Opis:: In the last few years there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of visual data to be searched and retrieved. Typically, images are described by their textual content (TBIR) or by their visual features (CBIR). However, these approaches still present many problems. The hybrid approach was recently introduced, combining both characteristics to improve the benefits of using text and visual content separately. In this work we examine the use of the Self Organizing Maps for content-based image indexing and retrieval. We propose a scoring function which eliminates irrelevant images from the results and we also introduce a SOM variant (ParBSOM) that reduces training and retrieval times. The application of these techniques to the hybrid approach improved computational results.

Opis:: The corrosion enhancement due to plasma post-oxidation subsequent to plasma nitriding of the samples of low alloy annealed steel AISI 4140 was evaluated. The plasma nitriding was carried out at ≈570°C for 1-3 h in an atmosphere of 75% H₂ and 25% N₂. After this process post-oxidation at ≈450°C in a gas mixture, air and dry air-like was conducted for an hour. The treated samples were characterized using the XRD, SEM, AFM, potentiodynamic polarization and Vickers microhardness tests. The outcome of combined processes showed the presence of ε and γ' nitrided phases in the inner compound layer and in the outer one mostly of magnetite phase and barely visible of hematite one without using H₂ in the post-oxidation process. Also in these processes, the corrosion potential proved to be lower in the treated specimens than the untreated ones, and the corrosion current decreased up to one order of magnitude when treated in environment air and air-like ambient.

Opis:: With incident fluences of ≈ $10^{12}$ atoms/$cm^2$ aluminium samples have been plasma immersion ion implanted with either pure nitrogen or argon/nitrogen mixtures at temperatures around 450°C. X-ray diffraction studies have validated the formation of the cubic phase of AlN, in samples treated with both the gas mixtures and pure nitrogen. Likewise, the presence of the hexagonal phase of AlN has been detected when either pure nitrogen or a 70%N/30%Ar mixture have been used. The signature peak of AlN has also been confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy. The maximal microhardness values were found in samples treated with the mixture. The maximal roughness was achieved with the equal part mixture in all cases, although increasing with the implantation pulse width up to a 300 nm peak at 150 μs. The latter critical value remains invariant under the pure nitrogen plasma treatment, provided that implantation periods in the order of 4.5 h are carried out.

Opis:: The annealed low alloy 4140 steel samples have been nitrided for different treatment periods (1-6 h) in an RF inductive plasma discharge with very low bias voltage ( ≈ 400 V). The resulting nitrided layer has been observed by means of an optical microscope whereas the nitride phases have been characterised by X-ray analysis. The corrosion response, assessed by the potentiodynamic tests in the 3.5% NaCl solution, presents both higher noble potential values and lower corrosion rates when compared with the untreated sample. The Vickers microhardness tests values show an appreciable increment compared to that of the untreated sample. The process is characterized by a high overall efficiency because similar average Vickers tests values were obtained, no matter for how long the treatment was extended. Likewise, the scanning electron micrographs confirmed no appreciable size evolution of the compound layer microstructure at different times of treatment.

Opis:: Chemical processes use to be non-minimum phase systems. Thereby, they are a challenge for control applications. In this paper, fuzzy state feedback is applied in the Van de Vusse reaction that has an inverse response. The control design has an integrator to enhance the control performance by eliminating the steady-state error when a step reference is applied. An anti-windup action is used to reduce the undershoot in the system response. In practice, it is not possible to have always access to all the state variables. Thus, a fuzzy state observer is implemented via LMIs. Frequently, the papers that show similar applications present some comments about disturbance rejection. To eliminate the steady-state error when a ramp reference is used, in this work, a second integrator is aggregated. Now, the anti-windup also reduces the overshoot generated due to the usage of two integrators in the final application.

Opis:: Due to the problem that represents the accelerated production of waste from the consumption of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), it becomes necessary to look for alternative solutions; chemical recycling is a suitable method for conversion into a material with potential application in concrete additive, such as unsaturated polyester resins; with the above improvements and conservation of non-renewable raw materials can reduce the environmental impact. This investigation was focused on obtaining the synthesis of a polymeric resin by the method of glycolysis, and their characterization by Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR); the results show that the recycled materials (PET and its processing) are similar to reagents made from primary materials so that it is considered feasible to use in the intended application.

Opis:: This paper discusses silica surface modification by a process involving a two-step reaction: anchoring of a silylating agent, followed by an attachment of a 4-amino-2-mercaptopyrimidine molecule. The modified material (Si-BP) was successfully characterized by the FTIR spectra, which revealed amine absorption bands, and through 13C and 29Si NMR spectra, which confirm the proposed structure of the modified silica (Si-BP). Si-BP was used to extract cadmium and lead from an aqueous medium at 298 K. The Si-BP kinetics towards metal ions was very fast, i.e., about 10 minutes, although extraction was significantly impaired at pH 3. The series of adsorption isotherms were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation and the maximum extraction capacity was 0.193 and 0.387 mmol g-1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. An analysis of the Ř values lead to the inference that the resulting metal ligand complex was type 1:1.

Opis:: This review discusses the potential of alkali-activated materials obtained from mineral waste. A brief historical background on alkali-activated materials is presented. Recent advances in the development of binders obtained from mineral wastes and alkali-activated solutions are described. The scope of this state of the art review is to identify current knowledge in support that mineral waste can be used for the production of alkali-activated binders. In addition, this review identifies the chemical activators that can be effectively utilized for such purposes in the age when wastes are still viewed by industry as dis-posable. Some mineral wastes which are discussed can be viewed as a new resource for recycling and recovery which will offer important economic and social benefits.

Opis:: O texto é uma reflexão sobre as noções de risco, vulnerabilidades, desigualdades, violências e seus impactos nas sociedades em tempos de pandemia. Abordar as interrelações entre esses conceitos e os fatores que fragilizam as relações sociais é uma problemática que ainda carece de discussão. O objetivo foi analisar algumas proposições conceituais e epistemológicas da teoria da sociedade global de risco de Ulrich Beck, da teoria dos sistemas e o conceito de risco de Niklas Luhmann e a produção de sentidos sobre riscos de Mary Jane Spink, em consonância com a relação paradoxal entre autonomia e vulnerabilidade no “pensar e agir” humano de Paul Ricoeur. Aborda também, o cenário de aprofundamento das desigualdades e das violências entre os grupos em situação de vulnerabilidade, em tempos de pandemia, mais evidente em função do crescimento das taxas de homicídios nos últimos três anos. Essas análises ajudam a entender as inseguranças com as quais a sociedade de risco diariamente se defronta, como uma pandemia, que podem fragilizar ainda mais as condições básicas de vida das populações em situação de vulnerabilidade e ampliar as desigualdades e violências.
This text is a reflection on the perceptions of risk, social inequality, violence, and their impacts on societies in times of pandemic. Addressing the interrelationships between these concepts and the factors that weaken social relations is a problem that still lacks discussion. In discussing these concepts, the aim of the present text is to analyze, although briefly, some conceptual and epistemological proposals and implications of the thought of Ulrich Beck and Niklas Luhmann on reflexive modernization, global risk societies and social systems. In addition, the text examines the social psychologist Mary Jane Spink’s considerations on risk from the point of view of the production of meanings. The text also discusses the paradoxical relationship between autonomy and vulnerability in the human "thinking and acting" of the Paul Ricoeur. The scenario of deepening inequalities and violence among vulnerable groups in these times of pandemic, most evident due to the growth in homicide and unemployment rates, is also discussed in the last three years. These analyses help to understand the insecurity that the risk society faces on a daily basis, such as a pandemic, which can further weaken the basic living conditions of vulnerable populations while expanding inequalities and violence.

Opis:: Several species of Solanum produce secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the inhibitory activity of Solanum chrysotrichum, S. erianthum, S. torvum and S. rostratum against phytopathogenic Curvularia lunata was determined. Methanol extracts from roots, stems, leaves and fruits were evaluated by the method of mycelial inhibition on agar and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined on a liquid medium. To increase the antimicrobial activity, the combined activity of the most active extracts for each phytopathogen was also determined (a combination of intra and interspecies extracts). The results showed that 12 of the 16 methanolic extracts of Solanum species had antifungal effects against C. lunata. The extracts of S. rostratum and S. erianthum developed the highest activity (~80% inhibition and 28.4 MIC μg . ml–1), even, equal to or greater than, the reference fungicide. The mixture of the active extracts of S. chrysotrichum and S. torvum increased their activity. Various extracts affected the macro and microscopic morphology and most of them reduced the number of conidia of the fungus. This resulted in the capacity to control the vegetative growth and reproduction of C. lunata, the causal fungus of corn leaf spot disease.
