Opis:
Latest Cretaceous (Campanian to Maastrichtian) leaf fossil assemblages are described from 33 exposures ranging from the southern border of the Holy Cross Mountains (southern Poland) through the Roztocze region (south−eastern Poland) to the vicinity of L’viv (western Ukraine). The fossil assemblage is allochthonous, preserved in marine sediments, yet complete compound leaves strongly argue for the transport having been short. Krasnobród and Potelych (Potylicz) are the richest localities; both are late Campanian. The abundance of angiosperm remains in this period is explained by a marine lowstand resulting in nearby emergent vegetated areas. The flora was composed of ferns (three species), conifers (five species, including the commonest Geinitzia reichenbachii), dicotyledons (seventeen taxa; Debeya paulinae sp. nov., two other species of Debeya, and Rarytkinia polonica being the most frequent), and a single presumed monocotyledon. The eudicot clade is formalised as supersubclass Eudicotyledoneae Doyle and Hotton ex Halamski, herein. The approximately equal abundance of serrate/lobate and entire−margined dicots attests to an intermediate character of the flora between more thermophilic and polar vegetation. The material may have come from at least two communities: xeromorphic mixed Debeya−conifer forests and platanoid−Lauraceae forests growing in disturbed environments along rivers. The assemblage is most similar to approximately coeval floras from Westphalia and the Netherlands.

Opis:
Neptunian dykes were recently recorded within the Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian) Medobory reef complex of the Carpathian Foreland in western Ukraine. The Upper Badenian reefs are cut by a regular, semi-perpendicular network of intersecting fissures that penetrate the Badenian reef limestone down for more than 10 m. The dykes are filled by several generations of Sarmatian microbialites coating the fracture walls and by bedded bioclastic sediment (including foraminifers) which is more important volumetrically. The fissure fillings containing both the Sarmatian material as well as rare clasts of Badenian rocks indicate that the fissures were open during the onset of Sarmatian deposition. They originated following the emergence and fracturing of the Badenian limestones, either due to fault tectonics at basin margins induced by basin subsidence, around the Badenian-Sarmatian boundary, or to gravitational instability of large lithified Badenian reef bodies. Only one phase of fracture opening occurred. The filling of fractures was episodic, with pulses of cementation and microbial growth and sediment injection. Four different foraminiferal assemblages recorded in the neptunian dykes indicate that the process of fracture filling was long-lasting.

Opis:
Introduction: In the autumn of 2009 the authors participated in a humanitarian operation in Western Ukraine by undertaking an epidemiological investigation of an influenza-like-illness (ILI) in the L’viv Oblast region. Mobile biological survey teams took samples from civilian patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, rapid transportation of the samples, and their molecular analysis in Poland to provide accurate results. Objective: The aim of the study was the molecular and epidemiological analysis of the biological samples collected. Material and Methods: Real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR), multiplex PCR techniques, traditional Sanger Sequencing and classical viral culture methods were used. Results: Among the 124 influenza-like illness cases, ~50% (58) were positive for influenza A virus in WHO-CDC molecular assay, including subtyping. The specimens were further analyzed to confirm results and determine the genetic sequence. Phylogenetically, the nucleotide similarity of both the Ukraine specimens and reference A/California/7/2009 (pH1N1) was 99.2–99.3%. Oseltamivir resistance was not registered. HA1 region characterization showed an overall protein identity of 98.5–99.4%. Conclusions: An unexpected high contribution of influenza A was confirmed among ILI patients, as well as a very limited number of other detected viruses, indicate that the 2009 epidemic in western Ukraine was strongly related to novel influenza A/H1N1. The importance of swift sharing of information and reference laboratories networking in surveillance, as well as serving governments and international agencies in pursuing adequate actions, should be stressed.

In the 1950s, a settlement of the Funnel Beaker culture (FBC) was discovered on the Lysivka Hill in Vynnyky (Fig. 1), located in the centre of the West Ukrainian territory of this culture (Hawinskyj, Rybicka 2021). Currently, it belongs to a small group of FBC sites in Western Ukraine that have been excavated. The information presented by M. Peleshschyshyn, who conducted excavations in Vynnyky-Lysivka, regarding the relationship between the FBC community and the Tripolye culture (TC) was particularly interesting (see Rybicka 2017). He believed that Vynnyky recorded the coexistence of their population (Peleshschyshyn 1998a, 191). The burnt daub clusters discovered at that time could probably have been the remains of dwellings. The aim of the research carried out since 2016 was to verify the hypotheses of M. Peleshschyshyn (1998a) in the context of the FBC-TC relationship (Hawinskyj, Rybicka 2021) and to establish the date of the settlement usage in Vynnyky-Lysivka. Radiocarbon dating obtained for the samples from the features from the northern zone of the settlement, allow the researchers to be placed Vynnyky-Lysivka in the period 3500–3360 BC and synchronized with the third phase of the southeastern FBC group.

Opis:
Zooxanthellate corals in the Badenian (Langhian to lower Serravallian) of western Ukraine occur in different lithofacies, but are most abundant in the upper Badenian coralgal reefs of the Ternopil Beds. The coral assemblage consists of five genera, with two predominant (Tarbellastraea and Porites) and three strongly subordinate (Favia, Heliastraea, Siderastrea). The present study is the first record of Heliastraea defrancei in the Fore-Carpathian Basin. The taxonomic composition of the corals indicates that their development occurred in conditions of some ecological stress, most probably connected with climate (location at the northern limit of coral distribution) and sedimentary environment (possible influx of terrigenous material). The coral assemblage shows similarities to numerous fossil reefs of Miocene age from the Paratethyan and Mediterranean realms.

Opis:
The late Badenian (early Serravallian) conoideans from the Pidhirtsi Beds of western Ukraine (central Paratethys) have been investigated by means of a comprehensive and easy-to-perform morphometric approach, allowing the characterisation of eleven species, of which seven are new to science: Mangelia angulicosta sp. nov., M. larga sp. nov., M. pseudorugulosa sp. nov., M. odovychenae sp. nov., Bela varovtsiana sp. nov., Bela? robusta sp. nov., Pyrgocythara turrispiralata sp. nov. Additionally we also identified Raphitoma cf. R. ringicula, Andonia sp. aff. A. transsylvanica, Teretia cf. T. turritelloides, and Haedropleura sp. aff. H. septangularis. The relative high number of new species documented, relative to the total previously known from this stratigraphic interval, is interpreted as resulting mainly from combined methodological (dearth of taxonomic studies on Ukrainian conoideans) and environmental (high degree of habitat fragmentation in reef setting) factors. The conoideans documented herein add important information regarding palaeoclimaticalogical and palaeobiogeographical interpretations of the Serravallian Paratethys. The conoideans display strong affinity at the species level and complete overlap at the genus level with Neogene Proto-Mediterranean−Atlantic conoideans, thereby challenging the interpretation of late Badenian Paratethyan macrofaunal assemblage endemism. The lack of typical warm-water indicators (e.g., Conidae, Clavatulidae, or Pseudomelatomidae) within the studied material supports the interpretation that the fauna thrived during the late phase and/or soon after the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition (14.2−13.8 Ma).

The town of Zhovkva (Żółkiew) belongs to the late Renaissance foundations of private resident towns in Western Ukraine (Halychyna region) from the late 16th century. In accordance with historical sources, this city was founded by Stanisław Żółkiewski [2] in 1594. Urban-spatial structure of the town was designed according to the Renaissance ideal city. The city has a well-preserved original planning structure and a number of architectural monuments that are associated with it. The city consisted of two conjugated parts: the owner’s castle and the fortifi ed middletown. The combination of these two parts was of a specifi c nature – when the central square of the town is combined with the facade of the castle complex. On the base of the historical and urban studies presented the hypothesis that town of Zhovkva (Żółkiew) is an unique example of late Renaissance urbanism. The start of town build was in 1594 according to a project based on the concept of “ideal town” from the book of Italian architect Pietro Cataneo. We are thinking, that the author of the project and plan of town was Paolo Clamensi – Italian architect, worked in Lviv at the end of 16th century. The towns have a well-preserved original Renaissance planning structure and a number of architectural monuments that are connected with it.

Echinoderms from the Badenian (Middle Miocene) of the Fore-Carpathian Basin of western Ukraine are facies restricted. The Mykolaiv Beds, stratigraphically older, yielded the starfish Astropecten forbesi (complete skeletons), two genera of sand dollars (Parascutella, Parmulechinus), and numerous other echinoids of the genera Psammechinus , Echinocyamus, Spatangus, Hemipatagus, Echinocardium, Clypeaster, Echinolampas, and Conolampas. The stratigraphically younger, calcareous Ternopil Beds yielded Eucidaris (complete coronae, isolated spines), Arbacina , Brissus, and Rhabdobrissus. Sixteen species of echinoids are distinguished and/or commented. A new brissid, Rhabdobrissus tarnopolensis sp. nov., is established. A mass occurrence of some species (Psammechinus dubius and Hemipatagus ocellatus) contrasts with that of mass aggregations (sand dollars and Echinocardium leopolitanum) by dynamic events in selected layers of proximal tempestites. Of special note is the occurrence of very small specimens, interpreted as juveniles (‘babies’) having been swept out of their restricted biotopes (‘nurseries’). Some species hitherto regarded as of Early Miocene age, and the problem of their persistence beyond the Fore-Carpathian Basin and/or migration into that basin during the Middle Miocene transgression are discussed.

The post-glacial areas are characterized by favorable conditions for the formation of wetlands as a result of the widespread occurrence of depressions without outflow - center for the development of wetlands. The studies of morphogenetic conditions of the wetland development in Volhynian Polissia within the territory of Ukraine and the formation of their water regime reveal several features of their distribution and typological variety. The location of wetlands were characterized in reference to the shape of base/subsoil and its lithology. The typical structure of post-lacustrine, paludificational, riverside and spring peatlands of the Volhynian Polissia were shown and their development were also discussed. The wetland evolution under the influence of the postglacial landscape degradation leads to disappearance of the depression wetlands in glacial forms, increase of the peat bog trophicity and the level of peat dissolution. The supply conditions and characteristics of water regime are determined for separate peatlands. According to the origin and water flow/supply four types of wetland were extracted: ombrogenic, topogenic, soligenic and fluviogenic. It was found that the reasons of the high marshes areas (21%) in Volhynian Polissia are the geological and geomorphological conditions retaining/stopping the runoff and also local groundwater circulation system.

The genus Diodora Gray, 1821 is widely represented in the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys with specimens usually attributed to D. graeca (Linnaeus, 1758) or D. italic (Defrance, 1820), well-known recent species of the Atlantic / Mediterranean Basin. In samples from the Upper Badenian of Western Ukraine we found two clusters of Diodora specimens, showing a similarity with these species, but a review of shell diagnostic characters using a statistical approach has revealed their clear conchological separateness. The first species from Varovtsi and Horodok is attributed herein to D. nodosa (Eichwald, 1830), whereas the second species from Maksymivka is described as a new species, D. stalennuyi sp. nov. We consider that these molluscs inhabited the Polish-Ukrainian marginal part of the Late Badenian Basin. Detailed descriptions of the protoconch and teleoconch morphology of the taxa involved, including SEM images, are presented.

The article discusses the current historiography of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine (CPWU), the main communist organisation in the south-eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. Under that name the party was established in 1923 and from 1925 to 1938 (i.e. when the party was disbanded) it possessed the status of an autonomous organisation of the Communist Party of Poland. In fact, during that period the CPWU was directly dependent on the leadership of the communist party in the USSR, which is important to note. Despite several decades of Ukraine being ruled by communists, the CPWU had not been studied satisfactorily or completely impartially by Soviet historians. The unsatisfactory state of knowledge of the CPWU deprives us of opportunities to understand the important role the party played in preparing the ground for Soviet rule, which began (with a three-year gap) in 1939.

Opis:
The decapod fauna from the Badenian (middle Miocene) deposits of western Ukraine comprises in total 31 taxa: 20 species, 9 taxa left in open nomenclature, and 2 determined at family level. Thirteen of these taxa are reported for the first time from the territory of Ukraine. Among them are the first records of Trapezia glaessneri Müller, 1976 in the Fore-Carpathian Basin and Pachycheles sp. in Paratethys. One taxon (Petrolisthes sp. A) probably represents a new species. The occurrence of this significant decapod fauna is restricted almost exclusively to the Upper Badenian (i.e., early Serravallian) coralgal reefs of the Ternopil Beds. The taxonomic composition of the decapods indicates that the Late Badenian depositional environment was a shallow marine basin dominated by reefs that developed in warm-to-tropical waters of oceanic salinity. The decapod assemblage from the Ternopil Beds is similar in its taxonomic composition to numerous decapod faunules from fossil reefs of Eocene to Miocene age from the Mediterranean realm and of Miocene age from Paratethys. In contrast, decapod remains are very scarce in Badenian siliciclastic deposits (Mikolaiv Beds) and are represented by the most resistant skeletal elements, i.e., dactyli and fixed fingers. This scarcity was caused by the high-energy environment, with frequent episodes of redeposition, which disintegrated and abraded the decapod remains. Opis:
The following Late Jurassic depositional systems have been recognized in the WUkrainian and SE Polish margin of the East European Platform: shelf slope/basin, open shelf, carbonate ramp, siliciclastic shelf, fluvial/playa, deltaic/swamp, restricted marine/evaporate lagoon. Three depositional megasequences have been identified. Their upper boundaries have been dated by means of targeted stratigraphic studies, compilation of existing data and reinterpretation of stratigraphic correlation concepts respectively as: lower Kimmeridgian divisum/hypselocyclum zones boundary, uppermost upper Kimmeridgian and lower Berriasian. Analysis of thickness and depositional system architecture within themegasequences in six regional cross-sections indicates that depocentre was located in the SW margin of the Mid-Polish Trough during Oxfordian and early Kimmeridgian times and propagated in Tithonian time to the Lviv region. This can be explained by changes in the palaeostress field. Approximately N–S oriented extension during Oxfordian and earliest Kimmeridgian times was replaced by approximately NE–SW oriented extension in Tithonian time. The thickness pattern of the megasequences as well as proximity trends of the system tracts within the sequences clearly coincide with the depocentre propagation.

Opis:
The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate sediments developed in a narrow, Ukrainian part of the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep show high facies diversity. Based upon thin section studies, the authors identified eleven principal microfacies varieties. Three main stages of development of carbonate platform were distinguished: (i) Oxfordian–Early Kimmeridgian, (ii) Kimmeridgian–Tithonian, and (iii) Berriasian–Valanginian. The Oxfordian sediments are rather thin and represent both the outer and inner, distally steepened ramp facies. In the Late Kimmeridgian and, mainly, in the Tithonian, the intensive growth of rimmed platform took place with distinct zones of peritidal, margin barrier and platform slope, bearing calciturbidite facies. Development of the rimmed platform was controlled by synsedimentary tectonic movements along faults rejuvenated southwest of the Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone. In the Berriasian–Valanginian, the dominant process was sedimentation onto not-rimmed platform controlled by small sea-level changes. Both the facies development and literature data indicate that the Late Jurassic sedimentation in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement shows considerable differences in comparison to that of the Polish part. In the studied successions, large Oxfordian microbial-siliceous sponge reef complexes, known from the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement and other areas in Europe, were rare. In the study area carbonate buildups were encountered mainly in the intervals representing the Upper Kimmeridgian–Tithonian where small, microbial-sponge and microbial-coral biostromes or patch-reefs were formed. Their growth was presumably restricted to a narrow zone of the upper slope, close to ooidal-bioclastic margin platform facies. In the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement, the Late Jurassic sedimentation took place on a vast, homoclinal ramp while in the Ukrainian part it proceeded on a narrow, distally steepened ramp and rimmed platform with distinct marginal platform barrier. Similar platform facies distribution in both regions appeared mainly in the Early Cretaceous, although with some stratigraphical differences. The facies distribution of the Upper Jurassic sediments was closely controlled by the block structure of the basement and by orientation of the main, transcontinental Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone, which supports the opinion on its activity in the Mesozoic era. The Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement located over the Palaeozoic Kokhanivka Block, between the Krakovets and Holy Cross fault zones, includes predominantly the slope, marginal and inner platform facies. Facies observed over the Palaeozoic Rava Ruska Block (south-western part of the East-European Platform), between the Holy Cross and Rava Ruska fault zones, represents mainly the inner platform and the peri-shore deposits.

Opis:
Moundlike, globular to hemispherical bryozoan colonies of Celleporina medoborensis sp. nov. are documented from the calcareous organodetrital, slightly marly facies of the Lower Sarmatian (Volhynian) serpulid-microbialite reefs, in the Polupanivka and Ditkivtsi quarries (Medobory Hills), located at the northeastern margin of the Carpathian Foreland Basin (Central Paratethys) in western Ukraine. The colonies of C. medoborensis are multilamellar, often with a subcircular hole and occur together with numerous cyclostome bryozoans (crisiids, tubuliporinids, branching colonies of entalophoroids) as well as schizoporellid and cryptosulid cheilostomes, accompanied by a few macro- and micro-fossil taxa. The combination of morphological characters such as: thick radial ribs in the pseudoporous, variably-shaped area of the ovicell, and one or two small adventitious oral, as well as large vicarious avicularia are the main characteristic features of species. The rich occurrence of the celleporiform colonies of C. medoborensis sp. nov. within the fine-grained calcareous sands of Polupanivka and Ditkivtsi suggests a shallow-water setting and high availability of soft substrates, probably dominated by calcareous algae upon which the bryozoans may have settled in the Medobory reef biota during the Early Sarmatian.

Contamination of surface soil horizons with heavy metals is usually related to long-lasting air pollution and might potentially affect soil fauna, as well as plant growth, harvesting and health of plant consumer. In order to estimate potential health risk, we investigated surface and subsurface soil contamination with heavy metals in avable area in one of the most industrialized region of western Ukraine, western Podole Upland. In total 80 samples from the area of about 35 km2 were sampled and analyzed for content of zinc, nickel, copper, cobalt, lead, arsenic and quicksilver. The research revealed several anomalies, where the content of these elements exceed 3-5 Ukrainian quality guidance for avable soils. Soils are the most contaminated with arsenic and quicksilver, with maximum concentrations exceeding local geochemical background about 20 times. Maximum nickel and zinc concentrations are about 10 times higher than the background while the content of copper and cobalt is elevated up to several times.
Stężenie niklu i cynku wynosi maksymalnie około 10 razy więcej, niż przewiduje norma, podczas gdy zawartość miedzi i kobaltu jest podwyższona kilkukrotnie.

The three aims of the study were to: 1) evaluate the content of selenium and polyphenols, and to assess the reductive potential (FRAP test) and ability to deactivate ABTS•+ cation radicals in C. officinalis, H. perforatum, M. x piperita and S. marianum from Poland and Ukraine; 2) define the diversification in concentrations of selenium and polyphenols and in levels of ABTS activity and FRAP reductive potential within the examined species in relation to their location; and 3) evaluate the inter-dependencies between selenium, total polyphenol concentration, ABTS and FRAP activity, in the examined plants. We observed differences in the content of total polyphenols and antioxidative activity between the herb species and the location. Most selenium was found in M. x piperita and S. marianum from western Ukraine, with Polish H. perforatum from Pomerania and M. x piperita from Podlasie representing the highest TP content and antioxidative potential. A clear and significant relationship between the content of Se and antioxidative activity (ABTS and FRAP), and also between total polyphenols and antioxidative activity was noted only in H. perforatum. In C. officinalis a significant relationship was noted between Se and both total polyphenols and antioxidative potential. In M. x piperita a significant dependency was found between total polyphenols and antioxidative potential. The results of our research indicate a different role of selenium as an antioxidant in H. perforatum and C. officinalis, as well as polyphenols in H. perforatum and M. x piperita in dependence on the harvesting regions.

Opis:
In south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, the Outer Carpathian orogen and the Carpathian Foredeep developed in the foreland of the East-European Platform (Baltica). The area consists of a number of tectonic units included in the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ): the Łysogóry–Radom and Małopolska blocks in the territory of Poland, and the Rava Rus’ka Zone, Kokhanivka Zone and Leżajsk Massif in the Ukraine. The development of the TESZ began in the (?Middle) Late Neoproterozoic and was associated with rifting processes taking place along the western edge of the East-European Craton (Baltica) during the break-up of the Rodinia/ Pannotia supercontinent. The passive margin of Baltica evolved into the TESZ during collisional and/or strike-slip movements. In the TESZ (Małopolska Block and Leżajsk Massif), Ediacaran flysch-type siliciclastics were affected by weak metamorphism and folding during the Cadomian orogeny. The development of Cambrian deposits in the East-European Craton, Łysogóry–Radom Block, northeastern part of the Małopolska Block (Kielce Fold Belt) and in the Rava Rus’ka and Kokhanivka zones was associated with the post-rift thermal subsidence. Tectonic movements (so-called Sandomierz phase), which occurred probably due to an oblique collision of the Małopolska Block (included into the passive margin of Baltica) and the East-European Craton during late Middle Cambrian to Late Cambrian (possibly also Early Ordovician) times, resulted in the following: (1) development of stratigraphical (?erosional) gaps in the Middle and Upper Cambrian sections of the Lublin–Podlasie slope of the East-European Craton and the Kielce Fold Belt in the Małopolska Block; (2) intense tectonic subsidence of the Łysogóry–Radom Block during the deposition of Middle and Upper Cambrian sediments; (3) development of compressional folds in the Lower Cambrian to lower Middle Cambrian deposits of the Kielce Fold Belt on the Małopolska Block. Ordovician–Silurian series were deposited in a typical flexural foredeep basin, in which subsidence and deposition rates accelerated during Late Silurian (Ludlow–Pridoli) and Early Devonian (Lochkovian) times. It is postulated that the present position of the Małopolska Block relative to the Łysogóry–Radom Block and East-European Craton resulted from post-Silurian dextral movements between the Małopolska Block and the East-European Craton. Devonian–Carboniferous deposits occur only in the Małopolska Block located in the Variscan foreland. The Middle-Late Devonian and Early Carboniferous shallow-marine carbonate platforms developed under an extensional regime. The siliciclastic Upper Visean–Lower Namurian A Culm series were deposited in the flexural Variscan foreland basin. During the Late Namurian A, the Małopolska Block was uplifted in response to the build-up of compressional foreland stresses. During post-Carboniferous times, the Precambrian and Palaeozoic deposits were subject to erosion and restructuring during the Alpine orogeny.

The Upper Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequence from the Kolodiiv section (East Carpathian Fore land) has been palaeomagnetically studied. Almost all samples displayed moderate to high positive palaeomagnetic inclinations and declinations en closed between 320° and 40°. How ever, one sample from the fossil soil of the last inter glacial pedocomplex (at 16.6 m pro file depth) was reverse magnetized and there fore can be correlated with the Blake Palaeomagnetic Event. Consequently that palaeosol can be related to (Oxygen Isotope Stage) OIS 5e1. An other sample from the Dubno 1 interstadial palaeosol demonstrated southern declination and significant lowering of inclination (up to 40°). This might be a record of the Laschamp Palaeomagnetic Event or of any Late Pleistocene palaeomagnetic excursion. The magnetic susceptibility and anhysteretic remanent magnetization data reflect the presence of several soils forming during the warm conditions of OIS 5 and the complex nature of the Eemian warming. Two palaeosols that developed between ca.115 ka and 120 ka indicate at least two climatic optima during the Eemian. High values of magnetic susceptibility (up to 300 Ą 10-6 SI units) noted in the middle of the section that contains slump deposits (9.5 m to 11m of depth) suggest that this material was derived from older soils of inter glacial type.

The aim of this study is to compare the assemblages of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton from the Middle Miocene sediments from SE Poland and western Ukraine. Detailed investigations revealed a high degree of similarity of foraminiferal assemblages of the Pecten/Spirialis beds of Poland and the Kosiv Formation of Ukraine. Assemblages from both areas are characterized by numerous arenaceous species of foraminifera (Hyperammina granulosa, Ammodiscus miocenicus, Haplophragmoides indentatus, H. laminatus), radiolarians, pteropods and index planktic species Velapertina indigena. High degrees of similarity also display assemblages from the Krakowiec beds (Poland) and the Dashava Formation (Ukraine). The lower parts of both subdivisions are characterized by the presence of Anomalinoides dividens. Saccammina sarmatica, Bolivina sarmatica, Brizalina nisporenica, and Porosononion granosum occur in the upper parts. Chloropycean Halicoryne morelleti is a characteristic element of the assemblages. The calcareous nannoplankton assemblages contain almost identical species. The deposits lying above the evaporites (which belong to the NN6 zone) are included into the NN6, undivided NN6-NN7, and NN7 zones. The gradual impoverishment of the species of the upper part of NN6 and the lower part of NN7 zones is observed. The assemblages of the Krakowiec beds and the upper part of the Kosiv and Dashava formations are of low species diversity and are mainly restricted to a few species with high abundance. The assemblage is composed of placoliths (Coccolithus and Reticulofenestra species), high number of the reworked nannofossils and damaged elements.

The Niżniów Formation directly onlaps a Palaeozoic substrate and consists of transgressive cliff-derived conglomerates, and sandstones and marls which pass laterally into shallow marine carbonates: mainly biomicrites, oncomicrites, and pelmicrites with an abundant benthic fauna dominated by nerineid gastropods. The thickness of the formation in the area studied ranges from 0 to more than 20 metres and was controlled bymorphology of the pre-transgression substrate (mainly built of Devonian clastic rocks), synsedimentary fault tectonics and pre-mid-Albian erosion. The age of the Niżniów Formation can be determined, on the evidence of benthic foraminifers encountered in thin sections, as most probably late Tithonian-early Berriasian.

The Upper Badenian marly shales overlying gypsum and the Ratyn Limestone at Shchyrets, Ukraine, contain moderately to well-preserved benthic (calcareous only) and planktonic foraminifers, and palynofacies dominated by bisaccate pollen grains, presumably transported by wind. Both foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages indicate an open marine environment with normal-marine salinity and cool waters. The palaeodepth was ca. 50 m except for the uppermost part of the section studied, where a distinctive deepening is indicated by the dominance of Uvigerina in benthic foraminiferal assemblages and a high P/B ratio. The water was thermally stratified and the differences between the bottom water and the water column show an upwards-increasing trend. Bulimina and Globocassidulina are the most common and dominant component of benthic foraminiferal assemblages, except for the uppermost part where Uvigerina dominates the assemblage. The composition of benthic foraminifer assemblages and δ13C values of foraminifers indicate nutrient-rich waters and mesotrophic to eutrotrophic environments in surface waters, and low oxygenation at the sea floor in the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin during the Late Badenian.

Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

This paper contains palynological and stratigraphical characteristics of the selected Cambrian sections encountered in the basement of the north-eastern part of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Outer Carpathian margin in south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, as well as verification of the stratigraphical position of rocks recognised so far in several sections in western Ukraine. The acritarch assemblages of the Cambrian System Series 2 are dominated by species of the characteristic early Cambrian genus Skiagia. The Cambrian Series 3 beds are documented by the assemblages with numerous specimens of the Adara alea, Cristallinium cambriense, Heliosphaeridium notatum, Eliasum llaniscum, Multiplicisphaeridium martae, and Comasphaeridium longispinosum. Furongian sediments are evidenced by strongly taxonomically diversified assemblages with large quantities of acritarchs, containing genera Timofeevia, Vulcanisphaera, Ninadiacrodium, Pirea, Leiofusa, Lusatia, or Polygonium, as well as taxa characterized by diacrodial symmetry. These assemblages are dominated by such genera, as: Dasydiacrodium or Acanthodiacrodium, and also by specimens with large polar opening of the central body, belonging to acritarchs of the “galeate” group. Within the studied Cambrian sediments, nine acritarch assemblages of differing composition were distinguished. These assemblages were correlated with faunistic zones. Ages younger than Palaeozoic, identified in some of the analysed Ukrainian sections, were determined basing on very well preserved assemblages of spores and pollen.

Opis:
In September 1939, in accordance with secret agreements concluded with Germany, the Soviets occupied the territories of so-called Western Ukraine, meaning Poland’s eastern voivodeships. In November, those territories were annexed by the USSR. Soviet administrative structures were introduced there, and the process of implementing radical socio-economic transformations was launched. The process of changes began by profound ownership transformations, comprising nationalisation of industry, transport, telecommunications, banks. Transformations also affected agriculture. Latifunds, lands of convents and owned by high-ranking state officials, were confiscated. Lands were nationalised. The authorities started creating state farms and farming co-operatives. All land purchase/ sale transactions were forbidden. In December 1939, the ruble became the official currency. The Polish zloty was withdrawn from official circulation. The introduced changes set the foundations for a new economic system. The second aim of Soviet authorities was to industrialise Western Ukraine. In the plan for 1940, the development of the industrial potential of Lwów (Lviv) – a city that had until then been primarily an academic and cultural centre – was deemed a task of particular importance, for ideological reasons. Economic transformations triggered radical social changes, an element of shaping society to emulate the Soviet model. Implemented changes met with ambiguous reactions of different social groups. For example, the collectivisation of agriculture was opposed by peasants-owners of private farms. However, the process was supported by the rural poor, that hoped for a better life thanks to socialism. The authorities suppressed all types of resistance with ruthless administrative methods.

Opis:
The history of archaeological research on the Trypillian sites in the western regions of Ukraine can be subdivided into four stages, each of which is marked by certain achievements. The first explorations resulted in the discovery of new archaeological objects, which gave rise to the discussion about the interpretation of constructions and functions of the settlements. The questions related to chronology, periodization, and excavation methodology were discussed as well. However, this activity was irregular and spontaneous, and the materials of many sites were scattered over different museums of Europe. The later stages of research gave very important data about the material and sacral components of the Trypillian culture, as well as its development, ways of adaptation to natural conditions, relative chronology of the sites, and their distribution. In the last years, the systematic excavations conducted at the reference site of Bodaki shed an important light on the economic basics of Trypillia. They also gave new materials for reconstructing the connections between the north-western and central areas of the culture, and its connections with the coeval farming-herding cultures of Europe.

The consequences of global climate change are a decrease in precipitation as well as an increase in the length of the period with high temperatures from spring to autumn. The climate change intensified the negative consequences of land reclamation and regulation of rivers by dams in Ukraine in the 20th century. The modern landscape of the Circum-Pontic and Circum-Azov regions in Ukraine has undergone desertification, and a multiple reduction in the freshwater runoff has manifested itself in a violation of the water balance of soils and their salinization. In addition to the climate change and anthropic landscape transformations, most upland areas in southern Ukraine have been converted into farmland, systematically fertilized and treated with pesticides and herbicides. Total plowing of the territory also led to soil erosion and degradation. The global climate change and the impact of human activity have affected the diversity of the steppe fauna as well. The questions of the influence of soil humidity on the diversity of epigeic arthropods were considered on the example of ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Soil moisture is one of the key factors that determines their diversity.

The Veliky Kamenets section in the eastern part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt in the Ukrainian Carpathians shows a well exposed, 83 m thick succession composed of Jurassic and lowermost Cretaceous (Berriasian) deposits. The terrigenous part of the section includes: gravels with a sandy matrix (unit 1A), massive grey-green sandstones (unit 1B) and shales with intercalations of siltstones/sandstones and oyster/gastropod lumachelles (unit 2). Organic-walled dinoflagellates document the Toarcian-Aalenian age of the siliciclastic deposits of unit 2. The carbonate part of the succession embraces: stromatactis mud-mounds interfingering with crinoidal limestones (unit 3A), lower nodular limestones (unit 3B), cherty limestones (unit 3C), upper nodular limestones (unit 3D), pink pelitic limestones (unit 3E), limestones with a volcanogenic bed (unit 5) and limestone breccia limestones (unit 6). This succession has yielded abundant ammonites from the Bathonian, Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian (with a stratigraphical hiatus covering the Callovian and Lower Oxfordian), as well as calcareous dinoflagellates (from the Upper Oxfordian towards the top of the succession), and calpionellids (in the Tithonian and Berriasian). Detailed stratigraphical study of the succession based both on ammonites and microfossils has resulted in the recognition of biostratigraphical units and their correlation with the chronostratigraphical scale. The microfacies recognized in the pelagic part of the succession include: the “filament” (Bositra) microfacies (Bathonian), the planktonic foraminifer microfacies (Oxfordian), the Saccocoma microfacies (Kimmeridgian to Upper Tithonian), and the calpionellid microfacies (Upper Tithonian–Berriasian). The volcanogenic rocks (lava flows and volcanic ash) appear in the topmost part of the succession (units 4 to 6) and this volcanic event is very precisely located in the Elliptica-Simplex chrons of the Middle and Late Berriasian.

The Mykolaiv Sands are a huge lithosome of Middle Miocene (Badenian) age, accommodated within the Fore-Carpathian Basin in the Western Ukraine. Typically developed in the area of Opole Minor, it spreads across adjacent regions of Opole to cover an area of about 1300 km2. The varied sedimentary structures and ubiquitous burrows, indicate their development as a stack of sand shoals or related bodies, up to a few tens of metres thick, some of which temporarily reached sea level. Amidst the shoals, storm scours intermittently formed channel-like infills, some with residual lags at the base. The reversed density stratification and/or an increasing gravity gradient involved mass movements, some of which may have been triggered by seismic shocks focused at the shore or the adjacent hinterland of Podolia and Volhynia. Special attention is paid to the diverse fossils, all taphonomically filtered (aragonite shells and chitinous carapaces being lost), but which locally are mass-aggregated. They typify particular sand sets/bodies, to form allochthonous assemblages, some members of which (the cirripedes Scalpellum and Creusia, the shark Hemipristis, the ray Myliobatis) are newly recognized in the Ukrainian part of the Fore-Carpathian Basin. The others enrich considerably the faunal content of the Middle Miocene (Badenian) Paratethyan basins, either in terms of taxonomic diversity, or the eco-taphonomy of selected taxa (the starfish Astropecten, diverse echinoids). The whole faunal content of the Mykolaiv Sands may owe its profuse development to the global Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum of early Badenian age.

Corylus and Alnus trees are common throughout Western Ukraine. They are important producers of allergenic airborne pollen in the environment of Lviv city. The objective of this study was to examine the dynamics of the Corylus and Alnus air pollen concentration in Lviv with reference to changes in weather conditions. Pollen data (2011-2015) were obtained by the gravimetric method for a site located at the center of Lviv city. The total annual Corylus pollen sums varied from 281 to 724, while the Alnus sums were several times more abundant and varied from 656 to 2505. There were 43 days of difference in start dates of the Corylus pollen season. The start dates for the Alnus pollen season showed a 30-day difference over the 5 years. The season duration differed by 17 days for Corylus and 31 days for Alnus. There is some evidence of synchronous patterns for Corylus and Alnus pollen seasons in Lviv. A trend was observed towards earlier starts of seasons that corresponded to a gradual increase in the average February temperature over 2011-2015.
Gatunki z rodzaju Corylus i Alnus występują powszechnie na terenie całej zachodniej Ukrainy. Są one istotnymi producentami alergennego pyłku w powietrzu Lwowa. Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie dynamiki stężenia pyłku Corylus i Alnus w powietrzu Lwowa w odniesieniu do zmian w warunkach pogodowych. Obserwowano synchroniczny przebieg sezonów pyłkowych Corylus i Alnus we Lwowie.

In today's world the general idea has arisen that tourism management should stand in accord with the sustainable development which is one of the priorities of the territorial policy of the European Union. This concept has been reflected in numerous European documents, which emphasize the necessity for the reinforcement of the regional identity and for the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The main assumption of hereby article is the concept that tourism is one of the main modern anthropogenic factors, affecting the natural environment . The author notices that the „sentimental” tourism has remained stable for many years now. Such an approach to „sentimental” tourism shows the potential for the development especially in the case of Polish tourists to Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania, as these directions are connected with the territories previously inhabited by Poles, who left huge cultural and natural heritage behind. The aim of the article is to explore the topic of „sentimental” tourism in the context of sustainable development. This type of tourism is connected with trips directed towards searching the places for sightseeing, including the objects of tradition and history such as castles, churches, graveyards, mansions, statues and others. They all constitute the feeling of cultural identity. „Sentimental” tourism is important due to the fact that it evokes childhood memories and they convey the same meaning as they used to in the times of glory. The visitors possess various interests. Some are in search for the historical places, some others with those connected with literature, still others look for the places associated with their ancestors. Therefore it is so important to maintain these objects untouched in character which lingers in the consciousness of Polish visitors. „Sentimental” tourism also gives rise to the economic development of the region, ensuring work places for many tourist oriented services such as tourist information centres, historical monuments and buildings restoration and conservation institutions. It also contributes to the development of agriculture in the context of sustainability.

The paper presents the issue of house constructions from the second half of the 4th millennium BC in western Ukraine and northern Moldova. While numerous reports concerning the dwellings of the Funnel Beaker Culture from the area east of the Bug River has been published, these accounts did not provide enough information to precisely assess their construction details. The first such structure whose features can be described in detail is the house from the site Lysivka in Vynnyky. The construction of the dwelling was lightweight, analogous to residential structures from the eastern group of the Funnel Beaker Culture. Another debatable topic was the characteristics of houses of the Gordinești group of the Tripolye Culture. Archaeological research at the site of Gordinești II-Stînca goală proved that communities of the late stage of this culture lived in lightweight houses that were built using clay. Neither the residential structures from the Vynnyky-Lysivka site, nor those from the site of Gordineşti II-Stînca goală, should be regardedas analogy to the classical “ploshchadkas” of the Tripolye Culture.

Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the palynological content of the Upper Badenian strata at Kudryntsi (western Ukraine) indicate that this succession was deposited in variable environments. The basal siliciclastic series shows a very low content of palynological organic matter and palynofacies, which indicate a restricted environment and/or unfavourable conditions for the palynomorph preservation. The presence of dinoflagellate cysts (and composition of their assemblages) in the upper part of organodetrital limestones and the overlying rhodoid limestones indicates a typical shelf environment. Taxonomically variable dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from particular samples reflect gradual environmental changes – from environments of slightly increased salinity of seawater (strata overlying the siliciclastic series) to open marine, more remote environments during deposition of the upper part of the section examined. The gradual deepening of the sea and decrease of salinity is supported also by the succession of foraminiferal assemblages, which undergo gradual changes from Elphidium spp. assemblages, through Miliolidae assemblage, Lobatula lobatula assemblage, Neoconorbina spp. assemblage to Cibicidoides assemblage. The Late Badenian foraminiferal assemblage from Kudryntsi contains two species common for the Sarmatian, i.e. Elphidium reginum and Elphidium koberi, the latter species known so far from the Sarmatian.

Opis:
Ammonite distribution patterns and carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from the Lipnik-Kije (Poland) and Dubovcy (Ukraine) sections allow us to propose a model of sea water paleo-circulation in central Europe for the Coniacian-Santonian interval. The tectonic evolution of the south-eastern part of Poland, and expansion of the Krukienic Island areas, appears to have been one of the most important factors affecting paleotemperatures and the distribution of ammonite faunas in the shallow, epicontinental sea in this part of Europe. In the Lipnik-Kije section, low-latitude Tethyan ammonites, especially of the genera Nowakites, Parapuzosia and Saghalinites, are mixed with the cold water loving ammonite genus Kitchinites in the Lower Santonian. In the Dubovcy section (western Ukraine), Tethyan ammonites disappear abruptly in the earliest Santonian, giving place to temperate ammonites of the Kitchinites group in the early Early Santonian and to Boreal belemnites of the genus Gonioteuthis in the Middle and Late Santonian. Despite evidence for the effects of diagenesis in both sections, bulk-rock δ18O records from the limestones support higher seawater paleotemperatures in the Polish sea and cooler conditions in the western Ukraine. The proposed paleo-circulation model and paleotemperature distribution across Europe is supported independently by changes in faunal and nannoflora evidence (ammonites, foraminifera and nannoplankton), and rather unexpectedly with the bulk δ18O data. These data allow the recognition of the end-Coniacian–Early Santonian cooling event, resulting from cold currents flowing from the north, which is traceable, with different magnitude, in several European sections. Facies changes in both sections are related to the input of terrigenous material, and linked to Subhercynian tectonic movements which affected the eastern (Ukrainian) and central (Holy Cross) segment of the Mid Polish Trough at different times. Uplift and sediment input moved westwards through time. Clastic input is detectable at the Coniacian–Santonian boundary in the Ukrainian segment. Similar facies changes reached the Holy Cross segment in Poland distinctly later, somewhen in the Middle Santonian. It is likely that tectonics together with paleo-circulation changes markedly restricted or even cut-off the western Ukraine area from Tethyan ocean influences in the Early Santonian.

The authority of the Communist Party undermining the newly created „informal” organizations and political parties whose activities led to a breach of the monopoly of Communist Party, and the formation of a multiparty system. Crisis could not be avoided to unsatisfactory work of the apparatchiks of primary organizations (especially large industrial enterprises).

Reconstruction of burial and thermal history was modelled for the Mesozoic strata in the basement of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep and in the marginal part of the Outer Carpathians. The 1-D modelling was carried out in profiles of the wells located in the area between Tarnogród and Stryi towns. In the Polish part, the modelling were performed in the profiles of the Księżpol 15, Lubliniec 9, Markowice 2 and Opaka 1 wells, and in the Ukrainian part in the profiles of the Chornokuntsi 1, Korolyn 6, Mosty 2, Podiltsi 1 and Voloshcha 1 wells. The geochemical characteristics of the Mesozoic stratigraphical horizons revealed that the best features of source rocks were present in the Middle Jurassic strata in the Polish part of the study area and in the Middle and Upper Jurassic strata in the Ukrainian part. Within these strata, the horizons of source rocks were distinguished and their quantitative evaluations were characterized. For these horizons, reconstruction of processes for hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were performed. The source rocks in the Polish part reached maturity only in the initial phase of “oil window”. However, the maturity achieved towards the end of the Upper Jurassic was insufficient to exceed the 10% threshold of the transformation degree for hydrocarbon generation. Therefore, the amount of generated hydrocarbons was minimal. Slightly higher maturity of organic matter in the Ukrainian part resulted in exceeding the thresholds of kerogen transformation and the initiation of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion processes. The process began after the deposition of thicker Miocene formations and developed even up to the main phase of the "oil window". The amount of the generated hydrocarbons reached ca. 150 mg/g TOC with an insignificant volume of expulsion.

The article reviews the electrophysiological characteristics of pre-cambial phloem material in undergrowth shrubs. The electrophysiological properties of hazel (Corylus avellana L.), elder (Sambucus nigra L.) and other undergrowth shrubs are compared, as well as how these characteristics change depending on stand density indices. Differences in electrophysiological characteristics reveal the crucial role of light for the growth, development and persistence of undergrowth shrubs. I suggest that a quantitative assessment of electrophysiological characteristics should be undertaken when managing forest stands for the creation of desirable undergrowth.

The largest group of recipients of the drinking water from groundwater in Ukraine are resides in the western part of the country. Due to the presence of zones in which the water-resistant rocks are subject to cracking in the hydrogeological regions of the Western Ukraine, the physicochemical composition of water is not constant and may vary, especially in terms of heavy metals content. The reasons for the presence of heavy metals in the groundwater are the anthropogenic influence and biological leaching of mineral ores. Heavy metals can migrate up and down and penetrate the aquifers of drinking water through the cracked zones of the waterresistant rocks. The mineral ores found in the Western Ukraine contain heavy metals, mainly as sulfides. They are oxidized by thionic bacteria (рН 5–7). As a result, the concentration of sulfate in water increases. At the same time, in the Western Ukraine, natural materials containing aluminosilicates such as zeolites, tuffs, basalts and others are widely distributed. They can be used as sorbents in the process of groundwater treatment. When using aluminosilicates, the removal efficiency is higher than in the case of traditionally used slacked lime (Ca(OH)₂) due to the fact that heavy metals are extracted by means of two mechanisms – ion exchange and formation of insoluble bases.

The paper presents geological settings, resources and mineral composition of theore bodies of the Zhyrychi copper deposit found in the North- Western Ukraine at the end of the last century. The deposit is located in the Vendian basaltic flows and in traflow pyroclastics in central part of the Volhyn trappean province, originated in the Late Vendian during Torn quistrifting. The majority of copper is concentrated in native form and occurs as disseminated grains, veinlets and nuggets. Locally native siver, copper- sulphides (chalcosite, digenite, bornite and covellite) and cuprite replace native copper. The ore bodies are controlled by faulting and occur as stratabound, but are locally enriched in nuggets in tuffs and fissured zones in ba alts. Ag, Pd, Rh and Aucan also beeco nomically important. The major copperores were deposited to gether with prehnite- pumpellyite para genesis, originated in the succession: pumpellyite – prehnite (šnative copper) – laumontite (or wairakite) (šnative copper). The ore bodies were formed during cooling of the mineralforming hydrothermal system at the end of the Vendian volcanic activity. The syngenetic inter growths of native copper with prehnite, precipitated after pumpellyite, and homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions in later wairakite (210–335gradeC) indicate that the major deposi tion of native copper took place at 200–400gradeC. The following propylitization, smectitization and analcilization of thecountry rocks probably occurred during at tenuation of the hydrothermal activity after magmatism ceased. All these processes were accompanied by dissolution of copper ore and its redistribution with local enrichment in copper nuggets.

In this article the author explores approaches to the understanding of the concept of «market of educational services» in Ukraine. What follows is the analysis of the functioning of preschool institutions in the regions of Western Ukraine. It has been shown that in all cities there has been a reduction of children’s preschool establishments, which was due to a rapid decline in fertility in the first years after the break away of Ukraine from the USSR and as a result of the economic crisis. In the later period, since 2005, the birth rate has gradually increased, and the number of establishments remained unchanged for a long time. Today, the situation with the number of places in such institutions remains critical. In the market of educational services, a business group of private pre-school educational institutions is actively formed, which in most cases does not meet the standards established in the state. The problem can be solved only by creating new or restoration of closed children’s institutions.

Opis:
The Zoloushka Cave belongs to a group of the largest gypsum caves in Western Ukraine (Bukovina region), developed in the middle Miocene (upper Badenian) evaporite series (Tyras Formation) on the SW periphery of the East European Platform. It is developed in the lower part of the evaporite series composed of gypsum, which is covered by a carbonate layer (Ratyn Limestone). The uneven upper surface of the gypsum at the contact with the limestone, the frequent occurrence of palaeokarst forms, and the presence of karstified fissures filled with allochthonous material indicate a sedimentation break between the gypsum and the overlying limestone. To support this thesis and to add new data on the age and palaeoenvironmental conditions of palaeokarst formation in the Bukovina region, palynological studies were carried out on material from the Zoloushka Cave. Palynofacies, sporomorphs and dinoflagellate cysts were studied. In total, over 70 sporomorph taxa and over 25 dinoflagellate cyst taxa have been identified in four samples collected from the filling of the palaeokarstic forms in the cave. The results of the analysis of sporomorphs and dinoflagellate cysts point to the formation of the palaeokarst during the sedimentation break that took place at the end of the late Badenian evaporitic cycle in the Western Ukraine region. The subsequent marine transgression led to the filling of the karst forms in gypsum with chemogenic carbonate material, precipitated from marine water (draperies) and with fine-grained, clastic material (pockets and fissures).

The upper part of the Lower Miocene Sloboda Conglomerate, a 250–1400 m thick unit, was deposited mainly on an alluvial fan and fan delta during the early stages of Carpathian Foredeep development. During of the Old Styrian overthrust movements of the Carpathian orogen, a forebulge was formed, which supplied clasts to the conglomerate. The clasts are dominated by Late Proterozoic–Early Cambrian phyllites, while Paleozoic carbonates are common, and Mesozoic and other rocks are rare. The source area formed mainly by a prolongation of the Małopolska Massif that was involved in the forebulge; this was located close to a palaeovalley cut into Mesozoic and Paleozoic rocks, buried under younger strata. Additional material was derived from the advancing front of the Carpathian Flysch nappes.

According to the finds, Polish and Western European coins reached western Ukraine in two stages: in the 10th /11th century and in the first half of the 12th century. Some of these coins (but usually without Polish ones) were transported further east, to the vicinity of Kiev. On the other hand, Western European coins flowed into the territories of Northern Rus’ from the north. This text is based on data contained both in the literature (including recent one) and information not yet published, kindly provided by researchers from Ukraine (A. Na zachodzie Ukrainy rozciągają się interesujące pod względem ekologicznym, biogeograficznym, krajobrazowym oraz w sensie ochrony przyrody regiony fizyczno-geograficzne jak: Karpaty, Pokucie, Roztocze, Zachodnie Polesie, Wołyń i Podole, które od dawna przyciągały uwagę naturalistów różnych specjalizacji. Przewidując dalszy rozwój sytuacji, polscy botanicy ocenili z ekologicznego punktu widzenia skutki antropogenicznej transformacji roślinności naturalnej i w odpowiednim czasie zgłosili konieczność ochrony ważnych kompleksów przyrodniczych i charakterystycznych dla nich właściwości genetycznych i fitosocjologicznych.
In the Western Ukraine there are unique regions important in ecological, biogeographical, landscape and environmental regard. These are the Carpathians, Pokuttya, Roztocha, Western Polissya, Volyn (Ladomirien) and Podilla, which were an object of interest of naturalists for a long period of time . In the 19-th century and in the period between 1st and 2nd World wars, when that territory belonged to the Polish state, Polish botanists and foresters (the list of their publications includes more than 300 names) contributed substantially to studying flora and vegetation of that territory. In the second half of 19th century a broad net of railways was built there, which favoured to bringing nearer the West-European markets to rich natural resources. In order to satisfy the needs of quickly developing forestry industry massive cutting of the oak forests had started in flat landscapes and coniferous forests in mountain regions. As a result of such intensive clean cutting in humid region of the Carpathians, soil erosion processes started and periodic catastrophic floods appeared .In Volyn and Podilla regions relic steppe formations, valuable from botanic and phytogeographical point of view, started disappearing. The far-sighed Polish scientists estimated ecological consequences of anthropogenic transformations of natural vegetation, and in proper time addressed the question about protection of the most biogeographically important natural ecosystems and specific rare genopool and phytocoenopool. At the beginning of 20th century they proposed creation in the Carpathians the national park and the net of natural reservations .The publications of Polish naturalists were highly estimated by the Ukrainian environmentalists and were creatively used for the continuation of floristic and phytocoenotic studies .These data are also utilised for the ecological grounding of new preserved objects of alive and not alive nature.

The presented scientific, theoretical and practical aspects of the topic are considered an important prerequisite for understanding the causes and results of the mass use of the deportation repressive tool in the intensive consolidation of Stalin’s totalitarian regime in “class hostile environment” and the consequences of such a policy for the western region development, particularly at modern stage, including the Ukrainian political nation-building and the independent Ukrainian state, which is now experiencing challenges and threats that are rooted in the totalitarian past. Stalinism, as a particular political regime, was established in the western regions of Ukraine at the final stages of World War II and can be defined as a kind of left extremist totalitarianism. The main components of the efficiency of the Stalinist totalitarian regime based on the mass use of political violence and terror through the branched structure of repressive secret police. Functions of the NKVS, NKVD, prosecutors, and courts followed the strategic objectives of Stalin’s totalitarian regime in a hostile social and national environment in Western Ukraine in the complex military and political conditions of the final phase of World War II. Effective and timely implementation of policy priorities of Stalinism in the region allowed to create an appropriate institutional and procedural system, which was based on the large-scale use of political violence and employed such characteristic tools as terror, repression, deportation.

This article focuses on the semantic aspects of architectural dominants transformation in Western Ukraine in the second half of the 1940s - 1950s. On the example of cities-regional centres, such as Rivne, Lutsk and Ternopil, the so-called "socialist reconstruction", which created new dominants in the urban silhouette, embodying the Soviet ideological principles in the architectural space is examined.

Występujące ponadto minerały to polihalit, epsomit, kizeryt.
The subject of research was salt deposit located in Stebnyk (Ukraine). In the Stebnyk salt mine is a very rich accumulation of potassium-magnesium salts, created in the Miocene basin of Carpathian Foredeep. Potassium-magnesium salts occur in the salt deposit as separate deformed lenses and layers often irregularly distributed. The thickness of the potassium-magnesium salts layer varies from 4 m to 150 m. The potash minerals are represented mainly by sylvite and carnallite, kainite and langbeinite, accompanied by polyhalite, epsomite and kieserite. Detailed mineralogical studies of Stebnyk salts area were carried out in the 70s (V. M. Kovalevich 1979). Currently, these data are correlated with the results obtained and on the basis of these data it has been determined the most reliable results. The inclusions are very rare one, usually form groups, which have specific characteristics by which managed to extract the four main types (due to the shape): inclusions elongated (oblong) - the so-called inclusions young, the process was captured just after the closing of the gap. • elliptical inclusions - inclusions were already pre-processes of transformation and closing, have clearly mild shape and form similar to an ellipse. • spherical inclusions - the so-called inclusions mature, which in terms of the shape of the desired form obtained from the point of force (the lowest free energy). Tested inclusions are secondary. Most are filled with several substances at the same time, usually the organic substance, CO2 and hematite. In addition, during the thorough analysis of the inclusions were examined inclusions of chalcopyrite, hematite and rare minerals such as lazurite (Na, Ca)8[(S, Cl, SO4, OH)2 | (Al- 6Si6O24)] and goethite FeO(OH) anatase TiO2.

The ideological and political strategies and tactics of most numerous Ukrainian and Polish ethno-political movements in the early stage of the Second World War intensified conflict-confrontational character of interethnic communication in the new military-political situation. In particular, model of social order, promoted by OUN (b), stemmed from its members in the formulation of the ideals of the future Ukrainian Independent State, offered to fix full or selective discrimination against other ethnic and political actors in their rights and freedoms , was of distinct extremist orientation, contained elements of populism and, in contemporary military and strategic realities of the deployment of the Second World War clearly showed the political adventurism of ideologues and members of the Bandera movement. We can assert dominance conflict- confrontational discourse vector of Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Jewish communication through the use of manipulative strategies means of communication technologies advocacy, informational opposition-struggle and technologies forming speeches, rumors based on the analysis of Ukrainian periodicals published in Eastern Galicia and western Volyn’ in the summer-autumn of 1941. This study leads to the reasonable conclusion about the active use of Nazi occupation authorities controlled by Ukrainian periodicals in their own propaganda campaign. The magnitude of the impact of propaganda combined with a broad arsenal of manipulative instrument maintenance and escalation of ethnic conflict interaction in the region outlined in the historical period.

Since the plus trees are selected based on phenotype, it is necessary to evaluate them in progeny test. The aim of this study is an indication of selecting elite mother trees based on the results from half-sib progeny test trials. As study sites, two Scots pine half-sib progeny tests were selected. During evaluation, the progenies had reached the age of 38 and 40 years, respectively. In both progeny trials, quantitative parameters and qualitative traits of Scots pine half-sib progenies were investigated. Based on these data, complex evaluation of half-sib families was carried out. We concluded that, Scots pine progenies at the age of 38 and 40 years in fresh and moist mixed forests are characterised by acceptable quality, with the survival being 25%–33% per progeny test trial. Based on a complex evaluation of 38- and 40-year-old half-sib progenies of plus trees, we proposed to select 31% of tested plus/mother trees as candidates for elite trees. Further, the list of candidates for elite trees was created with five plus trees from the Volyn region (26% of the total tested from the region) and four plus trees from the Lviv region (40% of the total tested from the region). With age, the share of the best and undesirable trees decreases, while the proportion of intermediate trees increases in both control trees and half-sib progenies. At the age of 38 and 40 years, the proportion of fast-growing offspring was from 0% to 36%, while the declining trend that was observed in previous years was being continued. Thus, due to the declining trend in the proportion of fast-growing offspring observed at the age of 38 and 40 years, we propose to select candidate trees for an elite group not early than after 40 years of test their progenies.

For a long time, outcrops at Potelych, Nahoryany and Lviv in western Ukraine have been of special interestfor Campanian andMaastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) palaeontology and biostratigraphy. An overview of studies devoted to these classic sites is presented, including an early account of the locality of Nahoryany in a Polish newspaper, dated 1843. The biostratigraphic position ofthese successions is reviewed, based on recent progress in studies of inoceramid bivalves and ammonites. The succession at Potelych, from where a unique land flora was described at the beginning of the 20th century, represents the upper Campanian “Ino- ceramus” costaecus Zone. The Nahoryany opoka, the source of rich fossil collections that were sent to many European museums in the 19th century, belongs to the lower Maastrichtian Endo- costea typica and Trochoceramus radiosus zones. The so-called Lviv marls correspond to the lower upper Maastrichtian Spyridocera- mus tegulatus Zone. The giant scaphitid ammonites Hoploscaphites quadrispinosus and Acanthoscaphites tridens s. str from Potelych and Nahoryany corroborate the inoceramid-based dating of these successions.

Opis:
The 340 to 1102 m thick multi-facies sequence was deposited during the Silurian at the Volhyno-Podillya margin of the East European Platform. The open shelf facies bordered from the west by a barrier formed by reefs, bioherms, crinoids, or by banks of detrital sediments (at the boundary of the lagoon and the open sea). Lagoonal deposits are represented by thin intercalations of sedimentary dolomites, sometimes with intercalations of organogenic limestones, marls, argillites, gypsum and anhydrite. Within the open shelf and slope facies, marls, lumpy clayey limestones and argillites are prevailing. A zone of reefal buildups has a rather complicated and insufficiently investigated structure. The exclusively terrigenous deposits of the submerged part of the continental slope form the entire Silurian sequence in the central part of the L’viv Depression and in the Carpathian Foredeep. Open porosity of the Silurian argillites vary from 0.6 to 2.4% and they are almost impermeable (less than 0.001 μm2•10–3). Volume weight ranges between 2.64 and 2.8 g/cm3. Natural radioactivity of rocks varies from 9 to 18 mcR/hr, apparent electric resistance is 20–154 Ohmm, interval time of longitudinal waves spreading is 126–365 μcs/m. TOC content, determined in 21 samples using the thermal analysis, varies from 0.75 to 2.38%. The composition of volatiles of fluid inclusions and closed pores of argillites shows the predominance of methane (up to 100 vol. %). In deeper horizons, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and ethane (a few percent) appear.
Skład substancji lotnych z inkluzji fluidalnych i zamkniętych porów w argilitach wykazuje dominację metanu (do 100% obj.). W głębszych horyzontach pojawiają się dwutlenek węgla, azot i etan (kilka procent).

Opis:
In this article, the modern spatial trends of development of trolleybus transport in the big cities of the western Ukraine are considered. The cities under investigation are the following: Lviv, Lutsk, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi. The trolleybus systems of this region have been developed in similar circumstances as the past. The radial planning of network prevails here, which causes some inconveniences for exploitations. Trolleybus lines in these cities have lengths of 64 to 119 kilometers, but in the future, their development will last mainly in the inhabited microregions. In most cities, 8-10 trolleybus routes that cover main transport highways functioned. In each city, there are 48 to 89 operating trolleybuses, mainly imported products (majority – Czech Skoda). In recent years, massive amounts of used machines from the countries of the EU were bought. The rolling stock of the systems of trolleybuses in big cities of West of Ukraine is exhaust, and middle age machines hesitates from 20 to 28 years. The article analyzes the determinants of the trolleybus network development. The author characterizes the rolling stocks in each of the six cities which are under investigation. The main problem of the development of these systems is insufficient funding. The prospects of the development are related to the expansion of the network of connections, the purchase and modernization of trolleybus rolling stock and the introduction of modern technological solutions.

According to common interpretations, two narrow crustal blocks are supposed to occur on the south-western edge or in the foreland of the East European Craton. The first one, bounded on the NE by the Nowe Miasto-Radom-Rava Ruska fault system, and on the SW by the Holy Cross Fault, stretches NW-SE from the Łysogóry-Radom region in Poland to the Rava Ruska Zone in Ukraine. The second one, bounded on the NE by the Holy Cross Fault, and from the SW by the Chmielnik-Ryszkowa Wola–Krakovets fault zone, is thought to tie together the Kielce area of the Holy Cross region with the Kokhanivka Zone in Ukraine. Both these blocks may have formed in connection with the development of regional listric faults during Precambrian asymmetric stretching of the Baltica continent, and were part of the marginal zone of the East European Craton. The sedimentary development of the blocks can be comparable to the Blake Plateau off the Florida coast. Both the Paleozoic sections and tectonic deformation styles in the Polish and Ukrainian segments of these blocks are different. Paleozoic tectonic structures of the Holy Cross region have a southern vergence, while the Paleozoic rocks of the Rava Ruska and Kokhanivka regions in western Ukraine are thrust towards the NE. This demonstrates the different tectonic evolution of the Paleozoic succession between the Holy Cross region and western Ukraine, and makes questionable the genetic relationships between these two regions. In this situation, the tectonic blocks of the foreland should be considered heterogeneous. Structural-facies evidence suggests that the SW boundary of the East European Craton should be moved at least to the Chmielnik–Ryszkowa Wola-Krakovets fault.

The Rock-Eval source rock characteristics, mineral composition and type-porosity of reservoir horizons, and origin of natural gas in the Devonian of the Lublin and Lviv basins are described. In the Lower Devonian, the TOC content ranges from 0.01 to 1.82 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.01 to 0.45 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. Transformation of organic matter varies from immature in the Lochkovian (Lviv Basin) to mature and overmature in the Emsian (Lublin Basin). The organic matter contains mainly Type-II kerogen, and underwent primary and/or secondary oxidation processes. In the Middle Devonian, the TOC content varies from 0.00 to 1.63 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.02 to 0.64 to 2.35 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. The organic matter contains mainly Type-II kerogen and is immature in the Givetian of the Lviv Basin and mature in the Eifelian of the Lviv Basin and in the Eifelian and Givetian in the Lublin Basin. In the Upper Devonian, the TOC content is from 0.02 to 2.62 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.04 to 1.43 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. Type-II kerogen dominates in both basins. Organic matter is mature in the Upper Devonian in the Lublin Basin and in the Famennian of the Lviv Basin and overmature in the Frasnian of the Lviv Basin. The reservoir horizons in the Devonian of the Lublin and Lviv basins are developed in clastic, carbonate and sulphate rocks. Terrigenous rocks form several separate horizons in the Lower and Middle Devonian of the Lviv Basin, and in the Upper Devonian (Famennian) of the Lublin Basin. Their filtration properties relate to intergranular porosity, while the fracture space has subordinate significance. Carbonate rocks form thick saturated horizons in the Givetian in the Lviv Basin, and in the Eifelian, Givetian and Frasnian in the Lublin Basin. Their filtration properties are produced by fracture porosity. Sulphates and carbonate-sulphate rocks with fracture and cavern porosity play a role as reservoir horizons in the Middle Devonian of the Lublin Basin. The natural gas collected from the Upper Devonian of the Lublin Basin was generated mainly during low-temperature thermogenic processes, from Ordovician–Silurian Type-II kerogen. The gas from the Middle Devonian reservoirs of the Lviv Basin was produced from Ordovician–Silurian Type-II kerogen and partly from the Middle and Upper Devonian mixed Type-III/II kerogen with maturity from about 0.9 to 1.4%. Carbon dioxide was formed by both thermogenic and microbial processes. Molecular nitrogen was generated mainly through thermal transformation of organic matter and also from destruction of NH4-rich illite of the clayey facies of the Ordovician–Silurian strata.

Ethnic return migration is a widespread strategy for migrants from economically disadvantaged countries. This article is about those ethnic return migrants who might successfully migrate thanks to their ancestors; their decision is based upon economic, pragmatic or rationalistic incentives aside from their diasporic feeling of belonging. Although this phenomenon has already been studied, scholars still mostly refer only to the benefits proposed by immigration policy as a key to understanding it. The impact of policy in the country of emigration on ethnic return migration is understudied. This article fills this gap. I found that when the Soviet Union introduced an attractive policy for Ukrainians/Russians in terms of study or work opportunities and the inhabitants in the Ukrainian Soviet Republic were quick to proclaim themselves as Ukrainians or Russians, the dissolution of the Soviet Union quickly changed this motivation. Ukrainians with Czech ancestors started to aim at obtaining official status as Czech members of the diaspora because of the benefits proposed by the Czech government (mainly permanent residency). However, it is difficult to prove the required link to one’s Czech ancestors due to Soviet-era documents in which the column with the Czech nationality of people’s ancestors is often missing. These observations lead to the conclusion that an attractive immigration policy aimed at the diaspora should not be treated as the only comprehensive explanation for ethnic return migration. Ethnic policy in the country of emigration also shapes this kind of migration and – in this concrete case – could even discourage ethnic return migrants.

Opis:
Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the awareness of Lyme borreliosis prevention and risk of being infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi in the forestry workers of Ternopil Region. To achieve the objective, serological tests were performed. Material and methods. The studies were conducted by diagnosing serum in 348 employees of Ternopil Region for anti-Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. antibodies by ELISA test. The age of the examined persons ranged from 17 to 75, mean age - 38.9 years. All the participants completed а questionnaire. The forestry workers were asked to state whether they noticed any symptoms compatible with Lyme borreliosis. Results. 348 forestry workers employed in five forest inspectorates were examined for specific anti-Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. antibodies. With ELISA test, a positive or inconclusive result in at least one antibody was observed in 43.1% of the respondents (n=150 of 348): IgM antibody − in 14.6% (n=51 of 348), and IgG antibody – in 35.3% (n=123 of 348). The largest number of respondents in the study group, i.e. 35.3%, were bitten in the abdomen area. As for the methods of tick removal, most respondents pulled the tick out with fingers (35.9%), while only 6.0% turned to a physician or nurse to have it removed. Erythema migrans (47%) and pruritis (31%) were the most frequent symptoms among the participants. Conclusions. T he absence of t he official r ecognition of Lyme b orreliosis as an occupational disease in Ukraine makes the study of prevention measures and their distribution in professional groups working in wooded areas an urgent matter. Providing the forest administration units with a sufficient number of tweezers or special loops for tick removal would certainly increase the protection of those exploiting forests against work-related tick-borne diseases.
Wprowadzenie. Celem pracy była ocena świadomości zapobiegania boreliozie z Lyme i ryzyka zakażenia Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. u pracowników leśnictwa w regionie Tarnopola. Aby osiągnąć wyznaczony cel, przeprowadzono testy serologiczne. Materiał i metody. Najczęstszymi objawami wśród pacjentów to wystąpienie rumienia wędrującego (47%) i świądu (31%). Wnioski.

Background. The paper deals with the problem of burnout among the anaesthesiologists of the Western Ukraine region and its causative factors. Burnout is characterized by mental and physical exhaustion owing to prolonged emotional stress. Material and methods. 105 anaesthesiologists were questioned as to the causes of job-related stress and their personal attitude to the job based on the Maslach Burnout Questionnaire. Questionnaire survey findings were compared in relation to the doctors’ practical experience. Results. Burnout symptoms were found to occur in 82% of anaesthesiologists with practical experience less than 5 years, and in 84% of doctors with practical experience above 20 years. These groups revealed high values of emotional burnout on the Maslach scale. Anaesthesiologists with 5-20 years of work experience revealed moderate levels of emotional burnout. High level of depersonalization was found in those with 5-20 years of work experience. For doctors who had less than 5 years and more than 20 years of work experience, depersonalization level was moderate. Conclusions. The group of anaesthesiologists with more than 20 years of work experience had the highest values of professional relationship reduction. The lowest value of this component of burnout was found in the young doctors with work experience of less than 5 years. About 80% of the doctors pointed out working intensity and insufficient salary as the main causes of work-related stress.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody.

Western Ukraine – the beginning of the Sovietisation (September–December1939). From the Perspective of the Ukrainian Historician On 17 September 1939 the Red Army attacked eastern Poland. The Soviets occupied the territory east of the San, Bug, Narew and Pisa Rivers. The official names for the territory were: Western Ukraine and Western Belarus. Lithuania was also included in their zone of influence. Functionaries of the communist party and security service came to Poland together with the Red Army. The Soviet security service commenced arrests of those accused of anticommunist activity, Polish administration representatives, the intelligentsia, and the so-called “enemies of the people” i.e. land owners and entrepreneurs. Tragic was the fate of the Polish POWs detained in special camps. The Soviets began organizing their own local administration. They introduced a new political system. They forbade the activity of the political parties and social organizations, and new ones following the Soviet model were set up in their place. There were also radical socio-economic changes. Opis:
The Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) coralline algal reefs of Western Ukraine contain caverns (up to 1 m across) and fissures that are filled by Sarmatian deposits: marly clays, clayey carbonate sand and bioclastic, bryozoan-rich sand. These deposits often contain abundant and very well preserved calcareous benthic foraminifera; agglutinated forms have not been recorded. Foraminiferal tests quite commonly show morphological abnormalities, e.g. twin forms or tests with irregularities in size or shape in last chambers. Each of the three analysed samples is characterized by a different foraminiferal assemblage: Elphidium aculeatum assemblage, Hauerinidae assemblage and Lobatula lobatula assemblage. These assemblages are characteristic for a shallow marine environment. Low taxonomic diversity and high dominance or monospecific foraminiferal assemblages indicate generally a restricted marine environment. It seems that the increasing salinity and very high-energy environment were the most probable factors controlling the composition of the foraminiferal assemblages.

Opis:
In 1944–1945 100 000 Polish repatriates, including nearly 100 priests left the Tarnopol region. 259 churches and chapels became deserted. Toward the end of the forties there remained eleven legally functioning Roman Catholic communities, with almost 3000 faithful, looked after by seven priests. Despite the hostility of the atheistic, totalitarian regime, the communities not only preserved their religious tradition and national identity, but also became a moral support to the underground Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In the Khrushchev era – in contrast to the Stalinist period – mass repressions were not instigated the clergy, quite the opposite – many clergymen were freed from prisons and camps. However, at the same time, atheist propaganda was intensified. Orthodox and Catholic churches were being closed, religious communities were being officially deregistered. Due to this, in 1964 only six registered Roman Catholic communities remained with the same number of churches. The remaining communities lost their previous status. Through delegalising them, the local authorities were acting according to the expectations of the Kiev and Moscow officials, however, they made it more difficult for themselves to control part of the Roman Catholics in future. Persecutions led to the closing of the Roman and Greek Catholics – not only in the Tarnopol district, but also in the whole of Western Ukraine. During Brezhnev’s rule the atheist course was continued. In the mid seventies in the Tarnopol region only three legally registered parishes remained, with three churches, while as many as ten functioned illegally. Naturally, this situation could not please local Catholics. The active attitude of the clergy, imbued by the spirit of the II Vatican Council, caused the faithful to become more active. They started systematically sending petitions to the district plenipotentiary for religious cults concerning the reregistration of the Roman Catholic parishes. The authorities consistently refused. Not until the policies of glasnost and perestroika, inaugurated by Gorbachov, were there conditions for religious freedom and the rebirth of Catholicism and other religions. The Roman Catholics of the Tarnopol region had their loyalty to Jesus Christ and the Holy See. They passed the test honourably and with a clear conscience.

The topic of Ukrainian-Russian relations is very important in the alternative history novels of the Ukrainian writer Vasily Kożeljanko (1957-2008). Alternative histories novels "Parade in Moscow" (1997), "Kotigoroško" (2000), "Terorium" (2001), "FalseNostradamus" (2001) novels appeared in an independent Ukraine when there was no longer a Soviet censorship. In alternative historical prose, heroes can be embedded in the history of an active person or as fictional characters who carry the ethno-stereotypical lines of their community and have ethno-stereotypes about other peoples. Ethnic stereotypes of Ukrainians and Russians and stereotypes of Ukraina and Russia can be mythologised. Relations between a stronger and weaker, older and younger, colonizing country and colonized country are presented as a conflict between Strong Russia and a weak Ukraine, but also a strong Ukraine of weak Russia. Russian Empire in the of Kożeljankos alternative histories novels presented negatively.

Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the awareness of Lyme borreliosis prevention and exposure to ticks in non-medical students of 2 universities in Ternopil Region (Western Ukraine). Material and methods. The study was conducted by surveying 252 young persons studying at non-medical universities in Ternopil (Western Ukraine): 119 students of Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatyuk National Pedagogical University (TNPU) and 133 of Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University (TNTU), aged 18-23 years old. All the participants completed а questionnaire. Results. The students of Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatyuk National Pedagogical University (TNPU) and Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University (TNTU), Ternopil, understand that the risk of being infected with Lyme borreliosis does not only appear in forests, but also in gardens, parks, and countryside. Still, 16.5% of the students of both Ternopil universities showed very low awareness about Lyme borreliosis. Most TNPU respondents in the study group (40.7%) were bitten by a tick in the abdomen area; 31.3% of the TNTU students declared being bitten in lower limbs. Students of both universities recorded the fewest bites in the chest area (7.1% in TNTU and 13.0% in TNPU respectively). As for the most frequent methods of tick removal, 71.4% of the respondents lubricated it with fat (e.g. butter, oil) and 42.0% twisted it out with tweezers. Conclusions. Education towards proper methods of tick removal, prevention of tick bites (clothes, repellents) should become an important element of protection measures in students in the regions of high Lyme borreliosis frequency, including Ternopil.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone wśród 252 młodych osób studiujących na uniwersytetach w Tarnopolu (Zachodnia Ukraina): 119 studentów z Narodowego Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego im. Hnatyuka (TNPU) oraz 133 z Narodowego Uniwersytetu Technicznego im. Ivana Pulugo (TNTU) w wieku 18 lat − 23 lata. Jako narzędzie badawcze wykorzystano autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Wyniki. Wnioski.

Mutual relations between The Communist party of Poland and The Communist party of Western Ukraine in 1920th are characterized with the presence of ponderable conflicts and recriminations. KPWU was fighting for a wide autonomy in the activity explaining it the features of development of political force on the territory of East Galicia and Volyn’ in a counterbalance to other Polish territories. KPP tried to centralize guidance upon all communist forces in Poland for better control after activity of local organizations and their maximal efficiency. Persuasion that ІІ convention of KPP in 1923 settled all conflicts and allowed two parties to be completely incorporated and to act in concert is not confirmed by several inner-party crises that became especially noticeable in the second half 1920th.

In the article we studied the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church as an integral part, a national factor in the religious process of the Ukrainians, living in western regions of the USSR during the 1960s and 1970s. The research gave a comprehensive analysis of the place and role of the church in nation-building and preservation of ethnic and national identity of the titular representatives of the Ukraine’s nation during the Soviet anti-religious campaign. We described the activities of the Greek Catholic clergy, whose aim was the consolidation of national-patriotic forces and the formation of religious opposition among the Ukrainians. The article also outlined the policy vectors of the atheistic communist ruling elite and revealed their essence, covered violent reorientation of Greek Catholics to Orthodoxy. In terms of religious oppression and persecution, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church continued its development of underground and become a consolidating factor in Western Ukrainian struggle for their national and religious rights. It has become an important factor in ethnicity creation and a spiritual and cultural self of the Ukrainian people.

Opis:
The years 1939–1941 marked a dramatic breakthrough in the economy of the eastern territories of the II RP under Soviet occupation. Not only did the USSR’s invasion mean an occupation of the territories in the classical sense of the word, but also radically transformed the socio-economic system following the Soviet example. Economic changes of the years 1939–1941 were incomplete, mainly because they were interrupted by the outbreak of the German–Soviet war. But even in such a short time the economic life of the occupied territories was revolutionised. First of all, the pre-war ownership structure of the area’s economy, based on various types of ownership, was destroyed, never to be recreated again in its traditional form. There was a considerable step in the unifi cation of the territories with the economic system of the Soviet state. Reasons for the fast change included the introduction of Soviet legal and organisational structures and the lack of the territories’ self-suffi ciency in raw materials for the industry and everyday use articles. Before the war, the region was supplied with raw materials and fi nished goods, and sometimes even agricultural produce, by the central and western Poland. In the period 1939–1941, raw materials, goods and equipment were being delivered from the territory of the USSR. Supplies from the East were notoriously unreliable, but necessary for relatively stable functioning of the territories incorporated in 1939. Thus, not only due to strictly political, but also economic reasons (lack of self-suffi ciency in raw materials and processing industry) territories of the II RP became a part of the Soviet empire in a very short time (note: a peripheral part). Their interests were subjected to the interests of the empire. This infringed upon the interests of a large group of local people who experienced a severe slump in material and social status.

Opis:
The article presents Soviet religious and ecclesiastical policy in the first period of the Second World War on Polish territories occupied by the Soviet Union. The article also shows aspects concerning functioning of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church which structures were on the territory subjected to the Soviet Union. The article underlines contradictions in political activities used by the Soviet authorities against protestant believers living on the territories of Western Ukraine and Belarus. The facts presented in the article abolish the concept of „liberal” religious policy led both by administration of the Communist party of the Soviet Union and the authorities of the country in 1939–1941. Active actions taken by Moscow Patriarchate which aimed to subordinate protestant believers coming from parishes submitted to the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church on territories of Western Ukraine and Belarus have also been analyzed. It has been noticed that the secret service led Moscow Patriarchate to act to liquidate autocephaly of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church on the occupied territories. The NKVD was responsible for subordinating the parishes of the Church to Moscow Patriarchate. Representatives of structures of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church were forced to cooperate with Moscow Patriarchate. It is worth noticing that the actions taken against the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church by the authorities of the Soviet Union were also used during the process of annexation of the Baltic countries and during Soviet – German war.

It has been revealed the essential characteristics of the political activity of the population of the Western regions of the USSR in conditions of liberation from Nazi occupation, and stands of Stalin totalitarian regime, which was aimed at prevention of any manifestations of negative political mobilization. In the article it has been analyzed the political, legal, institutional and procedural mechanisms of the formation of structures of the Stalinist totalitarian regime in Western Ukraine, in the period after the liberation of the region from the fascist occupation, that were in the restoration and consolidation of the dominant role of the party committees and the formation of a controlled their range workers Soviet, Komsomol, economic organizations, organs of the NKVD and KGB, as an organized force to control political mobility of the local population. The violent nature of the political mobilization of the population in the Western regions of the Ukrainian SSR in support of the new political regime in countering departments of the UPA and OUN underground has been shown. It has been revealed the communicative manipulating-raising mechanisms of the formation among the population of the Western region of positive political mobilization against the new government. The negative consequences of the spread and dominance among the population liberated from the Nazi occupation of Western Ukraine controversial type of political mobilization of the contemporary socio-political conditions and present are under the analysis.

Opis:
Molecular composition of natural gases accumulated in autochthonous Miocene strata of the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep is dominated by methane, which usually constitutes over 98 vol%. Methane was generated by the carbon dioxide reduction pathway of microbial processes. Ethane was generated both during microbial and thermogenic processes ("oil window") and propane at the initial stage of the low-temperature thermogenic processes, and also by the microbial processes. The rhythmic and cyclic deposition of Miocene clays and sands as well as the vigorous generation of microbial methane caused that the gas produced in claystone beds was accumulated in the overlaying sandstones, and capped, in turn, by the succeeding claystones. Such generation and accumulation system of microbial gases gave rise to the formation of multi-horizontal gas fields. Analysis of the distribution of immature humic dispersed organic matter in the Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian sequences indicates that it is practically homogeneous. A migration range of microbial gases was insignificant and locations of their accumulations would depend only on the existence of proper type of traps (compactional anticlines situated above basement uplifts, sealed by the Carpathian Overthrust and/or by faults; stratigraphic pinching out and stratigraphic traps related to unconformities). Another situation is encountered in the south, beneath the Carpathian Overthrust. The thickness of the autochthonous Miocene strata in this area is more than 1,500 metres. Geochemical studies reveal that from a depth of 2,500 metres starts the process of low-temperature thermogenic hydrocarbon generation (“oil window”). At greater depths, more than 7,500 metres, within the autochthonous Lower Miocene basin only the high-temperature methane ("gas window") could be produced and accumulated.

One of the most important part of sovietization policy in the areas of Western Ukraine and Western Belorus were the changes in the structure of the agricultural economy. In this process, an important role was played by the press, which was a kind of relay will of the highest authorities of the Soviet Union. The issue of the functioning of the agricultural economy in the areas of Western Ukraine and Western Belarus was one of the most commented on by the press aspects of these lands. Press took part in the action of promotion of collective agricultural system, describing ,,enthusiasm” of the population of newly connected to the USSR areas for this method of cultivation of the land, and thus to the Soviet regime. According to the image built by the press, kolkhozes were to be testimony to the superiority of the collective agricultural economy over the individual. Joining the kolkhozes, according to the propaganda was voluntary and mass, and working in tchem peasants achieved high crops. The press also presented the values of living in a kolkhoz. In the context of the functioning of the agricultural economy in Western Belarus and Western Ukraine also reported their participation in the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in 1941 and the issue of the drying so-called marshes of Polesie, which occupied a large part of the Bielorussian SSR.

Opis:
The paper summarises the effects of recent studies carried out by a team from the Department of Historical and Regional Geology of the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw on the upper Silurian of Podolia (western part of Ukraine). The sedimentary history of the Silurian succession of Podolia is characterised by its cyclic pattern, with shallowing-upward cyclothems. In the traditional interpretation, the occurrence of stromatoporoid beds within each cyclothem marks the deepest (or most open-marine) sedimentary environment within the cycle. According to the results of recent studies, their occurrence is connected rather with a relatively shallow-water environment and with high energy phenomena. A substantial reinterpretation of the main sedimentary processes governing the deposition and facies distribution on the shelf is presented. Particularly, there are recognised and described high-energy sedimentary events repeatedly punctuating the generally calm sedimentation that prevailed in the lagoonal settings, some of which are interpreted as tsunami induced. Further perspectives for studies on the Silurian successions of Podolia are also discussed. The main problem is the precise correlation of particular sections that are scattered over vast distances and developed in similar facies associations.

Background. Lifestyle is one of the key factors that determines the proper development of human body, its systems and functions. An appropriate level of physical activity and BMI are thus integral components of a healthy lifestyle. Material and methods. The study involved 333 female students of Ternopil State Medical University and 409 schoolgirls of Ternopil, western Ukraine. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-L) was used as a research method. BMI and physical activity self-assessment rates were also considered. Results. The surveyed female students of Ternopil State Medical University and schoolgirls of Ternopil (western Ukraine) demonstrate a high level of total physical activity. Most of the surveyed female students (71.1%) and pupils (59.4%) had normal body weight. The schoolgirls’ self-assessment of physical fitness was lower and more adequate when compared to that of female students. Besides, both students and pupils who indicated that they had no free time spent it in a more reasonable way than those who considered that they had enough of it or not enough. Conclusions. The female students of medical university and female pupils of Ternopil are fully aware that physical activity is significant for their lives and that it constitutes a key factor to a healthy lifestyle.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. Badane studentki z Państwowego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Tarnopolu i uczennice z Tarnopola (zachodnia Ukraina) wykazują wysoki poziom aktywności fizycznej. Wnioski.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to analyze the causes, nature and consequences of the Ukrainian-Polish-Jewish conflict-confrontational interaction in the Lviv, Stanislav and Ternopil Voivodeships in the autumn of 1939 under the conditions of planting the Stalinist totalitarian regime. It also characterizes the degree and nature of mutual aggressiveness among the part of the active national-political and socially oriented Ukrainian and Polish population of Western Ukraine in the context of the expansion of German aggression against the Second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It indicates the ideological and propaganda principles for the preparation of the Red Army’s entry into Lviv, Stanislav and Ternopil Voivodeships of Poland on September 17, 1939. The main models of the attitude to the Soviet authorities of the various national communities of Eastern Galicia in the autumn of 1939 are described. Furthermore, the size of the armed struggle between Ukrainians and Poles in the conditions of the collapse of the Polish state and the preparation of the Red Army’s entry into Western Ukraine are shown, as well as the specific propaganda-manipulative instruments of the influence of Stalin’s totalitarian regime on the population of the Western Ukrainian region in the process of its inclusion in the USSR. The paper also indicates the consequences of destructive information-psychological diktat on the public consciousness and historical memory of the Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish population of the former Lviv, Stanislav and Ternopil Voivodeships of pre-war Poland.
Podjęto próbę scharakteryzowania stopnia i znamion wzajemnej agresji ze strony części nacjonalistycznie i socjalistycznie zorientowanej ludności ukraińskiej i polskiej z terenów zachodniej Ukrainy w kontekście ekspansji agresji niemieckiej przeciwko drugiej Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów. W artykule wskazano ideologiczne i propagandowe mechanizmy przygotowania wejścia Armii Czerwonej do województw lwowskiego, stanisławowskiego i tarnopolskiego 17 września 1939 roku.

Opis:
In this study, the biosynthesis of the plastid pigments chlorophyll a and b was examined for the most common shrubs in hornbeam-oak forest stands of the Western forest-steppe zone of Ukraine. The characteristics of the pigments’ biosynthesis were determined in terms of plant species, vegetation period and growth conditions (under canopy cover and out in the open). The gathered data on the changes of the pigment complex with respect to the examined variables confirms the sensitivity of plastid pigment biosynthesis to environmental factors.
