Opis:
This article presents the issue of child readership in a multicultural world. The article is based on the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project named “Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners”,2 in which a team focused its research activities on the personality traits of readers, the social context of reading and their reading preferences. The period when children first encounter a book induces and stimulates a cultural need in children. This need appears at a pre-school age and fully develops during the early schooling years of a child. The current multicultural school presents relatively new social contexts that accompany the child in the context of their reading experience and experiences. The contents, genres and forms that children currently prefer when reading change in connection with cultural and social diversity. The article presents certain findings from two phases of research in which the research team used the qualitative method of discussions with focus groups and a questionnaire to identify the typical traits of readers and non-readers, the social context of readership and their preferred content, forms and media. Several noteworthy differences were identified, which are closely related to a multicultural environment and significantly differentiate the young readers of today from readers in the past.

Opis:
The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of reading preferences of elementary school younger learners in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland. A questionnaire of own design was used, based on an initial exploration by means of focus interviews. Respondents were divided by their reading levels. The research sample consisted of 693 Slovak, 254 Czech and 248 Polish learners. Findings indicated similarities, but also considerable differences offering a possibility to draw knowledge on international research of learners’ reading preferences. The most important finding was the difference of the Polish sample correlating with the best results of Polish learners in international measurements.

The study builds on the article published by the authors in No. 3/20201.Its aim is to present further results of the international comparative analysis. The study deals with the revealed social context influencing younger pupils’ reading. Respondents’ statements were obtained through a questionnaire of own design. Items related to the social context arose from a qualitative analysis of focus interviews in the previous research phase. The research sample consisted of 693 Slovak, 254 Czech and 248 Polish pupils 9-10 years old. Findings showed differences between national groups. Pupils prefer reading with someone; mothers are the most important partners for sharing, fathers read slightly more often only to Polish pupils. Polish pupils prefer reading aloud in front of an audience the most. Teachers as partners for reading interests are the most prominent in the Polish group. The study presents findings and differences in international comparisons of the social context of younger pupils’ reading.

Opis:
In recent years, we have been able to observe a stronger trend to explore the educational reality by way of scientific research. This results from the pressure on quantitative indicators and evidence-based arguments. International surveys focus mainly on educational effects and provide more or less accurate rankings of educational systems and the degree of learners’ success, school and national rates. In addition to these trends, however, it is also necessary to focus one’s research on the real world of children and young learners in a holistic concept. Qualitative research strategies prefer more phenomenological and personalistic approaches based on exploratory and investigative scientific methods. Such approaches have been applied by the authors in previous studies: they have published several studies and two monographs dedicated to children who are about to begin their education and their understanding of the world. This research was supported by the VEGA 1/0598/15 “The Child at the Threshold of Education and its World” project. In this paper, the authors will present brief findings from these studies. The basic source was authentic children’s testimonies to the significant phenomena of their world and childhood. Building on these findings, we are currently focusing our research on the formation and development of the children’s readability (supported by the VEGA 1/0455/18 “Research and Development of Readability with Younger School-Age Learners” project1). There are convincing claims that this phenomenon is the most important determinant of success in education and the development of creativity and critical thinking.

Opis:
This study examines the correlation between 9–10-year-old learners’ reading interest and four types of socio-cultural environments that stimulate their interest (enthusiasm) in reading as a fundamental pillar of reading literacy development. The study aimed to map and analyse the socio-cultural context of four levels of intensity of reading interest of 1195 Slovak, Czech and Polish learners. A 46-item questionnaire was used to achieve the aim of the study. Statistical testing using Spearman’s coefficient was used for analysis. The significant results of the research showed that the correlation between monitored younger learners’ reading interest and family environment is very weak, and reading as a leisure activity in the virtual environment is not attractive.

The contribution presents partial results of research aimed to find out students’ evaluation opinions of their own knowledge and experience for development of children’s language and literary literacy in kindergartens and children’s school clubs and to point out differences in self-evaluation, depending on the length and the form of the study. The research sample consisted of 98% of students of the full-time and part-time study programme of Pre-School and Elementary Pedagogy, 228 in total. An 11-item questionnaire of our own design was used in the research. In the items P5 - P11, students expressed their subjective evaluation opinion of their knowledge and experience on a five-point scale. Research results showed that students’ self-evaluation of knowledge and experience in language and literary literacy depends on both the length and the form of their study1.

The study presents the results of a partial investigation of the demandness of working activities as perceived by primary education teachers. It follows up on broader research contexts and is part of the VEGA 1/0415/22 project. The study presents correlations between teachers’ working activities being perceived as the highest load and the length of their teaching experience, age, and school location. The research results show statistical significance between mental and physical loads of activities. Activities with the highest load are: dealing with problem situations and pupil conflicts and individual care of pupils with special educational needs – SEN.
