Opis:
We report the first systematic study of the temperature dependence of optically induced birefringence in benzene, toluene, nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene, 2-bromoanisole, 2-methylbenzaldehyde, 3-methylbenzaldehyde, 3-chlorobenzaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde. The optical Kerr constants, relative to benzene, are measured in a broad temperature range. Refractive indices and densities of the liquids for the temperatures studied were also determined. For the above liquids the T$\text{}^{-1}$ temperature dependences of the optical Kerr constants have been found. From our measurements, the molar Kerr constants and the effective molecular anisotropies were calculated as functions of temperature. The mean values of the second-order optical hyperpolarizability have also been determined.

Corrections to the molecular-field ground-state energies of the Heisenberg model with isotropic biquadratic interactions (spin S=3/2) are calculated in the (1/z)$\text{}^{1}$-approximation using the diagrammatic technique based on the Wick reduction theorem (z is the number of spins interacting with any given spin). The present results for the antiferri- and antiferromagnetic phases complete the previously obtained data for the antiquadrupolar, ferri- and ferromagnetic phases. From among the boundaries between different ground states only that between the antiferri- and antiferromagnetic phases is shifted with respect to its molecular-field value.

The paper reports the results of lidar measurements performed in the lower troposphere during several measurement sessions in Athens (Greece) in 2000. For the sake of comparison, results of a similar study performed in Kołobrzeg (Poland) in 2001 are also given. These data indicate that the exhaust gases produced by motor transportation in the cities resulted in the formation of an inversion layer. The rate of convection of the inversion layer depends on the intensity of sunlight, the strength of winds and the morphology of the land. The inversion layer reaches the highest altitudes in the middle of summer, lower in early and late summer and the lowest in autumn. Over the sea the inversion layer altitude extends to several meters, but on moving inland it rises to a fewh undred meters.

Opis:
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a sensing technology whieh has application in building the Digital Terrain Model (DTM). A point cloud generated from laser scanning makes up the so-called large dataset, which is difficult and sometimes even impossible to use directly. Import of LiDAR point cloud into appropriate software and its processing is time-consuming and demands high computing power. Therefore, it is advisable to optimize the volume of observation results which make up the point cloud. The following paper presents operation of a modified algorithm for optimization of points' number in a large dataset [Błaszczak W., 2006]. The optimization involves reduction and uses existing cartographic generalization methods. The optimized dataset was filtered, and during the process the points representing the terrain were separated from data representing non-ground elements. Filtration was carried out with the application of a proposed new method including trend line in search belts, and the laser power used to register points. The optimized and filtered data set was then used to build a DTM. The results obtained encourage further detailed study of theoretical and empirical character.

Studies on the soil seed banks of fallow lands of different ages were carried out on poor soil abandoned fields and in a fresh coniferous forest in north-eastern Poland. The size and diversity of seed banks was studied with the seedling emergence method. Species abundance (i), density (ii), number of species from different biological groups (iii) and distribution and mean LI value (iv) were analysed as the function of fallow land age. It was found that: (i) species diversity, number of species and ln of density are linear declining function of the fallow land age; (ii) for approx. 25 years the share of diaspores of identified species groups has been relatively similar. Seed banks of 40-50-year-old fallow lands are dominated by Calluna vulgaris, while the seed bank of the old fresh coniferous forest is dominated by dicotyledonous perennials and grasses; (iii) within the first 50 years of succession the persistence of seed banks measured by the Longevity Index increases gradually.

Opis:
Initially, tobacco was considered as a decorative plant and only later began to be treated as a herb with special therapeutic properties. With time, it was found that tobacco had strong insecticidal and addictive properties. There also occurred reports about the negative influence of tobacco on human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies smoking as a chronic, progressive disease which is also ‘contagious’. It is also considered to be a neurobiotic addiction. Nicotine addiction does not cause changes in the behaviour or functioning of a smoker; however, it adversely affects his or her general health status and the health status of people within their environment. Passive smoking (so-called ETS – Environmental Tobacco Smoke), which means accompanying smokers negatively influences the health of passive smokers. Environmental tobacco smoke, on the one hand, is the result of spontaneous cigarette burning and, on the other hand, the result of the side-stream of cigarette smoke, as well as the smoke exhaled by active smokers. Health personnel should clearly and convincingly present the data concerning the adverse results of smoking, as well as the dangers of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, thereby making their patients aware that breaking their addiction will not only be beneficial for their own health, but will also protect non-smokers in their environment from the adverse effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Opis:
Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is one of the LIDAR technologies (Light Detection and Ranging). It provides information about the terrain in form of a point cloud. During measurement is acquired: spatial data (object’s coordinates X, Y, Z) and collateral data such as intensity of reflected signal. The obtained point cloud is typically applied for generating a digital terrain model (DTM) and a digital surface model (DSM). For DTM and DSM generation it is necessary to apply filtration or classification algorithms. They allow to divide a point cloud into object groups (e.g.: terrain points, vegetation, etc.). In this study classification is conducted with one extra parameter–intensity. The obtained point groups were used for digital spatial model generation. Classification is a time and work consuming process, therefore there is a need to reduce the time of ALS point cloud processing. Optimization algorithm enables to decrease the number of points in a dataset. In this study the main goal was to test the impact of optimization on the results of a classification. Studies were conducted in two variants. Variant 1 includes classification of the original point cloud where points are divided in the groups: roofs, asphalt road, tree/bushes, grass. On variant 2 before classification, an optimization algorithm was performed in the original point cloud. Obtained from these two variants object groups were used to generate a spatial model, which was then statistically analyzed.

Wprowadzenie. Cel pracy. Celem badań było określenie poziomu higieny jamy ustnej dzieci w wieku wczesnoszkolnym, zamieszkujących teren miasta i tereny wiejskie, posiadających uzębienie mieszane i uzębienie stałe, leczonych ortodontycznie za pomocą aparatów ruchomych i stałych. Materiał i metoda. Niestety, u około 30% dzieci leczonych ortodontycznie, u których zabiegi higieniczne jamy ustnej prowadzone były nieregularnie, opiekunowie zaobserwowali pogorszenie higieny jamy ustnej. Wnioski. Nieprzestrzeganie podstawowych zaleceń pielęgnacyjnych przekazanych przez lekarza specjalistę w gabinecie ortodontycznym jest główną przyczyną powodującą występowanie chorób i infekcji jamy ustnej. Uwagę zwraca brak właściwych postaw rodziców, dotyczących edukacji i kontroli swoich dzieci kształtujących nawyki pielęgnacji zębów, oraz niewłaściwa postawa samego pacjenta wobec higieny. Zwiększona kontrola osoby dorosłej nad wykonywaniem czynności higienicznych jamy ustnej dzieci zwiększy efektywność leczenia i przyczyni się do zmniejszenia ryzyka wystąpienia chorób jamy ustnej.
Introduction. Orthodontic treatment is the recipe for a beautiful smile, self-acceptance and improvement of a position in the society. However, many people do not realize that the acquisition of such an effect is not possible without special attention to the oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the level of oral hygiene of children with mixed and permanent dentition in early school age, during orthodontic treatment with removable and fixed orthodontic appliance, living in the urban and rural region. Materials and methods. The study included 105 children (43 from the rural area and 62 urban area) at the age of 6–12 years. Information about hygiene and oral health were obtained using a questionnaire completed by the parents/guardians of children during orthodontic treatment at the Clinic of Maxillofacial Orthopedics, of Dental Clinical Centre in Lublin Results. In the most cases the oral hygiene was satisfactory and did not contribute to the deterioration of oral health. Unfortunately, in about 30% of children during orthodontic treatment, whose oral hygiene procedures were carried out irregularly, caregivers observed deterioration of oral hygiene. Conclusions. The main reason causing the occurrence of diseases and infections of the mouth was the failure to comply with the recommendations of care provided by a specialist in orthodontic office. Lack of proper attitudes of parents regarding the education and control of their children’s dental care habits and poor attitude of the patient to health is significantly. Increased control over the performance of children oral hygiene by an adult will increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Opis:
Terrestrial laser scanning is a technology that enables to obtain three-dimensional data - an accurate representation of reality. During scanning not only desired objects are measured, but also a lot of additional elements. Therefore, unnecessary data is being removed, what has an impact on efficiency of point cloud processing. It can happen while single point clouds are displayed - user decides what he wants to deleted and does it manually, or by using tools provided in dedicated for point cloud processing softwares. In Leica Geosystems Cyclone - software used here in tests, user can apply tools e.g. for merging or unification of point clouds. Both of them change the separate points clouds into one points cloud, however unification can be executed with reduction - low, medium, high, highest or no reduction at all. It should be noted, that the modeled objects may have complex structure and unification with selected type of reduction can have a very big impact on the result of modeling. In such situation it is desirable to apply different types of reduction. In this article authors propose to apply an optimization algorithm on unified point clouds. Unification conducted by means of Cyclone Leica Geosystems (v.7.3.3) enables to merge point clouds and reduced the number of points. The point elimination is determined mainly by spacing between points. It may leads to loose of important points - representing some essential elements of scanned objects or area. Applying optimization algorithm, especially for complex objects, may help to reduce the number of points without losing the information necessary for proper modeling.

symptomatic heel spur
Opis:
Purpose: The experiment was designed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of focused shockwave and radial shockwave in symptomatic heel spur treatment. Postural balance tests were used to ensure the objectivity of evaluations. Methods: Forty three patients with symptomatic heel spur were divided into two comparative groups that received respectively focused shockwave therapy (the FSWT group; 2000 impulses, 4 Hz, 0.4 mJ/mm2 ) and radial shockwave therapy (the RSWT group; 2000 impulses, 8 Hz, 5 bars + 2000 impulses, 8 Hz, 2.5 bars). Each patient received 5 treatments at weekly intervals. Before therapy started and 1, 3, 6 and 12 weeks after it ended, the intensity of pain experienced by the patients was assessed and static balance tests were performed on a force platform. Results: Successive measurements showed that the intensity of all kinds of pain under consideration was decreasing gradually and statistically significantly in both groups. The percentage reduction in pain intensity was similar between the groups. The standard deviation of the COP in the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions, 95% confidence ellipse area and COP velocity kept varying throughout the experiment, but in none of the groups changes were statistically significant. Conclusions: Focused shockwave therapy and radial shockwave therapy improve the well-being of patients with symptomatic heel spur significantly and comparably. Posturography cannot deliver unambiguous data for tracking changes that the two therapies induce in these patients.
