Opis:
As a consequence of their structural complexity, the electron transport properties of Al-based complex metallic alloys scale as simple power laws of the number of atoms in the primitive unit cell. Furthermore, presence in energy space of localised, d-like states below the Fermi level is systematically observed, even in the absence of any transition metal constituting element. The relative intensity of this contribution to the total density of states correlates with the structural complexity of the compound. Thus, complexity plays a key role, via Hume-Rothery, hybridization effects and most probably hopping, in the selection, formation and stability of Al-based complex metallic alloys. The results are interpreted in terms of self-organized criticality. In order to promote discussion about the essence of the quasicrystalline state ("why are the atoms where they are?"), a speculative model is suggested.

Opis:
We present a new niche application of quasicrystalline powders that leads to a commercially successful development of polymer-matrix composites. The process is based upon selective laser sintering, which is one of the current most powerful additive manufacturing technologies in use in the mechanical industries. Characteristics of the materials produced, such as porosity, friction and wear against hard steel, are evaluated and compared to the state of the art. Insight into the production of metal-matrix composites, using a variant of the technology, is also given.

Fossil material from the lower Miocene collected in the basin lake of Beşkonak (Turkey) included 19 slabs showing 19 amphibian anuran tadpoles of rather large size, at Gosner stages 36–38. These well preserved specimens show many morphological and skeletal characters. They are here tentatively referred to the genus Pelobates. Two of these tadpoles show an unusual group of black roundish spots in the abdominal region, and a third similar group of spots is present in another slab but we were unable to state if it was associated with a tadpole or not. Several hypotheses can be proposed to account for these structures: artefacts; intestinal content (seeds; inert, bacterial or fungal aggregations; eggs); internal or external parasites; diseases; eggs produced by the tadpole. The latter hypothesis is discussed in detail and is shown to be unlikely for several reasons. However, in the improbable case where these spots would correspond to eggs, this would be the first reported case of natural paedogenesis in anurans, a phenomenon which has been so far considered impossible mostly for anatomical reasons (e.g., absence of space in the abdominal cavity).

Opis:
This work reports on the preparation of highly pure cyclo-polylactides (Mn ≈ 4 000 g • mol-1) by the optimization of the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction applied on α-azide-ω-alkyne linear polylactide (PLA) precursors. By adjusting parameters such as the rate of reactant addition and the catalyst loading, monocyclic PLA's with a degree of purity of 93 % are obtained in few minutes. Highly pure monocycles (purity as high as 99.9 %) are also possibly prepared in few hours.
Opisano optymalizację syntezy cyklopolilaktydów w katalizowanej miedzią(I) reakcji cykloaddycji azydku do alkinu (CuAAC), której celem było uzyskanie polimerów o wysokiej czystości iśrednim ciężarze cząsteczkowym Mn ≈ 4 000 g • mol-1. Do reakcji użyto prekursorów, którymi były liniowe α-azydo-ω-alkinowe polilaktydy (PLA). Dobrano warunki syntezy, takie jak szybkość dodawania reagenta oraz ilość używanego katalizatora, które pozwalają na otrzymanie w ciągu kilku minut monocyklicznego PLA o stopniu czystości 93 %. Prowadząc syntezę w ciągu kilku godzin można otrzymać monocykliczny polimer o czystości do 99,9 %.

The transmission electron microscopy characterization of various silicon and silicide fin structures intended for application in FinFET devices has been performed. The results showed that transmission electron microscopy is a very useful tool for optimization of manufacturing processes of fin nanostructures in FinFETs.

This paper presents the new-generation test bench SETHI, developed by ONERA, the French Aerospace Lab. SETHI is a medium range platform dedicated to environmental, scientific and security applications. The first part of this paper describes the system architecture, the development state and the future capabilities. A set of recent significant results are presented: these results cover various applications, such as high spatial resolution imaging, change detection between two acquisitions, biomass measurement in the rain forest, bistatic imaging and innovative measurements, such as air-to-air imaging or circular imaging.

(S)-(+)-4'-[(4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonylphenyl) thiocarbonylphenyl]-decyloxybenzoate (in short 10.OPOSMH) was studied by complementary methods. The substance shows rich polymorphism. In addition to ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic C* phases it possesses three ferrielectric sub-phases. Phase transitions between the phases were revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and static dielectric permittivity measurements. The aim of this paper was to study phase transitions and differences in dielectric spectra shown by different phases. Collective and molecular dynamics of all phases shown by 10.OPOSMH will be discussed in terms of theoretical models. Dielectric spectra of antiferroelectric phase show two characteristic dielectric relaxation modes: one connected with the molecular process (reorientation around the short axis) and the other originating from fluctuations of antiferroelectric order parameters.

We report on a detailed analysis of the superconducting properties of boron-doped silicon films grown along the 001 direction by gas immersion laser doping. This technique is proved to be a powerful technique to dope silicon in the alloying range 2-10 at.% where superconductivity occurs. The superconducting transitions are sharp and well defined both in resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The variation of $T_{c}$ on the boron concentration is in contradiction with a classical exponential dependence on superconducting parameters. Electrical measurements were performed in magnetic field on the sample with $c_{B}$ = 8 at.% (400 laser shots) which has the highest $T_{c}$ (0.6 K). No hysteresis was found for the transitions in magnetic field, which is characteristic of a type-II superconductor. The corresponding upper critical field was on the order of 1000 G at low temperatures, much smaller than the value previously reported. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ is very well reproduced by the linearized Gorkov equations neglecting spin effects in the very dirty limit. These measurements in magnetic field allow an estimation of the electronic mean-free path, the coherence length, and the London penetration depth within a simple two-band free electron model.
