There is no doubt that a well-considered and consistent conceptual apparatus is a very useful tool for performing certain cataloguing and scientific activities. Furthermore, it becomes practically essential in the case of automatic information processing. As a result, the scope of the modern scientific activity involves analyzing concepts, transforming them into terms and – through analyzing their designata and usus – classifying them. Over the last years the problem of creating and using controlled vocabulary in IT tools used by human sciences, including in electronic documentation of museum objects, has been widely debated in Poland. These discussions were repeatedly diverted to the following issues: the urgent need of creating dictionaries that could be used in the ongoing cataloguing process of collections and the equal need of providing at least bilingual dictionaries that would allow for sharing these data internationally. This article aims to analyze the possibilities of using the available foreign language thesauruses (English, French, German) for cataloguing activities in Poland. This analysis has been conducted from the point of view of both the cataloguing person and information recipient, including a foreign-language recipient. The existing discrepancies in conceptualization of historical and cultural phenomena in particular languages appear to exclude the possibility of mutual exchange of hierarchical structures of concepts in the case of cataloguing of national heritage. However, this should not prevent from using the experiences gained by other nations in the process of creating Polish dictionaries and assigning the Polish terms the equivalents in other languages.
Przemyślany i konsekwentny aparat pojęciowy bez wątpienia stanowi cenną pomoc w wielu przedsięwzięciach dokumentacyjnych i naukowych, a w sytuacji automatycznego przetwarzania informacji – staje się on wręcz niezbędny. W konsekwencji badanie pojęć, przekształcanie ich w terminy i – w drodze analizy istoty ich desygnatów oraz uzusu językowego – klasyfikowanie, jest jednym z zadań współczesnej nauki. W ostatnich latach w Polsce coraz szerzej dyskutowany jest problem tworzenia i zastosowania słownictwa kontrolowanego w narzędziach informatycznych, z których korzystają nauki humanistyczne, w tym – w elektronicznej dokumentacji muzealiów. W dyskusji tej zbiegają się dwa problemy: pilna potrzeba powstania słowników, które mogłyby być wykorzystywane w bieżącej inwentaryzacji zbiorów oraz – równie pilna – potrzeba zapewnienia funkcjonowania przynajmniej dwujęzycznych struktur słownikowych, które umożliwiłyby udostępnianie tych informacji w kontekście międzynarodowym. Celem artykułu jest analiza możliwości wykorzystania istniejących tezaurusów obcojęzycznych (angielskich, francuskich, niemieckich) w polskiej praktyce inwentaryzacyjnej. Jest ona podejmowana zarówno z punktu widzenia dokumentalisty, jak i odbiorcy informacji, w tym odbiorcy obcojęzycznego. Obserwowana rozbieżność konceptualizacji zjawisk w dziedzinie historii i kultury w poszczególnych językach wydaje się wykluczać wzajemne przejmowanie przez nie struktur hierarchicznych pojęć w inwentaryzacji narodowego dziedzictwa, co nie neguje jednak zasadności korzystania z doświadczeń innych narodów w procesie budowania słowników polskojęzycznych oraz podejmowania działań na rzecz uzgadniania terminologii polskiej z uznaną terminologia obcą.

On 24-26 September 2009 at the seat of the Institute of Art History at the University of Wrocław a conference entitled ‘Image as a reasearch topic and study method’ – the third meeting in the cycle ‘Digital encounters with art’ – took place. Dealing with complex and specialised problems related to the situation of a picture in contemporary research in art, and especially the use of digital reproduction and computer visualisation methods, becoming more and more popular, were possible thanks to the co-operation of the institutions representing the technical sciences – the Research and Academic Computer Network and the Wrocław University of Technology – Wrocław Centre for Technology Transfer – and also of the Foundation of Palaces and Gardens’ Valley (Fundacja Doliny Pałaców i Ogrodów Kotliny Jeleniogórskiej) connected with the protection of historic landscape. The conference programme covered various issues including: the techniques and technologies which may be used in monument documentation with special attention paid to photogrammetry, and 2D and 3D scaning and printing; the question of usage of digital tools in analysing – both realistic and illusory – architecture and landscape; and questions about the role of a digital picture in documentation and conservatory activities. The conference ended with the section entitled ‘In search of an addressee’ devoted to availability of the results of researching the cultural heritage to various groups of recipients.

In the mid-17th century on the outskirts of the capitals of the hereditary Duchies of Silesia – Glogow, Jawor and Świdnica – Lutheran churches were erected known as the Churches of Peace, now considered the largest Baroque timber-framed ecclesiastical buildings in Europe. Their advent was the result of a particular political and religious situation which existed in Silesia during the early modern era, since it was absorbed into the Habsburg monarchy in 1526. This period of time was also the beginning of the Protestant Reformation which found many supporters among the Silesians. Lutheranism soon became the dominant religion in Silesia. Religious differences between the sovereign and the subjects led to constant tensions that worsened during the Thirty Years’ War. According to the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (hence the name of the churches), Evangelists could worship in only three new churches in the Duchies, which were to be raised at their own expenses from clay and wood. All the other places of worship were taken away from them. The authorities intended the Churches of Peace to reflect the position of Protestant communities within the existing political realities – simple utilitarian buildings not solid or durable, which in ideological terms should not compete with the monumental Catholic architecture in the towns near which they were erected. These limitations can be seen as the reason the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica have an interesting décor. The present paper discusses the church in Świdnica, and the historic transformation of its décor and furnishings from the mid-17th to the mid-18th century. The church’s interior included wall and ceiling paintings, woodcarvings of the window sills in the matronea and the loges, liturgical furnishings such as the late Baroque altar (1752–1753), the organ front (1776–1784), the confessional (18th centu- ry), the Baroque pulpit (1729), and the Mannerist baptismal font (1661). Furthermore, some epitaphs, heraldic shields, guild emblems, paintings, liturgical utensils, money boxes and other smaller objects associated with the Protestant worship also survived the ravages of time. Numerous seats have also been preserved such as benches, loges and stools. The iconographic programme of the church interior initiated at the end of the 17th century by the ceiling decorations refers to the name of the church, but also evokes the associations with the Temple of Solomon and the dwelling of God among his people. The church’s original architecture which was largely based on practical considerations served as a framework over which with time new “semantic layers” were applied. These were formulated not only in terms of fine arts but also music, including church songs, thanks to the two organ fronts and the word of God preached. They all refer to the same imagery as paintings and sculptures and are deeply embedded in the so-called Baroque Protestant symbolism. What is striking, alongside the unity of its content, is the adhesion to the forms of expression combining text and image in the emblematic tradition. All this makes us see the Church of Peace in Świdnica as a “Gesamtkunstwerk”, although in the past the unity of time in creation was usually observed. In Świdnica the situation is different. As a result of almost three generations of artistic undertakings, the interior has a unique, consistent, and coherently formulated ideological programme, erudi te, even if largely devoid of high artistic quality.

Today’s internationalisation of scholarship necessitates its publication in English. This ever-more frequent requirement poses a particular challenge for many non-English art historians. The study of works of art typically starts with the description of the object under investigation. For a description to be accurate, a precise terminology is essential. Specialist terminology is normally created by the makers of particular types of objects, as well as international scholars conceptualising artistic phenomena, they do it in their working, usually native, languages. Multilingualism brings about particular conceptual challenges when developing domain-specific terminology and its translations into other languages. Additional challenges come forth when information is to be processed automatically. The complex relationship between particular material cultural heritage and its multilingual descriptions is discussed here, based on the terminology concerning the early modern Protestant church building as an expression of particular liturgical needs. Owing to the autonomy of national Protestant Churches, new arrangements of the church interior – in terms of its structure, fixtures and specific functions – were favoured, which the relevant naming and conceptualisation should reflect. The author focuses on some of the problems that arise when research findings are to be presented in a language other than the language(s) in which research was conducted.

On 19–20 XI 2012 took place the fifth international conference from the cycle “Digital Meetings with Monuments” entitled “Digital reproduction of monuments – methods, reliabilty, permanence” held by the Institute of Art History and the Institute of History at the University of Wrocław, the Institute of Computer Science at the Technical University of Łódź together with the Wrocław Centre of Technology Transfer at the Technical University of Wrocław the latter which was the host of this year edition of the conference. Deciding the subjects of the conference, the organisers mostly wanted to refer to the current practice of documentation and research in the area of cultural heritage. The starting point for the proceedings were issues connected with terminology referring to different kinds of art works mapping, questions of traditional methods of their reproduction and a question about identification of analysis subjects in case of photographic copying. The two last papers created a valuable context for further considerations dedicated to digital technologies, on the one hand the oldest traditions of art works reproduction were introduced, and on the other hand the complexity of current issues concerning the matter was presented. The following papers were divided into five topic blocks entitled “Visualisation as a carrier of information”, “Computer-based visualisation in archaeology and conservation”, “Computer-based visualisation in museums and libraries”, “Technologies” and “Around The London Charter”. The promotion of The London Charter was also one of the main goals of the conference. The Charter conceived in 2009 is an attempt to formulate regulations “which will serve – both in intellectual and technical aspects, rising the scientific rank of computer-based visualisation of monuments, and allow treating them equally as traditional research methods and forms of presentation research results”. The Charter was translated into Polish in 2010 and may be found at the project homepage as well as at the Institute of Art History (the University of Wrocław) homepage.
