Opis:
We have investigated among−family variation in growth and quality traits of Polish larch [Larix decidua subsp. polonica (Racib.) Domin] from Góra Chełmowa and Bliżyn. Growth traits were measured several times during the 37 years of growth in a progeny test in Kórnik (52 15’N and 17 04’E), while quality traits were investigated at age 22. We have found significant among−family variation in survival rate at age 15; DBH at age 15, 20, 22 and 37; and stand productivity at age 22. Family heritability was high for DBH (0.6−0.8), except after the thinning (0.41). For basal area it was increasing from about 0.4 at age 15 to about 0.7 at age 37. The larch population from Góra Chełmowa is distinguished by a characteristic deformation of a lower trunk (saber−shape). Such a deformation was also observed in this experiment with a high family heritability (0.83). Other quality traits – self−prunning, branch thickness and branch length – did not vary among families. In all traits, the larch family from Bliżyn was better−performing than families from Góra Chełmowa. However, a high variation among tested families and high values of heritability estimates lend possibility of selecting best parents that could potentially be crossed with other highly productive ones of better quality to transmit into progeny other favorable traits of larch from Góra Chełmowa – high resistance to abiotic stresses and low susceptibility to larch cancer. Value of such progeny should be tested in the future.

Opis:
Field trials with open-pollinated progeny of Scots pine were established in 2004 at five climatically different sites of the Polish lowlands. This long-term experiment was aimed to compare the genetic variation and genetic value of the offspring of twenty two seedling seed orchards and two second-generation seed orchard with the offspring of the local so-called economic seed stands, which are the main source of seeds for artificial regeneration of Scots pine in Poland. The early evaluation of quantitative traits of cones, seeds and 1-year-old seedlings attests to remarkable variation between the studied populations. Significant linear correlatios were found between some of the studied traits.

Investigations were carried out on pollen grains of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) collected from trees at 1.5, 3, 4 km and control, 20 km from the Luboń factory producing mineral fertilisers. The percentage of germination of pollen formed close to the pollution source was ca 20% lower compared to the control pollen. Lowered vitality of the pollen was effected in changes of the structure of cytoplasmic membranes. Pollen from the polluted area contained ca 15% less total phospholipids, mainly phosphatidylcholine and phosphatytidylinositol and had a lower content of soluble proteins and less of low molecular antioxidants, such as thiols and ascorbic acid. Composition of total fatty acid in phospholipids fractions showed a significant reduction in the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids. Pollen originating from the polluted area and stored at -30°C showed considerably stronger degradation of cytoplasmic membranes than control.

Opis:
In 2004, abundant flowering of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was observed in two second- generation seed orchards: (1) ‘Outbreeding’, promoting crossing between clones of five geographically distant populations; and (2) ‘Kolonowskie’, restoring a population whose offspring exists only in an international experiment (IUFRO 1964/1968). In bothseed orchards, female strobili were produced by 91.3% and 91.7% of clones, represented by 64.1% and 55.5% of grafts, respectively, and statistically significant differences between clones were found in the number of mature cones. In the case of the seed orchard ‘Outbreeding’, the number of mature cones in individual clones was significantly correlated with latitude of the origin of maternal populations (r = 0.8826, p = 0.0470). The majority (95%) of cones in seed orchards ‘Outbreeding’ and ‘Kolonowskie’ were produced by only 28.2% and 38.5% of all clones, and 21.4% and 25.7% of all grafts, respectively. These data attest to a disparity between the level of genetic diversity in seed orchard progeny resulting from the observed numbers of cone-bearing clones and grafts and the genetic diversity expected from the actual participation of clones and grafts in seed orchard composition. The estimated seed production per 1 ha of seed orchard area in 2004 reached 21.05 kg for ‘Outbreeding’ and 21.72 kg for ‘Kolonowskie’.

Opis:
The biomass productivity of individual trees at age 14 years was investigated in the experiment with 8 provenances and 186 half−sib families of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). The aim of the study was to develop allometric equations and estimate heritability of tree biomass. We sampled 28 model trees and measured dry mass of their components, including roots (on 14 trees). A decreasing share of aboveground biomass was allocated to stems, and an increasing share to branches and foliage with increasing tree size. Also a decreasing share of total tree biomass was found in roots with increasing tree dimensions. Allometric equations involving diameter at breast height in combination with tree height were developed to model biomass of all components and whole tree. We used those equations to estimate tree biomass on the subset of research area, involving all provenances and 180 half−sib families. Heritability coefficients for tree biomass were the greatest for provenances (0.84), average for families (0.58) and the lowest for individual trees (0.18). However, estimates of family heritability varied by provenance (from 0.18 to 0.74). These findings suggest that the most efficient strategy for improvement of productivity in pedunculate oak would be selection of provenances and families within provenances.

Studies on female and male strobili production as well as on pollen production and viability were performed at a polluted (Luboń) and a control (Kórnik) sites. Female strobili bearing per tree and total length of male strobili produced per tree were significantly higher in Luboń than in Kórnik and the stand density and tree crown exposition to sunlight were likely responsible for that result. Percentage of pollen germination was not affected by any variables studied. Neither provenance nor provenance x site interactions were found.

The flowering and graft mortality of Norway spruce clones of Istebna origin was only slightly different from clones of other origin in the same seed orchard. The negative effect ofmoving Istebna clones from the south to the north of their origin was probably compensated by moving them from a higher altitude to lowland. There is a danger that the complete loss of several clones, observed in the seed orchard with time, may really decrease the expected level of genetic variation in the progeny. It is recommended that the mortality of grafts and the reduction in the number of clones in the seed orchard should be under permanent observation.

The abundant flowering, observed in 2004 in a model outbreeding seed orchard established in Kórnik, Poland, promoted crossing between clones of five geographically distant populations of Norway spruce. The clones were selected from a group of ca. 1100 provenances participating in the international IUFRO 1964/68 experiment and performing best in terms of growth traits and adaptability. In the seed orchard, 91.3% of clones and 64.1% of grafts produced female and/or male strobili. Statistically significant differences between the clones were only found in the number of mature cones produced. The mean number of mature cones in individual clones was also significantly correlated with the latitude of the place of origin of maternal populations (r = 0.88, p = 0.047). The nearly equal percentages of clones representing each of the five populations in the outbreeding seed orchard (from 23.2 to 17.5%) resulted finally in the highly unequal production of full seeds by each population (from 62.9 to 0.7%). These data provide evidence to suggest that the level of genetic diversity in the progeny, expected from the number of growing clones, diverges from the level resulting from the contribution of clones to the full seed production which is an effective measure of the genetic composition of progeny. To avoid this divergence, an outbreeding seed orchard could be established with unequal proportions of clones from different provenances, considering the knowledge of their flowering phenology, and individual variation in flowering and cone production.

Since the beginning of XIX century a considerable number of Douglas fir populations from North America were introduced to many European countries. In France, Douglas fir is still going to increase significantly its participation in growing stock and wood harvest. There are also some countries (e.g. the Netherlands), where the interest in breeding and silviculture of Douglas fir have been decreased in last decades. The data from the European literature was collected to show a current volume stock, growth increment, gene resources and qualified seed sources of Douglas fir in the outlook of the future role of the species in European forest economy. A short outlook on the breeding programs of Douglas fir working out in several European countries was also presented.
