The NATO Munitions Safety Information Analysis Center (MSIAC) is a multinational collaboration that collects, stores, and analyses technical information related to Munitions Safety (MS) and Insensitive Munitions (IM). This paper and presentation will provide an overview of MSIAC’s recent achievements in advancing munition safety efforts on behalf of its member nations. MSIAC supports its member nations through a variety of products and services. Poland is anticipated to become a member nation near the end of 2016. In addition to a core responsibility of addressing technical questions related to Munitions Safety posed by nations, MSIAC has a diverse programme of work aimed at developing and sharing the related underpinning scientific knowledge. This is then applied to support policy implementation and development related to munition safety. Some examples of current activities are given in this paper as well as future activities.

In this paper, we analyze the influence of the temperature of growth of epitaxial layers during their growth. Conditions are formulated under which the homogeneity of the properties of the epitaxial layers increases. An analytical approach for the analysis of mass and heat transfer is proposed, allowing at the same time to take into account changes in the parameters of processes both in space and in time, as well as nonlinearity of these processes.
W artykule opisano analizę wpływu temperatury na wzrost epitaksjalnych warstw w procesie technologicznym. Sformułowano szereg warunków dla poprawy jednorodności badanych warstw. Wprowadzono analityczne rozwiązanie dla równania transportu masy i ciepła. To rozwiązanie umożliwiło uwzględnienie zmian parametrów procesu zarówno w przestrzeni jak i w czasie. Ponadto przeprowadzone rozwiązanie pozwoliło na uwzględnienie nieliniowości badanego procesu.

Opis:
Biomaterials for bone regeneration have predominantly been fabricated from inorganic substances such as various forms of calcium phosphate (CaP), e.g. hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate and brushite. CaP materials are mechanical stable and bioactive, i.e. they form a direct bone with surrounding bone tissue. However, such pure CaP materials have certain drawbacks. They are brittle, difficult to handle in granulate form and difficult to shape in block form. Furthermore, the incorporation of biologically active substances is not easy. Hydrogels are highly hydrated three-dimensional polymer networks that are formed by crosslinking of polymer chains in solution. Hydrogels have been widely used as vehicles for drug delivery and are being used increasingly as biomaterials for tissue regeneration. As their main component is water, they have many advantages over pure inorganic materials. Firstly, the incorporation of water-soluble biologically active substances to promote tissue growth (e.g. growth factors) or to combat infection (e.g. antibiotics) is straightforward. Secondly, they are much less brittle. Thirdly, they can be implanted in a minimally invasive manner by injection, as they can undergo gelation, i.e. the transition from liquid to solid, after injection. However, their main disadvantage also stems from the fact that the mail component is water: hydrogels are mechanically weak. In order to combine the advantages of inorganic and hydrogel biomaterials, attention has recently been focused on the development of composites on the basis of mineralized hydrogels. Several strategies have been tried [1]. The most common strategy is the addition of preformed inorganic particles to the polymer solution before gelation, after which the particles remain entrapped in the crosslinked polymer network. Ideally, the particles can be distributed homogeneously in the hydrogel. The gelation process can be induced by addition of inorganic particles. For example, the addition of bioactive glass particles to a solution of the anionic polysaccharide gellan gum results in hydrogel formation due to release of ions from the particles [2]. In other words, the particles serve as an “ion-delivery system” to provide homogeneous gelation. Another strategy is to promote precipitation of the inorganic phase in the hydrogel by increasing the concentration of ions. This can be achieved biomimetically using the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) which is responsible for the mineralization of bone tissue in vivo by cleaving phosphate ions from organophosphate and thus increasing the local phosphate concentration, which in turn promotes CaP precipitation [3]. Yet another strategy is the incorporation of calcium- or phosphate-binding molecules in the hydrogel, in order to increase localion concentrations and promote CaP precipitation. Once such biomolecule is polydopamine, which binds calcium ions [4]. An added flexibility of mineralized hydrogels is the possibility of manipulation of either the hydrogel phase, or the inorganic phase, or both. For example, in the case of a hydrogel mineralized with CaP, the inorganic phase may be modified by incorporation of magnesium in order to promote adhesion and proliferation of bone-forming cells [5], or by incorporation of zinc in order to endow antibacterial activity [6]. Alternatively, the hydrogel phase may be modified by incorporation of biologically active molecules such as polyphenols, which both bind calcium ions and exhibit antibacterial activity [7]. Mineralization strategies will be illustrated on the basis of previous work [1-7].

Localization is a fundamental problem of autonomous mobile robots. Localization is the determination of the position and orientation of a robot. Most localization systems are made up of several sensors and a map of the environment. Sophisticated localization systems can solve both the global location problem and the kid-napped robot problem. Global localization is the process of placing the robot into an unknown location within the map, and the robot should be able to locate itself within a relatively short period of time. The kidnapped robot problem is similar to global localization, as it is a test of how well the robot is able to recover after becoming lost. The robot is “teleported” to a new location, and the robot should again be able to determine its new location within a relatively short amount of time. CReSIS (Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets) is developing autonomous robots in an effort to measure ice sheets characteristics in Greenland and Antarctica. These robots currently rely on differential GPS for localization and navigation. In order to survive for long periods of time in these environments, however, the robots need to be able to return to campsites in order to refuel and unload the data that has been acquired. In order to perform this task effectively and safely, a more elaborate system is required. A localization system that can recognize the dfferent locations of the campsites is the beginning of this process. The approach is to use a single camera for use in multiple types of large-scale environments, indoors and outdoors using a topological map. The system described uses an appearance-based approach for recognizing the different locations. The appearance-based methods attempt to recognize the appearance of a scene rather than specific objects. Several different types of features are tested including histograms, eigenimages, and Hu Moments. Using these simple features, the system is able to determine its location within the map at 95% accuracy.

A simple method for determining submonolayer adsorbate coverages by means of Auger electron spectroscopy is presented. The procedure is based on the ratio of low to high kinetic energy Auger signals from the substrate alone, therefore it does not require a direct measurement of adsorbate peaks. It may be of special interest in cases where the adsorbate signal is difficult or impossible to measure, as well as when adsorbate and substrate peaks overlap or when peaks are absent (H or He) or of low intensity. The method is tested by quantification of sulphur layer on the Ni(001) and on the polycrystalline iron surface.

Basing on the consistent couple stress theory (CCST), we develop a unified size-dependent shear deformation theory to analyze the free vibration characteristics of simply supported, porous functionally graded (FG) piezoelectric microplates which resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation are subjected to electric voltages. Various CCST-based shear deformation theories can be reproduced by incorporating their corresponding shape functions, which characterize the through-thickness distributions of the shear deformations, into the unified size-dependent theory. The reproduced CCST-based plate theories include the classical plate theory (CPT), the first-order shear deformation plate theory (SDPT), Reddy’s refined SDPT, the sinusoidal SDPT, the exponential SDPT, and the hyperbolic SDPT. The unified size-dependent theory is subsequently used to determine the natural frequencies of simply supported, porous FG piezoelectric microplates and their corresponding vibration mode shapes. The effects of the material length scale parameter, the length-to-thickness ratio, the material-property gradient index, different values of the applied voltages, the porosity parameter, different porosity distribution patterns, the Winkler spring coefficient, and the shear modulus of the surrounding medium on the natural frequencies of the porous FG piezoelectric microplates are examined and appear to be significant.

The concept of Insensitive Munitions, or IM, is not new; the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has been working to improve the safety of munitions since their inception. The first NATO standard on IM, STANAG 4439: Policy for Introduction and Assessment of IM, was published for ratification in 1995 and was ratified in 1998. U.S. Congress passed the „Insensitive Munitions law” in 2001 that specifically requires „The Secretary of Defense [to] ensure, to the extent practicable, that insensitive munitions under deployment or procurement are safe throughout development and fielding when subject to unplanned stimuli”. These unplanned stimuli take the form of rapid or slow heating events, such as a fuel fire on a vehicle or aircraft, or an adjacent fire in a vehicle or storage magazine; impact by fragment or bullets due to shrapnel from nearby explosions or small arms fire from combat or terrorist events; sympathetic reaction due to the detonation of adjacent munitions; and shaped charge jet attack from rocketpropelled grenade or similar weapons used by enemy and friendly forces. In 2007, U.S. DoD focused its efforts on developing joint solutions through a centrally managed IM technology program: the Joint IM Technology Program (JIMTP). There have been numerous JIMTP IM technology development successes and transitions to munition systems. The U.S. DoD will continue to develop new munitions to meet increased performance requirements to respond to various threats and enable lethality overmatch in any scenario. Using today's available technology to obtain higher performance typically translates to a worse IM response. As a result, the U.S. DoD will continue to develop IM technology in order to assure safety and reduced vulnerability while improving munitions performance.

The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahim Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 9.22. It is feared that such conditions may increase the alkalinity of Creek water which according to USEPA will increase the physiological stress of many aquatic species resulting in decreased reproduction, decreased growth, disease, or death thereby reducing the biological diversity of the Creek. The total organic matter in the creek sediments was found to be maximum of 10.30 % with an annual average concentration of 6.29 %. Although organic matter is a primary source of food for benthic organisms and is important in maintaining a viable ecosystem, too much of organic matter deposited in the sediments will be responsible for depletion in dissolved oxygen content of the creek water causing unpleasant odours and may also increase the rate of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to control the discharge of pollutants into the ecosystems.

The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the level of toxic heavy metals in the water of Mahim Creek near Mumbai. It was observed that the annual average concentration of heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Zn, Cu and Ni and Hg was found to be 0.68, 0.28, 0.15, 0.04, 2.93, 0.64, 1.29 and 0.31 ppm respectively. The average concentrations of Hg and Pb were found to be above the maximum permissible limit of 0.01 ppm and 0.1 ppm respectively set for inland surface water by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India. The results suggest that there is a need to have such regular scientific monitoring for longer time period in order to understand the variation in level of these toxic heavy metals discharged in to the creek water. It is feared that the existing problem if ignored may increase the pollution problem of the creek due to the toxic heavy metals resulting in threat to the biological life of an aquatic ecosystem. From the results of the present investigation it seems that the time has come to move towards ecosystem specific discharge standards to maintain the health and productivity of natural resources on which the majority of human population is dependent.

Point contact spectroscopy experiments were performed on both single crystals Bi$\text{}_{2}$Sr$\text{}_{2}$CaCu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{8+y}$ and BiSrCaCuO/Ag sintered material using gold tips. The spectra exhibit tunneling structure, which are interpreted in terms of the energy gap structure 2Δ = 58 meV at 4.2 K. We observed the strong Andreev reflection of the Au-BiSrCaCuO/Ag boundary.

For a single GaAs/AlAs/GaAs type II pseudodirect double quantum well, as well as for superlattices it was predicted that the oscillator strength of the lowest optical transition has a periodic dependence on the number of AlAs monolayers. The oscillator strength depends on the coupling between theΓ and X electron states. We use samples containing a single GaAs/AlAs/GaAs double quantum well with thickness gradient to show experimental evidence of this effect. The results concerning theΓ-X coupling are obtained from the study of the ratio of photoluminescence intensities of the zero-phonon line and the phonon replica and from their time decay. They show the monolayer dependence of the Γ-X mixing potential. We extend the model describing the Γ-X coupling for ideal interfaces in the frame of the envelope approximation to the case of non-abrupt interfaces and exciton localization. The amplitude of variation of the radiative recombination time due to the Γ-X mixing is well reproduced within this model.

Open antra, a special form of external brood pouches in Ordovician ostracodes suitable for both egg and brood care, are enabled by the associated pore system. Special kinds of radial pores connected with the adventral sculptures are described for the first time. Relationships exist between antral development and lifestyle in that open antra occur in nektobenthic taxa, while closed antra (false brood pouches) are connected with a benthic lifestyle. Taxa, particularly those with open antra, which are morphologically very similar in being non−lobate or non−sulcate, can be distinguished by the construction of the respective antra and the associated pore systems, as exemplified by Levisulculus, Swantina, and Ampletochitina.

Opis:
The utilization of monohydric alcohols waste fraction from the Cyklopol process was studied. On the basis of this fraction the solvent, which mainly contains acetic acid esters, was synthesized. Tests of the application of the obtained solvent as a base of glue for plastics were carried out and it was found out that it could be used to stick PMMA together. In the case of PS, PET, PC or PVC slightly weaker sticking properties of this solvent also occurred. The glue joint characteristics in the case of PMMA were similar to those obtained for the glue joints that were made with the use of the commercially available glue used for this plastic. The additional advantage of our glue is its nice fruity smell. The obtained results enable us to establish the possibility of waste alcohol fraction management as a raw material for the production of glue for plastic. The esterification method proposed in the work can be a good way of management of waste alcohol fractions naturally occurring during cyclohexanone production.

Opis:
Lactoferrin, a glycoprotein found in milk, has stimulated osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, but has remained relatively unexplored as a biomaterial component. In this study, artificial extracellular matrices consisting of fibrils of collagen type I containing lactoferrin were used as coatings for the biocompatible polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). The numbers of cells, their viability and proliferation rate were evaluated in various time intervals. Additionally, cell initial spreading area on day 1 was measured. The results show that lactoferrin accelerates fibril-logenesis, leads to increased osteoblast cell numbers 1 and 3 days post-seeding, and encourages their proliferation in each of the tested time intervals.

Opis:
Treating chalcopyrite flotation concentrates by hydrometallurgical techniques seems to be the most convenient method for leaching copper due to concerns over air pollution and regulations regarding the emission of sulfur dioxide that result from smelting. In this study, the leaching recovery-time trajectories of bulk chalcopyrite concentrate obtained from a flotation plant in the Kastamonu region of Turkey are presented. The effects of various parameters were elucidated in the nitrous-sulfuric acid electrolyte (CNaNO2:0.05 M–0.15 M, CH2SO4:1 M) at a moderate temperature (80–120 °C). A high level of copper recovery (98%) from bulk chalcopyrite concentrate was obtained under a total pressure of 6 atm at 120°C within 2 h when using small amounts of nitrite species due to their autocatalytic behavior in acidic solutions. The kinetics were well correlated with the shrinking core model for the diffusion controlled mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 34.06 kJ·mol–1. Elemental sulfur was the primary leaching product on the mineral surface, as confirmed using XRD and SEM/EDX. In this study the results on TiO2 thin films doped with europium and palladium at the amount of 0.9 at. % and 5.8 at. % respectively have been presented. For thin films deposition the high energy (HE) magnetron sputtering method was used. Some samples were subjected to the post-processed annealing. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results have shown that after deposition nanocrystalline TiO2 - rutile structure was obtained. After additional annealing at 800°C average crystallites sizes increased about twofold (from 9 to 16 nm). The XRD results were confirmed using atomic force microscope. Optical properties of thin films were examined using optical transmission method. They have shown that doping with Eu and Pd has decreased the transmission level by about 15% and shifted absorption edge to the longer wavelength range (from 330 to 450 nm) compared to pure TiO2. The width of optical bandgap of TiO2:(Eu, Pd) thin film decreased to ca. 1.7 eV, i.e. twofold, when compared to 3.35 eV of undoped-TiO2. The photoluminescence results have shown that examined thin film has strong red luminescence from standard Eu3+ emission lines.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań cienkich warstw TiO2 domieszkowanych europem i palladem, w ilości odpowiednio 0,9 % at. i 5,8 % at. Do nanoszenia cienkich warstw zastosowano wysokoenergetyczny proces (High Energy) rozpylania magnetronowego. Wybrane próbki poddano dodatkowemu poprocesowemu wygrzewaniu. Wyniki dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej (X-Ray Difrraction - XRD) wykazały, że bezpośrednio po naniesieniu otrzymano nanokrystaliczną warstwę TiO2 o strukturze rutylu. Po dodatkowym wygrzewaniu w temperaturze 800°C średnia wielkość krystalitów wzrosła około dwukrotnie (z 9 do 16 nm). Wyniki badań XRD zostały potwierdzone za pomocą badań wykonanych za pomocą mikroskopu sił atomowych. Właściwości optyczne cienkich warstw określono na podstawie wyników badań metodą transmisji światła. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały, że domieszkowanie Eu i Pd spowodowało spadek przezroczystości warstwy o ~ 15% i przesunięcie krawędzi absorpcji optycznej w stronę dłuższych fal (z 330 do 450 nm) w porównaniu do warstwy niedomieszkowanego TiO2. Szerokość optycznej przerwy zabronionej dla cienkiej warstwy TiO2:(Eu, Pd) po naniesieniu wynosiła 1,7 eV i była około dwukrotnie mniejsza w porównaniu do 3,35 eV dla warstwy TiO2. Wyniki badań foto-luminescencji pokazały, że badana warstwa wykazuje silną czerwoną luminescencję odpowiadającą standardowym linią emisyjnym Eu3+.

Determination of the proximate, nutritionally valuable mineral in five samples of food seasonings label as, A, B, C, D, & E food condiments readily consumed in Nigeria were obtained from Gwagwalada Central Market Abuja. Investigating the concentrations of some mineral elements such as, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and two heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were carried out using AA320N Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) after acid digestion with 2:1 HNO3/HClO4. The result shows that all samples contained high levels of protein (13.63% ±0.53%) with mean value moisture, ash, fat, fiber, and carbohydrate for all samples levels being (3.94%±0.64%), (57.51% ±4.27%), (5.11% ±0.20%), (0.02% ±0.00%) and (18.41% ±0.41%) respectively. Sample D has high Fe concentration with (0.04 ±0.01 μg/g) and Sample B & C has low Fe concentration with (0.01 ±0.00 μg/g). Sample D & E has high Zn concentration with (0.03 ±0.01 μg/g) and sample A, B & C has low Zn concentration with (0.02 ±0.01 μg/g). In cadmium, sample A has the high concentration (0.03±0.01μg/g), sample B & D has the low Cd concentration (0.02 ±0.00 μg/g). Sample D had the high Pb concentration (0.05 ±0.00 μg/g), sample C had the low Pb concentration (0.02±0.01 μg/g). In conclusion, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb were both present in low concentrations in all the samples analyzed. The presence of Cd and Pb in the food seasonings even at low concentration could prove fatal through bioaccumulation. The low level of the toxic metals, Pb and Cd indicates that these products meet the safe limits specified by most food standards.

It is important to understand the quality of the fossil record of early tetrapods (Tetrapoda, minus Lissamphibia and Amniota) because of their key role in the transition of vertebrates from water to land, their dominance of terrestrial faunas for over 100 million years of the late Palaeozoic and early Mesozoic, and their variable fates during the end−Permian mass extinction. The first description of an early tetrapod dates back to 1824, and since then discoveries have occurred at a rather irregular pace, with peaks and troughs corresponding to some of the vicissitudes of human history through the past two centuries. As expected, the record is dominated by the well−sampled sedimentary basins of Europe and North America, but finds from other continents are increasing rapidly. Comparisons of snapshots of knowledge in 1900, 1950, and 2000 show that discovery of new species has changed the shape of the species−level diversification curve, contrary to earlier studies of family−level taxa. There is, however, little evidence that taxon counts relate to research effort (as counted by numbers of publications), and there are no biasing effects associated with differential study of different time intervals through the late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic. In fact, levels of effort are apparently not related to geological time, with no evidence that workers have spent more time on more recent parts of the record. In particular, the end−Permian mass extinction was investigated to determine whether diversity changes through that interval might reflect worker effort: it turns out that most records of early tetrapod taxa (when corrected for duration of geological series) occur in the Lower Triassic.

2-aminopurine is a highly fluorescent isomer of adenine that can be incorporated into DNA as a probe of structure, dynamics, and protein-DNA interactions. Interpretation of the fluorescence of 2-aminopurine in DNA requires a model of the electronic structure of this fluorophore in its ground and excited states. To this end, electronic structures and energies of the ground and lowest singlet excited states of 2-amino-9-methylpurine were calculated by the multiconfiguration self-consistent field method supplemented by multiconfiguration perturbation theory. The molecular geometry was optimized in both of these electronic states to permit investigation of both electronic excitation and fluorescence emission. The predicted energies and transition dipoles were in good agreement with experiment. The permanent molecular dipole of 2-amino-9-methylpurine increased upon excitation, suggesting that both the absorption and emission spectra should shift to slightly lower energies in polar solvents. The anomalous spectral shifts observed in water suggest that 2-aminopurine undergoes hydrogen bonding that better stabilizes the ground state than the excited state. From the calculated electrostatic potentials of these two states, the position at which this hydrogen bond forms was predicted. These results form a basis for understanding the excited states and possible intermolecular interactions of 2-aminopurine in DNA.

In this work, investigations of electrical properties of Eu and Pd-doped TiO2 thin films have been outlined. Our previous studies [4, 6] of Eu and Pd-doped TiO2, have shown the nanocrystalline structure and high transparency in visible region (about 70%). Now, it has been shown that by incorporation of Pd and Eu dopants into TiO2 matrix, its properties can be modified so as to obtain simultaneously electrically and optically active oxide-semiconductor with specified type of electrical conduction at room temperature. Pd dopant changes the electrical properties of TiO2 from dielectric oxide to conducting oxide. Samples were examined by means of theromelectrical, current-voltage (I-V), transient photovoltage and optical beam induced current OBIC (Optical Beam Induced Current). I-V measurements showed formation of electrical junctions at the interface of semiconducting thin films of metal oxides and silicon substrate (TOS-Si). The presence of build-in potential has been confirmed by OBIC through created maps of photocurrent distribution generated in the active areas of prepared TOS-Si heterojunctions.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono badanie właściwości elektrycznych cienkich warstw TiO2 domieszkowanych Eu i Pd. Pokazano, że wprowadzenie domieszki Eu i Pd do matrycy TiO2 modyfikuje jej właściwości, pozwala otrzymać cienkie warstwy elektrycznie i optycznie aktywne. Dodatkowo, wytworzone tlenki posiadają określony typ przewodnictwa elektrycznego w temperaturze pokojowej. Decydujący wpływ na właściwości elektryczne matrycy TiO2 miała domieszka Pd, która umożliwiła zmianę właściwości cienkich warstw dielektrycznych na półprzewodnikowe. Próbki badano za pomocą charakterystyk termoelektrycznych, charakterystyk prądowo-napięciowych (I-V) oraz metodą OBIC. Na podstawie pomiarów I-V zaobserwowano formowanie się złącza na granicy przezroczysty tlenek półprzewodnikowy-podłoże krzemowe (TOS-Si). Mapy rozkładu fotoprądu generowanego w obszarach aktywnych wytworzonego heterozłącza TOS-Si potwierdziły obecność potencjału wbudowanego.

Because of their prolific nature on the battlefield, rocket propelled and gun-launched grenades are of particular concern to the soldier, particularly because of the severe reaction that occurs when a munition is hit by the shaped charge jet. As a result of the danger that such a detonation poses, it is necessary to more precisely understand the behaviour of munitions subjected to these types of devices. In response to these threats, standardized 81 mm and 40 mm shaped charge warheads were developed for use during threat assessment testing to act as a consistent, lower-cost representative of shaped charge projectiles commonly encountered on the battlefield, and to help quantify the interaction of these jest with explosive charges. The international standards for shaped charge jet threat testing uses the Held initiation criteria V²D, where V is the jet velocity and D is the diameter. V²D was computationally predicted using the high-rate continuum models CALE and ALE-3D. The surrogate warheads were test fired through aluminium target plates to strip off jet mass to adjust the V²D to the threat munition.

Thermosensitive injectable chitosan hydrogels can be formed by neutralization of acidic chitosan solutions with sodium betaglycerophosphate (Na-β-GP) coupled with increasing temperature to body temperature. Such hydrogels have been considered for applications in bone regeneration. In this study, chitosan hydrogels were enriched with glycerol and the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) with a view to improving their suitability as materials for bone tissue engineering. Mineral formation was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and increases in the mass fraction of the hydrogel not consisting of water. Incorporation of ALP in hydrogels followed by incubation in a solution containing calcium ions and glycerophosphate, a substrate for ALP, led to formation of calcium phosphate within the hydrogel. MG-63 osteoblast-like cells were cultivated in eluates from hydrogels containing ALP and without ALP at different dilutions and directly on the hydrogel samples. Hydrogels containing ALP exhibited superior cytocompatibility to ALP-free hydrogels. These results pave the way for the use of glycerol- and ALP-enriched hydrogels in bone regeneration.

Enzymatyczna mineralizacja hydrożeli jest obiecującym sposobem uzyskiwania materiałów do leczenia ubytków tkanki kostnej. Dzięki wytworzeniu wewnątrz materiału fosforanów wapnia (CaP), hydrożele stają się sztywniejsze, przez co bardziej odpowiednie do regeneracji tkanki kostnej. W przedstawionych badanych hydrożele z gumy gellan (GG) zawierające enzym – fosfatazę alkaliczną (ALP, 0,5 mg/ml) były mineralizowane poprzez inkubację w roztworze glicerofosforanu wapnia (CaGP). Porównano trzy różne stężenia GG: 0,7; 1,2 i 1,6%. W celu oceny zawartości CaP oznaczono suchą masę mineralizowanych próbek. Rozmieszczenie fazy mineralnej obserwowano w mikroskopie świetlnym na przekrojach. Przeprowadzono również testy mechaniczne w próbie ściskania. W badaniach komórkowych komórki osteoblastopodobne MG-63 hodowano na powierzchni materiałów jak i na przekrojach w okresie 1 oraz 7 dni. Żywotność komórek oznaczono przy pomocy barwienia live/dead. Badania mechaniczne wykazały znacznie wyższy moduł Younga w przypadku materiałów zmineralizowanych w porównaniu z czystymi hydrożelami jednak wzrost ten nie był tak wyraźny dla hydrożeli o wyższym stężeniu GG. Z powodu wypłukiwania ALP, rozmieszczenie fazy mineralnej w obrębie próbek nie było jednorodne: większość CaP tworzyła się wewnątrz materiału. Obecność fazy mineralnej sprzyjała adhezji komórek MG-63 do materiału, ich rozpłaszczeniu jak również przeżywalności.
Enzymatic mineralization of hydrogels is a promising approach to obtain new materials for the treatment of bone tissue defects. Thanks to creation of calcium phosphates (CaP) inside the material, the hydrogel becomes more rigid and therefore more suitable for bone tissue replacement. In this study, gellan gum (GG) hydrogels containing the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP, 0.5 mg/ml) were mineralized by incubation in mineralization solutions of calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP). Three different concentrations of GG were compared: 0.7, 1.2 and 1.6% (w/v). In order to assess amount of CaP formed, dry mass percentage was calculated while distribution of mineral phase was observed by light microscopy. Mechanical tests in compression mode were also carried out. Osteoblast-like MG-63 cells were cultured for 1 and 7 days on the surface and cross-sections of mineralized and non-mineralized samples. Viability of cells was measured by live/dead staining. Mechanical testing revealed that Young’s modulus of mineralized hydrogels was much higher than unmineralized hydrogels. However, this increase was not particularly pronounced for samples of higher GG content. Due to ALP leaching, the distribution of minerals was inhomogeneous: most of the mineral phase was formed inside the material. The presence of CaP in mineralized samples promoted attachment, spreading and viability of MG-63 cells.

Numerical models represent a powerful tool for investigating the biomechanical behavior of articular cartilages, in particular in the case of complex conformation of anatomical site. In the literature, there are complex non-linear-multiphase models for investigating the mechanical response of articular cartilages, but seldom implemented for the analysis of high organized structure such as the foot. In the present work, the biomechanical behavior of foot cartilage is investigated by means of a fiber-reinforced hyperelastic constitutive model. The constitutive parameters are obtained through the comparison between in vitro experimental indentation tests on cartilage and numerical analysis data interpreting the specific experimental conditions. A finite element model of the hindfoot region is developed. Particular attention is paid to model cartilage in order to respect its morphometric configuration, including also the synovial capsule. The reliability of the procedure adopted is evaluated by comparing the numerical response of tibio-talar joint model with in vivo experimental tests mimicking the foot response in stance configuration.

This work focuses on the reprocessability of metallic 92Mo and ceramic MgO, which is under investigation for (Pu,MA)-oxide (MA = minor actinide) fuel within a metallic 92Mo matrix (CERMET) and a ceramic MgO matrix (CERCER). Magnesium oxide and molybdenum reference samples have been fabricated by powder metallurgy. The dissolution of the matrices was studied as a function of HNO3 concentration (1–7 mol/L) and temperature (25–90°C). The rate of dissolution of magnesium oxide and metallic molybdenum increased with temperature. While the MgO rate was independent of the acid concentration (1–7 mol/L), the rate of dissolution of Mo increased with acid concentration. However, the dissolution of Mo at high temperatures and nitric acid concentrations was accompanied by precipitation of MoO3. The extraction of uranium, americium, and europium in the presence of macro amounts of Mo and Mg was studied by three different extraction agents: tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctylhexylethoxymalonamide (DMDOHEMA), and N,N,N’,N’- -tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA). With TBP no extraction of Mo and Mg occurred. Both matrix materials are partly extracted by DMDOHEMA. Magnesium is not extracted by TODGA (D < 0.1), but a weak extraction of Mo is observed at low Mo concentration.

Purpose: In this work, the mechanical behavior of two block copolymers for biomedical applications is studied with particular regard to the effects induced by a steam sterilization treatment that biomedical devices usually undergo in healthcare facilities. This investigation is aimed at describing the elasto-plastic behavior of the stress-strain response, determining a functional dependence between material constitutive parameters, to obtain an optimal constitutive model. Methods: The mechanical properties of these polymers are analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests, before and after the sterilization process. The effect of sterilization on the mechanical behavior is evaluated. The Ramberg-Osgood model is used to describe the elasto-plastic behavior of the stress-strain response. Results: Data from uniaxial tensile tests are discussed in the light of previous data on the same polymeric materials, in order to highlight the correlation between physicochemical and mechanical properties variation. The material constitutive parameters are determined and the functional dependence between them is found, thus enabling an optimal constitutive model to be obtained. Conclusions: The effect of sterilization on the material constitutive parameters is studied, to evaluate the suitability of the model in describing the mechanical response of biomedical polymer before and after sterilization treatment. The same approach can be applied to other biomaterials, under various tensile tests, and for several processes that induce variation in mechanical properties.

Fosfataza alkaliczna (ALP), enzym odgrywający rolę w mineralizacji kości, został związany wewnątrz kleistego hydrożelu chemicznie zbliżonego do białek omulków, składającego się z glikolu katecholo-polyetylenowego (cPEG). Następnie, przygotowane hydrożele zostaly zanurzone w roztworze glycerofosforanu wapniowego (CaGP) w celu ich zmineralizowania i poprzez to polepszenia ich przydatności jako materiał zastępczy kości. Związany ALP zachował swoją bioaktywność i przyczynił się do tworzenia materialu podobnego do apatytu wewnątrz cPEG-żelów. Ilość tego materiału oraz wytrzymałość mechaniczna wzrastały zarówno wraz ze zwiększeniem okresu inkubacyjnego jak i stężenia fosfatazy. Wyniki pokazują zasadę dzialania mineralizacji za pośrednictwem fosfatazy ALP.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme involved in mineralization of bone, was incorporated into mussel protein-inspired adhesive hydrogels consisting of catechol-polyethylene glycol (cPEG) and incubated in calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) solution to induce their mineralization with a view to improving their suitability as materials for bone replacement. Incorporated ALP retained its bioactivity and induced formation of apatite-like material within cPEG gels which rose with increasing incubation time and ALP concentration, as well as an increase in mechanical strength. The results prove the principle of ALP-mediated enzymatic mineralization.

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels designed for osteochondral regeneration were mineralized with calcium phosphate (CaP) and magnesium phosphate (MgP) by incorporation of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and incubation in solutions of 0.1 M calcium or magnesium glycerophosphate (CaGP, MgGP). Hydrogels incubated in water served as controls. Dry mass percentage, i.e. the percentage consisting of polymer and mineral and not water, was markedly higher for samples incubated in CaGP and MgGP and decreased in the order: CaGP>MgGP>water. CaP and MgP formation was confirmed by FTIR. SEM revealed spherical deposits characteristic for apatite in samples incubated in CaGP and plate-like crystals of the magnesium phosphate bobierrite in samples incubated in MgGP, while samples incubated in water were devoid of deposits. Rheometric testing showed that storage modulus of hydrogels incubated in CaGP and MgGP was markedly higher and decreased in the order: CaGP>MgGP>water. The results prove the principle of enzymatic mineralization of PVA with CaP and MgP to improve their suitability for bone regeneration applications.

This paper is focused on the quantification of the effects of cropland abandonment on gully development and denudation rates for a sample hillslope of Central Italy that underwent cropland abandonment, located within the Tevere River Basin. This goal is pursued by the integration of different erosion monitoring and estimation techniques: the application of DGPS surveys let us estimating the erosion rate since agricultural practices were interrupted (30 years ago) and the traditional erosion monitoring technique with pins was applied during two years in order to validate DGPS survey results and comprehend the dynamics of geomorphic processes affecting the considered denudation hot spot. The investigations proved that cropland abandonment provoked an intensification of erosion rate in the study area, as already observed in other sites of the Mediterranean region. Moreover this work contributes to the comprehension of the applicability of DGPS surveys to compute erosion rates for fairly large time-spans.

W przypadku wykorzystania hydrożeli w inżynierii tkanki kostnej wskazane jest takie ich zmodyfikowanie aby zawierały w swoim składzie składniki mineralne i/lub mogły ulegać samoistnej mineralizacji. W niniejszej pracy podjęto próbę wytworzenia kompozytów hydrożelowych z gumy gellan i różnej zawartości (0,75%, 1,5%, 3%) szkła bioaktywnego (BG) uzyskanego uprzednio metodą zol-żel. Kompozyty dodatkowo wzbogacono w enzym sprzyjający mineralizacji (fosfataza alkaliczna - ALP) oraz poddawano je inkubacji w roztworze glicerofosforanu wapnia (CaGP) przez czas 1, 3 i 7 dni. Oceniono właściwości mechaniczne kompozytów w próbie ściskania oraz dokonano pomiarów ich masy po wysuszeniu, które świadczyły o obecności BG oraz tworzeniu się fazy mineralnej. Morfologię próbek po wysuszeniu analizowano za pomocą mikroskopu stereoskopowego zaś ich mikrostrukturę za pomocą mikroskopu skaningowego elektronowego (SEM). Przeprowadzono też badania za pomocą mikroanalizy rentgenowskiej (EDS). Badania wykazały, że w kompozytach bez dodatku ALP mineralizacja nie zachodziła lub zachodziła w bardzo niewielkim stopniu. Obserwacje SEM i analiza EDS wykazały tworzenie się fosforanów wapnia w próbkach kompozytowych zawierających ALP po inkubacji w CaGP. Najkorzystniejsze właściwości mechaniczne wykazywały kompozyty wzbogacone w ALP i zawierające najmniejBG (0.75%) poddane 7-dniowej inkubacji w CaGP.
When using hydrogels in bone tissue engineering it is desirable to modify them to include in their structure mineral particles and/or induce their spontaneous mineralization. In this study attempts to prepare gellan gum hydrogel/bioactive glass composites with various contents (0.75%, 1.5%, 3%) of sol-gel derived bioactive glass (BG) were undertaken. Composites were additionally enriched with an enzyme which promotes mineralization (alkaline phospatase - ALP) and incubated in calcium glycerophosphate solution (CaGP) for 2, 4 and 7 days. Mechanical properties were evaluated on the basis of the results of compression tests and mass measurements of dried samples indicated the presence of BG and formation of mineral phases. Morphology and microstructure of dried samples were analyzed by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Studies using X-ray microanalysis (EDS) were also performed. It was found that in composites without ALP mineralization did not occur or only to a very small degree. SEM observation and EDS analysis showed formation of calcium phosphate in samples containing ALP. The best mechanical properties were exhibited by composites enriched with ALP and with the lowest amount of BG (0.75%), incubated 7 days in CaGP.

This study aimed to investigate the subjective health complaints (SHC) in the teaching profession of Hong Kong. On the basis of the SHC inventory, a questionnaire was prepared for data collection through a mail survey. A total of 1 710 usable questionnaires were returned by the primary or secondary school teachers. The results showed that 99.5% (n = 1 702) of respondents suffered at least one type of the 39 single health problems on the total SHC scale during the preceding 30 days. The 10 most frequently reported health complaints among the teachers were tiredness, eyestrain, anxiety, sleep problems, voice disorder, shoulder pain, neck pain, headache, cold/flu, and lower-back pain. With the exception of the category of pseudoneurological complaints, primary school teachers showed a statistically higher prevalence in reporting problems in 6 of 7 subscales. The 5 most severe complaints were tiredness, eyestrain, sleep problems, shoulder pain, and voice disorder.

Opis:
Safety issues related to work-site conditions often deal with potential worker exposure to infectious airborne microorganisms due to their dissemination in indoor air and contamination of surfaces. Germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) radiation is used in health-care settings and other occupational environments for microbial inactivation. In this study, a new methodology for determining the efficiency of GUV microbial inactivation of surfaces was developed and evaluated. The method utilizes identical chambers in which test microorganisms are irradiated on agar surfaces at different humidity and irradiation intensity levels. The effects of GUV intensity and exposure time on microbial inactivation were examined for Micrococcus luteus and Serratia marcescens. It was found that at low humidity levels (20-25%) both organisms can be inactivated with at least 95% efficiency if the GUV intensity exceeds 50 /zW/cm2 for at least 3-5 min (corresponding to a dose of ~ 1 0 mJ/cm2). The radiation dose needed for effective inactivation of S. marcescens, as measured by a UV meter near the microbial sample, was found not to be affected by the humidity level, whereas that of M. luteus increased at higher humidities. The findings of this study can be used to determine sufficient GUV inactivation doses for occupational environments with various microbial contaminations.

Photoluminescence spectra of type-II ZnSe/BeTe superlattices were studied. A linear polarised photoluminescence has been found in the spectral range of spatially indirect exciton transitions. Opis:
Results of investigations into integration of foam titanium implants (FTI), with rabbit bone are presented. Three groups of implants were examined: clean titanium implants produced by selective laser melting, FTI coated with a thin film of octacalcium phosphate (OCP), doped with 0.6 weight percent of Mg, deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and FTI with hydroxyapatite (HA) doped with 0.6 wt.% of Mg. Analysis of histopathology of implants' integration with bone were performed by staining using the triple chromatographic method of Masson - Goldner, pla- nimetric analysis using the Kruskal - Wallis test, an ANOVA test and microtomography. The best results were obtained for implants coated with HA, followed by those coated with OCP. Implants from these two groups showed superior integration with bone than uncoated titanium implants.

Using an electrospinning technique, we constructed composite nanofibrous membranes containing a copolymer of L-lactide and glycolide (PLGA, ratio 85:15) and 33 wt% of nanodiamond particles. he number of initially adhering human osteoblast-like MG 63 cells on day 1 after seeding, their spreading and subsequent growth were similar on both types of membranes. However, higher cell numbers on day 3 and 7 after seeding and a larger cell spreading area were found in the cells in the control polystyrene cell culture dishes. Nevertheless, the composite PLGA-ND membranes provided relatively good support for colonization with bone-derived cells; thus this material is promising for bone tissue engineering.

For the first time, the genus Hesperomyces has been reported to infect Coleomegilla maculata in laboratory mass rearing in Brazil. Thalli were found growing on several parts of this ladybird species, including the head, elytra, legs, and abdomen. Infested adults died after 60 days.

Opis:
The introduction of different bioelements into the structure of hydroxyapatite exerts a positive influence on the growth of new bone tissue. One such useful bioelement is silica, which possesses antibacterial properties and also acts as a factor regulating bone mineralization through stimulation of DNA to synthesize osteoblasts. Results of investigations into integration of foam titanium implants (FTI), with rabbit bone are presented. Two groups of implants were investigated: clean titanium implants produced by selective laser melting and FTI coated with a thin film of hydroxyapatite (HA) mixed with 10 wt. % of bioglass (BG) of A2 type (CaO- P2P-SiO2). Analysis of histopathology of implants' integration with bone were performed by staining using the triple chromatographic method of Masson - Goldner, planimetric analysis using the Kruskal - Wallis test, an ANOVA test and microtomography. Application of layers of the type HA+GH showed superior integration with bone than uncoated titanium implants.

Opis:
The effects of feeding, fasting, and re-feeding on the ruminal profile of growing cattle were studied. Ruminal fluid and urine samples were obtained from 12 crossbred steers weighing approximately 300 kg during the following periods: 11 h of normal feeding (postprandial period), 48 consecutive hours of fasting, and followed by 48 h of re-feeding. Fasting promotes changes in the ruminal profile, such as an increase in ruminal pH, reduction in the number of rumen protozoa and bacteria, and decrease in the urinary excretion of allantoin; however, it does not change the urinary uric acid excretion rate. The overall mean ruminal pH was higher during fasting (7.53±0.27) in comparison to those at normal feeding (6.72±0.25) and re-feeding (6.62±0.31) (p<0.05). During re-feeding, the ruminal profile returned to normal, except for the protozoa count, which despite a slight increase only after 48 h of re-feeding, did not recover to baseline values.

Opis:
Thermosensitive chitosan hydrogels containing sodium beta-glycerophosphate (ß-GP), whose gelation is induced by increasing temperature to body temperature, were functionalized by incorporation of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme involved in mineralization of bone. ALP incorporation led to acceleration of gelation upon increase of temperature for four different chitosan preparations of differing molecular weight, as demonstrated by rheometric time sweeps at 37°C. Hydrogels containing ALP were subsequently incubated in calcium glycerophosphate (Ca-GP) solution to induce their mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP) in order to improve their suitability as materials for bone replacement. Incorporated ALP retained its bioactivity and induced formation of CaP mineral, as confirmed by SEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, ICP-OES, and increases in dry mass percentage, which rose with increasing ALP concentration and incubation time in Ca-GP solution. The results demonstrate that ALP accelerates formation of thermosensitive chitosan/ß-GP hydrogels and induces their mineralization with CaP, which paves the way for applications as injectable bone replacement materials.

Opis:
Zastosowanie hydrożeli jako skafoldów dla inżynierii tkanki kostnej umożliwia integrację substancji bioaktywnej takiej jak enzym fosfataza alkaliczna (ALP), który sprzyja mineralizacji. W niniejszej pracy, hydrożele z gumy gellan (GG) zawierające ALP poddano mineralizacji z wytworzeniem fosforanów wapnia (CaP) i magnezu (MgP) przez inkubację w płynach mineralizujących zawierających glicerofosforan wapniowy (CaGP) i magnezowy (MgGP). Porównano pięć różnych stosunków stężeń CaGP:MgGP, mianowicie 0.1:0, 0.075:0.025, 0.05:0.05, 0.025:0.075 and 0:0.1 (mol dm-3). Tworzenie CaP i MgP potwierdzono za pomocą FTIR, spektroskopii Ramana, SEM, EDS, IC- P-OES, XRD, TGA oraz poprzez wyznaczanie zmian suchej masy. Stwierdzono, że wapń ulega integracji w fazie mineralnej w znacznie większym stopniu niż magnez. Wzrost ilości magnezu spowodował zmiany w morfologii otrzymanej fazy mineralnej. Badania mechaniczne oraz reometryczne wykazały, że moduł Younga oraz składowa rzeczywista modułu reometrycznego hydrożeli ulegających mineralizacji przy stosunków stężeń CaGP:MgGP 0:0.1 były przynajmniej trzy razy większe w porównaniu do wszystkich innych próbek. Obecność MgP w próbkach zmineralizowanych sprzyjała adhezji oraz żywotności komórek osteoblastycznych MC3T3-E1 i nie wpłynęła negatywnie na ich cytozgodność. Wyniki dowodzą, że można indukować mineralizację hydrożeli z gumy gellan za pomocą CaGP oraz MgGP i tym samym wpływać na skład mineralny oraz właściwości mechaniczne kompozytów hydrożelowych-ceramicznych przez zmodyfikowanie stosunków stężeń CaGP:MgGP.
The use of hydrogels as bone tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds enables incorporation of bioactive substances such as the mineralization-promoting enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In this study, gellan gum (GG) hydrogels containing ALP were mineralized with calcium phosphate (CaP) and magnesium phosphate (MgP) by incubation in mineralization solutions of calcium and magnesium glycerophosphate (CaGP, MgGP). Five different CaGP:MgGP concentration ratios were compared, namely 0.1:0, 0.075:0.025, 0.05:0.05, 0.025:0.075 and 0:0.1 (all values mol dm-3). CaP and MgP formation was confirmed by FTIR, Raman, SEM, EDS, ICP-OES, XRD, TGA and monitoring dry mass percentage changes. Ca was incorporated into mineral to a greater extent than Mg. Incorporation of increasing amounts of Mg into mineral formed led to changes in mineral deposit morphology. Mechanical and rheometric testing revealed that Young's modulus and storage modulus of hydrogels mineralized at a CaGP:MgGP concentration ratios of 0:0.1 were at least three times higher than those of all other samples. The presence of MgP in mineralized samples promoted attachment and vitality of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells and did not negatively impact cytocompatibility. The results prove the principle of enzymatic mineralization with CaP and MgP and adjusting the composition and mechanical properties of hydrogel-ceramic composites by altering the CaGP:MgGP concentration ratio.

Opis:
A new antenna of ‘crankshaft’ type has been installed in the Uragan-2M device in order to increase the plasma density and heating below the ion cyclotron frequency. Antenna operation is modelled by 1D code, which solves boundary problem for time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations in radially non-uniform plasma cylinder. In recent experiments with this antenna, the SXR, CV, OV and OII emission measurements indicate that the light impurity radiation barrier is overcame at this device. Plasma with a temperature of ~50 eV exists during a short period of a few milliseconds. Then the radiation collapse comes owing to strong infl ux of impurities to the plasma column. A new magnetic diagnostics has been installed at Uragan-3M. Using it the poloidal magnetic fi eld is measured and the shift of toroidal current in major radius is registered. A miniature pinhole camera array for spatially and temporally resolved measurements of soft X-ray (SXR) plasma emission has been recently installed on the U-3M. Different shapes of the SXR emission profi le has been observed in different discharge conditions.

Opis:
Hydrogel mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP) and antibacterial activity are desirable for applications in bone regeneration. Mineralization with CaP can be induced using the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP), responsible for CaP formation in bone tissue. Incorporation of polyphenols, plant-derived bactericidal molecules, was hypothesized to provide antibacterial activity and enhance ALP-induced mineralization. Three phenolic rich plant extracts from: (i) green tea, rich in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) (herafter referred to as EGCG-rich extract); (ii) pine bark and (iii) rosemary were added to gellan gum (GG) hydrogels and subsequently mineralized using ALP. The phenolic composition of the three extracts used were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MSn). EGCG-rich extract showed the highest content of phenolic compounds and promoted the highest CaP formation as corroborated by dry mass percentage meassurements and ICP-OES de-termination of mass of elemental Ca and P. All three extracts alone exhibited antibacterial activity in the following order EGCG-rich > PI > RO, respectively. However, extract-loaded and mineralized GG hydro-gels did not exhibit appreciable antibacterial activity by diffusion test. In conclusion, only the EGCG-rich extract promotes ALP-mediated mineralization.

The Radiation Technology Center from IPEN-CNEN/SP, Brazil, developed a revolutionary design and national technology, a small-sized continuous run and multipurpose industrial gamma irradiator, to be used as a demonstration facility for manufacturers and contract service companies, which need economical and logistical in-house irradiation system alternatives. Also, to be useful for supporting the local scientific community on development of products and process using gamma radiation, assisting the traditional and potential users on process validation, training and qualification of operators and radioprotection officers. The developed technology for this facility consists of a continuous tote box transport system, comprising a single concrete vault, where the automated transport system of products inside and outside of the irradiator utilizes a rotating door, integrated with the shielding, avoiding the traditional maze configuration. Covering 76 m2 of floor area, the irradiator design is a product overlap sources and the maximum capacity of cobalt-60 wet sources is 37 PBq. The performed qualification program of this multipurpose irradiator was based on AAMI/ISO 11137 standard, which recommends the inclusion of the following elements: installation and process qualification. The initial load of the multipurpose irradiator was 3.4 PBq with 13 cobalt-60 sources model C-188, supplied by MDS Nordion – Canada. For irradiator dose optimization, the source distribution was done using the software Cadgamma developed by IPEN-CNEN/SP. The polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) dosimeter system, certified by the International Dose Assurance Service (IDAS) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was used for irradiator dose mapping. The economic analysis, performance concerning with dose uniformity and cobalt-60 utilization efficiency were calculated and compared with other commercial gamma irradiators available on the market.

The paper shows that the low energy efficiency exploitation of technical systems to a large extent determines their negative impact on the environment and humans. On the basis of the energy balance equation shows that the decrease in efficiency due to the loss of energy during its conversion and the transmission and power factor with reduced electrical devices technical systems. Reduced power factor due to the fact that the technical system operation the power consumption of the drive motor on the shaft of these systems much less than its nominal value. Loss of energy and reducing power factor leads to contamination of the environment and reduction of human security in the operation of technical systems. The most effective way to improve the energy efficiency of operation is to improve the power factor by compensating the phase shift, which reduces the current consumption due to compensation of the reactive component of it. Experimental research in machine tool technology systems have shown that the application of the method of compensation of phase shift can significantly improve the energy efficiency of the operation of these systems. This significantly reduces the amount of power consumption, the value of its reactive component and the input current and greatly increasing the power factor of technical systems in their operation.

Satellite navigation systems are widely used in navigation for precise trajectory determination of transport equipment. In this article mathematical models and algorithms have been developed to solve the problems of precision and safety of satellite navigation. One of the problems is spoofing (substitution) – a situation in which a system (hardware, software, etc.) successfully masquerades as another by falsifying data system and performs illegal actions. What is considered in the paper is spoofing detection algorithm based on the analysis of a civil satellite signal generated by the two receivers but instead a fully functional Spoofer GNSS signal repeater was used. This work is intended to equip GNSS users and receiver manufacturers with authentication methods that are effective against unsophisticated spoofing attacks. The work also serves to refine the civilian spoofing threat assessment by demonstrating the challenges involved in mounting a spoofing attack.

The article discusses a new approach to the detection of GNSS spoofing, based on the use of satellite compass. Comparing the results of measurements of GNSS receivers of compass in two modes (normal mode of GNSS navigation and spoofing mode). The studies have shown, that in mode of spoofing attacks in both receivers of satellite compass we have the equality of coordinates, which in algorithm coordinate definitions, determine mathematical indeterminate form 0/0. This means getting out of the operating status of the satellite compass that can be used as an alarm “spoofing attack” to take appropriate security measures of GNSS navigation.
