    The aim of the article is to give a brief overview of English empiricism, particularly in modern philosophy. The paper will firstly examine the pre-enlightenment thought of F. Bacon, upon which it will discuss the empiricism of J. Locke, G. Berkeley and D. Hume. The general conclusion of the paper has it that although empiricism has assumed different shades, it has always permeated English culture.

    Opis:
    In the article one adopt the assume that the communication has the social dimension and is related to human being. One can define it only after the definition of human being. The question: what communication do one need? is closely connected with the results of anthropologic- philosophical researches. The homo-theories of today are much one-sided, first of all they alien the man from his natural and social environment (for instance the symbolism). We propose the definition of man plaited in the environment and we call him homo universus. Helpful is here the romantic and neoromantic philosophy, especially its theory of language and communication.

    In his article the author discusses the philosophy of the early romanticism in Germany, conncentrating on the romantic conception of language and its reference to the universe. Two tendencies in the philosophy of that period can be distinguished: 1st Schelling's "philosophy of nature" and so called "philosophical natural science", 2nd so called "true romanticism" (Novalis, F. Schlegel and others). By the former language was considered an instrument for establishing the unity of the universe, e.g. by tracing common sources of words. The "true" romanticists disregarded the existing spoken language of men and concentrated on the language of nature. The human language was interpreted as a late stage in the evolution of the language of the universe, disadvantageous to nature itself.

    The aim of this article is to show the influence of I. Kant's methodology on the development of modern philosophy of language. The author discusses the selected standpoints inspired in this respect by the Kantian "Copernican revolution" and apriorism. The starting point of considerations are W. v. Humboldt's views for whom language is a spontaneous "emanation of spirit", the result of incessantly active internal powers of man. Humboldtism influenced a number of later conceptions. One of them is "generative grammar" of N. Chomsky's American school, although there are also present in this case influences of nativistic interpretations. In a more distinct manner the Kantian-Humboldtian apriorism has influenced the "symbolic" philosophy of E. Cassirer and the linguistic "relativism" of E. Sapir, B. L. Whorf and L. Weisgerber. Their views are presented in the next part of the work. The article ends with the discussion of H. Glinz's philosophical and linguistic views which are based in great measure also on the Kantian methodology.

    The article deals with the history of Polish philosophy. Particular attention is given to its practical, at times even pragmatic overtone. The praxis dominates in the Middle Ages, modern philosophy and also in contemporary thought. After the appearance of Kantianism, there emerges in Poland a theoretical consciousness. These practical and theoretical dimensions lead to a synthesis that is referred as “Polish humanism”.
    Praca dotyczy dziejów filozofii polskiej. Wydobywa zwłaszcza jej zabarwienie praktyczne, niekiedy nawet pragmatyczne. Praktycyzm dominuje w średniowieczu, w filozofii nowożytnej, ale także w myśli współczesnej. Po zaistnieniu  Kantyzmu pojawia się w Polsce od XIX. wieku świadomość teoretyczna. Wątek praktyczny i teoretyczny prowadzi do syntezy w „humanizmie polskim”.
