Opis:
For the first time a molecule of 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole containing benzoxazole and stilbene groups is applied as a scintillator dopant acting as a wavelength shifter. In this article a light yield of the plastic scintillator, prepared from styrene doped with 2 wt% of 2,5-diphenylbenzoxazole and 0.03 wt% of 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole, is determined to be as large as 60% ± 2% of the anthracene light output. There is a potential to improve this value in the future by the optimization of the additives concentrations.

The polystyrene doped with 2,5-diphenyloxazole as a primary fluor and 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole as a wavelength shifter prepared as a plastic scintillator was investigated using positronium probe in wide range of temperatures from 123 to 423 K. Three structural transitions at 260, 283, and 370 K were found in the material. In the o-Ps intensity dependence on temperature, the significant hysteresis is observed. Heated to 370 K, the material exhibits the o-Ps intensity variations in time.

Cadmium pyroniobiate (CNO) is the ferroic material with unusual diffuse phase diagram which includes both relaxor and nanocluster domains. We present the data for CNO crystals with several admixtures of paramagnetic ions studied on X and S microwave bands at zero-external magnetic field and classical EPR conditions. Our results lead to an assertion of a ferroelectric resonance effect due to "electronic ferroelectricity". The data fit well to the Falicov-Kimball theoretical model applicable to strongly-correlated-electron or mixed-valence systems.

Opis:
Animals are important reservoir of Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogen causing serious infections in both humans and livestock. However, data on invasiveness of L. monocytogenes strains of animal origin is very scarce. Ability of 18 L. monocytogenes strains of animal origin to invade HT- 9 cells was investigated. Plaque forming assay was used to assess invasiveness and ability of the pathogen to spread in the cell line. Almost 40% of L. monocytogenes strains were weakly invasive. It was shown that strains from serogroup 4b exhibited the highest invasiveness, whereas serogroup 1/2b consisted of strains of invasiveness below 0.0001%. Analysis of translated inlA and inlB gene sequences revealed no premature stop codons. Lineage-specific mutations in low invasive strains were identified within inlA and inlB sequences. Our results demonstrate high incidence of low invasive animal L. Monocytogenes strains, which may be at least partly explained by unique point mutations in the InlA and InlB.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was an assessment of LiDAR point clouds for automating the mapping of land use and land cover changes, mainly land abandonment and the process of secondary forest succession. Detailed information about land cover was determined based on airborne laser scanning data. The presented study focuses on the analysis of the spatial range and structure of vegetation. The study area was located in Milicz district in the voivodeship of Lower Silesia – the central west part of Poland. The areas of interest were parcels where agricultural land had been abandoned and forest succession processes had progressed. Analysis of the spatial range of the secondary forest succession was carried out using a reclassified nDSM. Reclassification of the nDSM was done using > 1 m, > 2 m and > 3 m for the pixel values, representing the height of vegetation above the ground. Parameters such as height of vegetation, standard deviation of height and cover density were calculated, to show the process of the increase in forest succession on abandoned agricultural land. The results confirmed a discrepancy between the cadastral data and the actual use of the plots. In the study area, more than three times as much forested and wooded area was detected than had been recorded in official databases. Analyses based on airborne laser scanning point clouds indicated significant diversity in the vertical and horizontal structure of vegetation. The results demonstrated gradual succession of greenery in the research area.

Opis:
The J-PET detector being developed at the Jagiellonian University is a positron emission tomograph composed of the long strips of polymer scintillators. At the same time, it is a detector system that will be used for studies of the decays of positronium atoms. The shape of photomultiplier signals depends on the hit time and hit position of the gamma quantum. In order to take advantage of this fact, a dedicated sampling front-end electronics that enables to sample signals in voltage domain with the time precision of about 20 ps and novel reconstruction method based on the comparison of examined signal with the model signals stored in the library has been developed. As a measure of the similarity, we use the Mahalanobis distance. The achievable position and time resolution depend on the number and values of the threshold levels at which the signal is sampled. A reconstruction method as well as preliminary results are presented and discussed.

Bears undergo some significant changes reflected in blood values during winter season. The most significant are reduced urea and increased creatinine, by some authors considered to be physiological indicators of hibernation. Studied group of six captive brown bears (Ursus arctos) showed decreased activity in winter but were accepting food and walked outdoors. Blood parameters assessed in February 2011 revealed mean values of leucocytes and neutrophils as significantly lower, and creatinine significantly increased compared to captive and free living bears sampled during other seasons when bears are active.

Opis:
Nowadays, in positron emission tomography (PET) systems, a time of fl ight (TOF) information is used to improve the image reconstruction process. In TOF-PET, fast detectors are able to measure the difference in the arrival time of the two gamma rays, with the precision enabling to shorten signifi cantly a range along the line-of-response (LOR) where the annihilation occurred. In the new concept, called J-PET scanner, gamma rays are detected in plastic scintillators. In a single strip of J-PET system, time values are obtained by probing signals in the amplitude domain. Owing to compressive sensing (CS) theory, information about the shape and amplitude of the signals is recovered. In this paper, we demonstrate that based on the acquired signals parameters, a better signal normalization may be provided in order to improve the TOF resolution. The procedure was tested using large sample of data registered by a dedicated detection setup enabling sampling of signals with 50-ps intervals. Experimental setup provided irradiation of a chosen position in the plastic scintillator strip with annihilation gamma quanta.

Opis:
The article presents an overview of methods for the production of bioethanol and the possibility of its use to power internal combustion engines. The effects of supplying spark-ignition engine with bioethanol having various degrees of hydration were examined experimentally on the engine dynamometer. The measurement results were referred to the anhydrous bioethanol, which is used widely as petrol biocomponent and compared in terms of the course of the pressure in the combustion chamber of the engine as well as engine performance parameters – torque and power. It was found that with the decrease in alcohol concentration, the performance of the spark ignition engine deteriorated. The reduction of in-cylinder pressure was proportional to the increase in the water content in the fuel. No significant changes in the general shape of in-cylinder pressure curves were observed. Engine torque and power decreased with an increase in the water content in the fuel, especially at high engine speed. It has been stated that supplying the engine with bioethanol containing up to 6% (v/v) of water does not result in significant losses in engine performance.

DMACC:Cu$\text{}^{2+}$ was studied in the temperature range (6÷293) K. We did not observe any anomalies of spin-Hamiltonian parameters of Cu$\text{}^{2+}$ ion corresponding to the temperature anomalies observed in dielectric studies. The electron paramagnetic resonance anomaly recorded at about 40 K results from the subtle changes in bonds angles and Cu-Cl distances and suggests the smooth second order transition.

In this article we present a novel method of hit time and hit position reconstruction in long scintillator detectors. We take advantage of the fact that for this kind of detectors amplitude and shape of registered signals depend strongly on the position where particle hits the detector. The reconstruction is based on determination of the degree of similarity between measured and averaged signals stored in a library for a set of well-defined positions along the scintillator. Preliminary results of validation of the introduced method with experimental data obtained by means of the double strip prototype of the J-PET detector are presented.

Results of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and microscopic studies on simple microorganisms, brewing yeasts, are presented. Lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) were found to change from 2.4 to 2.9 ns (longer-lived component) for lyophilized and aqueous yeasts, respectively. Also hygroscopicity of yeasts in time was examined, allowing to check how water – the main component of the cell – affects PALS parameters, thus lifetime of o-Ps were found to change from 1.2 to 1.4 ns (shorter-lived component) for the dried yeasts. The time sufficient to hydrate the cells was found below 10 hours. In the presence of liquid water, an indication of reorganization of yeast in the molecular scale was observed. Microscopic images of the lyophilized, dried, and wet yeasts with best possible resolution were obtained using inverted microscopy (IM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) methods. As a result, visible changes to the surface of the cell me mbrane were observed in ESEM images.
