Opis:
The adsorption of rhodium (III) ions onto gallic acid formaldehyde resin in a batch adsorber has been studied. Adsorption experiments were carried out by agitating 1 g resin particles with 1000 ml of Rh (III) ion solution of the initial concentrations from 16.54 to 88.80 mg/l (293K, 1M HCl). Using Langmuir isotherm, a single stage batch adsorber was designed for different adsorbent mass/treated effluent volume ratios. An initial rhodium concentration of 100 g/m³ is assumed and the required amount of resin particles to recover metal ion content by 75%-99% at various volumes of effluents. For a single-stage adsorption system, thus the adsorbent demonstrated recovery capacity. For example, 1 m³ of solution is to be treated; the required masses of gallic acid resol resin are 25 kg for 75% rhodium removal. In order to recover 90% of the rhodium (III) at various volumes of solution which having different metal concentrations, the required amount of gallic acid resin was calculated. For example, 1 m³ of solution is to be treated, the required amounts of resin particles to reduce the rhodium content by 90% increased from 75 to 76 kg with increase in the initial rhodium metal concentration from 0.1 to 100 g/m³. Through such a projection, a real single stage adsorption system can be designed.

Opis:
Aim: Several studies suggest that coal miners are under risk of severe health problems such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, renal, hematological and musculoskeletal disorders. However, there are limited data on biochemical changes in underground workers. In our study we aimed to evaluate the association between serum homocysteine (Hcy), vitamin B12, cystatin C and folate levels in the blood of underground coal miners. Materials and Methods: Eighty one coal miners who work as underground or surface workers were recruited into our study. The study population was divided into two groups: the surface worker group (control group, n=33) and the underground worker group (n=48). The folate, vitamin B12, Hcy, cystatin C levels and body mass indexes (BMI) of both groups were measured and compared. Serum folate, Hcy and vitamin B12 levels were measured with a competitive chemiluminescence immunassay. Serum levels of cystatin C were determined by the latex particle-enhanced turbidimetric method using a cystatin C kit. Urea values were measured with a kinetic method on an automated analyzer. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the underground workers and surface workers in the urea, cystatin C and vitamin B12 levels. High serum Hcy levels and low folate levels were found in underground workers compared with those in surface workers. The correlation between Hcy and folate levels was also statistically significant. Similarly, there was also a significant correlation between Hcy and vitamin B12, and between Hcy and cystatin C levels. Conclusions: Elevated Hcy levels may be associated with underground working but further research is necessary to understand the relation between elevated Hcy and increased prevalence of health problems in coal miners.

Opis:
Cholesterol takes part significantly in many biological mechanisms and as important component for manufacture of bile acids, steroid hormones, and several fat-soluble vitamins. To determine magnetic properties of cholesteryl heptanoate $(C_{34}H_{58}O_2)$ which is an important cholesteryl ester in human life and new technology, the single crystals of cholesteryl heptanoate were grown by slow evaporation of concentrated ethyl acetate solution and the grown single crystals were irradiated at room temperature with $\text{}^{60}Co \gamma $ ray. The radical produced by gamma irradiation has been investigated in the range of temperatures 123-330 K for different orientations of the crystal in a magnetic field by EPR. Radiation damage center was attributed to radical $ĊH_α CH_{2β}$. The g factor and hyperfine coupling constants have slight dependence on temperature and evident dependence on the orientation of the magnetic field. Determined g factor and hyperfine coupling constants for the radical $ĊH_α CH_{2β}$ were found to be anisotropic with the average values $g_{av}=2.0036$, $(a_{CH_\alpha})_{av}=14.52 G, (a_{CH_{2\beta}})_{av}=25.78 G$.

In order to understand the electronic properties of the organic Schottky diode, ITO/TPD/Al and ITO/SAM/TPD/Al organic Schottky devices were fabricated to obtain current-voltage characteristics. From the slopes and y-axis intercepts of the plots, the values of the ideality factor, barrier heights of the ITO/SAM/TPD/Al diode were determined as 2.03 and 0.56 eV, respectively. The surface characterizations of modified and unmodified ITO were performed via atomic force microscopy.

Opis:
Iodine is an essential element for the production of thyroid hormones. In recent years, it has been suggested that excessive consumption of iodine may play a role in the pathogenesis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). In addition, studies have suggested that high iodine consumption is an important risk factor for the formation of a BRAF mutation in the thyroid gland. A prospectively designed study included 132 cases scheduled for thyroidectomy for various reasons. Urine iodine levels of all patients were examined before the operation. The iodine excretion levels of the patients were grouped according to the median urinary iodine concentration determined in community screenings (those with <100 µg L-1 low iodine excretion, those with 100-199 µg L-1 normal iodine excretion, those with 200-299 µg L-1 high iodine excretion). Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the post-operative pathology results. As a result of thyroid histopathology, benign (n: 44), PTC (n: 88) (BRAF (+): 44 and BRAF (-): 44) cases were included in the study. BRAF mutations in patients diagnosed with PTC were evaluated using the “Real Time PCR Melting Curve Analyzer” method. The relationship between urinary iodine excretion levels and clinical, histopathological and BRAF positivity was examined. In our study, no difference was found in urinary iodine excretion between patients with and without PTC. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was observed more frequently in patients with PTC (p=0.023). In addition, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was statistically more frequently detected in the BRAF (-) group compared to the BRAF (+) and control group (p=0.034). Despite studies suggesting that high iodine consumption is important in PTC pathogenesis, we did not find a relationship between the mutation and iodine consumption, which plays an important role in the development of PTC.
