Soil-steel structures have been part of Canadian design codes since the 1970s. The inclusion in the Ontario design codes was necessary due to a growing use of flexible buried structures in practice. Since those early developments, the subsequent code committees have always strived to find the appropriate balance between the primary objective of providing design criteria that reflect the safety and serviceability requirements of the code and incorporating the significant practical experience of owners, engineers and industry. Each decade has seen innovations in products and applications as well as advances in research and numerical modelling. Editions of the code have acknowledged these changes, often in the non-mandatory sections, but have sometimes struggled to provide specific criteria. Instead it has provided general guidance or framework for design. Currently, many of the existing design clauses do not directly cover the applications of both flexible and rigid buried structures in regular use today. This paper describes the key updates being proposed for the Buried Structures section of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. These changes are based on input from owners, engineers and industry describing the needs for current design and practice as well as a modem framework for permitting innovation. The major changes include areas such of finite element analysis, foundation design, conduit wall buckling and the use of flexible structures in cold regions susceptible to permafrost. These major changes will be discussed conceptually as final approval is still pending before inclusion in the 2019 version. The paper will describe some of the background and rationale for the proposals. Finally, the paper will discuss the challenges faced by the sub-committee in determining what should be included in the mandatory sections of the code or in commentary.

Explosives with improved high temperature properties are usually referred to as 'thermally stable explosives' or heat-resistant explosives. They are safer, more reliable and more stable at elevated temperatures and find applications in modern Ordnance, Space and Nuclear applications. This paper discusses general approaches for the synthesis of thermally stable explosives, their properties and specific applications. This paper also gives a comparative account of the properties of some of the most thermally stable explosives reported so far. Based on their ease of synthesis, properties (mainly stability at elevated temperatures and insensitivity to impact, friction and percussion) and cost, TATB is considered as a benchmark, thermally stable explosive which is discussed in detail. Furthermore, this review also describes the synthesis and properties of BTDAONAB which does not melt below 550 °C and is considered a better thermally stable explosive than TATB. Finally, a new line of research in this field in the years to come is also highlighted.

The paper presents a method of evaluating the optimal value of the cargo ships deadweight and the coupled optimal value of cargo handling capacity. The method may be useful at the stage of establishing the main owners requirements concerning the ship design parameters as well as for choosing a proper second hand ship for a given transportation task. The deadweight and the capacity are determined on the basis of a selected economic measure of the transport effectiveness of ship – the Required Freight Rate. The mathematical model of the problem is of a deterministic character and the simplifying assumptions are justified for ships operating in the liner trade. The assumptions are so selected that solution of the problem is obtained in analytical closed form. The presented method can be useful for application in the preliminary ship design or in the simulation of pre-investment transportation task studies.

The paper presents an algorithm for preliminary calculation of mass and mass centre height of hull structure of inland navigation ships. It was elaborated basing on requirements of the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Inland Navigation Ships of Polish Register of Shipping, with application of a simplified method of estimating mass of hull plating stiffeners. The algorithm deals with the dimensioning of scantlings of structural members of classical ships intended for shipping dry cargo, and dry and liquid bulk cargoes; however it does not cover ships of entirely different structural arrangement such as roll-on-roll-offships fitted with heavy decks, as the dimensioning of their scantlings is based on different models.

This paper presents a method of predicting effective power demand (brake horse power – B.H.P.) for propulsion of inland waterways push train, useful in the preliminary design stages. By using it, on the basis of known main particulars of a given push train, i.e. its length, breadth, draught and speed, a generalized Admiralty formula can be determined and then the pusher propulsion power can be preliminarily predicted by making use of the elaborated structure of the formula. Application of the method is illustrated on the example of a two-segment push train of inland waterways passenger ship designed in the frame of the Eureka INCOWATRANS E!3065 project.

Paper presents results of studies on a parametric method of predicting ship operating costs - useful in the preliminary ship design. Conception and theoretical basis of the method are presented, identified are also factors of significant importance for the ship operating costs, taking into account changes in the value of money. Approximation formulae for estimating the operating cost components have been developed as well as a computational algorithm based on a minimum Required Freight Rate (RFR). The useful character of the method is illustrated by examples of operating cost predictions for four different ship types designed in the Eureka project E!2772, i.e.: SINE 202 universal container carrier, SINE 203 oil product tanker, SINE 204 ro-ro ship and SINE 205 river-sea ship.

This last decade silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOS-FET technology has demonstrated its potentialities for high frequency (reaching cutoff frequencies close to 500 GHz for n-MOSFETs) and for harsh environments (high temperature, radiation) commercial applications. For RF and system-onchip applications, SOI also presents the major advantage of providing high resistivity substrate capabilities, leading to substantially reduced substrate losses. Substrate resistivity values higher than 1 k? cm can easily be achieved and high resistivity silicon (HRS) is commonly foreseen as a promising substrate for radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) and mixed signal applications. In this paper, based on several experimental and simulation results the interest, limitations but also possible future improvements of the SOI MOS technology are presented.

Low-frequency sound radiation from vibrating plates is a practical problem often found in engineering applications. In this article, the sound radiation from a circular hatchway is examined using a discrete approach based in the acoustic resistance matrix. Since this matrix can be combined with the volume velocity vector on the discretized vibrating circular surface, the sound radiation efficiency can be estimated through matrix approaches. The limitation of the approach is discussed by using benchmark results presented in previous works. The method produces acceptable results in low frequencies when the response of the plate is dominated by one low structural mode. When the response of more than one mode is significant, the method gives good estimation of the total sound power just for frequencies up to the first resonance. However, the method can be applied to complex and irregular vibrating plane surfaces.

Wykonano cykl badań dobowych określających dobową dynamikę stężenia wybranych rozpuszczalnych związków biogennych, takich jak: fosfor fosforanowy, azot amonowy i azot azotanowy oraz ilości chlorofilu a. Próbki wody pozyskano z ekotonu mikrowarstwy powierzchniowej oraz z warstwy wody podpowierzchniowej z jeziora lobeliowego. Próbki pobierano w cyklu czterogodzinnym przez okres trzech dni. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników stwierdzono, że badane parametry zmieniają swoje stężenie w sposób cykliczny. Dynamika stężenia chlorofilu a wskazuje na transport fitoneustonu między mikrowarstwą powierzchniową i niżej położonymi warstwami wody.
A series of studies concerning daily fluctuation cycles of selected soluble nutrients compounds like phosphorus, nitrates and phytoneuston occurrence was performed. The samples were gained from the ecotone surface microlayer and the water depths of a lobelia lake. Water samples were sampled in a four hour cycle for three days. On the basis of the gained data it was stated that the studied parameters changed periodically. The dynamics of amount of chlorophyll a indicate movement of phytoneuston between surface microlayer and the water depths.

The article aims at verification of the following thesis: the Internet as a platform of new interpersonal relationships promotes pro-social attitudes. They find their expression in various initiatives undertaken selflessly by individuals in order to actualise the common good (e.g. Linux, Wikipedia, support groups, knowledge-exchange portals, etc). Authoress' own research has been used for exemplification purposes. It has been assumed that human inclination to reciprocity constitutes, among others, a source of pro-social attitudes. This inclination can be more or less efficiently actualized, depending on the structure of human relations. The significance of reciprocity increases when the role of institutionalism, formalism and centralisation decreases. Nowadays, the patterns of social relations are subject to profound transformations primarily as a result of the development of the Internet. New social relations are more reciprocal in character. The Internet creates new communication space in which social or even pro-social nature of people can be fruitfully actualised.
W artykule podjęto próbę weryfikacji następującej hipotezy: Internet, stając się platformą nowych struktur relacji międzyludzkich, przyczynia się do rozpowszechniania postaw prospołecznych. Ich wyrazem są różnego rodzaju inicjatywy podejmowane bezinteresownie przez jednostki w celu realizowania dobra wspólnego (np. Linux, Wikipedia, grupy samopomocowe, portale wymiany wiedzy itp.). Odniesiono się tu głównie do źródeł zastanych, natomiast w celach egzemplifikacyjnych wykorzystane zostały badania własne. Weryfikując hipotezę – odwołując się do klasycznych i współczesnych teorii socjologicznych – przyjęto, że źródłem postaw prospołecznych człowieka jest między innymi jego skłonność do wzajemności. Cecha ta może być bardziej lub mniej skutecznie realizowana, w zależności od charakteru struktury międzyludzkich relacji. Znaczenie wzajemności wzrasta, gdy maleje w nich rola instytucjonalizacji, formalizacji i centralizacji. Wzory relacji społecznych ulegają obecnie gruntownym przemianom, przede wszystkim pod wpływem rozwoju Internetu. W nowej formie nie tylko sprzyjają one, ale nawet wymuszają zwrotny charakter relacji. Internet tworzy więc nową przestrzeń komunikacyjną, w której owocnie może realizować się społeczna czy wręcz prospołeczna natura człowieka.

To determine the effect of occupational stress on low-back pain (LBP), a cross-sectional study has been carried out, by interviews, on workers exposed to 3 stresses: manual handling (MH, 82 women and 264 men), whole body vibrations (WBV, 274 men), and static postures (278 women). Anthropometric data, occupational stress, LBP severity and frequency, and a psychological evaluation of these groups were compared to those of a control population of 208 workers (104 men and 104 women). The results show that 30% of the population had never suffered from LBP. Age and the body mass index of the workers were the parameters most closely associated with LBP. Women involved in MH had higher frequency and severity of LBP than their reference population. Men involved in MH or exposed to WBV had higher frequency of painful episodes than their reference population. Workers exposed to one of the stresses were on sick leave for LBP more often, and for longer periods, than workers in the reference group. The results show that individual factors are often decisive in the onset of LBP. Nevertheless, in the more serious LBP cases, occupational stress is an aggravating factor for LBP and its consequences.

Studies were conducted to determine the capacity to accumulate four metals – barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium in a coastal lake, Dołgie Wielkie. The lake is situated in World Biosphere Reserve – the Slovinski National Park. Water samples were collected from the surface microlayer (SML) using the Garrett mesh screen and at the same time samples were also collected from the subsurface water layer. Metal concentrations were analysed using a mass spectrometer. The enrichment factors were determined for metals in the surface microlayer. The greatest accumulation capacity was observed for barium. A lesser accumulation capacity was found for magnesium. Concentrations of calcium and strontium were comparable in both investigated layers. Seasonal variation was observed for all analyzed metals.
Przeprowadzono badania zdolności do akumulacji czterech metali – strontu, baru, wapnia i magnezu w przymorskim jeziorze Dołgie Wielkie. Jezioro usytuowane jest na terenie Słowińskiego Parku Narodowego. Próbki wody pobierano z mikrowarstwy powierzchniowej za pomocą siatki Garretta oraz równolegle z warstwy wody podpowierzchniowej. Analizy stężenia metali wykonano z użyciem spektrometru masowego. Badano zdolność do wzbogacania metali w mikrowarstwie powierzchniowej. Najwyższą zdolność do akumulacji wykazywał bar. W mniejszym stopniu akumulował się magnez. Stężenie wapnia i strontu było porównywalne w obu badanych warstwach. Stwierdzono sezonową zmienność wszystkich badanych metali.

The use of linearly or circularly polarized light in the absorption or excitation beam in spectroscopic studies involving lanthanide ions, and the analysis of emitted light polarization has provided useful information concerning molecular structure, and excited state dynamics and energetics. Linear polarization studies may be used to aid in the assignment of crystal field components of electronic transitions, and circular polarization may be employed as a probe of chiral structure and structural changes. Examples of several of the different experimental techniques are presented and discussed.

Shape variational formulation for Euler flow has already been considered by the author in (1999a, 2007c). We develop here the control approach considering the convection (or mass transport) as the "state equation" while the speed vector field is the control and we introduce the h-Sobolev curvature which turns to be shape differentiable. The value function defines a new shape metric; we derive existence of geodesic for a p-pseudo metric, verifying the triangle property with a factor 2p-1, for any p > 1. Any geodesic solves the Euler equation for incompressible fluids and, in dimension 3, is not curl free. The classical Euler equation for incompressible fluid (3), coupled with the convection (1) turns to have variational solutions when conditions are imposed on the convected tube ζ while no initial condition has to be imposed on the fluid speed V itself.

Paper presents results of studies on a parametric method of predicting ship building costs - useful in the preliminaly design. Conception and theoretical basis of the method are presented, devised are also approximation formulae for estimating the building costs of the ship hull, ship equipment and the power plant with propulsion system. Factors of importance for the ship building costs are identified and a computational algorithm formulated. The useful character of the method is illustrated by examples of building cost predictions for four different ship types designed in the Eureka project E!2772, i.e.: SINE 202 universal container carrier, SINE 203 oil product tanker, SINE 204 ro-ro ship and SINE 205 river-sea ship.

Thermoelectric materials are used as solid-state heat pumps and as power generators. The low efficiency of devices based on conventional bulk thermoelectric materials confines their applications to niches in which their advantages in compactness and controllability outweigh that drawback. Recent developments in nanotechnologies have led to the development of thermoelectric nano-materials with double the efficiency of the best bulk materials, opening several new classes of applications for thermoelectric energy conversion technology. We review here first the physical mechanisms that result in the superior thermoelectric performance of low-dimensional solids, compared to bulk thermoelectric materials: they are a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity, and an increase in the Seebeck coefficient S for a given carrier density. The second part of this review summarizes experimental results obtained on macroscopic arrays of bismuth, antimony, and zinc nanowires with diameters ranging from 200 to 7 nm. We show how size-quantization effects greatly increase S for a given carrier concentration, as long as the diameter of the nanowires remains above 9 nm, below which localization effects start dominating. In a third part, we give data on PbTe nanocomposites, particularly bulk samples containing 30~nm diameter Pb inclusions. These inclusions affect the electron scattering in such a way as to again increase the Seebeck coefficient.

Hydrochemical indicators are widely used for assessment of groundwater chemistry. They were established mainly for mineral water in order to understand their origin and chemical classification. In the case of fresh water, they are used occasionally because quality classifications are based on concentrations of individual components and physical properties in relation to the permissible standards established for water intended for human consumption. Natural in Polish climate, bicarbonate-calcium and bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium waters are commonly used for drinking. In many places, ions emitted from pollution outbreaks have already caused chemical changes of water and it is often the first symptom of their contamination. The author has evaluated the scope and trends of these changes in the groundwater of the Holy Cross region in Poland using the bicarbonate and calcium-magnesium indicators.

This paper contains formulation of a parametric method for evaluation of SWATH ship’s hull resistance. The method was elaborated on the basis of numerical calculation results obtained by using structural methods based on ship hydrodynamic theory and performed for sufficiently large series of body forms with systematically changing ship form parameters. Also, results of verifying investigations dealing with features of the method in question are presented by comparing the obtained resistance characteristics with those achieved by other authors as well as with ship model experimental test results. The obtained results of the verification indicate that the elaborated method can be useful in preliminary designing the SWATH ships.

This paper describes a method for preliminary designing the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), especially useful in the case when requirements concerning kinematic and dynamic parameters of vehicle motion are given in design assumptions. Concept of the method is based on dynamic equations which describe vehicle planar motion in vertical and horizontal directions, resulting from action of screw propellers or water ballast, respectively. The motion equations were determined by applying simplifications concerning both geometrical description of vehicle’s form and flow phenomena. Their solutions were obtained in the form of closed analytical expressions which are both of cognitive and practical merits as they can serve to assess influence of vehicle’s design parameters on its motion characteristics and simultaneously are convenient to formulate design optimization problems. Application of the method was illustrated by the attached examples dealing with determination of kinematic and dynamic characteristics of motion of the vehicle „Scylla” of set geometrical configuration and propulsion parameters.

This paper describes a method useful for determination of load carrying capacity of underwater vehicle, elaborated on the basis of investigations of series of vehicles of systematically changed geometrical dimensions. By using the set of the series of vehicles their structural mass and displacement – at a given structural material and assumed maximum permissible submersion depth – were determined, and next – approximation formulae for deadweight of vehicles were obtained. Vehicle’s form may be consisted of one or a few cylindrical floats of circular cross-section, ended with caps. The floats are joined together with a space pipe frame. Acceptability of design solutions results from comparison of working stress values in float’s shell plating with permissible stresses as well as critical stresses. The presented method may be useful in the preliminary stage of designing the underwater vehicles - i.e. may serve for preliminary determination of a vehicle deadweight – at its given, or determined, geometrical dimensions, maximum permissible submersion depth, as well as a selected structural material.

This paper describes a unique engineering method intended for the preliminary designing of marine echo-location systems. The solved designing problem consists in determining geometrical parameters and selecting structural materials for a vessel of a buoyancy necessary to contain measuring instruments of a given mass, as well as its maximum gabarites and operational submersion depth. The assumed variability range of the system’s parameters determines a space of permissible applicability parameters of the method. Stress level related to permissible and critical stresses was assumed to be safety criterion for the vessel. The method may be applied also to solving converse problems consisting in determining maximum permissible submersion depth for a vessel made of assumed structural materials and having given geometrical parameters. The presented description of the method is illustrated by an example of its application.
