    Opis:
    The text analyses the problem of pronunciation of Dutch [y] by Polish learners of Dutch. In the theoretical part the typical articulation of [y] in Dutch is described and the Dutch [y] is compared with other (front) vowels in Polish, Dutch, German and English to foresee the possible interference/transfer. The discussion follows to give an detailed evaluation of the wide range of errors the Polish speakers make pronouncing the Dutch [y]. The text closes with an attempt to use the results of the error evaluation in the pronunciation training.

    W artykule został poruszony problem wymowy niderlandzkich samogłosek [e], [o] i [y] przez osoby polskojęzyczne. Obok prostego zastąpienia danej niderlandzkiej napiętej samogłoski polską samogłoską regularnie pojawia się forma kombinowana z dodatkową półsamogłoską [j] lub [w] realizowaną po polskiej samogłosce. Szczegółowa analiza wskazuje, że poszczególne połączenia samogłoska+półsamogłoska mają różną frekwencję oraz że pojawiają się częściej wraz ze wzrastającym poziomem języka niderlandzkiego (od poziomu A2). Dodanie półsamogłoski można więc uważać za próbę imitacji napięcia (które nie jest w języku polskim cechą dystynktywną) i znak rozwijającej się sprawności audytywnej i artykulacyjnej.   In de tekst wordt de uitspraak van de Nederlandse klinkers [e], [y] en [o] door Poolstalige leerders behandeld. Naast een simpele subsitutie van de Nederlandse gespannen klinker door een Poolse (ongespannen) klinker, kan regelmatig worden vastgesteld dat de Nederlandse klinker gerealiseerd wordt als een combinatie van de Poolse klinker en de glijklank [j] of [w]. Gedetailleerde analyse van de data toont dat de frequentie van klinker+glijklank combinaties verschillend is en dat de invoeging van de glijklank gekoppeld is aan het niveau van het Nederlands (ze begint op A2-niveau). De glijklankinvoeging kan derhalve worden gezien als een poging om de spanning van de Nederlandse klinker te imiteren (spanning is geen distinctief kenmerk in het Pools), wat van de ontwikkeling van auditieve en articulatorische vaardigheden getuigt.
    In de tekst wordt de uitspraak van de Nederlandse klinkers [e], [y] en [o] door Poolstalige leerders behandeld. Naast een simpele subsitutie van de Nederlandse gespannen klinker door een Poolse (ongespannen) klinker, kan regelmatig worden vastgesteld dat de Nederlandse klinker gerealiseerd wordt als een combinatie van de Poolse klinker en de glijklank [j] of [w]. Gedetailleerde analyse van de data toont dat de frequentie van klinker+glijklank combinaties verschillend is en dat de invoeging van de glijklank gekoppeld is aan het niveau van het Nederlands (ze begint op A2-niveau). De glijklankinvoeging kan derhalve worden gezien als een poging om de spanning van de Nederlandse klinker te imiteren (spanning is geen distinctief kenmerk in het Pools), wat van de ontwikkeling van auditieve en articulatorische vaardigheden getuigt.
    The paper addresses the problem of the pronunciation of [e], [o] and [y] by Polish learners of Dutch. Next to a simple substitution of the three tense Dutch vowels by (lax) Polish vowels it can frequently be noted that an extra glide [j] or [w] is being added after the Polish vowel. The detailed analysis reveals that frequency of the vowel+glide combination differs and that the epenthesis of glides is correlated with learners’ level of Dutch (it starts around the A2 level). Adding the glide may therefore be seen as an attempt to imitate tension (as tension is not a distinctive feature in Polish) and proof of development of perception and pronunciation skills.

    Opis:
    To Cross the Border Between Languages: the Epenthesis of Glides [j] and [w] as an Attempt at Tension Imitation in the Pronunciation of [e], [o] and [y] by Polish Learners of Dutch The text analyses the problem of the pronunciation of [e], [o] and [y] by Polish learners of Dutch. Next to a simple substitution of the three tense Dutch vowels by – respectively – Polish [ɛ], [ɔ], [i] or [u] it can also be noted that sometimes an extra glide [j] or [w] is being added after the Polish vowel. It can be seen as an attempt to imitate tension as tension is not a distinctive feature in Polish. The analysis shows that frequency of the vowel+glide combination differs (it is the highest in the case of [e]) and that the epenthesis of glides is correlated with learners‘ Dutch language level. More precisely, around the A2 level, having learned to distinguish Dutch tense and lax vowels, learners try to imitate them using articulatory solutions their mother tongue provides. The occurrence of the vowel+glide combination can therefore be seen as a positive step in the development of auditory and articulatory abilities.
    In dem Text werden die Ausspracheprobleme der Niederländisch-lernenden Polen mit den Niederländischen Vokalen [e], [o] und [y] analysiert. Neben der einfachen Substitution von diesen drei Vokalen durch entsprechend das Polnische [ɛ], [ɔ] und [i]/[u], kann auch eine andere Ausspracheweise notiert werden, wobei nach dem Polnischen Vokal ein Gleitlaut ([j] oder [w]) hinzugefügt wird. Die weitere Analyse zeigt, dass die Frequenz der Gleitlautepenthese unterschiedlich ist (am höchsten ist sie im Falle vom [e]) und dass sie mit dem Niveau des Niederländischen korreliert. Genauer gesagt ist sie vor allem am A2-Niveau zu beobachten - auf diesem Niveau haben die Niederländisch-lernenden Polen die Niederländischen gespannten und ungespannten Vokalen auditiv zu unterscheiden gelernt, aber ihre artikulatorische Fähigkeiten sind noch unzureichend um einen gespannten Vokal korrekt zu realisieren. Sie versuchen also die Spannung nachzuahmen durch einen Gleitlaut hinzuzufügen.

    The text analyses the problem of pronunciation of Dutch diphthongs and vowel sequences by Polish learners of Dutch. In the theoretical part the articulation of both diphthongs and vowel sequences in Dutch is described and compared with rather limited ways to combine vowels in Polish to foresee the possible interference/transfer. The discussion follows to give a detailed evaluation of the wide range of errors the Polish speakers make pronouncing the Dutch diphthongs and vowel sequences. The text closes with an attempt to use the results of the error evaluation in the pronunciation training.
    Der Text analysiert das Problem der Aussprache niederländischer Diphthonge und Vokalfolgen durch Niederländisch-lernende Polen. Im theoretischen Teil wird die Artikulation sowohl von Diphthongen als auch von Vokalfolgen im Niederländischen beschrieben und mit den eher begrenzten Möglichkeiten Vokale im Polnischen zu kombinieren, verglichen um mögliche Interferenzen/Übertragungen vorherzusehen. In der anschließenden Diskussion wird das breite Spektrum der Fehler, die polnische Sprecher bei der Aussprache niederländischer Diphthonge und Vokalfolgen machen, detailliert bewertet. Der Text wird mit einigen Hinweisen abgeschlossen, die Ergebnisse der Fehlerauswertung für das Aussprachetraining zu nutzen.
