Opis:
Since their first screen appearances in the 1930s, zombies have enjoyed immense cinematic popularity. Defined by Romero’s 1968 Night of the Living Dead as mindless, violent, decaying and infectious, they successfully function as ultimate fiends in horror films. Yet, even those morbid undead started evolving into more appealing, individualized and even sympathetic characters, especially when the comic potential of zombies is explored. To allow a zombie to become a romantic protagonist, however, one that can love and be loved by a human, another evolutionary step had to be taken, one fostered by a literary association. This paper analyzes Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies, a 2013 film adaptation of Isaac Marion’s zombie novel inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It examines how Shakespeare’s Romeo helps transform the already evolved cinematic zombie into a romantic protagonist, and how Shakespearean love tragedy, with its rich visual cinematic legacy, can successfully locate a zombie narrative in the romantic comedy convention. Presenting the case of Shakespeare intersecting the zombie horror tradition, this paper illustrates the synergic exchanges of literary icons and the cinematic monstrous.

Opis:
The relationship between Prospero and Miranda is fairly typical for Shakespeare’s way of portraying parental authority and filial obligation. A strong and authoritative father, an absent mother and a (potentially) rebellious daughter are character types reused in many of his plays. In The Tempest, authority, power and ownership, be it political or domestic, are important themes. In criticism, Prospero is frequently discussed through the prism of his attitude to his “subordinates” - Ariel, Caliban and Miranda - and the play’s narrative is interpreted in the context of the theatre of power. Parental authority, a social construct, is a dynamic thing, and the Renaissance patterns discernible in Shakespeare’s plays are refashioned and changed in contemporary adaptations and appropriations of his plays. Informed by New Historicism and Cultural Materialism in relation to gender studies, this article seeks to examine the changing dynamics of the Prospero-Miranda relationship in three films - Derek Jarman’s (1979), Paul Mazursky’s (1982), and Julie Taymor’s (2010) - as well as Philip Osment’s 1988 play This Island’s Mine. Focusing on the issue of authority, power and ownership, the article aims at showing how stereotypical social and gender roles resonate with various political contexts of power.

Opis:
Grzegorz Wiśniewski’s 2012 Richard III in Teatr Jaracza in Łódź was a very successful production with critics and audiences alike. At the 2012 Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival it won the Golden Yorick, a prestigious Polish award for the best staging of a Shakespearean play in the season. Wiśniewski, a renown Polish theatre director and professor at the National Film School in Łódź, has his own way of understanding theatre, its role in culture, and Shakespeare’s place in it. Wiśniewski believes in the theatre of the middle path, as he calls it, that is neither classical/conservative, nor radically avantgarde. He wants to attract wide audiences and offer them intellectual and well-balanced cultural entertainment. Without diminishing the weight of such cultural and literary icons as Shakespeare, he vivisects texts to make productions that can easily speak to a contemporary audience. This paper analyzes Wiśniewski’s Richard III to show how the director manages to achieve balance between his own auteur power, the authority and complexity of Shakespeare’s text, and theatre’s cultural mission.

Opis:
In his Shakespearean productions Jan Klata tends to radically experiment with sets, texts, and contexts. He puts the plays in culturally and politically specific locations, experiments with bi- or multilingual productions, and incorporates other texts into the Shakespearean frame. In this way, he uses Shakespeare as a means to address contemporary problems and tensions that are vital for his geopolitical reality, exploring the issues of national identities, the cultural legacy of Europe and its nations, as well as past conflicts and present crises. Klata’s King Lear (Narodowy Teatr Stary, Kraków, 2014), set in the religious context of the Catholic Church and using mostly Polish language, with only decorative additions in foreign languages, does not engage in European politics with the same directness and force as his earlier productions. And yet, as I wish to argue, this performance is also strongly concerned with European identity, and may, therefore, be seen as a valid voice in the discussion on how Shakespearean productions help to understand our current-day reality.

Zachodzące procesy demograficzne skłaniają do analiz stylu życia i jego uwarunkowań wśród osób w wieku późnej dorosłości. W sferze aktywności zdrowotnej seniorów istnieje potrzeba wnikliwej diagnozy – zarówno dla celów opisu, wyjaśniania, jak i przede wszystkim tworzenia programów modyfikacji i promocji zdrowia. W artykule dokonano analizy specyfiki zachowań zdrowotnych osób w wieku senioralnym. Zaprezentowano podstawy teoretyczne i opis Kwestionariusza Zachowań Zdrowotnych dla Seniorów. Narzędzie służy do pomiaru zachowań zdrowotnych osób starszych (od 60 roku życia). Eksploracyjna i konfirmacyjna analiza czynnikowa ujawniła 5-czynnikową strukturę kwestionariusza.

Opis:
The current demographic processes invite an analysis of the lifestyle of people in late adulthood and its determinants. A thorough diagnosis of senior health is also needed, not only for the purposes of description and explanation, but also – above all – for the creation of health programs. The present study analyses the specificity of health behavior of people of senior age. It describes the Health-Related Behavior Questionnaire for Seniors (KZZ-S), a tool used to measure the health behaviors of seniors (i.e., people aged 60 and above), and presents its theoretical basis. The questionnaire has a five-factor structure, as revealed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. It consists of 24 items and allows the calculation of the overall rate of such health behaviors and behavioral categories as positive attitude to life, behavior related to physical health, attention to mental condition, behavior associated with prevention and treatment, and environmental behavior. A higher score indicates a higher level of behavior beneficial to health. In total, the participants in the study were 522 people diverse in terms of activity and life situation, and the aim was to determine the psychometric properties of the KZZ-S. The KZZ-S is a reliable and valid measure with satisfactory psychometric properties (Cronbach’s α was .87 for the whole test and ranged from .63 to .79 for its subscales; absolute stability determined by test-retest was .88).

Teaching is considered a highly stressful career and teacher wellbeing plays an important role in both teacher burnout and teacher satisfaction and achievement. The nature of teacher wellbeing is complex and is largely theoretical, but there are some universal factors that may contribute to the psychological functioning of teachers. The aim of the presented article is to discuss the theoretical foundations of wellbeing issues associated with the teaching profession, including risk and protective factors, and to present the measurement tools available. The article also highlights preventive activities, which can be carried out to support the wellbeing of people working in the teaching profession.

Only recently the development and positive changes after trauma experiences, especially in children and adolescents, have become a subject of research, although the trauma itself and its negative impact on the human condition have been known and explored for a long time. The aim of this study was to determine associations between perceived parental attitudes and positive changes after a traumatic experience. The research group consisted of 72 young people (36 boys and 36 girls) aged 10–17 years who were victims of road accidents. The research tools were the Personal Growth Questionnaire – KOW-27 developed by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Parental Attitudes Scale – SPR, version for young people, by M. Plopa. The respondents have experienced positive changes as a result of a negative life situation. The results showed a signifi cant, though varying, role of parental attitudes, especially attitudes of mothers, that were correlated with personal growth. Their meaning is associated not so much with the general index of posttraumatic growth than with each of its dimensions.

The aim of the study was to establish the role of posttraumatic growth for health behaviors of people in late adulthood period. The analyzed research group was 130 people in the age of 61-88 lat (M = 71,32; SD = 5,81), 60 were men (46,2% ) and 70 (53,8%) women. The group consisted of 70 generally healthy people – the participants of the Third Age University, and 60 patients of cardiology clinic. The research tools were Health Behaviors Inventory authored by Juczynski (2001) – to measure health behaviors, and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (authored by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), in polish adaptation of Ogińskia-Bulik and Juczyński (2010)) – to measure posttraumatic growth. The responded seniors exhibited an average level of posttraumatic growth and above-average level of health behaviors. Age did not differentiated the level of health behaviors. Gender and type of traumatic experience were associated with health behaviors. The correlation and regression analysis confirmed the role of gender, type of trauma and posttraumatic growth indicators in manifesting health behaviors by seniors. The importance of posttraumatic growth in predicting health behaviors was different depending on the category of health-related behaviors.

painting after World War II
Opis:
The topic of the paper is the idea of matter in Tadeusz Kantor’s painting after World War II, including metaphorical painting, the informel, and the painting of the matter (1945-1964). The artist defined matter as an indeterminate, universal foundation which is a vehicle of the attributes of all that can be perceived by the senses, both animate bodies and inanimate things. A starting point are Kantor’s own texts – his notes and publications reflecting particular stages of his artistic evolution, critical essays on art, as well as later statements referring to the period under scrutiny. The present analysis is an attempt to find out whether Kantor’s postulates were really reflected in his art. Its main goal is to reconstruct his line of reasoning concerning matter and focus on the activities rooted in his theories, which is why contemporary reception and interpretations of his painting have not been taken into account. The frame of reference includes philosophical and artistic ideas known to Kantor or available to the artistic circles of the period. The text has been divided into four parts corresponding to particular stages of the artist’s development: (1) 1945-1947, when Kantor was trying to find ways of artistic expression beyond traditional topics of painting, such as the human figure, (2) 1947-1954, the metaphorical period, when, as a result of his visit to the Palais de la Découverte, he tried to represent the world invisible to the eye, (3) 1955-1959, the informelperiod, when paint became for him an equivalent of the matter, a synecdoche, one substance symbolizing all of it, and (4) 1958-1964, painting of the matter, when he kept using also other substances added to paint and chose a “concrete” approach to the painting’s meaning. The authors argue that over the first two decades following World War II Kantor succeeded in creating a new kind of painting, corresponding to the present, in which matter was to be dominant. To achieve that goal, for many years he was experimenting with different ways of representing matter – its ruling forces and principles. His initial existential observations, which challenged the uniqueness of humans in the universe, were later supplemented by shocking contact with science at the Paris Museum of Inventions. In the next decade, Kantor stopped making references to science and accepted process as a basic method of reaching the ontological foundation of the world, i.e. “matter.” His art was no longer “production,” but turned into “action.” At the last stage under consideration, he decided that the painting must not present signs referring to reality beyond it. He rejected the idea of painting as illusion and mediation, claiming that the matter of art is concrete, that it becomes “what it is.”
