Opis:
Armour penetration is an essential outcome for shaped charges, especially when the behind-armour effect is considered. Hemispherical liners produce superior jet mass compared with those of traditional conical shape. In this paper two different materials have been studied as hemispherical shaped charge liners. The reference liner was hemispherical oxygen-free high-conductivity copper (OFHC); the other liner material was zirconium. These liners were experimentally tested against 4340 steel targets in shaped charges loaded with the same amount of Composition B explosive. Zirconium liners were found to offer superior performance with experimental penetration and crater diameter respectively 16% and 20% greater than OFHC. Ansys Autodyn hydrocode simulation results demonstrated that both liners produced superior jet masses exceeding 50% of the total liner mass. Moreover, zirconium had a jet tip velocity of 4869 m/s compared with 3886 m/s for OFHC. Additionally, zirconium had a superior average jet collapse to plastic deformation temperature ratio of 0.73 compared with 0.34 for OFHC. This is the first time the relation between the jet temperature during collapse and jet stretching has been reported.

Opis:
Nano-thermites or metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) have been implemented into modern research on energetic materials as they offer much higher energy densities, higher rates of energy release, stability, and safety (lower sensitivity). This paper reviews several synthetic methods for MICs that have been well thought-out for energetic applications, advantages and disadvantages, as well as the characteristics of each manufacturing technique. The techniques presented include powder mixing, sol-gel, synthesis of MICs based on nano-porous silicon (Psi), sputtering, multilayer nano-foils and electrolytically plated carbon nano-materials for nano-thermite applications. These techniques offer enormously different characteristics and, through the variation of various chemical techniques and conditions, a wide range of chemical and energetic properties may be attained. This may give the opportunity for the safe use of MICs as replacements for some conventional energetic materials in various applications, and may also enable us to study the effects when incorporating these MICs into energetic matrixes, as a promising and feasible research field.

Opis:
The thickness of a shaped charge liner is one of the essential parameters that must be considered when optimizing penetration depth into a target material. In this paper, experimental and analytical studies have been implemented using shaped charges having copper liner thicknesses ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 mm in an optimization study of the influence of jet characteristics on the achieved penetration depths into steel targets. The shaped charges were filled with equal masses of PETN-polyurethane based PBX explosive charges and fired against steel targets placed at 29 mm stand-off distance. The experimental measurements show that the depth of jet penetration into steel targets increased with liner thickness up to a thickness of 1.1 mm, after which the penetration decreased again. A numerical study was also carried out using the hydrocode Autodyn to model the jets used in the optimization analysis, which accounted for the variation of penetration depth using different liner thicknesses. This analysis also showed why the penetration depth achieved with a liner thickness of 1.0 mm was not optimum due to its non-coherent formed jet. Instead, a liner with a wall thickness of 1.1 mm exhibited the optimum penetration depth of 12.8 cm.
