    The article discusses the references to Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe present in the works of Czesław Miłosz. They appear in his poems, as well as in essays and non-literary texts, e.g. interviews. The references to Goethe in Miłosz’s work are also of interest, especially included in autobiographical statements. The article attempts to indicate certain regularities concerning the occurrence of intertextual references to Goethe’s tragedy, related to the poet’s worldview, his aesthetic choices and biographical context. The considerations included in the article lead to the conclusion that the hero of the tragedy symbolises the content which, after World War II, made it possible to name and understand the processes that led to the catastrophe of war and the rejection of humanity. Faust can be a tool for self-characterisation or an accusation against German culture and the cult of science and progress, leading to the alienation of the individual.

    Czy podrzędny potrafi mówić? – pytała Gayatri Spivak. Kto zezwala mówić? Kto – i czy w ogóle – słucha? Badaczka wprowadza kategorie mówienia i słuchania, niezwykle przydatne do badania literatury. W artykule przeanalizowano pod tym kątem książki należące do niemieckiej literatury najnowszej, będące relacjami z podróży do Polski. Istotny jest tu problem braku znajomości języka polskiego wśród podróżujących i jego wpływu na charakter, zawartość oraz wiarogodność relacji. Obfitego materiału do badań na ten temat dostarczają najnowsze niemieckie podróże literackie, niewyeksplorowane badawczo: Petra Reski, Ein Land so weit, 2000; Tina Stroheker, Polnisches Journal.     Can the subaltern speak? – asked Gayatri Spivak. Who gives permission to speak? Who, and if at all, listens? The researcher introduces categories of speaking and listening, supremely useful forresearching literature. This article analyses, in this regard, the books of contemporary Germanliterature which are accounts of journeys to Poland. Of importance here is the lack of knowledgeof the Polish language among the travellers and its impact on the character, contents and credibility of the coverage. Prolific relevant material for research is provided by the most contemporary German literary traveller who has not been scientifically explored: Petra Reski, Ein Land soweit, 2000; Tina Stroheker, Polnisches Journal.     Niniejszy tekst poświęcony został twórczości literackiej Henryka Wańka, artysty o niezwykle bogatym i spójnym dorobku literackim i malarskim, który scala idea odkrywania duchowego podłoża rzeczywistości. Dla właściwego zrozumienia jego sztuki ukazano ją w kontekście śląskiego undergroundu artystycznego lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych. Stawiam tezę, że Waniek łączy w swej twórczości (pozornie) przeciwstawne modele: outsiderski i powinnościowy, przy czym kierunek i zakres tego drugiego jest skutkiem autonomicznych decyzji twórczych. Pisarz z czasem coraz mocniej opowiada się po stronie modelu artysty będącego strażnikiem pamięci. Jednak istotne pozostaje nadal traktowanie sztuki jako drogi wtajemniczenia. Obydwie antagonistyczne postawy spotykają się w figurze outsidera, podążającego własną drogą przez Śląsk, który artysta uznał za centralne miejsce swojej twórczości.
    This text is devoted to the works of Henryk Waniek, an artist of a remarkably rich and coherent literary and painting output merged by the idea of discovering the spiritual basis of our reality. The first part of this article discusses his activity as co-founder of the Oneiron Circle belonging to the Silesian artistic underground of the 1960s and 1970s, here related to as an essential context and prediction of his coming work. The second part analyses Waniek’s prose, especially the categories of artistic memory, nature and consciousness. I propose the thesis that Waniek in his work brings together (seemingly) opposing models: an outsider model and an obligatory model. With time, the author takes the side of an artist as a memory guard more and more. However, it is crucial to treat art as initiation. Both attitudes are united in the figure of the outsider following his own path through Silesia which the artist considered to be the central point of his work.

    In this article, the author discusses and reviews the first Polish critical edition of Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily (2015). The literary text was preceded by two elaborate scientific descriptions which the author of this article refers to. The primary focus is on the extensive German tradition of interpreting The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily (Das Märchen, 1795), because the main spur of its development is the difficulty or inability to obtain its unambiguous interpretation due to the high degree of symbolism and the esotericism of this literary work. Both critical texts feature the following interpretation grounds: historic-literary – emphasizing the role of the literary circle of the Weimar Goethe and Schiller; historical – stressing the importance of the events associated with the French Revolution and its impact on the situation in Germany; philosophical – represented by Rudolf Steiner and his anthroposophic reading of this work; and poetological – focusing on the properties and functions of its poetics. Among the existing explication there is a lack of genology of the fairy tales and a lack of the placing the work in a broader context of ideas and works of Goethe, which, if taken into account could help to clarify its meanings.
