It compares and contrasts the association between World Literature and Comparative Literature to that between International American Studies and the American Studies movement emerging out of the United States. It goes on to argue that World Literature is anchored to a universalist teleology, one linked historically to an idealist intellectual genealogy. By contrast, International American Studies involves a more materialist, multidirectional emphasis that differentiates it from the U.S. appropriation of globalization to further its own strategic interests. Keywords: World Literature, Comparative Literature, International American Studies, Globalization

What does the future hold for us? Which path will humanity take? Perhaps people will finally learn from the mistakes of past generations and build a perfect society? Or they will choose a disastrous path, making the life of an individual absolutely unbearable? Science fiction writers have repeatedly tried to find answers… Science fiction is dedicated to the two opposites of the development of civilization. When people talk about fiction of the early twentieth century, they usually mean so-called “science fiction.” The first works of fantastic literature of new varieties began to appear at the end of the 19th century, and individual works even earlier. In this case we are talking about works that combine a literary plot with scientific fragments; at the same time, the work as a whole acquires a journalistic character. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, due to extra-literary factors, this form became extremely popular. Its development is influenced by the rapid growth of scientific, or more precisely, technical research, and the powerful introduction of technology into human life.

Opis:
Since its inception, International American Studies (IAS) had to define itself against the larger backdrop of global or world studies. However, as Paul Giles notes in his contribution to this special issue of RIAS marking the 10th anniversary of the journal and devoted to “International American Studies and the Question of World literature,” “World Literature in its current institutional manifestation is a much more recent phenomenon” than IAS, and may have “accumulated academic prestige more rapidly and securely than International American Studies has so far managed.”  Whatever their different temporal and institutional trajectories, however, both IAS and World literature may be seen as efforts to come to terms with the momentous historical, political, social, and technological changes of the past few decades. Put simply, both can be considered attempts to fashion new epistemological tools better suited to making sense of a globalized world, so that, no matter how (relatively?) different their objects of study might be, a set of theoretical concerns would appear to be shared by both fields. Both students of IAS and World Literature, for example, need to venture beyond the traditional categories of the nation and of national cultures, by coming to terms with the social, historical, and linguistic complexities that such a move entails. Both have to do so in a way that “opens” one’s field and yet preserves its raison d’être, especially at a time when the humanities are under attack and the defense of academic positions and credentials-all calls for “interdisciplinarity” notwithstanding-is of paramount importance. Both need to rethink the parameters of their disciplinary specializations, that is, without pulling the institutional rugs from under their feet-a precarious balancing act which, in the age of the corporate university, with its rage for classifying, evaluating, and ranking, is far from easy to perform.

Opis:
Compared to the original production within national literary systems, literary translations are traditionally regarded of lesser importance, although it is through translating that the representative works of world literature have been introduced into these very systems (Eysteinsson). The translation is constitutive of world literature, be it understood either as an aggregate of literatures expressed in all the languages of the globe, the canon of “eternal” artworks of humankind, or as the global space of inter-literary relations. The presumed universality of world literature is always already inscribed in particular literary systems through different variants and perspectives articulated by translations, the latter representing the most prominent form of cross -cultural circulation of literature. Since cultural nationalism saw literature in the standard mother tongue as the pillar of national identity and the main evidence of the nation’s creative originality, literary translations were often discarded as mere derivatives restricted to the realm of cultural consumption. In the first half of the 19 th century, however, the quality and richness of the translation repertoire began to figure also as quasi-international standards for evaluating to what degree the particular “national” language and culture were developed. As early as post-positivist comparatistics, the translation was treated as an important factor of international literary mediation (e.g. Ocvirk), but it is only the late twentieth-century translation studies that raised the reflection on translation to the level of theory enabling to ground a paradigmatic shift of methods for the entire study of literature, in national and comparative literary studies alike (Bassnett, Even-Zohar). The valorization of translation that is going on since the beginning of the 21st century has been decisively influenced by the global renaissance of Goethe’s Weltliteratur. More than a decade after Ďurišin’s theory of the world literary system and based on the reinterpretations of Goethe’s notion of world literature, a new scholarly paradigm is in full swing that attempts to transcend national literary history, comparative literature, and postcolonialism (Lawall, Casanova, Moretti, Damrosch, etc.). However, the translation was of key importance already in the historical beginnings of the conception of Weltliteratur, with which Goethe aimed at promoting humanist aesthetic cosmopolitanism, creatively reviving national literature and establishing German literature as a new hub of international literary life. The present article focuses on how experiencing translations had formed Goethe’s ideas of circulation and the self-reflection through otherness and how these ideas were recently reinterpreted by Damrosch and Thomsen. Juxtaposing works of various European and “Oriental” literatures (either in the original or in translation), Goethe reflected on his literary and cultural identity and discovered new qualities of his aesthetic experience. Generally speaking, the translation — because of its position within the asymmetries of the world systems of economy, languages, and literatures — is not only the primary mode of transnational literary circulation and cross-cultural dialogism, but also the relay for the global spread of Western geo-culture and the hegemony of its aesthetic discourse. The possibility of a particular literary text to gain access to the global literary circulation depends, among other factors, on the fact whether the work in question has been produced in a “major” Western language or has been translated in a global language.

The article touches on the issue of social axioms and underlines the importance of their relationship with the psychological functioning of an individual. So far, there were identified five universal, pancultural social axioms: Social Cynicism, Social Complexity, Reward for Application, Religiosity, and Fate Control, “which are generalised beliefs about the world and people, including social institutions, physical environment, spirituality, and life events.” They turned out to be better predictors of behaviours than values. The articles points to an important role of the axioms in the way of perceiving people and the world and it describes the dangers which may be a consequence of a certain way of thinking. Intergenerational and family transmission of beliefs opens a discussion about the educational role of families. The publication is a review of the data on the axioms and their correlates, measuring techniques, and the areas worth further research. The idea of axioms is still fairly new and the research is not abundant. So far, no Polish publication occurred which would present the knowledge about the axioms in that way. The article sets the stage for future discussions and analysis.

Enhanced Oil Recovery methods (EOR) are known since long time, but in recent years they have been used primarily in the U.S. mostly for research purposes. The increased interest in their use was in the 70's of the twentieth century, and associated with the increase in oil prices. Currently for several years there has been a return to the these methods, including offshore fields. Experience in the application of EOR methods in Poland is small, currently no exploitation is carried out using them. The purpose of this article is to present the current trends and latest technologies in enhanced oil recovery methods in terms of the applicability by the Polish oil companies. Statistical data of current and planned EOR methods in the world with special emphasis on offshore reservoirs is presented. Current trends in technological development of EOR methods are given, both which are still in the phase of laboratory tests and the first tests on fields such as: carbon dioxide flooding, water alternating gas injection, Iow salinity water injection, carbonated water injection, conventional technologies of polymer gels and thermally activated polymers.

The name of maritime sociology has been present in the Polish scientific discourse for some decades now. In the text the author proves that in the world scientific literature the caption is not present but there are many publications which refer to sociological research on maritime issues. The author concentrates on exploring how ‘sociology of maritime issues’ is conceptualized in academic journals articles. Records (including abstracts and in some cases full texts) of over two hundred and fifty articles published in 1933−2014 available through EBSCO databases were analyzed. The author addresses the problems discussed in them comparing the approaches to Polish maritime sociology as developed by professor Ludwik Janiszewski.

Opis:
Taking its cue from recent scholarship de-linking the idea of “modernity” from the idea of “the West”, this article advocates the notion of “world literature” as the body of literature that has, in the last 150 to 200 years, registered and encoded the social logic of modernity. Building on Franco Moretti’s postulation of a single world-literary system (structured not merely by difference but also by inequality) and on the theoretical work of Fredric Jameson, the article traces some of the ways in which the local detail of peripheral modernity is represented in literary texts by Thomas Mofolo, Patrick Chamoiseau, Lao She, Rohinton Mistry, Ivan Vladislavić and others, demonstrating that there is no necessary contradiction between the ideas of the “universal” and the “local” or the “national”, but that, on the contrary, there are only local universalisms (and, for that matter, only “local cosmopolitanisms”), which it becomes the task of readers to situate as completely as they can.

Cyprus issue is an important part of Turkish foreign policy concept as an element of imperial politics remain after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Today, the Cyprus problem engage Turkey, the European Union the United States and the global community. Policy towards Cyprus is only part of Ankara's relations with Brussels, which cover a wide range of economic, political and security issues. Cyprus problem is a direct factor in bilateral relations and determines the dynamics of progress in Turkey's accession negotiations, is also a cause of diplomatic strategy, which established the crucial problem in the relations between Turkey and the European Union. The case of Cyprus showed a real limits of partnership relations between Muslim, authoritarian Turkey and liberal, Christian Europe.

Alameddine highlights the violence inscribed in the practices of book selection and canon formation. In doing so, he troubles received notions of the canon, the classics, and especially of world literature, offering an alternative conceptualization of this long-debated category as an intimate, cosmopolitan assemblage of worldly texts.
