about foot morphology, shoe comfort and plantar loading among recreational heel-strike runners. Methods: Twenty-six runners participated in foot morphology, perceived scores and peak pressure tests after 10- and 20-km track running. The foot morphology was measured using a 3D foot scanner, perceived scores were recorded using a visual analogue scale and plantar pressure was measured via insole plantar pressure measurement system. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The heel midsole materials properties were measured before and after 20 km. Significant changes were observed in ball width and girth, arch height and foot volume. The perceived scores showed significance in overall, forefoot and heel comfort, arch support and forefoot width. Peak pressure to the heel, medial mid-foot and metatarsal greatly increased. The first metatarsal showed consecutive increase from static to 10 km, and 20 km, while big-toe showed a decrease. Conclusions: The morphology variations and forefoot loading concentration may lead to discomfort and possibly imply dermatological problems and metatarsal bone stress, particularly on the first metatarsal. Combining changes of heel midsole property, knowledge of foot shape, shoe perception and plantar pressure is of great value for recreational long-distance running shoes design and materials selection.

Opis:
Introduction. Although airborne fungal diversity in tropical countries is known to be considerable, aerobiological research to-date has identified only a part of the fungal mycobiota that may have an impact both on human health and on crops. Previous studies in Havana city identified only 30 genera and 5 spore types; therefore, new research is required in these latitudes. This study sought to investigate airborne spore levels in Havana, with a view to learning more about local fungal diversity and assessing its influence in quantitative terms. Materials and method. A Hirst type volumetric sampler was located on the rooftop of a building 35 meters above ground level, in a busy area of the city. Sampling was carried out continuously (operating 24hours/day), at 10 L per minute during the year 2015. The fungal spores were collected on a Melinex tape coated with a 2% silicone solution. The results were expressed as spores per cubic meter (spores/m3) of air when to referring to daily values, and spores count if referring to annual value. Results. Fourteen new genera were identified in the course of volumetric sampling: six produce ascospores and eight conidia. Morphobiometric characteristics were noted for all genera, and airborne concentrations were calculated. These genera accounted for 56.4% of relative fungal frequency over the study year. Conclusions. Many airbone fungi are primary causes of both respiratory disease and crop damage. These new findings constitute a major contribution to Cuba’s aerobiological database.

The paper discusses the use of modern fluids with untypical properties in robot grippers. The electro- and magnetorheological fluids, changing their rheological properties in the presence of an electric or magnetic field, were used as working fluids of viscous clutches included in the griper drive transmission system. Two design solutions were presented for prototype industrial robot grippers with such clutches. Luminescent pressure-sensitive fluids have also been considered for their use in the micro-sensors for sensing force of the gripper’s jaw.

GdNi₅ is a ferromagnetic compound with $T_{C}=31.8 K$ and CeNi₅ is a well-known spin fluctuation compound without magnetic ordering down to the lowest temperatures. X-ray diffraction study confirms the hexagonal crystal structure and the single phase samples. Magnetic properties (M(T),M(B)) show that an increasing content of Ce depresses the transition temperature, $T_{C}$, down to 4.9 K for x=0.8. The heat capacity measurements confirmed these results.
