    Opis:
    The subject-matter of the report is the European Award for the Conservation of Monuments, the Gold Medal of which was granted on October 30, 1981 to the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The aim of the Award, established in 1973 by the Hamburg F.V.S. Foundation and J. W. Goethe Foundation, is to commemorate unusual actions of individuals or social organizations that preserve Europe’s architectural heritage. The Conferment Certificate says, i.a., that it is granted in the recognition of outstanding achievements in the reconstruction of this symbol of the Polish nation which, damaged during war operations, was recreated in 1971—1981 thanks to voluntary contributions. It was also thanks to these efforts that the historic centre of Warsaw, the town so heavily experienced, stayed in its old place with its original walls preserved, the last and most important feature that was missing in the town complex. When evaluating these attainments one should point out full contribution of historians, archaeologists and architects who created foundations of rebuilding as well as fine work of all craftsmen. Thanks to their skill it was possible to reuse numerous elements of old stonework, details of architectural decor of the interiors and part of highly valuable amenities. If that reconstruction has got a unanimously high opinion this was the result of the fact that we have to do here not wih a perfect adaptation of methods and attitudes unapplied anywhere else but with the execution of original Polish conservation concept, i.e. reconstruction of the original spatial relation between preserved original relics.

    The recent preservation treatment of the Romanesque doorway of St. Magdalene at Wrocław seeming to represent an entirely new stage within the series of works aimed at fixating of stone sculptures endangered with disintegration has been preceded by preservation operations in centuries that passed, the most important among them being those undertaken in the 16-th and the 19-th centuries. The works carried out in the period of' Renaissance were remarkable by their quite unusual character, for in 1529 the Abbey Church at Ołbin, then sited w ithin the „extra muros” area of the Wrocław fortificational system, has been totally demolished to prevent hostile forces from making use of it for their protection. In those days one of the church’s magnificent doorways was dismantled in the most careful manner and then mounted again at the south wall of the St. Magdalene parish church, located on the actual* town area, The date of that operation, quite extraordinary in its epoch, namely 1546, was evidenced in the records of the time and also in form of an inscription that could be read on the extrados of the doorway archivolt up to the third quarter of the 19-th century. Both the preservation and removal arose from the unquestionably positive appraisal of sculptural and ornamental values present in the doorway’s arrangement. This, though a rare but not sole viewpoint has led to the appearance of a peculiar phenomenon of revival of the Romanesque forms in architecture and plastic arts in the sixteenth-century Wroclaw. The soil for this phenomenon was prepared by the deep interest shown by the local historiographical circles for the twelfth-century monuments closely related to the early stages of the town’s history. The restoration carried out in 1888 appears to be extremely awkward one as compared with that careful behaviour of the sixteenth-century „conservators”. Due to puristic assumptions adopted in the course of restoration were removed all the Renaissance supplementations and additions resulting from altered functions of the doorway. They have been replaced by the nineteenth-century architect with odd details of the neoromanesque ornamentation. As result of an arbitrary approach to motives not complying with his own fairly inadequate knowledge of the Romanesque sculpture, he removed the lions united with bases of the outer flanking columns. It was exactly then that the inscriptions disappeared from the doorway, both the original Romanesque ones and that dating from the Renaissance period, incised to commemorate the removal operation. Actual works on the Wrocław doorway represent only the first from the planned stages within a complete range of works to be undertaken, As one of the next operations it is expected to obtain the castings that could become an excellent way to reintegrate the components of this remarkable masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture which at present are divided between the St. Magdalene church and the two Wrocław museums.

    L ’au teu r donne un aperçu de l’évolution des opinions sur les monuments d ’architecture romane en Pologne et sur les méthodes de leur conservation. Déjà les historiographes du XVe (J. Długosz) et du XVIe siècles (les chroniquers de Wrocław) ont attaché à des romans édifices polonais de l’importance p a rticulière. Cette évaluation avantageuse menait entre autres dans des cas sporadiques à leur protection, dont le portail de l’abbaye St.-Vincent à Ołbin, tra n s féré à l’église Ste.-Marie-Maldelaine de Wrocław peut fournir un exemple. Les trav au x de conservation, proprement dit, se rap p o rtan t aux monuments d ’a r chitecture romane ne datent p o urtant que de la moitié du XIXe siècle. Ces trav au x restent — de même q u ’aux autres pays de l’Europe — sous le signe du purisme dans l ’enlèvement 'des remaniements postérieurs, idépendamment de le u r valeur, et p o rten t l ’empreinte de l’impassibilité à l’égard de l’au th en tique (église collégiale à Kruszwica). Comme caractéristiques pour la fin du XIXe siècle, l’au teu r cite d ’intéressants exemples de la reconstruction des éléments d ’édifices romans, connus seulement par les restes des fondations découverts p ar les fouilles, comme dans le cas des absides nord de l’église St.-Procope à Strzelno eit d ’abside du choeur de l’église de la Vierge à Inowrocław. Ce courant de reconstruction des fragments d ’édifices, n ’existant depuis longtemps, se manifestait jusqu’aux temps les plus récents dans les trav a u x auprès les monuments d’architecture ro mane. Le reconstruction de l’église collégiale à Turn près de Łęczyca après la destruction causée p a r la seconde guerre mondiale en est un exemple. Mais un domaine de la conservation des monuments d ’a r chitecture romane en Pologne, particulièrement vif et plein d ’actualité, est celui de la préservation des restes authentiques „in s itu ” et de les rendre accessibles comme une exposition durable sous la forme de musée archéologique. Ce phénomène a isa justification dans le fait de la destruction des plus importants édifices romans et dans un grand développement d ’archéologie, consacrée à l’étude d ’arch ite c tu re médiévale en Pologne. Les expositions permanentes des découverts vestiges d ’architecture la plus ancienne se tro u v en t dans la cathédrale de Poznań e t dans l’église conventuelle à Trzemeszno. Leur nombre augmentera prochainement grâce aux aménagements souterrains en couns de construction dans la cathédrale de Gniezno et dans l’église collégiale à Wiślica. L ’au teu r signale un danger tou|jouns menaçant encore d e la perte de l’authentique par un trop prompt échange des éléments du revêtement en pie rre de taille, comme ceci avait lieu à l ’église collégiale d ’Opatôw. En même temps l’auteur fait rema rque r les possibilités potentielles de la restitution des valeurs, en ap p a re n ce irréparablement perdues, par l’enlèvement des remaniements résultants des restaurations du XIXe siècle. Les effets excellents de la conservation actuelle — proche d ’achèvement — de l’église collégiale à Kruszwica en sont la preuve.
